ตั้งแต่…จน Temporal and Scalar Spans

The frame ตั้งแต่ X จน(ถึง) Y stretches one situation from a left boundary X through a right boundary Y: ตั้งแต่เช้าจนเย็น “from morning until evening.” X and Y can be clock times, dates, stages, whole events, or endpoints on an ordered scale.

Thai does not insert tense into the verbs inside the span. It builds the range through parallel endpoint expressions, then uses มา, แล้ว, time words, and discourse context to show whether the span is completed or still open. The choice between จน and จนถึง depends chiefly on the shape of the right endpoint, not on a one-word English distinction between until and to.

Match each endpoint to the right frame

ศูนย์บริการเปิดตั้งแต่แปดโมงเช้าจนถึงสองทุ่มค่ะ

sun borikan poet tangtae paet mong chao chon thueng song thum kha

The service center is open from eight in the morning until eight in the evening. (formal-polite information, female voice; two clock-time endpoints)

ฝนตกตลอดทางตั้งแต่รถออกจากกรุงเทพฯ จนรถถึงเชียงใหม่ค่ะ

fon tok talot thang tangtae rot ok chak krung thep chon rot thueng chiang mai kha

It rained all the way from when the bus left Bangkok until it reached Chiang Mai. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; two full event boundaries)

With a noun-like point, จนถึง explicitly marks arrival at that point. Before a clause, bare จน is normally lighter: จนรถถึงเชียงใหม่. จนถึงตอนที่รถถึงเชียงใหม่ is also possible, but it packages the endpoint more heavily as “up to the time when the bus arrived.”

The ตั้งแต่ aspect guide focuses on a single starting boundary. Adding จน(ถึง) closes the other side or makes an ordered endpoint explicit.

💡
Build X and Y in parallel whenever possible: time with time, event with event, category with category. Parallel endpoints let the listener recognize the extent before having to reinterpret either edge.

Closed spans and spans continuing to now

A right endpoint closes a range. Without one, ตั้งแต่ X มา presents continuity from X up to the current reference point.

เราตรวจข้อมูลตั้งแต่เดือนมกราคมจนถึงปลายเดือนมิถุนายนครับ

rao truat khomun tangtae duean mokkarakhom chon thueng plai duean mithunayon khrap

We checked the data from January through the end of June. (formal-polite retrospective report, male speaker; closed span)

ตั้งแต่เปลี่ยนงานมาผมนอนหลับดีขึ้นครับ

tangtae plian ngan ma phom non lap di khuen khrap

I have slept better since changing jobs. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker; postclausal มา links the starting point to now)

In the second sentence, มา does not mean physical “come” by itself. In ตั้งแต่...มา, it tracks a situation forward from the boundary to the speaker’s current viewpoint. The unchanged นอนหลับ is interpreted as continuing because of the span and context, not because it carries an English perfect ending.

Formal progress reports often use จนถึงขณะนี้ (formal) “up to the present”:

ตั้งแต่เริ่มโครงการจนถึงขณะนี้ยังไม่มีรายงานอุบัติเหตุครับ

tangtae roem khrongkan chon thueng khana ni yang mai mi raingan ubattihet khrap

From the start of the project up to the present, no accidents have been reported. (formal progress report, male voice; open endpoint stated explicitly)

ยัง confirms that the negative state remains current. It is not required in every open span, but here it makes continuing nonoccurrence explicit.

💡
Use a right endpoint to close the span. Use ตั้งแต่ X มา or formal ตั้งแต่ X จนถึงขณะนี้ when the path continues to the current reference point; มา contributes continuity, not past tense.

Whole clauses and participant continuity

Each boundary may contain its own subject and predicate. When the same participant remains active, Thai can omit repeated subjects:

เธอใช้เวลาสองปีตั้งแต่เริ่มฝึกจนพูดต่อหน้าคนอื่นได้ค่ะ

thoe chai wela song pi tangtae roem fuek chon phut to na khon uen dai kha

It took her two years from beginning her practice until she could speak in front of others. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; the learner is understood in both boundary clauses)

That sentence is grammatical but information-heavy; in ordinary speech, เธอใช้เวลาสองปีกว่าจะพูดต่อหน้าคนอื่นได้ may be more idiomatic if delay is the real point. The span frame is useful when both the starting and ending stages matter.

