Thai coordinates words, phrases, and clauses with linkers such as และ “and,” แต่ “but,” หรือ “or,” แล้ว/แล้วก็ “and then,” and ส่วน “as for/by contrast.” What differs sharply from English is how little repeated material Thai needs once participants and predicates are active.
In ผมชอบชาแต่ไม่ชอบกาแฟ, the second clause does not repeat ผม because the same subject remains obvious. In คุณนิดส่งไฟล์แล้วคุณอรก็ตรวจ, the new actor must be spoken. Coordination is therefore guided by information continuity: omit what is recoverable, but pronounce the constituent that changes or contrasts.
Match the linker to the relation
Thai does not have one all-purpose equivalent of English and. The main choices package different semantic relations and registers.
| Linker | Typical scope | Relation | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| และ | noun phrases, predicates, clauses | neutral addition | neutral; especially common in writing |
| กับ | noun phrases | coordination or accompaniment | neutral conversation |
| แต่ | predicates or clauses | contrast | neutral |
| หรือ | phrases or clauses | alternative | neutral |
| แล้ว/แล้วก็ | clauses | sequence or discourse advance | neutral conversation |
| ส่วน | topic plus comment | contrastive topic shift | neutral to formal |
| ทั้ง...และ... | parallel constituents | emphatic “both...and...” | neutral to formal |
คุณนิดกับคุณอรจะไปพบลูกค้าพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ
khun nit kap khun on cha pai phop lukkha phrung ni kha
Khun Nit and Khun On will meet the customer tomorrow. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; กับ coordinates noun phrases)
รายงานฉบับนี้สั้นแต่ให้ข้อมูลครบครับ
raingan chabap ni san tae hai khomun khrop khrap
This report is short but gives complete information. (ordinary-polite assessment, male speaker; แต่ contrasts predicates)
คุณจะรับใบเสร็จทางอีเมลหรือรับที่เคาน์เตอร์คะ
khun cha rap bai set thang imel rue rap thi khaotoe kha
Would you like the receipt by email or will you collect it at the counter? (ordinary-polite alternative question, female speaker)
กับ can also mean “with”: ผมคุยกับหัวหน้า has one subject and a companion/interlocutor, not a coordinated subject. Predicate frames and position distinguish that from ผมกับหัวหน้าคุยกัน “my supervisor and I talked with each other.”
Shared subjects normally remain unspoken
When the same participant controls coordinated predicates, Thai usually states that participant once.
เช้านี้ผมตรวจสัญญาและส่งให้ฝ่ายกฎหมายแล้วครับ
chao ni phom truat sanya lae song hai fai kotmai laeo khrap
This morning I checked the contract and sent it to Legal. (ordinary-polite update, male speaker; shared subject and object)
ห้องนี้กว้างและสว่างแต่เสียงจากถนนค่อนข้างดังค่ะ
hong ni kwang lae sawang tae siang chak thanon khonkhang dang kha
This room is spacious and bright, but the street noise is rather loud. (ordinary-polite assessment, female speaker; property coordination followed by a new subject)
คุณมาลีเป็นล่ามและผู้ประสานงานโครงการครับ
khun mali pen lam lae phu prasan ngan khrongkan khrap
Khun Mali is an interpreter and the project coordinator. (ordinary-polite identification, male speaker; two nominal roles under one เป็น)
The first example does not repeat ผม or สัญญา before ส่ง. In the second, ห้องนี้ supports two properties, but เสียงจากถนน must be overt because it becomes a new subject. In the third, one เป็น scopes over coordinated classifying complements; copying English is before both nouns would be unnecessary.
Minimal contrast: continuous topic or new actor
คุณนิดรับเอกสารแล้วส่งต่อให้บัญชีค่ะ
khun nit rap ekkasan laeo song to hai banchi kha
Khun Nit received the document and then forwarded it to Accounting. (ordinary-polite narration, female speaker; same subject continues)
คุณนิดรับเอกสารแล้วคุณอรก็ส่งต่อให้บัญชีค่ะ
khun nit rap ekkasan laeo khun on ko song to hai banchi kha
Khun Nit received the document, and then Khun On forwarded it to Accounting. (ordinary-polite narration, female speaker; overt new subject)
Omitting คุณอร from the second sentence would change the default interpretation, not merely make it shorter. Thai zero reference normally continues the accessible actor until a new or contrastive noun phrase resets it.
Objects may remain recoverable across the same boundary. The second example omits เอกสาร after ส่งต่อ, but the only salient transferable object remains the document. Subject and object omission are independent choices.
Coordination versus a serial construction
A linker often supports coordination, but meaning matters more than the mere presence or absence of “and.”
ฉันขับรถไปรับแม่ที่สถานีค่ะ
chan khap rot pai rap mae thi sathani kha
I'm driving to pick Mum up at the station. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; integrated motion–purpose chain)
ฉันขับรถไปสถานี แล้วก็รอแม่อยู่หน้าทางเข้าค่ะ
chan khap rot pai sathani laeo ko ro mae yu na thang khao kha
I drove to the station and then waited for Mum by the entrance. (ordinary-polite narration, female speaker; successive assertions)
The first chain packages driving, direction, and purpose as one complex event. The second makes arrival at the station a discourse stage before advancing to waiting. Same subject alone does not force serialization; linkers, aspect domains, pause, and independent relevance all contribute. Borderline same-subject sequences genuinely admit more than one analysis, so use the diagnostics together.
For a fuller diagnostic comparison, see serial verbs versus coordinated clauses. That distinction is constructional rather than a mechanical count of predicates.
