Thai ยิ่ง P ยิ่ง Q correlates two changing scales: as the degree, frequency, duration, or extent of P increases, Q changes correspondingly. ยิ่งอ่าน ยิ่งเข้าใจ does not merely say “read a lot” and “understand a lot”; it claims that increasing reading brings increasing understanding.
English marks both halves with the plus a comparative. Thai repeats ยิ่ง, leaves predicates uninflected, and may add ก็ before the second ยิ่ง. Subjects, negative markers, degree words, and explicit scale phrases show exactly what is varying.
This differs from an ordinary comparison with กว่า, which compares two values at a chosen point. A ยิ่ง correlative tracks how two scales change together across possible points.
The paired correlative frame
The compact pattern is ยิ่ง + predicate 1, ยิ่ง + predicate 2. With an overt subject in the second clause, ก็ often follows that subject and leads into ยิ่ง.
| Frame | Example core | Relation |
|---|---|---|
| ยิ่ง P ยิ่ง Q | ยิ่งฝึกยิ่งคล่อง | two compact predicate scales |
| subject + ยิ่ง P, subject + ก็ยิ่ง Q | เด็กยิ่งโต ค่าใช้จ่ายก็ยิ่งสูง | subjects or topics made explicit |
| ยิ่ง P มากเท่าไร, Q ก็ยิ่ง...มากเท่านั้น | ยิ่งศึกษามากเท่าไร ยิ่งเห็นมากเท่านั้น | fully explicit degree matching |
| ยิ่งไม่ P, ก็ยิ่ง Q | ยิ่งไม่ถามก็ยิ่งสับสน | increase in a negative or absent behavior |
ยิ่งฝึกฟังทุกวันก็ยิ่งจับใจความได้เร็วขึ้นครับ
ying fuek fang thuk wan ko ying chap chai khwam dai reo khuen khrap
The more you practice listening every day, the faster you can grasp the main point. (ordinary-polite advice, male speaker)
เด็กยิ่งโต ค่าใช้จ่ายก็ยิ่งสูงขึ้นค่ะ
dek ying to kha chai chai ko ying sung khuen kha
The older children grow, the higher the expenses become. (ordinary-polite observation, female speaker)
ยิ่งใกล้วันส่งงาน ทีมก็ยิ่งประชุมบ่อยขึ้นครับ
ying klai wan song ngan thim ko ying prachum boi khuen khrap
The closer the deadline gets, the more often the team meets. (ordinary-polite workplace observation, male speaker)
In the second example, เด็ก is the changing participant in P, while ค่าใช้จ่าย is the quantity changing in Q. Thai does not need comparative inflection on โต, สูง, or บ่อย; ยิ่ง and ขึ้น establish direction.
Where subjects and ก็ go
A subject can precede ยิ่ง when the scalar predicate directly comments on it: เด็กยิ่งโต “as the child grows.” If the first ยิ่ง frames a larger circumstance, it can precede that material: ยิ่งใกล้วันส่งงาน... “the closer it gets to the deadline.”
The second-clause correlate is (subject) + ก็ + ยิ่ง + predicate, not subject + ยิ่ง + ก็.
คุณยิ่งอธิบายละเอียด ลูกค้าก็ยิ่งสับสนค่ะ
khun ying athibai laiat luk kha ko ying sapson kha
The more detail you explain, the more confused the customer becomes. (ordinary-polite critical observation, female speaker)
ยิ่งเวลาผ่านไป ผมก็ยิ่งมั่นใจในการตัดสินใจครั้งนี้ครับ
ying wela phan pai phom ko ying manchai nai kan tatsinchai khrang ni khrap
As more time passes, I become more confident in this decision. (formal-polite reflection, male speaker)
The participants differ in the first: คุณ explains, but ลูกค้า becomes confused. In the second, elapsed time sets the first scale and the speaker's confidence supplies the second. Omit a repeated subject only when reference remains secure.