When participants change, name them:

ตั้งแต่ลูกค้าแจ้งปัญหาจนทีมช่างแก้ไขเสร็จใช้เวลาประมาณสามชั่วโมงครับ

tangtae lukkha chaeng panha chon thim chang kaekhai set chai wela praman sam chua mong khrap

It took about three hours from the customer reporting the problem until the technical team finished fixing it. (formal-polite service report, male speaker; each boundary has its own subject)

No gap or resumptive pronoun is created by จน. These are complete boundary clauses. An omitted object such as the problem after แก้ไข is recovered from discourse in the ordinary Thai way; repeat it when another possible object intervenes.

Temporal spans versus scalar spans

The same frame can order degrees, roles, sizes, or levels. In scalar use, ตั้งแต่ X จนถึง Y conventionally includes the region between its extremes.

ระบบรองรับผู้ใช้ตั้งแต่สิบคนจนถึงหนึ่งพันคนพร้อมกันครับ

rabop rongrap phu chai tangtae sip khon chon thueng nueng phan khon phrom kan khrap

The system supports from ten to one thousand users simultaneously. (formal technical statement, male voice; numerical scale with human classifier คน)

การอบรมนี้เหมาะกับทุกคนตั้งแต่ผู้เริ่มต้นจนถึงผู้มีประสบการณ์ค่ะ

kan oprom ni mo kap thuk khon tangtae phu roemton chon thueng phu mi prasopkan kha

This training suits everyone from beginners to experienced participants. (formal-polite information, female voice; ordered experience scale)

The endpoints must support an intelligible ordering. A random pair such as “from coffee to the manager” does not become a scale merely because the frame surrounds it. Unlike English, Thai adds no plural suffix to ผู้ใช้ or ผู้เริ่มต้น; number and inclusiveness come from the quantifier, classifier, and range.

ตั้งแต่…จน versus จาก…ถึง

จาก X ถึง Y neutrally connects a source and goal, so it is natural for travel, page ranges, addresses, and formally listed endpoints. ตั้งแต่ X จน(ถึง) Y more readily profiles the entire stretch and is especially natural for duration or an inclusive progression.

รถรับส่งวิ่งจากอาคารหนึ่งถึงอาคารห้าครับ

rot rap song wing chak akhan nueng thueng akhan ha khrap

The shuttle runs from Building One to Building Five. (formal-polite route information, male speaker; neutral source and goal)

ผมเดินตรวจทุกชั้นตั้งแต่อาคารหนึ่งจนถึงอาคารห้าครับ

phom doen truat thuk chan tangtae akhan nueng chon thueng akhan ha khrap

I walked through and inspected every floor from Building One through Building Five. (formal-polite report, male speaker; the full extent is foregrounded)

The contrast is a tendency, not a prohibition: จากเช้าถึงเย็น and ตั้งแต่กรุงเทพฯ จนถึงเชียงใหม่ are possible. Choose the frame according to whether endpoints alone or traversal of the span is foregrounded.

Clause order and scope

An initial span sets a scene for everything that follows. A final span restricts the immediately preceding predicate:

ตั้งแต่ร้านเปิดจนร้านปิดคุณนิดรับสายแทบไม่หยุดค่ะ

tangtae ran poet chon ran pit khun nit rap sai thaep mai yut kha

From opening until closing, Khun Nit handled calls almost without stopping. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; span scopes over the whole assertion)

คุณนิดอยู่ที่เคาน์เตอร์ตั้งแต่ร้านเปิดจนถึงเที่ยงค่ะ

khun nit yu thi khaotoe tangtae ran poet chon thueng thiang kha

Khun Nit was at the counter from opening until noon. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; final span locates the counter duty)

Negation stays beside the predicate it denies: ไม่หยุด means “not stop” inside the span, whereas ไม่ได้อยู่...ตั้งแต่ X จน Y denies being present across that range. Do not infer negative scope from the English location of not.

