Temporal ก่อน places one time or event earlier than another; หลัง places it later. Thai builds this relation with several frames: ก่อนประชุม “before the meeting,” ก่อนออกจากบ้าน “before leaving home,” ทำอันนี้ก่อน “do this first,” and หลังจากประชุมเสร็จ “after finishing the meeting.” No verb changes form to show whether the sequence is past or future.
The difficult part is not the dictionary meanings “before” and “after.” It is choosing a frame that makes the two events, their participants, and their order unambiguous.
Three frames with ก่อน
ก่อน can introduce an earlier reference point, follow an event to mean “first,” or occur in ก่อน...จะ... when one event precedes a prospective boundary.
| Productive frame | Substitution | Natural model | Relation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ก่อน + noun/event, main clause | ออกจากบ้าน | ก่อนออกจากบ้าน ตรวจประตู | checking before leaving |
| event 1 + ก่อน แล้วค่อย + event 2 | ถามหัวหน้า / ตอบลูกค้า | ถามหัวหน้าก่อน แล้วค่อยตอบลูกค้า | explicit first and next actions |
| ก่อน + subject + จะ + event, main clause | ลูกค้า / มาถึง | ก่อนลูกค้าจะมาถึง เตรียมห้อง | preparation before prospective arrival |
| main clause + ก่อน + time | หกโมง | ส่งงานก่อนหกโมง | deadline boundary |
ก่อนออกจากบ้าน ฉันตรวจประตูทุกบานค่ะ
kon ok chak ban chan truat pratu thuk ban kha
Before leaving home, I check every door. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; shared subject omitted in the first clause)
ผมขอถามหัวหน้าก่อน แล้วค่อยตอบลูกค้าครับ
phom kho tham hua na kon laeo khoi top luk kha khrap
I'll ask my supervisor first and then reply to the customer. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ก่อนลูกค้าจะมาถึง เราต้องจัดห้องให้เสร็จค่ะ
kon luk kha cha ma thueng rao tong chat hong hai set kha
Before the customers arrive, we need to finish arranging the room. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; different subjects stated)
In the first example, ฉัน is understood as the person leaving and checking. The third example names ลูกค้า because the customers arrive while เรา arrange the room. Omission is licensed by recoverability, not by a rule that every temporal clause must share its subject.
หลัง as a time noun, and หลังจาก before a clause
หลัง + time/event noun is compact and neutral: หลังประชุม, หลังเลิกงาน, หลังอาหารเย็น. Before a fuller event clause, หลังจาก + clause provides a clear and highly productive frame. หลังจากที่ + clause is also possible, especially in careful or formal prose, but ที่ is not obligatory in ordinary examples.
หลังประชุมผมต้องไปพบฝ่ายบัญชีครับ
lang prachum phom tong pai phop fai banchi khrap
After the meeting, I need to see accounting. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
หลังจากลูกค้ากลับแล้ว เราจะตรวจห้องอีกครั้งค่ะ
lang chak luk kha klap laeo rao cha truat hong ik khrang kha
After the customers have left, we'll inspect the room again. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; different subjects explicit)
หลังจากตรวจสัญญาเสร็จแล้ว ผมส่งให้ทนายทันทีครับ
lang chak truat sanya set laeo phom song hai thanai thanthi khrap
After finishing the contract review, I sent it to the lawyer immediately. (ordinary polite past narrative, male speaker)
In the last target, เสร็จ supplies the endpoint of checking and แล้ว presents that stage as attained before the main event. หลังจาก already orders the clauses, so แล้ว is not a compulsory translation of English after. หลังจากตรวจสัญญาเสร็จ ผมก็ส่ง... is also natural. The lexical completion page explains why เสร็จ and แล้ว are not synonyms.
Past and future use the same temporal architecture
The sequence does not determine tense. A scene-setting adverb, a prospective marker, or established narrative context locates both events.
เมื่อเช้าฉันซื้อกาแฟก่อนเข้าสำนักงานค่ะ
muea chao chan sue kafae kon khao samnakngan kha
This morning I bought coffee before going into the office. (ordinary polite past report, female speaker)
พรุ่งนี้หลังไปส่งลูกที่โรงเรียน ผมจะไปธนาคารครับ
phrung ni lang pai song luk thi rongrian phom cha pai thanakhan khrap
Tomorrow, after dropping my child at school, I'll go to the bank. (ordinary polite future plan, male speaker)
The unchanged sequences ซื้อ...ก่อนเข้า and หลังไปส่ง...จะไป acquire past and future translations from เมื่อเช้า and พรุ่งนี้...จะ. ก่อน and หลัง express relative order, not absolute time.
