Why Focus Particles Must Touch Their Associate

Thai focus particles tell the listener which alternatives are being restricted, added, identified, or presented as surprising. Their position supplies the bracket: a pre-focus particle stands at the left edge of its associate, while a post-focus particle stands at the right edge. Moving the particle can change the size of the focused constituent and therefore change the meaning.

“Touch” here means syntactic adjacency, not inserting or removing Thai written spaces. A particle can associate with a multiword noun phrase or an entire predicate. It must sit at the appropriate edge of that whole unit, even though Thai orthography does not put spaces between every word.

วันนี้ฉันรับแค่เอกสารฉบับจริงค่ะ

wan ni chan rap khae ekkasan chabap ching kha

Today I'm accepting only the original document. (ordinary polite object restriction, female speaker)

บริเวณนี้สำหรับผู้โดยสารเท่านั้นครับ

boriwen ni samrap phu doisan thao nan khrap

This area is for passengers only. (formal-polite categorical restriction, male voice)

คุณรตาเองจะชี้แจงเรื่องนี้ค่ะ

khun rata eng cha chichaeng rueang ni kha

Khun Rata herself will explain this matter. (ordinary polite exact-agency focus, female speaker)

แค่ precedes the restricted object, เท่านั้น follows the restricted group, and เอง follows the focused person. The particle is not free to copy the position of English only or herself.

💡
Draw an invisible bracket around the alternatives: แค่ [เอกสารฉบับจริง], [ผู้โดยสาร] เท่านั้น, [คุณรตา] เอง. Put the particle at the bracket edge required by that particle.

Adjacency identifies constituent size

A multiword associate remains one constituent. In แค่รายงานฉบับที่แก้เมื่อวาน, แค่ sits directly before the full noun phrase, not before every word inside it. A post-focus form waits until that phrase ends.

ผมอ่านแค่รายงานฉบับที่แก้เมื่อวานครับ

phom an khae raingan chabap thi kae muea wan khrap

I read only the report that was revised yesterday. (ordinary polite restriction of a complex object, male speaker)

กรุณาส่งเอกสารที่มีลายเซ็นเท่านั้นค่ะ

karuna song ekkasan thi mi lai sen thao nan kha

Please send only documents that bear a signature. (formal-polite requirement, female voice)

In the first, the excluded alternatives are other reports or documents. In the second, เท่านั้น follows the whole restricted phrase เอกสารที่มีลายเซ็น. Its distance from the head noun does not violate adjacency, because the relative clause belongs inside the same noun phrase.

This is a genuine analytical difficulty: Thai writing does not visibly mark constituent boundaries. Learners must use noun-phrase structure, predicate structure, and meaning rather than counting graphic spaces.

Minimal contrast: object versus event

Moving แค่ across the verb changes what is minimized.

เขาตรวจแค่ยอดรวมครับ

khao truat khae yot ruam khrap

He checked only the total. (ordinary polite object focus, male speaker; not the individual entries)

เขาแค่ตรวจยอดรวมครับ ยังไม่ได้อนุมัติ

khao khae truat yot ruam khrap yang mai dai anumat

He merely checked the total; he has not approved it. (ordinary polite event focus, male speaker; checking contrasts with a stronger action)

In ตรวจ [แค่ยอดรวม], the object alternatives are total, taxes, and individual entries. In แค่ [ตรวจยอดรวม], the event alternatives include checking, revising, and approving. The surface difference is small because adjacency does the scope work.

The same principle applies to amounts and times:

ทีมนี้มีสมาชิกใหม่แค่สองคนค่ะ

thim ni mi samachik mai khae song khon kha

This team has only two new members. (ordinary polite quantity restriction, female speaker)

ผมเข้าออฟฟิศเฉพาะวันอังคารครับ

phom khao offit chapho wan angkhan khrap

I go into the office only on Tuesdays. (ordinary polite time restriction, male speaker)

The classifiers and time expressions are part of the focus. English article or plural morphology does not determine Thai placement.

Whole-predicate and whole-proposition associates

A pre-focus particle can stand before a predicate or proposition, not only a noun. The associate may therefore stretch to the next clause boundary.

แค่โทรไปยืนยันก็พอค่ะ ไม่ต้องเดินทางมา

khae tho pai yuenyan ko pho kha mai tong doen thang ma

Just call to confirm; there's no need to come in person. (ordinary polite sufficient-action statement, female speaker)

แม้แต่หัวหน้าสาขาก็ยังเปิดระบบนี้ไม่ได้ครับ

mae tae hua na sakha ko yang poet rabop ni mai dai khrap

Even the branch manager still cannot access this system. (ordinary polite scalar observation, male speaker)

In แค่ [โทรไปยืนยัน] ก็พอ, a complete action is presented as sufficient. In the split frame แม้แต่ [หัวหน้าสาขา] ก็ยัง..., แม้แต่ touches the unexpected participant and ก็ยัง introduces the proposition that holds even for that participant. The pieces do not form one movable English-style auxiliary.

Topic particles and focus particles have different jobs

A topic establishes what the utterance is about; focus selects among live alternatives. The two can coexist.

เรื่องเวลา ผมว่างแค่ช่วงเช้าครับ

rueang wela phom wang khae chuang chao khrap

As for timing, I'm free only in the morning. (ordinary polite topic plus time focus, male speaker)

เรื่องเวลา frames the domain. แค่ช่วงเช้า selects one interval within that domain. Putting แค่ before the topic—แค่เรื่องเวลา...—would instead minimize the entire issue: “only the matter of timing.”

Likewise, คุณนิดเองก็... contains a post-focus เอง attached to the person and a following ก็ that links the focused topic to its comment. Particle order reflects nested scope, not decorative stacking.

