Thai จน connects a situation with the limit or consequence it reaches: รอจนร้านปิด “wait until the shop closes,” ฝนตกจนถนนท่วม “it rained until/as a result the road flooded,” and เหนื่อยจนหลับ “be so tired that one falls asleep.” The material after จน is not an infinitive. It predicates the boundary whose realization completes or measures the preceding situation.
English divides these relations among until, so...that, and to the point of. Thai uses one constructional family, while context and the kinds of predicates determine whether time, degree, or causation is foregrounded.
An event continuing to a boundary
ฉันรอจนร้านปิดค่ะ แต่เขาก็ไม่มา
chan ro chon ran pit kha tae khao ko mai ma
I waited until the shop closed, but he still didn't come. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; shop closure bounds the waiting)
The subject of รอ is ฉัน. The clause after จน has its own subject ร้าน and predicate ปิด. This is a boundary construction, not a shared-subject chain in which the speaker closes the shop.
พนักงานทำงานจนรถไฟเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกครับ
phanak ngan tham ngan chon rotfai thiao sutthai ok khrap
The employee worked until the last train left. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; departure sets the limit)
เราคุยกันจนเกือบเที่ยงคืนค่ะ
rao khui kan chon kueap thiang khuen kha
We talked until almost midnight. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; time phrase supplies the boundary)
จน can precede a full clause, a time expression, or a state. Thai predicates remain unchanged; past reference comes from context, not conjugation.
A cause or degree reaching a consequence
เมื่อคืนฝนตกหนักจนถนนหน้าตลาดน้ำท่วมค่ะ
muea khuen fon tok nak chon thanon na talat nam thuam kha
Last night it rained so heavily that the road in front of the market flooded. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; rain reaches a consequential threshold)
เด็กเหนื่อยจนหลับบนรถครับ
dek nueai chon lap bon rot khrap
The child was so tired that they fell asleep in the car. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; one participant bears the state and consequence)
เธอหัวเราะจนปวดท้องค่ะ
thoe huaro chon puat thong kha
She laughed until her stomach hurt. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; laughing produces a bodily consequence)
These examples need different participant maps. The child is tired and sleeps; she laughs and experiences pain; the rain falls but the road floods. จน licenses a result boundary without requiring every predicate to share one subject.
| Before จน | After จน | Relation | Productive model |
|---|---|---|---|
| durative activity | new event | temporal limit | รอจนรถมา |
| activity | time expression | clock boundary | ทำงานจนดึก |
| degree/state | same participant's result | degree consequence | เหนื่อยจนหลับ |
| cause/event | different participant's state | causal consequence | ลมพัดจนป้ายล้ม |
| action on patient | patient's threshold | explicit result | เช็ดกระจกจนใส |
| negative continuation | boundary clause | not before/until | จะไม่กลับจนกว่างานจะเสร็จ |
Bare result versus explicit จน
A conventional resultative can place the result directly after the action and patient. จน makes the limit or causal development explicit and supports relations that a bare chain might leave unclear.
พนักงานเช็ดกระจกใสแล้วค่ะ
phanak ngan chet krachok sai laeo kha
The employee has wiped the glass clear. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; compact conventional action–result chain)
พนักงานเช็ดกระจกจนใสแล้วค่ะ
phanak ngan chet krachok chon sai laeo kha
The employee kept wiping the glass until it was clear. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; explicit threshold and process)
The second version foregrounds persistence toward the limit. จน does not merely decorate the first: it changes how the event is construed.
เขาพูดเบาจนฉันไม่ได้ยินค่ะ
khao phut bao chon chan mai dai yin kha
He spoke so quietly that I couldn't hear him. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; result has a different experiencer)
Without จน, simply juxtaposing พูดเบา ฉันไม่ได้ยิน would invite a clause boundary and leave the causal relation less explicit.
จนกว่า...จะ for a pending boundary
For “until” with a boundary still pending or viewed prospectively, จนกว่า + subject + จะ + predicate is common. The exact choice of จะ is construction- and context-sensitive, not future-tense agreement.
ผมจะรอจนกว่าคุณจะตรวจเสร็จครับ
phom cha ro chon kwa khun cha truat set khrap
I'll wait until you finish checking. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; future boundary has its own subject)
อย่าปิดเครื่องจนกว่าระบบจะอัปเดตเสร็จนะคะ
aya pit khrueang chon kwa rabop cha apdet set na kha
Don't turn off the device until the system finishes updating. (ordinary polite warning, female speaker)
In past narration with an attained boundary, plain จน is often enough: รอจนเขามาถึง “waited until he arrived.” The fuller จนกว่า...จะ highlights the limit before its realization. The from–until page treats the wider family of temporal boundaries.
