Thai can place several viewpoint expressions around one unchanged predicate: ยังไม่เคยใช้, กำลังตรวจอยู่, ยังเปิดไม่ได้, จองไว้แล้ว. These are not cells from a single tense paradigm. Each sequence is licensed because its parts form coherent semantic layers, and changing their order changes scope or produces an unnatural combination.
A positional map is useful—some expressions characteristically precede a predicate while others follow it—but there is no universal template into which every marker can be inserted. Several forms are also lexical verbs in other constructions. Advanced analysis must identify the predicate, its arguments, and the contribution of each surrounding form.
A map of zones, not a fill-every-slot formula
The following table exposes productive positions. Blank cells are not invitations to combine all rows; they show how attested constructions bracket or extend a predicate.
| Outer/pre-predicate material | Inner viewpoint | Predicate phrase | Post-predicate material | Final layer | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ยังไม่ | เคย | ใช้ระบบนี้ | — | — | no experience up to reference point |
| — | กำลัง | ตรวจเอกสาร | อยู่ | — | internal ongoing viewpoint |
| ยัง | — | เปิดไฟล์ | ไม่ได้ | — | ability/success still unavailable |
| — | เคย | ทำงานแบบนี้ | มา | แล้ว | prior experience viewed retrospectively |
| — | — | จองห้อง | ไว้ | แล้ว | prepared result now established |
| — | กำลังจะ | ออก | — | แล้ว | imminent event newly current |
ฉันยังไม่เคยใช้เครื่องรุ่นนี้ค่ะ
chan yang mai khoei chai khrueang run ni kha
I haven't used this model of machine yet. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; experience denied up to now)
ตอนผมเข้าไป เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังตรวจเอกสารอยู่แล้วครับ
ton phom khao pai chao nathi kamlang truat ekkasan yu laeo khrap
When I went in, the officer was already checking the documents. (ordinary polite past narrative, male speaker; ongoing event already established)
เราเคยจัดงานลักษณะนี้มาแล้วค่ะ
rao khoei chat ngan laksana ni ma laeo kha
We've organized this kind of event before. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; prior experience viewed from now)
The second example is especially instructive. กำลัง...อยู่ frames checking from within, while final แล้ว says that this ongoing situation was already established at the past reference point. It does not mean the checking was complete.
Scope changes when negation moves
Compare ยังไม่ได้เปิด and ยังเปิดไม่ได้. The same written forms appear, but the placement of the opening event relative to ไม่ได้ changes what is denied.
ฝ่ายกฎหมายยังไม่ได้เปิดไฟล์สัญญานี้ค่ะ
fai kotmai yang mai dai poet fai sanya ni kha
The legal department hasn't opened this contract file yet. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; event has not occurred)
ไฟล์สัญญานี้ยังเปิดไม่ได้ครับ เพราะไฟล์เสีย
fai sanya ni yang poet mai dai khrap phro fai sia
This contract file still cannot be opened because it is corrupted. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; ability/success unavailable)
พรุ่งนี้ลูกค้าจะเข้าดูเอกสารได้ค่ะ
phrung ni luk kha cha khao du ekkasan dai kha
Tomorrow the customer will be able to access and view the documents. (ordinary polite workplace prediction, female speaker; prospective ability)
In ไม่ได้เปิด, the negative-realization unit precedes the event. In เปิดไม่ได้, the event description precedes postverbal ได้ and its negation, yielding inability, impossibility, or unsuccessful performance. จะ...ได้ projects that availability. The difference cannot be recovered from the English word not alone; see verb-chain negation.
Final แล้ว takes scope over different inner structures
แล้ว can follow a bare event, a completed task, a retained result, or an ongoing bracket. What it relates to the reference point is the entire inner structure immediately available in context.
พนักงานส่งสัญญาแล้วค่ะ
phanak ngan song sanya laeo kha
The employee has sent the contract. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; sending attained)
พนักงานตรวจสัญญาเสร็จแล้วครับ
phanak ngan truat sanya set laeo khrap
The employee has finished checking the contract. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; lexical completion attained)
ผมจองห้องประชุมไว้แล้วครับ
phom chong hong prachum wai laeo khrap
I've reserved the meeting room in advance. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; preserved preparation established)
รถรับส่งกำลังจะออกแล้วค่ะ เชิญขึ้นรถได้เลย
rot rap song kamlang cha ok laeo kha choen khuen rot dai loei
The shuttle is about to leave; please board now. (polite service announcement, female voice; imminent threshold newly relevant)
In ตรวจ...เสร็จแล้ว, เสร็จ supplies task completion and แล้ว supplies attained relevance. In จอง...ไว้แล้ว, ไว้ supplies retained preparation. In กำลังจะออกแล้ว, กำลังจะ supplies a pre-event threshold and แล้ว makes that threshold current. The outer form does not erase the inner lexical or aspectual distinctions.
Semantic compatibility blocks mechanical stacking
เคย selects prior experience; กำลัง...อยู่ selects an internal phase at one reference time. A bare sequence such as เคยกำลังอ่านอยู่ usually tries to impose both perspectives without supplying a structure that relates them. If the intended meaning is “was reading then,” use a past anchor with กำลัง...อยู่. If the intended meaning is experience, use เคย with the event.