คุณนิดเองก็เพิ่งทราบข่าวเมื่อเช้าค่ะ

khun nit eng ko phoeng sap khao muea chao kha

Khun Nit herself only just learned the news this morning. (ordinary polite contrastive-topic report, female speaker)

The general focus-placement guide compares these particle families across predicate types.

A focused associate cannot be zero

Thai can omit given participants, but a contrastive associate must be pronounced. A bare เอง cannot answer “who?” because the listener needs the person whose alternatives it excludes.

ใครจะเป็นคนนำเสนอคะ — ผู้อำนวยการเองค่ะ

khrai cha pen khon nam sanoe kha phu amnuai kan eng kha

Who will present? — The director personally. (ordinary polite exchange, female speakers; focused participant overt)

ต้องแนบอะไรเพิ่มครับ — แนบสำเนาบัตรมาด้วยค่ะ

tong naep arai phoem khrap naep samna bat ma duai kha

What else must be attached? — Please attach a copy of the card too. (ordinary polite exchange; additive object overt)

The background event and participants may be zero, but ผู้อำนวยการ and สำเนาบัตร remain overt because they supply the alternatives. Focus and zero anaphora therefore pull in opposite directions: focus requires expression; topical continuity favors omission.

💡
If a particle seems stranded after omission, restore its associate. Thai can omit given arguments, but it cannot ask a listener to recover the very contrast the focus particle is supposed to identify.

Negation sets a different bracket

Compare ไม่ได้แค่ [ตรวจ] “did not merely check” with แค่ [ไม่ได้ตรวจ] “merely failed to check.” The order determines whether negation rejects an exclusive description or belongs inside the minimized event.

เขาไม่ได้แค่แปลเอกสาร แต่ตรวจข้อมูลให้ด้วยค่ะ

khao mai dai khae plae ekkasan tae truat khomun hai duai kha

He didn't merely translate the document; he checked the information too. (ordinary polite corrective report, female speaker)

เขาแค่ไม่ได้เข้าประชุมครับ งานส่วนอื่นเขาทำครบแล้ว

khao khae mai dai khao prachum khrap ngan suan uen khao tham khrop laeo

He merely missed the meeting; he completed all the other work. (ordinary polite mitigation, male speaker)

English auxiliary order is not a reliable guide. Bracket the Thai predicate and then interpret which operator—negation or restriction—has wider scope. The negation-and-focus page covers further combinations.

Register and prosody

แค่ is especially conversational (informal/ordinary); เพียง, เฉพาะ, and เท่านั้น are common in careful and formal restrictions (formal-neutral); เอง and additive ด้วย occur across everyday speech and careful prose. A formal form does not repair wrong attachment.

Prosodic prominence reinforces the associate and can disambiguate a wide phrase, but it does not license arbitrary particle placement. RTGS does not show focus stress. In writing, choose a construction whose scope remains clear without requiring the reader to hear your intended contour.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two coworkers decide what to submit.

วันนี้ต้องส่งเอกสารทั้งหมดไหมคะ

wan ni tong song ekkasan thangmot mai kha

Do we have to submit all the documents today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ส่งเฉพาะแบบฟอร์มที่เซ็นแล้วครับ

song chapho baep fom thi sen laeo khrap

Submit only the signed form. (ordinary polite restriction, male speaker)

แล้วใบรับรองล่ะคะ

laeo bai raprong la kha

And what about the certificate? (ordinary polite topic question, female speaker)

แนบใบรับรองมาด้วยครับ แต่ไม่ต้องส่งสำเนาบัตร

naep bai raprong ma duai khrap tae mai tong song samna bat

Attach the certificate too, but there's no need to submit an ID copy. (ordinary polite additive instruction, male speaker)

Each focus form touches the newly selected item; recoverable background material remains omitted.

Common Mistakes

1. Restricting the event instead of the intended object

❌ ผมแค่อ่านสัญญาครับ

Wrong for intended ‘the contract was the only document I read’—this position minimizes the reading event.

✅ ผมอ่านแค่สัญญาฉบับล่าสุดครับ

phom an khae sanya chabap lasut khrap

I read only the latest contract. (ordinary polite object restriction, male speaker)

2. Putting post-focus เอง before its associate

❌ เองคุณอรจะคุยกับลูกค้าค่ะ

Incorrect order—เอง follows the person whose personal responsibility is contrasted.

✅ คุณอรเองจะคุยกับลูกค้าค่ะ

khun on eng cha khui kap luk kha kha

Khun On herself will speak with the customer. (ordinary polite subject-agency focus, female speaker)

3. Inserting เท่านั้น inside the focused noun phrase

❌ รับผู้สมัครเท่านั้นที่มีประสบการณ์ค่ะ

Misattached for intended ‘only applicants with experience’; เท่านั้น interrupts the phrase that defines the eligible set.

✅ รับผู้สมัครที่มีประสบการณ์เท่านั้นค่ะ

rap phu samak thi mi prasopkan thao nan kha

Only applicants with experience are accepted. (formal-polite eligibility rule, female voice)

4. Leaving a focus particle without an overt associate

❌ ใครอนุมัติครับ — เองครับ

Incorrect—the post-focus particle cannot identify which person is contrasted when its associate is zero.

✅ ใครอนุมัติครับ — รองผู้อำนวยการเองค่ะ

khrai anumat khrap rong phu amnuai kan eng kha

Who approved it? — The deputy director personally. (ordinary polite exchange; male questioner and female respondent)

Key Takeaways

Focus particles sit at the edge of their associates: pre-focus forms before the bracket and post-focus forms after it. The associate may be a word, a complex noun phrase, a predicate, or a proposition. Moving a particle changes scope; omitting its focused associate destroys the contrast. Use constituent structure—not English word order or Thai graphic spacing—to find the correct edge.