Spoken and written choices

All three markers occur in standard Central Thai. Conversation freely shortens a recoverable endpoint—ตั้งแต่เช้าจนเย็น—and uses zero participants. Formal and academic writing favors fully parallel endpoints and จนถึง before complex noun phrases. Neither register uses a different tense system.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two colleagues check the hours for an event.

พรุ่งนี้เราต้องอยู่หน้างานตั้งแต่กี่โมงถึงกี่โมงคะ

phrung ni rao tong yu na ngan tangtae ki mong thueng ki mong kha

Tomorrow, from what time until what time do we have to be on site? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; paired time variables)

ตั้งแต่เจ็ดโมงเช้าจนถึงหกโมงเย็นครับ

tangtae chet mong chao chon thueng hok mong yen khrap

From seven in the morning until six in the evening. (ordinary-polite answer, male speaker; predicate omitted as given)

แล้วต้องมีคนอยู่ตลอดไหมคะ

laeo tong mi khon yu talot mai kha

And does someone have to be there the whole time? (ordinary-polite follow-up, female speaker)

ครับ ตั้งแต่แขกคนแรกมาถึงจนคนสุดท้ายกลับต้องมีเจ้าหน้าที่อยู่ครับ

khrap tangtae khaek khon raek ma thueng chon khon sutthai klap tong mi chaonathi yu khrap

Yes. Staff must be present from the first guest’s arrival until the last person leaves. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; different endpoint participants stated)

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing the start and endpoint markers

❌ จนถึงห้าโมงตั้งแต่เก้าโมงร้านเปิดค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—the ตั้งแต่ boundary precedes the จนถึง endpoint.

✅ ร้านเปิดตั้งแต่เก้าโมงจนถึงห้าโมงค่ะ

ran poet tangtae kao mong chon thueng ha mong kha

The shop is open from nine until five. (ordinary-polite information, female voice)

2. Using a starting-point marker for elapsed duration

❌ ผมรอมาตั้งแต่สามชั่วโมงครับ

Incorrect for ‘I have waited for three hours’—สามชั่วโมง is an amount, not a starting point.

✅ ผมรอมาสามชั่วโมงแล้วครับ

phom ro ma sam chua mong laeo khrap

I have been waiting for three hours. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker; duration measures the event)

3. Omitting the changed endpoint subject

❌ ตั้งแต่ลูกค้าโทรมาจนแก้ปัญหาเสร็จใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

Ambiguous if technicians—not the customer—finished solving the problem.

✅ ตั้งแต่ลูกค้าโทรมาจนช่างแก้ปัญหาเสร็จใช้เวลาสองชั่วโมงค่ะ

tangtae lukkha thora ma chon chang kae panha set chai wela song chua mong kha

It took two hours from the customer’s call until the technician solved the problem. (formal-polite report, female speaker)

4. Adding English-style past auxiliaries at both boundaries

❌ ตั้งแต่ได้รถออกจนได้รถถึงเชียงใหม่ฝนตกค่ะ

Incorrect neutral narration—ได้ is not a general past-tense marker.

✅ ตั้งแต่รถออกจนรถถึงเชียงใหม่ฝนตกตลอดทางค่ะ

tangtae rot ok chon rot thueng chiang mai fon tok talot thang kha

It rained throughout the journey from the bus’s departure until it reached Chiang Mai. (ordinary-polite past report, female speaker)

5. Building a scalar span with English noun order

❌ ตั้งแต่หนึ่งผู้ใช้จนถึงพันผู้ใช้ระบบรองรับได้ครับ

Incorrect Thai quantity order—human counts require noun + number + classifier.

✅ ระบบรองรับผู้ใช้ตั้งแต่หนึ่งคนจนถึงหนึ่งพันคนครับ

rabop rongrap phu chai tangtae nueng khon chon thueng nueng phan khon khrap

The system supports from one to one thousand users. (formal technical statement, male voice)

Key Takeaways

Use ตั้งแต่ for the left boundary and จน/จนถึง for the right. Prefer จนถึง before a point-like noun phrase and จน before a full endpoint clause, while recognizing natural overlap. ตั้งแต่ X มา leaves the span open to the reference point. Keep endpoint expressions parallel, state participants when they change, and let aspect and context—not invented tense—show whether the span is closed, continuing, or viewed retrospectively.
