Thai can place several predicates together without a conjunction or a general equivalent of English to: เดินไปรับลูกค้า “walk over to meet a customer,” หยิบแก้วมาล้าง “pick up the glass, bring it over, and wash it,” and นั่งอ่านรายงาน “sit reading a report.” The predicates jointly build one complex event.
Their order is meaningful. It can trace manner into path, motion into purpose, handling into disposal, bodily posture into a simultaneous activity, or an action into its result. This is not a license to concatenate dictionary verbs arbitrarily, and not every adjacent predicate is serial: lexical compounds, complements, coordination, and separate clauses also occur.
Start with the event relation
The productive patterns below expose the major slots. Each row is its own construction; they are not stages that must all appear in one enormous chain.
| Event relation | Productive order | Model |
|---|---|---|
Each predicate remains invariant. English may translate a later predicate with an infinitive, adverb, preposition, participle, or separate clause, but those English categories do not determine the Thai order.
Manner, path, and purpose
Thai normally presents the manner of motion before its path and a journey before its intended purpose.
เจ้าหน้าที่เดินไปรับแขกที่ประตูหน้าครับ
chaonathi doen pai rap khaek thi pratu na khrap
The officer walked over to receive the guests at the front door. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; manner → path → purpose)
เด็กวิ่งกลับมาเอากระเป๋าค่ะ
dek wing klap ma ao krapao kha
The child ran back to get the bag. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; manner → return → toward motion → purpose)
พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะขับรถไปส่งเอกสารที่สาขาค่ะ
phrung ni chan cha khap rot pai song ekkasan thi sakha kha
Tomorrow I'll drive over to deliver the documents at the branch. (ordinary-polite plan, female speaker; future prospect over a vehicle–path–purpose chain)
In เดินไปรับ, walking supplies manner, ไป traces movement away/onward, and รับ supplies the purpose. English to receive does not make รับ an infinitive; Thai has no infinitival ending here.
Minimal contrast: ไป before versus after the main action
Position changes the event path.
คุณอรไปซื้อขนมให้ทีมค่ะ
khun on pai sue khanom hai thim kha
Khun On went to buy snacks for the team. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; journey precedes the buying purpose)
คุณอรซื้อขนมไปฝากทีมค่ะ
khun on sue khanom pai fak thim kha
Khun On bought snacks to take to the team. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; buying precedes outward transfer and giving)
The first sentence centers a trip undertaken to buy. The second centers a purchase followed by carrying and presenting the snacks elsewhere. The same lexical item ไป makes a different contribution because its position relates it to a different event stage.
Handling and shared objects
In handling chains, an object stated after the first predicate remains understood with later predicates.
ช่วยหยิบแก้วสองใบมาล้างให้หน่อยค่ะ
chuai yip kaeo song bai ma lang hai noi kha
Please pick up those two glasses, bring them over, and wash them. (ordinary-polite request, female speaker; glasses shared across handling and washing)
ผมเอากล่องไปวางไว้หน้าห้องแล้วครับ
phom ao klong pai wang wai na hong laeo khrap
I've taken the box and left it in front of the room. (ordinary-polite update, male speaker; shared box across outward movement and placement)
Repeating แก้ว before ล้าง or กล่อง before วาง would be heavy unless contrast demanded it. The omission is licensed because the same object continues through a conventional handling event. It does not prove that Thai verbs never have objects.
An intervening person can instead acquire a later role in causative or permissive constructions, so shared-subject assumptions must sometimes stop. The shared-participant guide gives those argument-linking patterns.
Simultaneous posture and activity
Posture predicates normally precede the activity they frame, even though the situations overlap rather than occur in sequence.
คุณยายนั่งอ่านนิตยสารอยู่ที่ระเบียงค่ะ
khun yai nang an nittayasan yu thi rabiang kha
Grandmother is sitting reading a magazine on the balcony. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; posture and reading simultaneous)
พนักงานยืนคุยโทรศัพท์หน้าร้านค่ะ
phanak ngan yuen khui thorasap na ran kha
An employee is standing talking on the phone in front of the shop. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; standing configures the simultaneous activity)
“Predicate order follows time” is therefore too simple. A better generalization is that order follows the conventional conceptual organization: chronology in a sequence, geometry in a path, and background configuration before focal activity in a posture chain. This genuine complexity must be learned construction by construction.
Action and result
In a resultative sequence, the object of the first predicate commonly becomes the holder of the later property or state.
ลมแรงพัดหน้าต่างเปิดออกค่ะ
lom raeng phat natang poet ok kha
The strong wind blew the window open. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; window is affected object and result holder)
รถชนรั้วเหล็กพังแล้วครับ
rot chon rua lek phang laeo khrap
A vehicle has crashed into the iron fence and knocked it down. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; fence bears the attained result)
The first subject does not bear เปิด or พัง; the intervening noun does. Meaning and plausibility determine that link. Adding English to be before the Thai result predicate would destroy the natural construction.
Aspect and negation reveal scope
A preverbal marker can frame an integrated chain, while an internal negative can deny only a later endpoint.