Interaction with แล้ว and อยู่
Final แล้ว can signal that the earlier event is attained; อยู่ can identify a situation that continues while another action is prepared. Their contribution is independent of the temporal linker.
ก่อนกลับ ช่วยปิดไฟที่ยังเปิดอยู่นะคะ
kon klap chuai pit fai thi yang poet yu na kha
Before leaving, please turn off any lights that are still on. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; อยู่ maintains the light's state)
หลังจากฝนหยุดแล้ว ถนนยังเปียกอยู่ครับ
lang chak fon yut laeo thanon yang piak yu khrap
After the rain stopped, the road was still wet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; attained stopping contrasts with continuing wetness)
The second clause can describe a past scene because หลัง supplies the relative sequence and discourse supplies the larger time frame. ยังเปียกอยู่ is not present tense. It holds the wet state at the reference point after the rain stopped.
Earlier action versus earlier deadline
Postverbal ก่อน often means “first” or “for now,” depending on context. A following time expression instead creates a deadline.
คุณส่งแบบร่างมาก่อนก็ได้ค่ะ ฉบับจริงส่งวันศุกร์
khun song baep rang ma kon ko dai kha chabap ching song wan suk
You can send the draft first; send the final version on Friday. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
กรุณาส่งแบบฟอร์มก่อนเที่ยงวันครับ
karuna song baep fom kon thiang wan khrap
Please submit the form before noon. (formal-polite instruction, male voice)
In ส่งแบบร่างมาก่อน, ก่อน ranks the draft as the earlier contribution. In ก่อนเที่ยงวัน, it marks the upper boundary of the allowed interval. Neither is an English infinitive marker.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
หลังเลิกงานคุณว่างไหมคะ
lang loek ngan khun wang mai kha
Are you free after work? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ว่างหลังหกโมงครับ แต่ขอแวะรับลูกก่อน
wang lang hok mong khrap tae kho wae rap luk kon
I'm free after six, but let me stop and pick up my child first. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
งั้นหลังจากรับลูกแล้ว โทรหาฉันได้ไหมคะ
ngan lang chak rap luk laeo tho ha chan dai mai kha
Then after picking up your child, could you call me? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวโทรก่อนออกจากโรงเรียน
dai khrap diao tho kon ok chak rongrian
Certainly. I'll call before leaving the school. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing which action comes first
❌ ผมส่งรายงานก่อนตรวจตัวเลขครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘check the figures before sending’; this says the report is sent first.
✅ ผมจะตรวจตัวเลขก่อน แล้วค่อยส่งรายงานครับ
phom cha truat tua lek kon laeo khoi song raingan khrap
I'll check the figures first and then send the report. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
2. Omitting a different temporal-clause subject
❌ ก่อนจะมาถึง เราเตรียมห้องไว้ค่ะ
Ambiguous for the intended ‘before the customers arrive’; zero naturally invites the subject เรา to control both events.
✅ ก่อนแขกจะมาถึง เราเตรียมห้องไว้ค่ะ
kon khaek cha ma thueng rao triam hong wai kha
Before the guests arrive, we prepare the room. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
3. Turning the subject of the after-clause into a possessive
❌ หลังจากของฉันตรวจเอกสารเสร็จ จะโทรกลับค่ะ
Incorrect—ของฉัน is possessive ‘mine/my,’ not the subject ‘I’ of the following clause.
✅ หลังจากฉันตรวจเอกสารเสร็จแล้ว จะโทรกลับค่ะ
lang chak chan truat ekkasan set laeo cha tho klap kha
After I finish checking the documents, I'll call back. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Treating แล้ว as a required past ending after หลังจาก
❌ พรุ่งนี้หลังจากประชุมแล้วเสร็จ ผมจะกลับครับ
Incorrect order—เสร็จ follows the meeting predicate, and future sequence does not require a past-tense ending.
✅ พรุ่งนี้หลังจากประชุมเสร็จ ผมจะกลับบ้านครับ
phrung ni lang chak prachum set phom cha klap ban khrap
Tomorrow, after the meeting finishes, I'll go home. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ก่อน + event establishes an earlier event; event + ก่อน commonly means do it first.
- หลัง + noun/event label is compact; หลังจาก + clause clearly introduces a fuller later frame.
- Shared participants may be omitted, but different temporal-clause subjects should be explicit.
- แล้ว and อยู่ add attained or continuing viewpoints; neither turns ก่อน or หลัง into tense.
- Past and future interpretations come from the larger anchor, while ก่อน and หลัง encode relative order.
