ตั้งแต่ and Starting Points

Temporal ตั้งแต่ identifies a starting boundary: ตั้งแต่เช้า “since/from this morning,” ตั้งแต่เดือนหน้า “starting next month,” ตั้งแต่ย้ายบ้าน “since moving house.” It does not conjugate the following predicate and does not itself say whether the situation continues, repeats, or ends. The rest of the clause and the discourse supply that viewpoint.

English since often appears with a perfect tense, while from appears with other forms. Thai uses ตั้งแต่ across those translations because the word's stable job is to establish the lower boundary, not to select an English tense.

Starting point, situation, and endpoint

ตั้งแต่ can introduce a time noun, a calendar expression, or a clause describing the boundary event. It occurs after the situation when the start specifies that situation, or clause-initially when the start frames the wider discourse.

ฉันดูแลบัญชีลูกค้ากลุ่มนี้มาตั้งแต่ต้นปีค่ะ

chan dulae banchi luk kha klum ni ma tangtae ton pi kha

I've handled the accounts for this customer group since the beginning of the year. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

ร้านกาแฟเปิดตั้งแต่เจ็ดโมงเช้าครับ

ran kafae poet tangtae chet mong chao khrap

The coffee shop opens from seven in the morning. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; daily schedule begins then)

ตั้งแต่ย้ายโต๊ะ ฉันมีสมาธิมากขึ้นค่ะ

tangtae yai to chan mi samathi mak khuen kha

Since moving desks, I've been able to concentrate better. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

The boundary clause ย้ายโต๊ะ has no tense morphology. Because the main clause evaluates the period after the move, English naturally chooses since moving and a present perfect. Thai requires neither an auxiliary nor a participle.

💡
Ask “where does the interval begin?” ตั้งแต่ answers that question. It does not answer “how long?” or “does the situation still hold?” by itself.

A start does not guarantee continuation

ตั้งแต่ may introduce an open span, a repeated schedule, or one edge of a closed range. Compare an open current interval with a fully bounded timetable.

คุณพ่อไม่สบายมาตั้งแต่คืนวันศุกร์ครับ

khun pho mai sabai ma tangtae khuen wan suk khrap

My father has been unwell since Friday night. (ordinary respectful speech, male speaker; context presents the state as continuing)

ศูนย์บริการปิดปรับปรุงตั้งแต่วันจันทร์ถึงวันพุธค่ะ

sun borikan pit prapprung tangtae wan chan thueng wan phut kha

The service center is closed for renovation from Monday through Wednesday. (formal-neutral service notice, female voice; both boundaries explicit)

ผมทำงานกะเช้าตั้งแต่หกโมงถึงบ่ายสองครับ

phom tham ngan ka chao tangtae hok mong thueng bai song khrap

I work the morning shift from six until two in the afternoon. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; recurring bounded schedule)

In the first example, the state and current context favor continuation. In the next two, ถึง supplies the upper boundary. The closed range prevents any automatic inference that the closure or shift continues after Wednesday or two o'clock.

มา, แล้ว, and อยู่ add viewpoint

Continuative มา traces a situation from the stated boundary toward a reference point. Final แล้ว can present a duration or changed situation as attained, while อยู่ holds a situation at the reference point. None is mechanically required after ตั้งแต่.

เราไม่ได้รับคำร้องเรียนมาตั้งแต่ปรับระบบใหม่ครับ

rao mai dai rap kham rongrian ma tangtae prap rabop mai khrap

We haven't received a complaint since updating the system. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; negative interval traced to now)

ตอนนั้นฉันรอผลตรวจมาตั้งแต่เช้าแล้วค่ะ

ton nan chan ro phon truat ma tangtae chao laeo kha

At that point, I had been waiting for the test result since morning. (ordinary polite past narrative, female speaker)

ร้านยังปิดอยู่ค่ะ เพราะไฟดับมาตั้งแต่เช้า

ran yang pit yu kha phro fai dap ma tangtae chao

The shop remains closed because the power has been out since morning. (ordinary polite service update, female speaker; ยัง...อยู่ maintains the closure and มา traces the outage)

The past anchor ตอนนั้น shifts the endpoint of the second span into a narrative. Thai รอ...มา...แล้ว remains unchanged; the English translation changes to had been waiting. For more on the temporal path contributed by มา, see continuative มา.

💡
Use มา when you want to trace the situation forward from the starting point, อยู่ when you want to maintain it at the reference point, and แล้ว when an attained stage matters. These meanings can coexist, but ตั้งแต่ does not demand them.

