Aspect Placement in Multi-Verb Chains

Thai aspect markers do not attach to each verb in a multi-verb chain as tense endings. Instead, their position helps define an event domain: the whole journey-purpose chain may be underway, a later result may already hold, or a final action may have become possible. The lexical predicates themselves never change form.

There is no single rigid template that accepts every marker. กำลัง, จะ, เคย, and ยัง typically occur before the predicate domain they frame; อยู่, แล้ว, and postverbal ได้ follow the predicate or endpoint relevant to their meaning. Lexical homophones—especially อยู่ “be located” and ได้ “receive”—must still be analyzed as verbs when they retain their own arguments.

Whole-chain viewpoint

Preverbal กำลัง can present an integrated complex event as unfolding. Postverbal อยู่ can close that ongoing domain. In a motion-purpose chain, the speaker need not claim that every later purpose action has begun; the chain is viewed from within its projected course.

พนักงานกำลังถือเอกสารเดินไปส่งที่ห้องประชุมอยู่ค่ะ

phanak ngan kamlang thue ekkasan doen pai song thi hong prachum yu kha

The employee is carrying the documents over to deliver them to the meeting room. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; ongoing viewpoint over the chain)

ช่างกำลังยกเครื่องซักผ้าขึ้นรถอยู่ครับ

chang kamlang yok khrueang sak pha khuen rot yu khrap

The workers are lifting the washing machine onto the vehicle. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; lifting and upward path are in progress)

The second sentence does not conjugate ยก or ขึ้น. The frame กำลัง...อยู่ presents the lifting-path complex as ongoing. Either edge can sometimes be omitted when the context is clear: ช่างยก...อยู่ and ช่างกำลังยก... are also possible, with discourse and style influencing the choice.

พรุ่งนี้ผมจะขับรถไปรับแขกที่สนามบินครับ

phrung ni phom cha khap rot pai rap khaek thi sanambin khrap

Tomorrow I'll drive to pick up the guest at the airport. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker; prospective จะ frames the full journey-purpose chain)

English translates จะ with will here, but the Thai form is a prospective/modal marker, not future conjugation. A sufficiently explicit schedule can license omission: พรุ่งนี้ผมขับรถไปรับแขก is also possible as a settled plan.

💡
First bracket the predicates that form one coherent event. Then place viewpoint around that bracket: กำลัง [ถือเอกสาร–เดิน–ไป–ส่ง] อยู่. Do not mechanically give every verb its own marker.

Completion after a result or final stage

Clause-final แล้ว often presents the relevant chain as attained or newly true. Its interpretation depends on the event structure supplied by the predicates.

แม่เอาอาหารใส่กล่องเก็บไว้ในตู้เย็นแล้วค่ะ

mae ao ahan sai klong kep wai nai tu yen laeo kha

Mum has put the food into containers and stored it in the refrigerator. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; the handling-storage chain has reached its endpoint)

เจ้าหน้าที่เปิดประตูพาคนดูงานเข้าไปแล้วครับ

chaonathi poet pratu pha khon du ngan khao pai laeo khrap

The officer has opened the door and taken the visitors inside. (formal-neutral report, male speaker; the entrance sequence is attained)

ฉันกินข้าวอิ่มแล้วค่ะ

chan kin khao im laeo kha

I've eaten and am full now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; อิ่ม supplies the actor-oriented result and แล้ว presents it as attained)

In the last example, แล้ว does not itself mean “successfully” or “full.” That endpoint comes from the result predicate อิ่ม. Compare ฉันกินข้าวแล้ว, which reports the eating as completed or currently relevant but does not guarantee that the eater became full.

The resultative-chain guide explains how an object of the first action becomes the holder of a later state.

Placement can distinguish prior completion from current activity

An internal แล้ว often closes one stage before a following clause or activity. This differs from a single final แล้ว that takes scope over the integrated sequence.

เขาไปถึงร้านแล้วกำลังเลือกของอยู่ครับ

khao pai thueng ran laeo kamlang lueak khong yu khrap

He has reached the shop and is now choosing things. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; arrival completed before a separately viewed activity)

เขากำลังเดินไปเลือกของที่ร้านอยู่ครับ

khao kamlang doen pai lueak khong thi ran yu khrap

He is walking to the shop to choose some things. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; journey-purpose chain is underway)

The first sentence has two aspectual domains: arrival is complete, and choosing is ongoing. The second presents the motion-purpose chain from within; choosing may still be only intended. This is why merely counting verbs cannot determine the structure.

ได้ before and after the chain

Position is especially revealing with ได้. Preverbal ได้ can present an obtained opportunity or realized occurrence. Postverbal ได้ presents ability, permission, practical possibility, or successful result.

เมื่อวานผมได้ขับรถพาลูกค้าไปดูโรงงานครับ

muea wan phom dai khap rot pha luk kha pai du rong ngan khrap

Yesterday I got the opportunity to drive the customer to see the factory. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; preverbal ได้ presents realized opportunity)

ผมขับรถพาลูกค้าไปดูโรงงานได้ครับ

phom khap rot pha luk kha pai du rong ngan dai khrap

I can drive the customer to see the factory. (ordinary polite offer, male speaker; postverbal ได้ presents capacity)

หลังลองสองรอบ ทีมยกฉากขึ้นเวทีได้แล้วค่ะ

lang long song rop thim yok chak khuen wethi dai laeo kha

After two attempts, the team has managed to lift the set onto the stage. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; success has now been attained)

The sequence ได้แล้ว can mean “can now/has now managed to,” depending on predicate and context. It is not two tense endings. See verb-plus-ได้ success for the success/capacity continuum.