Coordination across predicate types
Property, copular, locative, and existential clauses can all be coordinated, but omitted material must still be licensed by their own frames.
ห้องประชุมอยู่ชั้นสอง แต่ห้องอาหารอยู่ชั้นล่างค่ะ
hong prachum yu chan song tae hong ahan yu chan lang kha
The meeting room is on the second floor, but the dining room is downstairs. (ordinary-polite locative contrast, female speaker; both located entities stated)
ด้านหน้ามีที่จอดรถ แต่ด้านหลังไม่มีครับ
dan na mi thi chot rot tae dan lang maimi khrap
There is parking at the front, but none at the back. (ordinary-polite existential contrast, male speaker; parking is recoverable after ไม่มี)
คุณเอกเป็นผู้อนุมัติ ส่วนคุณนิดดูแลเรื่องการเงินค่ะ
khun ek pen phu anumat suan khun nit dulae rueang kan ngoen kha
Khun Ek is the approver; Khun Nit handles financial matters. (ordinary-polite topic contrast, female speaker; copular and verbal clauses)
Thai does not insert a common form of be merely to make coordinated clauses parallel. The first predicate may be เป็น, while the second is an ordinary transitive verb; semantic parallelism is enough.
Addition, contrast, sequence, and alternatives
และ is natural in lists, formal prose, and balanced statements. Everyday narration often prefers zero linking or แล้วก็. แต่ signals an expectation contrast. หรือ keeps alternatives open and also occurs in questions. ส่วน deliberately changes the comparison topic.
โครงการนี้ช่วยทั้งลดค่าใช้จ่ายและประหยัดเวลาครับ
khrongkan ni chuai thang lot kha chai chai lae prayat wela khrap
This project helps both reduce costs and save time. (formal-polite presentation, male voice; paired parallel predicates)
วันนี้ร้านเปิดตามปกติ แต่พรุ่งนี้จะปิดเร็วกว่าปกติค่ะ
wan ni ran poet tam pokkati tae phrung ni cha pit reo kwa pokkati kha
Today the shop is open as usual, but tomorrow it will close earlier than usual. (ordinary-polite notice, female voice; contrasting time frames)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues divide tasks:
พรุ่งนี้ใครจะรับแขกและใครจะเตรียมห้องคะ
phrung ni khrai cha rap khaek lae khrai cha triam hong kha
Tomorrow, who will receive the guests and who will prepare the room? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; two questioned subjects)
ผมจะรับแขกครับ ส่วนคุณนิดจะเตรียมห้อง
phom cha rap khaek khrap suan khun nit cha triam hong
I'll receive the guests; Khun Nit will prepare the room. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; ส่วน marks the topic contrast)
แล้วเรื่องอาหาร ให้ฉันสั่งหรือให้คุณนิดสั่งคะ
laeo rueang ahan hai chan sang rue hai khun nit sang kha
And regarding the food, should I order it or should Khun Nit? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; explicit alternative actors)
คุณสั่งได้เลยครับ แล้วส่งใบเสร็จมาให้ผมด้วย
khun sang dai loei khrap laeo song bai set ma hai phom duai
You can order it. Then send me the receipt too. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; food order omitted as recoverable)
Common Mistakes
1. Omitting a changed subject
❌ คุณนิดคุยกับคุณอรแล้วส่งเอกสารค่ะ
Wrong for the intended meaning ‘Khun On sent the document’; without a new subject, คุณนิด remains the default sender.
✅ คุณนิดคุยกับคุณอรแล้วคุณอรก็ส่งเอกสารค่ะ
khun nit khui kap khun on laeo khun on ko song ekkasan kha
Khun Nit spoke with Khun On, and then Khun On sent the document. (ordinary-polite narration, female speaker)
2. Using กับ to coordinate full clauses
❌ ผมตรวจรายงานกับหัวหน้าส่งอีเมลครับ
Incorrect for two asserted clauses—กับ makes หัวหน้า look like a companion or noun-level coordinate instead of opening a new proposition.
✅ ผมตรวจรายงานแล้วหัวหน้าก็ส่งอีเมลครับ
phom truat raingan laeo huana ko song imel khrap
I checked the report, and then the supervisor sent the email. (ordinary-polite narration, male speaker)
3. Stacking incompatible linkers at one boundary
❌ ห้องนี้กว้างและแต่ค่อนข้างมืดค่ะ
Incorrect—และ and แต่ cannot both express the same single link here.
✅ ห้องนี้กว้างแต่ค่อนข้างมืดค่ะ
hong ni kwang tae khonkhang muet kha
This room is spacious but rather dark. (ordinary-polite assessment, female speaker)
4. Treating a new topic as an omitted continuation
❌ ชั้นล่างมีร้านกาแฟ แต่ชั้นบนมี หมายถึงมีร้านอาหารครับ
Incorrect analysis—bare มี continues the active existential category, a coffee shop, rather than introducing a different kind of venue.
✅ ชั้นล่างมีร้านกาแฟ แต่ชั้นบนมีร้านอาหารครับ
chan lang mi ran kafae tae chan bon mi ran ahan khrap
There is a coffee shop downstairs, but there is a restaurant upstairs. (ordinary-polite contrast, male speaker; changed existential item overt)
Key Takeaways
Thai coordination packages addition, contrast, alternatives, sequence, and topic comparison with different linkers. Shared subjects, objects, and predicates may remain unspoken, but changed or contrastive material returns overtly. Distinguish coordinated propositions from integrated serial events through participant continuity, event relation, aspect domains, linkers, and discourse pauses.
