In a one-clause sentence, แล้ว often sits conveniently at the end: ส่งรายงานแล้ว “have sent the report.” In a multi-clause sentence, its position becomes more revealing. It may close an embedded proposition, mark a matrix reporting event as attained, establish a prerequisite in a temporal clause, or join two events as แล้วก็ “and then.”
The difficult part is not memorizing another meaning of แล้ว. It is deciding which proposition lies in its scope. Standard Central Thai uses clause boundaries, information structure, pauses, and recoverable context to guide that decision; the marker does not automatically make every event to its left “past.”
Four productive scope positions
| Frame | Substitution | Natural result | Primary scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| [matrix event + แล้ว] + ว่า + P | แจ้ง + แล้ว + ว่าระบบใช้ได้ | แจ้งแล้วว่าระบบใช้ได้ | the act of notifying |
| matrix verb + ว่า + [P + แล้ว] | แจ้ง + ว่า + ระบบใช้ได้แล้ว | แจ้งว่าระบบใช้ได้แล้ว | the embedded proposition |
| พอ/ถ้า + [P + แล้ว] + Q | ตรวจเสร็จ + แล้ว + ส่ง | พอตรวจเสร็จแล้วก็ส่ง | the prerequisite P |
| P + แล้วก็ + Q | ตรวจยอด + แล้วก็ + ส่งใบแจ้งหนี้ | ตรวจยอดแล้วก็ส่งใบแจ้งหนี้ | sequence from P to Q |
| [P + อยู่ + แล้ว] + Q | กำลังประชุม + อยู่ + แล้ว | กำลังประชุมอยู่แล้วตอนที่โทรมา | an already-established ongoing P |
เขาแจ้งแล้วว่าระบบกลับมาใช้ได้ครับ
khao chaeng laeo wa rabop klap ma chai dai khrap
He has already announced that the system is usable again. (formal-polite workplace report, male speaker; แล้ว scopes over แจ้ง)
เขาแจ้งว่าระบบกลับมาใช้ได้แล้วค่ะ
khao chaeng wa rabop klap ma chai dai laeo kha
He announced that the system can now be used again. (formal-polite workplace report, female speaker; แล้ว scopes inside the reported proposition)
The two sentences differ only in placement, but they answer different questions. The first settles whether the announcement has been made. The second presents renewed system availability as the new state that was announced.
Matrix scope versus embedded scope
With speech and cognition predicates such as บอก, แจ้ง (formal to neutral), ยืนยัน, and คิดว่า, placement relative to ว่า is especially informative. บอกแล้วว่า P presents the telling as attained. บอกว่า P แล้ว normally places แล้ว inside P when P itself is structurally complete.
ผู้จัดการยืนยันแล้วว่าราคานี้ใช้ได้ครับ
phu chatkan yuenyan laeo wa rakha ni chai dai khrap
The manager has confirmed that this price is acceptable. (formal-polite workplace report, male speaker; confirmation attained)
ผู้จัดการยืนยันว่าราคานี้ใช้ได้แล้วค่ะ
phu chatkan yuenyan wa rakha ni chai dai laeo kha
The manager confirms that this price is acceptable now. (formal-polite workplace report, female speaker; new validity inside the complement)
ลูกค้าบอกว่าได้รับพัสดุแล้วครับ
luk kha bok wa dai rap phatsadu laeo khrap
The customer said that they had received the parcel. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; receipt attained within the reported content)
This is scope, not an English sequence-of-tenses rule. Thai does not change ได้รับ into a pluperfect form. English chooses had received because the receipt precedes the past saying; Thai lets the reporting context and embedded แล้ว establish that relation.
There can be genuine ambiguity when a short complement ends immediately before the whole utterance ends. Thai speakers often resolve it by moving แล้ว closer to the intended predicate, repeating an object, adding มาแล้ว, เสร็จแล้ว, or อยู่แล้ว, or using a pause. Written Thai can also place a space at a major clause boundary. There is no honest mechanical rule that punctuation alone always decides scope.