จนถึง and lexical จน are different
จนถึง marks a range endpoint or arrival at a point: ตั้งแต่วันจันทร์จนถึงวันศุกร์ “from Monday through Friday.” It does not necessarily express a caused result. Meanwhile, adjective จน means “poor”: ครอบครัวนี้จน “this family is poor.” That lexical property predicate is not the boundary linker taught here. See from–until ranges for the full range construction.
ร้านเปิดตั้งแต่เก้าโมงจนถึงหกโมงเย็นค่ะ
ran poet tangtae kao mong chon thueng hok mong yen kha
The shop is open from nine in the morning until six in the evening. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; range endpoint)
The similarity in spelling is real, but syntactic frame prevents confusion.
Aspect and negation scope
An ongoing marker can frame the process before the limit; แล้ว can present the result as attained.
ตอนนี้ฝนกำลังตกจนมองถนนแทบไม่เห็นค่ะ
ton ni fon kamlang tok chon mong thanon thaep mai hen kha
It's raining so hard now that the road is barely visible. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; ongoing cause with current consequence)
เขาจะไม่กลับจนกว่างานจะเสร็จครับ
khao cha mai klap chon kwa ngan cha set khrap
He won't return until the work is finished. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; return is excluded before the boundary)
The last sentence does not say that he returns repeatedly in a negative way. จะไม่กลับ excludes return before the completion boundary. English negative placement cannot be copied mechanically.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers are deciding whether to leave:
เราต้องรอจนประชุมจบไหมคะ
rao tong ro chon prachum chop mai kha
Do we need to wait until the meeting ends? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ หัวหน้าขอให้อยู่จนทุกคนเซ็นชื่อครบ
chai khrap hua na kho hai yu chon thuk khon sen chue khrop
Yes. The supervisor asked us to stay until everyone has signed. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้ารอนานจนรถไฟหมดจะกลับอย่างไรคะ
tha ro nan chon rotfai mot cha klap yangrai kha
If we wait so long that the trains stop running, how will we get back? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ผมเรียกรถไว้แล้วครับ ไม่ต้องกังวล
phom riak rot wai laeo khrap mai tong kangwon
I've arranged a car already; don't worry. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating the boundary as an infinitive
❌ ฉันรอจนที่จะร้านปิดค่ะ
Incorrect—ร้านปิด is a clause naming the boundary; ที่จะ is not a general infinitive marker.
✅ ฉันรอจนร้านขายยาปิดค่ะ
chan ro chon ran khai ya pit kha
I waited until the pharmacy closed. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Carrying the first subject into a new-subject result
❌ ฝนตกหนักจนฝนถนนท่วมค่ะ
Incorrect participant linking—the road, not the rain, bears the flooded state.
✅ ฝนตกหนักจนถนนหน้าบ้านน้ำท่วมค่ะ
fon tok nak chon thanon na ban nam thuam kha
It rained so heavily that the road in front of the house flooded. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
3. Using แล้ว as if it named an explicit consequence
❌ เขาพูดเบาแล้วฉันไม่ได้ยินค่ะ
Wrong for the intended clear causal reading; แล้ว primarily advances or updates discourse, while จน marks the consequence.
✅ เขาพูดเบาจนคนข้างหลังไม่ได้ยินค่ะ
khao phut bao chon khon khang lang mai dai yin kha
He spoke so quietly that the people in the back couldn't hear. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
4. Reading adjective จน as an endpoint linker
❌ ครอบครัวนี้จนค่ะ แปลว่าครอบครัวเป็นจุดสิ้นสุด
Incorrect analysis—here จน is the property predicate ‘poor,’ not a boundary marker.
✅ ครอบครัวนี้มีรายได้น้อยค่ะ
khropkhrua ni mi raidai noi kha
This family has a low income. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; paraphrase of the property reading)
5. Copying English negative order after the boundary
❌ ผมจะรอจนคุณตรวจจะไม่เสร็จครับ
Incorrect for ‘wait until you finish’; the negative reverses the intended boundary.
✅ ผมจะรอจนกว่าคุณจะตรวจรายงานเสร็จครับ
phom cha ro chon kwa khun cha truat raingan set khrap
I'll wait until you finish checking the report. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- จน links an event or degree to the boundary or consequence it reaches.
- The result may keep the first participant or introduce a new subject; map roles explicitly.
- Bare resultatives are tighter and lexically restricted; จน openly marks the threshold.
- จนกว่า...จะ is common for a pending boundary, while จนถึง marks a range endpoint.