ตอนนี้คนขับกำลังขับรถไปรับลูกค้าอยู่ครับ
ton ni khon khap kamlang khap rot pai rap lukkha yu khrap
The driver is on the way to pick up the customer now. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; progressive viewpoint over the path–purpose chain)
เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้เดินไปส่งพัสดุครับ
muea chao phom mai dai doen pai song phatsadu khrap
I didn't walk over to send the parcel this morning. (ordinary-polite correction, male speaker; broad negation denies the walking-delivery chain)
คนขับออกไปแล้วแต่ขับไปไม่ถึงสนามบินค่ะ
khon khap ok pai laeo tae khap pai mai thueng sanambin kha
The driver set out but couldn't reach the airport. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; motion occurred, endpoint negated)
กำลัง...อยู่ presents the complex event as unfolding. Initial ไม่ได้ denies the larger event in context. Internal ไม่ถึง preserves driving but denies arrival at the endpoint. English auxiliary position cannot predict these scopes; Thai marker placement does.
Serial construction, compound, complement, or coordination?
Adjacent predicates are not automatically one class.
| Structure | Diagnostic | Model |
|---|---|---|
| productive serialization | compositional event relation and shared participant | เดินไปซื้อยา |
| lexical compound | stored meaning not computed as separate stages | เข้าใจ “understand” |
| predicate complement | first predicate selects a proposition/action | อยากกลับบ้าน “want to go home” |
| coordination | separate assertions, often linker or new subject | ผมกลับแล้วนิดก็ออกไป |
ผมเข้าใจปัญหาแล้วครับ
phom khao chai panha laeo khrap
I understand the problem now. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; เข้าใจ is a lexical compound, not ‘enter then use’)
ผมปิดร้านแล้ว คุณนิดก็กลับบ้านครับ
phom pit ran laeo khun nit ko klap ban khrap
I closed the shop, and then Khun Nit went home. (ordinary-polite narration, male speaker; separate subjects and coordinated assertions)
Copular and existential predicates also require their own lexical frames. ไปเป็นครูที่ต่างจังหวัด can present movement into a teaching role, but an arbitrary sequence of เป็น, อยู่, and มี is not licensed just because English uses several forms of be. Predicate type remains part of the analysis.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers arrange a delivery:
แฟ้มชุดนี้ต้องเอาไปส่งที่ไหนคะ
faem chut ni tong ao pai song thi nai kha
Where does this set of files need to be taken for delivery? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; handling–path–purpose chain)
เอาไปส่งที่ฝ่ายกฎหมายชั้นห้าครับ
ao pai song thi fai kotmai chan ha khrap
Take it to legal on the fifth floor. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; subject and files recoverable)
ให้ฉันถือขึ้นไปวางบนโต๊ะคุณนิดเลยไหมคะ
hai chan thue khuen pai wang bon to khun nit loei mai kha
Would you like me to carry it upstairs and put it straight on Khun Nit's desk? (ordinary-polite offer, female speaker)
ได้ครับ วางเสร็จแล้วช่วยโทรมาบอกด้วย
dai khrap wang set laeo chuai tho ma bok duai
Yes. Once you've put it down, please call and let me know too. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; placement completion followed by a separate request)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting an English infinitive marker
❌ ฉันไปที่จะรับลูกค้าที่สนามบินค่ะ
Incorrect English transfer—ที่จะ is not a general marker corresponding to infinitival ‘to’ in a motion–purpose chain.
✅ ฉันไปรับลูกค้าที่สนามบินค่ะ
chan pai rap lukkha thi sanambin kha
I'm going to pick up the customer at the airport. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker)
2. Reversing manner and path
❌ เด็กกลับวิ่งมาที่บ้านครับ
Incorrect for the neutral meaning ‘run back’; manner normally precedes the return path.
✅ เด็กวิ่งกลับมาที่บ้านครับ
dek wing klap ma thi ban khrap
The child ran back home. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker)
3. Repeating a shared object
❌ ช่วยหยิบจานมาล้างจานด้วยค่ะ
Unnatural in the intended shared-object chain—the plate remains recoverable with ล้าง.
✅ ช่วยหยิบจานสองใบมาล้างด้วยค่ะ
chuai yip chan song bai ma lang duai kha
Please pick up those two plates, bring them over, and wash them too. (ordinary-polite request, female speaker)
4. Repeating aspect after every predicate
❌ เขาเดินแล้วไปแล้วซื้อยาแล้วครับ
Incorrect—แล้ว is not a tense suffix copied after every verb in one chain.
✅ เขาเดินไปซื้อยากลับมาแล้วครับ
khao doen pai sue ya klap ma laeo khrap
He has walked over, bought the medicine, and come back. (ordinary-polite update, male speaker; แล้ว frames the completed sequence)
5. Assigning the result to the wrong participant
❌ รถชนรั้วแล้วรถพังค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘the vehicle knocked the fence down’; the overt second รถ makes the vehicle the one that was damaged.
✅ รถบรรทุกชนรั้วด้านข้างพังค่ะ
rot banthuk chon rua dan khang phang kha
The truck crashed into the side fence and knocked it down. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; fence is the result holder)
Key Takeaways
Thai serial predicates build one complex event through conventional ordering: manner before path, motion before purpose, posture before simultaneous activity, and action before result. Track the participant associated with every predicate, place aspect and negation according to scope, and distinguish productive chains from compounds, complements, and coordinated clauses.