Temporal and conditional subordinate clauses
In พอ P แล้ว Q, เมื่อ P แล้ว Q, and some ถ้า P แล้ว Q sequences, แล้ว commonly closes P and presents it as the stage that must be attained before Q becomes relevant. Q may lie in the past, present, or future.
พอฝ่ายบัญชีโอนเงินแล้ว เราจึงจัดส่งสินค้าค่ะ
pho fai banchi on ngoen laeo rao chueng chat song sinkha kha
Once accounting had transferred the money, we dispatched the merchandise. (formal-polite procedural report, female speaker; prerequisite completed before the main event)
ถ้าตรวจเอกสารครบแล้ว ก็กดยืนยันได้เลยครับ
tha truat ekkasan khrop laeo ko kot yuenyan dai loei khrap
If you have checked all the documents, you can press confirm. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker; completion belongs to the conditional clause)
พรุ่งนี้พอประชุมจบแล้ว ผมจะโทรกลับครับ
phrung ni pho prachum chop laeo phom cha tho klap khrap
Tomorrow, once the meeting is over, I'll call back. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; future prerequisite)
The future example shows why “แล้ว equals past” fails. The meeting endpoint is anterior to the projected phone call, not anterior to speaking time. Reference time comes from the larger sentence.
When the endpoint is already explicit, แล้ว may be omitted: พอประชุมจบ ผมจะโทรกลับ is natural. Adding แล้ว makes the attained-stage relation more explicit. Optionality does not erase order: if แล้ว appears, it belongs after the complete subordinate event, not before its object or result.
Sequential แล้วก็ is a linker, not a tense ending
Between coordinated events, แล้วก็ presents Q as the next step after P. The active time frame normally comes from an adverb or the discourse and extends across both events.
เมื่อวานฉันตรวจยอดแล้วก็ส่งใบแจ้งหนี้ค่ะ
muea wan chan truat yot laeo ko song bai chaeng ni kha
Yesterday I checked the total and then sent the invoice. (ordinary polite workplace narrative, female speaker; แล้วก็ links two events inside a past frame)
ถึงบ้านแล้วก็โทรมานะครับ
thueng ban laeo ko tho ma na khrap
Call me when you get home. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; future sequence inferred from the directive)
The second sentence contains no overt จะ, yet the arrival and call are prospective. แล้วก็ orders them iconically. Do not treat ถึงบ้านแล้ว as an independently past clause simply because it precedes the next verb.
In rapid speech, ก็ may be absent: ปิดร้านแล้วกลับบ้าน can mean “close the shop and then go home.” If a completion update rather than a sequence is intended, speakers often finish the intonation unit—ปิดร้านแล้วครับ—before adding another sentence.
Wider scope over an ongoing situation
The frame กำลัง P อยู่แล้ว does not mean that P is both incomplete and completed. กำลัง...อยู่ builds an ongoing proposition; outer แล้ว says that this ongoing situation was already established at the relevant point.
ตอนที่ลูกค้าโทรมา เรากำลังตรวจสัญญาอยู่แล้วค่ะ
ton thi luk kha tho ma rao kamlang truat sanya yu laeo kha
When the customer called, we were already reviewing the contract. (ordinary polite workplace narrative, female speaker; แล้ว scopes over an established progressive situation)
เขาบอกว่าช่างกำลังซ่อมเครื่องอยู่แล้วครับ
khao bok wa chang kamlang som khrueang yu laeo khrap
He said that the technician was already repairing the machine. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; embedded ongoing proposition in the scope of แล้ว)
Compare ช่างซ่อมเครื่องแล้ว “the technician has repaired the machine.” Removing กำลัง...อยู่ changes the unit that แล้ว takes as its input. The aspect-order page develops the ordering of these viewpoint frames.
Negation must stay with the intended clause
ไม่ได้บอกว่า P denies or corrects the matrix telling event. บอกว่าไม่ P แล้ว reports a changed negative proposition. English auxiliary order gives no safe template.