Stative and lexical restrictions

Markers are not freely stackable. กำลัง favors dynamic situations with an internal course. A lexical state or compound may combine with อยู่ or แล้ว under its own meaning, but mechanically adding กำลัง...อยู่ can be unnatural.

ตอนนี้ฉันเข้าใจเหตุผลแล้วค่ะ

ton ni chan khao chai hetphon laeo kha

I understand the reason now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; change into a state, not an ongoing serial action)

แฟ้มสำคัญยังอยู่ในตู้เหล็กครับ

faem samkhan yang yu nai tu lek khrap

The important folder is still in the metal cabinet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; อยู่ is the lexical locative predicate)

In the second example, อยู่ is not a postverbal ongoing marker: it supplies the location predicate and takes ในตู้เหล็ก as its complement. The broader aspect-order guide treats lexical and grammaticalized uses together.

💡
Do not identify an aspect marker by spelling alone. Ask whether the form contributes viewpoint or retains a lexical frame: อยู่ในตู้ means “be in the cabinet,” while กำลังค้นแฟ้มอยู่ uses postpredicate อยู่ to sustain an ongoing view.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two staff members are preparing equipment for an event:

ตอนนี้ทีมกำลังเอาอุปกรณ์ขึ้นไปติดตั้งอยู่หรือเปล่าคะ

ton ni thim kamlang ao upakon khuen pai tittang yu rue plao kha

Is the team taking the equipment upstairs to install it now? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ครับ ยกขึ้นไปเกือบหมดแล้ว เหลือโต๊ะตัวใหญ่ครับ

khrap yok khuen pai kueap mot laeo luea to tua yai khrap

Yes. They've taken almost everything up; only the large table remains. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; shared subject and equipment are omitted)

โต๊ะตัวนั้นยกเข้าลิฟต์ได้ไหมคะ

to tua nan yok khao lif dai mai kha

Can that table be lifted into the lift? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; postverbal ได้ asks about practical possibility)

ลองแล้วครับ แต่ยกเข้าไม่ได้ ต้องใช้บันได

long laeo khrap tae yok khao mai dai tong chai bandai

We tried, but we couldn't get it into the lift; we'll have to use the stairs. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; internal failure after an attempted action)

Common Mistakes

1. Repeating กำลัง before every verb

❌ พนักงานกำลังถือเอกสารกำลังเดินกำลังไปส่งอยู่ค่ะ

Incorrect—one ongoing frame can scope over the integrated chain; repeating กำลัง breaks its structure.

✅ พนักงานกำลังถือเอกสารเดินไปส่งชั้นบนอยู่ค่ะ

phanak ngan kamlang thue ekkasan doen pai song chan bon yu kha

The employee is carrying documents upstairs to deliver them. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

2. Placing กำลัง after the activity verb

❌ เขานั่งกำลังอ่านรายงานอยู่ครับ

Incorrect neutral order—กำลัง precedes the predicate domain; it cannot be inserted after the posture predicate this way.

✅ เขากำลังนั่งอ่านรายงานการประชุมอยู่ครับ

khao kamlang nang an raingan kan prachum yu khrap

He is sitting reading the meeting report. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

3. Treating แล้ว as a suffix on every stage

❌ แม่เอาแล้วอาหารใส่แล้วกล่องเก็บแล้วค่ะ

Incorrect—แล้ว does not conjugate each predicate and cannot separate a verb from its object.

✅ แม่เอาอาหารใส่กล่องเก็บในตู้เย็นแล้วค่ะ

mae ao ahan sai klong kep nai tu yen laeo kha

Mum has put the food in containers and stored it in the refrigerator. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Using preverbal ได้ for intended ability

❌ ผมได้ขับรถพาทีมไปประชุมครับ

Wrong for the intended present ability; preverbal ได้ presents a realized or obtained event.

✅ ผมขับรถพาทีมไปประชุมได้ครับ

phom khap rot pha thim pai prachum dai khrap

I can drive the team to the meeting. (ordinary polite offer, male speaker)

5. Forcing ongoing aspect onto a state

❌ ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังเข้าใจเหตุผลอยู่ค่ะ

Unnatural for the intended settled state ‘I understand now’; the progressive frame wrongly forces an unfolding activity reading.

✅ ตอนนี้ฉันเข้าใจเหตุผลของเขาแล้วค่ะ

ton ni chan khao chai hetphon khong khao laeo kha

Now I understand his reason. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Aspect placement defines a viewpoint domain; it does not conjugate each verb.
  • กำลัง...อยู่ can frame an unfolding chain, while final แล้ว presents a relevant endpoint as attained.
  • Internal แล้ว can close one stage before a new ongoing domain.
  • Preverbal and postverbal ได้ belong to different constructions, and lexical อยู่/ได้ must be identified from their argument frames.