Direction can increase or decrease
ยิ่ง intensifies the scale named by its following material. That scale can itself be negative or downward, so Q need not become numerically larger.
ยิ่งรีบก็ยิ่งลืมของค่ะ
ying rip ko ying luem khong kha
The more I rush, the more things I forget. (ordinary-polite self-observation, female speaker)
ยิ่งลดน้ำตาล รสชาติก็ยิ่งอ่อนลงครับ
ying lot namtan rot chat ko ying on long khrap
The more you reduce the sugar, the milder the flavor becomes. (ordinary-polite cooking explanation, male speaker)
ยิ่งไม่ถามก็ยิ่งเข้าใจผิดค่ะ
ying mai tham ko ying khao chai phit kha
The more you avoid asking, the more you misunderstand. (ordinary-polite warning, female speaker)
In ยิ่งลด, the extent of reducing increases; in ยิ่งอ่อนลง, mildness increases while flavor intensity decreases. In ยิ่งไม่ถาม, the relevant scale can be duration, frequency, or persistence of not asking. Context must make that interpretation plausible.
มากขึ้น and other explicit direction markers
The paired ยิ่ง already signals covariation, but adding ขึ้น, ลง, มากขึ้น, น้อยลง, เร็วขึ้น, or บ่อยขึ้น makes the direction more precise.
ยิ่งอ่านเอกสารนี้ก็ยิ่งเห็นว่าปัญหาซับซ้อนขึ้นครับ
ying an ekkasan ni ko ying hen wa panha sapson khuen khrap
The more I read this document, the more I see that the problem is becoming more complex. (formal-polite assessment, male speaker)
ยิ่งใช้ระบบนาน ข้อผิดพลาดก็ยิ่งปรากฏน้อยลงค่ะ
ying chai rabop nan kho phit phlat ko ying prakot noi long kha
The longer the system is used, the fewer errors appear. (formal-polite technical observation, female voice)
The second sentence explicitly pairs greater duration with fewer observed errors. Simply glossing both ยิ่ง tokens as more would obscure the inverse direction of the error scale.
The expanded มากเท่าไร…มากเท่านั้น pattern
For careful explanation, Thai can spell out the correspondence with มากเท่าไร “to whatever greater extent” and มากเท่านั้น “to that same extent.” ก็ยิ่ง still links the second scale to the first.
ยิ่งเก็บข้อมูลมากเท่าไร ข้อสรุปก็ยิ่งน่าเชื่อถือมากเท่านั้น
ying kep khomun mak thao rai kho sarup ko ying na chuea thue mak thao nan
The more data are collected, the more credible the conclusion becomes. (academic register)
ยิ่งชะลอการซ่อมนานเท่าไร ค่าใช้จ่ายก็ยิ่งเพิ่มขึ้นมากเท่านั้นครับ
ying chalo kan som nan thao rai kha chai chai ko ying phoem khuen mak thao nan khrap
The longer the repair is delayed, the more the cost increases. (formal-polite professional warning, male voice)
This expanded form is useful when two quantities must be related explicitly, but it can sound heavy in casual speech. Everyday Thai usually prefers the compact ยิ่งนานยิ่งแพง “the longer, the more expensive.”
ยิ่งนานยิ่งแพงค่ะ
ying nan ying phaeng kha
The longer it takes, the more expensive it gets. (ordinary-polite concise assessment, female speaker)
Correlation is not automatic causation
The construction asserts covariation from the speaker's chosen perspective. It often suggests causation, but grammar alone does not prove that P causes Q.
ยิ่งยอดขายเพิ่ม งบโฆษณาก็ยิ่งสูงขึ้นค่ะ
ying yot khai phoem ngop khotsana ko ying sung khuen kha
The more sales increase, the higher the advertising budget becomes. (formal-polite business observation, female voice)
This could mean that rising sales fund more advertising, that advertising drives sales, or that both respond to growth. A report that needs a causal claim must state and support it separately. The first clause is the discourse basis, not necessarily a scientifically established cause.