หัวหน้ายังไม่ได้บอกว่าเลื่อนประชุมครับ
hua na yang mai dai bok wa luean prachum khrap
The supervisor still hasn't said that the meeting is postponed. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; matrix speech event not yet attained)
หัวหน้าบอกว่าไม่ต้องรอแล้วค่ะ
hua na bok wa mai tong ro laeo kha
The supervisor said that we no longer need to wait. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; changed necessity inside the complement)
Moving ไม่ or แล้ว changes what is denied or updated. Thai packages these contrasts through adjacency and clause structure, not through conjugated auxiliary chains.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ลูกค้าแจ้งมาหรือยังคะว่าเขาตรวจสัญญาแล้ว
luk kha chaeng ma rue yang kha wa khao truat sanya laeo
Has the customer told us yet that they have reviewed the contract? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker; matrix report is questioned while แล้ว stays inside the complement)
แจ้งแล้วครับ เขาขอแก้สองจุด
chaeng laeo khrap khao kho kae song chut
Yes, they have. They asked for two changes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; matrix verb and subject recovered from context)
พอเราแก้เสร็จแล้ว ส่งกลับได้เลยนะคะ
pho rao kae set laeo song klap dai loei na kha
Once we've finished the changes, we can send it straight back. (ordinary polite workplace response, female speaker; future prerequisite)
ได้ครับ ผมจะแก้แล้วส่งให้คุณตรวจก่อน
dai khrap phom cha kae laeo song hai khun truat kon
All right. I'll make the changes and then send it to you to check first. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; sequential แล้ว between projected actions)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting แล้ว inside the embedded event before its object
❌ เขาบอกว่าลูกค้าส่งแล้วเอกสารค่ะ
Incorrect neutral order—เอกสาร belongs inside the embedded event before แล้ว.
✅ เขาบอกว่าลูกค้าส่งเอกสารแล้วค่ะ
khao bok wa luk kha song ekkasan laeo kha
He said that the customer had sent the documents. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Confusing matrix and embedded scope
❌ เขาแจ้งว่าห้องพร้อมแล้วครับ
Wrong selection for the intended focus on the completed announcement; this naturally puts แล้ว with ห้องพร้อม.
✅ เขาแจ้งแล้วว่าห้องพร้อมครับ
khao chaeng laeo wa hong phrom khrap
He has already announced that the room is ready. (formal-polite report, male speaker; matrix scope)
3. Calculating a progressive stack from English labels
❌ ผมกำลังตรวจแล้วอยู่ครับ
Incorrect ordering; the progressive frame is กำลัง...อยู่, and an outer แล้ว follows the complete frame.
✅ ตอนหัวหน้าเข้ามา ผมกำลังตรวจบัญชีอยู่แล้วครับ
ton hua na khao ma phom kamlang truat banchi yu laeo khrap
When the supervisor came in, I was already checking the accounts. (ordinary polite narrative, male speaker)
4. Reading a future prerequisite as past tense
❌ พรุ่งนี้พอแล้วส่งรายงาน ฉันจะกลับบ้านค่ะ
Incorrect marker placement—แล้ว follows the whole prerequisite event.
✅ พรุ่งนี้พอส่งรายงานแล้ว ฉันจะกลับบ้านค่ะ
phrung ni pho song raingan laeo chan cha klap ban kha
Tomorrow, once I've sent the report, I'll go home. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; future sequence)
Key Takeaways
- V แล้วว่า P and V ว่า P แล้ว place attainment in different clauses.
- In พอ/ถ้า P แล้ว Q, แล้ว commonly closes the prerequisite P; the larger sentence supplies past, present, or future reference.
- แล้วก็ orders coordinated events, while กำลัง P อยู่แล้ว presents an ongoing P as already established.
- Marker omission is possible when event shape and discourse make the relation clear, but an overt marker still obeys clause boundaries.
- Some compact strings are genuinely ambiguous; speakers clarify them through placement, repetition, lexical endpoints, pauses, and context.