Future starting points and policy changes

ตั้งแต่ is not confined to the past. It can establish the beginning of a future arrangement, with จะ or context presenting what follows as prospective.

ตั้งแต่เดือนหน้า ฉันจะเข้าสำนักงานสัปดาห์ละสองวันค่ะ

tangtae duean na chan cha khao samnakngan sapda la song wan kha

Starting next month, I'll go into the office two days a week. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

บัตรแบบเก่าจะใช้ไม่ได้ตั้งแต่สิ้นเดือนนี้ครับ

bat baep kao cha chai mai dai tangtae sin duean ni khrap

The old cards will no longer work from the end of this month. (formal-neutral service announcement, male voice)

The negative ability sequence ใช้ไม่ได้ stays inside the prospective clause. English may use will no longer, but ตั้งแต่ still contributes only the boundary.

Omission and recoverability

A starting-point clause often omits a participant shared with the main clause: ตั้งแต่ย้ายบ้าน ฉันเดินมากขึ้น means that ฉัน moved and later walked more. If the two clauses have different participants, name the one whose action establishes the boundary.

ตั้งแต่ลูกเริ่มเข้าโรงเรียน ผมต้องออกจากบ้านเร็วขึ้นครับ

tangtae luk roem khao rongrian phom tong ok chak ban reo khuen khrap

Since my child started school, I've had to leave home earlier. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; different subjects stated)

This is a clause-linking relation, not an English infinitive complement. เริ่มเข้าโรงเรียน and ต้องออกจากบ้าน are ordinary invariant Thai predicates.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณทำงานที่สาขานี้ตั้งแต่เมื่อไรคะ

khun tham ngan thi sakha ni tangtae muearai kha

Since when have you worked at this branch? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ตั้งแต่สาขานี้เปิดเมื่อสองปีก่อนครับ

tangtae sakha ni poet muea song pi kon khrap

Since this branch opened two years ago. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; work predicate omitted while the different temporal-clause subject remains explicit)

แล้วดูแลลูกค้ากลุ่มเดิมมาตลอดหรือคะ

laeo dulae luk kha klum doem ma talot rue kha

And have you handled the same customer group throughout? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)

ไม่ตลอดครับ เพิ่งย้ายมาดูแลกลุ่มนี้ต้นปี

mai talot khrap phoeng yai ma dulae klum ni ton pi

Not throughout. I only moved to this group at the beginning of the year. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting a duration after ตั้งแต่

❌ ผมรอตั้งแต่สามชั่วโมงแล้วครับ

Incorrect for ‘I have waited for three hours’—สามชั่วโมง is a duration, not a starting point.

✅ ผมรอช่างมาสามชั่วโมงแล้วครับ

phom ro chang ma sam chua mong laeo khrap

I've been waiting for the technician for three hours. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Making ตั้งแต่ mean “only on” a day

❌ ร้านปิดตั้งแต่วันจันทร์ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended ‘the shop closes only on Monday’—ตั้งแต่ establishes Monday as the beginning of a span.

✅ ร้านปิดเฉพาะวันจันทร์ค่ะ

ran pit chapho wan chan kha

The shop is closed only on Mondays. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)

3. Copying English since-placement into the middle of the subject frame

❌ ฉันตั้งแต่ปีที่แล้วทำงานที่นี่ค่ะ

Awkward neutral order—the start should frame the clause or follow the situation it anchors.

✅ ฉันทำงานที่นี่มาตั้งแต่ปีที่แล้วค่ะ

chan tham ngan thi ni ma tangtae pi thi laeo kha

I've worked here since last year. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Moving negation after the event

❌ ผมพบเขาไม่ตั้งแต่วันประชุมครับ

Incorrect—ไม่ or ไม่ได้ precedes the denied meeting event.

✅ ผมไม่ได้พบเขาตั้งแต่วันประชุมใหญ่ครับ

phom mai dai phop khao tangtae wan prachum yai khrap

I haven't seen him since the general meeting. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ตั้งแต่ + time/event establishes the lower boundary of a temporal span.
  • Starting point is not duration: compare ตั้งแต่เช้า with มาสามชั่วโมงแล้ว.
  • The span may be open, closed with ถึง, repeated as a schedule, past-relative, or future.
  • มา, อยู่, ยัง, and แล้ว add continuation, maintenance, expectation, or attainment; ตั้งแต่ alone does not encode all of these.
  • Shared subjects can be omitted in boundary clauses, but different participants must remain clear.