Paired ยิ่ง versus standalone ยิ่ง
A single ยิ่ง can mean “even more” or “all the better” when an existing comparison or expectation supplies the standard. That is an intensifier, not an incomplete correlative.
ถ้าส่งร่างวันนี้ได้ยิ่งดีครับ
tha song rang wan ni dai ying di khrap
If you can send the draft today, that would be even better. (ordinary-polite preference, male speaker; standalone intensifier)
พอได้คุยกับทีมโดยตรงก็ยิ่งมั่นใจค่ะ
pho dai khui kap thim doi trong ko ying manchai kha
After speaking with the team directly, I'm even more confident. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; prior confidence is understood)
In a paired correlative, the first ยิ่ง introduces the changing basis and the second introduces the covarying result. With standalone ยิ่ง, discourse has already supplied the comparison point.
An ordinary-polite study dialogue
ทำไมช่วงนี้ฟังข่าวรู้เรื่องมากขึ้นคะ
thammai chuang ni fang khao ru rueang mak khuen kha
Why do you understand the news better lately? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)
ยิ่งฟังทุกเช้า ผมก็ยิ่งคุ้นกับคำที่ใช้ในข่าวครับ
ying fang thuk chao phom ko ying khun kap kham thi chai nai khao khrap
The more I listen every morning, the more familiar I become with the vocabulary used in the news. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าจดคำใหม่ด้วยก็น่าจะยิ่งจำได้ดีนะคะ
tha chot kham mai duai ko na cha ying cham dai di na kha
If you write down the new words too, you'll probably remember them even better. (ordinary-polite suggestion, female speaker; standalone ยิ่ง)
The man's turn is a full correlative. The woman's reply contains only standalone ยิ่ง because the earlier improvement supplies a comparison point; ถ้า...ก็... provides a separate conditional frame.
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English comparative words instead of the Thai pair
❌ มากเราฝึก มากเราเข้าใจครับ
Incorrect—Thai does not translate both instances of English ‘the more’ with fronted มาก.
✅ ยิ่งฝึกก็ยิ่งเข้าใจครับ
ying fuek ko ying khao chai khrap
The more you practice, the more you understand. (ordinary-polite advice, male speaker)
2. Putting ก็ after the second ยิ่ง
❌ เด็กยิ่งโต ค่าใช้จ่ายยิ่งก็สูงค่ะ
Incorrect order—the second-clause subject is followed by ก็ยิ่ง, not ยิ่งก็.
✅ เด็กยิ่งโต ค่าใช้จ่ายก็ยิ่งสูงค่ะ
dek ying to kha chai chai ko ying sung kha
The older children grow, the higher the expenses become. (ordinary-polite observation, female speaker)
3. Separating negation from the predicate it scopes over
❌ ยิ่งไม่ถาม ไม่ก็ยิ่งเข้าใจครับ
Incorrect order—negation belongs after the second ยิ่ง when the increasing result is non-understanding.
✅ ยิ่งไม่ถามก็ยิ่งไม่เข้าใจครับ
ying mai tham ko ying mai khao chai khrap
The more you avoid asking, the less you understand. (ordinary-polite warning, male speaker)
4. Moving the second ยิ่ง to the end
❌ ยิ่งฝึกก็เข้าใจมากขึ้นยิ่งค่ะ
Incorrect—the second ยิ่ง introduces its scale and cannot trail the completed predicate.
✅ ยิ่งฝึกก็ยิ่งเข้าใจมากขึ้นค่ะ
ying fuek ko ying khao chai mak khuen kha
The more you practice, the more your understanding improves. (ordinary-polite encouragement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Paired ยิ่ง...ยิ่ง... relates two changing scales. Put an overt subject before the ยิ่ง that modifies its predicate, and place consequence-linking ก็ before the second ยิ่ง. Direction words make increases and decreases explicit, มากเท่าไร...มากเท่านั้น expands a formal degree match, and standalone ยิ่ง means “even more” only when context supplies the comparison point.