ตอนนั้นฉันกำลังคุยกับลูกค้าอยู่ค่ะ
ton nan chan kamlang khui kap luk kha yu kha
At that time I was talking with a customer. (ordinary polite past report, female speaker; internal viewpoint at a past anchor)
ฉันเคยคุยกับลูกค้ารายนี้มาก่อนค่ะ
chan khoei khui kap luk kha rai ni ma kon kha
I've spoken with this customer before. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; prior experience)
Likewise, stable predicates resist progressive marking unless coerced into change or activity. กำลังรู้ is not licensed just because an English translation contains be. Multiple markers do not repair an incompatible predicate.
Lexical homophony can change the parse
อยู่, ได้, มา, and แล้ว have lexical or discourse uses as well as aspectual ones. A string of familiar forms may therefore have fewer aspect markers than it appears to.
ผมอยู่เชียงใหม่มาหกปีแล้วครับ
phom yu chiang mai ma hok pi laeo khrap
I've lived in Chiang Mai for six years. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; lexical locative อยู่ plus continuative มา and final แล้ว)
ฉันได้รับเอกสารแล้วค่ะ
chan dai rap ekkasan laeo kha
I've received the documents. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; ได้รับ is an established lexical compound, followed by แล้ว)
แล้วเราก็กลับไปตรวจอีกครั้งครับ
laeo rao ko klap pai truat ik khrang khrap
Then we went back to check once more. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker; clause-initial แล้ว links discourse)
The first อยู่ heads a location/residence predicate; the second ได้ belongs with รับ; the third แล้ว stands at the start of a clause. Position is evidence, not an automatic part-of-speech label.
Optionality does not erase order
Context can make one layer unnecessary. Visible activity may permit ตรวจเอกสารอยู่ or even a bare ตรวจเอกสาร as an answer. A clearly established earlier experience may not need มาแล้ว after เคย. But if a marker is present, its position and scope remain meaningful.
กำลังตรวจหน้าสุดท้ายอยู่ครับ
kamlang truat na sutthai yu khrap
I'm checking the last page now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; subject omitted as recoverable)
Removing กำลัง or อยู่ can still leave a contextually current reply, but reversing them cannot: อยู่ตรวจ...กำลัง is not an alternative arrangement.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
เอกสารชุดนี้ตรวจเสร็จแล้วหรือยังคะ
ekkasan chut ni truat set laeo rue yang kha
Have you finished checking this set of documents yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังไม่เสร็จครับ กำลังตรวจหน้าสุดท้ายอยู่
yang mai set khrap kamlang truat na sutthai yu
Not yet. I'm checking the last page. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แล้วไฟล์แนบส่งให้ลูกค้าได้หรือยังคะ
laeo fai naep song hai luk kha dai rue yang kha
And can the attachment be sent to the customer yet? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)
ยังส่งไม่ได้ครับ ต้องรอหัวหน้าอนุมัติก่อน
yang song mai dai khrap tong ro hua na anumat kon
It still can't be sent; we need to wait for the supervisor's approval. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Stacking incompatible viewpoints
❌ เมื่อวานฉันเคยกำลังอ่านรายงานอยู่ค่ะ
Incoherent for the intended ‘I was reading the report yesterday’—เคย adds experiential scope that the simple past scene does not need.
✅ เมื่อวานตอนบ่ายฉันกำลังอ่านรายงานอยู่ค่ะ
muea wan ton bai chan kamlang an raingan yu kha
Yesterday afternoon I was reading the report. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
2. Separating ยังไม่ from experiential เคย
❌ ผมยังเคยไม่ใช้ระบบนี้ครับ
Incorrect for ‘have never used it yet’—the productive negative-experiential order is ยังไม่เคย.
✅ ผมยังไม่เคยใช้ระบบรุ่นนี้ครับ
phom yang mai khoei chai rabop run ni khrap
I haven't used this version of the system yet. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
3. Confusing nonoccurrence with inability
❌ ฉันยังส่งรายงานไม่ได้ค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘I haven't sent it yet’ if sending is possible; this says I still cannot send it.
✅ ฉันยังไม่ได้ส่งรายงานค่ะ กำลังตรวจตัวเลข
chan yang mai dai song raingan kha kamlang truat tua lek
I haven't sent the report yet; I'm checking the figures. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
4. Reading an established progressive as completion
❌ เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังตรวจเอกสารอยู่แล้วครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘the officer has finished checking’; this means checking is already under way.
✅ เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจเอกสารเสร็จแล้วครับ
chao nathi truat ekkasan set laeo khrap
The officer has finished checking the documents. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
5. Moving plain negation by English auxiliary order
❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะส่งไม่เอกสารครับ
Incorrect—ไม่ cannot split ส่ง from its object in a simple prospective denial.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไม่ส่งเอกสารชุดนี้ครับ
phrung ni phom cha mai song ekkasan chut ni khrap
Tomorrow I won't send this set of documents. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Thai multi-marker sequences are compositional layers, not inflected tense forms or a single fillable template.
- Build from the predicate outward and test the semantic compatibility of every layer.
- Negation position changes scope: ยังไม่ได้เปิด contrasts with ยังเปิดไม่ได้.
- Final แล้ว relates different inner structures to a reference point without erasing their distinctions.
- Lexical อยู่, ได้รับ, directional/continuative มา, and discourse-linking แล้ว must be parsed before they are labeled aspectual.
