Focus Placement and Particle Adjacency | Thai Grammar

Focus is the part of an utterance that answers the live question or contrasts with relevant alternatives. Thai can signal it through context and prosody, but focus particles make the alternative set explicit. Their placement is structural: แค่กาแฟ restricts the object “coffee,” while แค่ดื่มกาแฟ restricts the larger event “drink coffee.”

The key is adjacency. Pre-focus particles sit immediately before their focus; post-focus particles sit immediately after it. This is more reliable than copying the position of English only, even, also, or self. Individual particles add their own meanings, but the syntax page asks one common question: what exact constituent is next to the particle?

Focus can be supplied by the question

Thai does not require a focus particle in every answer. A wh-question establishes an open slot, and the corresponding answer naturally receives narrow prosodic prominence.

ใครส่งไฟล์มาเมื่อเช้าคะ

khrai song fai ma muea chao kha

Who sent the file this morning? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; subject is the open focus slot)

คุณนิดส่งมาค่ะ

khun nit song ma kha

Khun Nit sent it. (ordinary-polite answer, female speaker; คุณนิด is focused by context and the object is omitted)

คุณนิดส่งไฟล์ไหนมาครับ

khun nit song fai nai ma khrap

Which file did Khun Nit send? (ordinary-polite question, male speaker; object focus remains in situ)

ส่งไฟล์สรุปยอดขายมาค่ะ

song fai sarup yot khai ma kha

She sent the sales-summary file. (ordinary-polite answer, female speaker; focused object stated, subject omitted)

Thai does not move ใคร or ไฟล์ไหน to the front merely because English does. It also need not repeat คุณนิด in the final answer. The focus is new; recoverable participants can remain zero.

First reconstruct the current question. The phrase that fills its open slot is focused even without a particle; pronounce only the participants needed to distinguish the answer.

Productive adjacency patterns

Focus particles associate with a noun phrase, predicate phrase, amount, time, or whole proposition. Brackets below show the relevant constituent, not extra Thai punctuation.

แค่ is common in conversation (informal-neutral); เพียง and เท่านั้น are common in careful rules and writing (formal-neutral), though neither is confined to formal contexts. เอง and ด้วย are standard across ordinary speech. Minimal contrast: object focus versus event focus

Moving แค่ changes the size of its focus constituent.

เขาตรวจแค่รายงานครับ

khao truat khae raingan khrap

He checked only the report. (ordinary-polite object restriction, male speaker; not the other documents)

เขาแค่ตรวจรายงานครับ ไม่ได้แก้ไข

khao khae truat raingan khrap mai dai kaekhai

He only checked the report; he didn't revise it. (ordinary-polite event restriction, male speaker; checking contrasts with stronger actions)

The words after ตรวจ are identical, but the alternatives differ. In the first, reports contrast with other objects. In the second, checking the report contrasts with revising, approving, or sending it. English only can occupy several surface positions without making scope this transparent; Thai adjacency makes the bracketing overt.

Post-focus particles work in the other direction:

รับเอกสารฉบับจริงเท่านั้นค่ะ

rap ekkasan chabap ching thao nan kha

Only original documents are accepted. (formal-polite restriction, female voice; เท่านั้น follows the restricted noun phrase)

ผมเองจะนำเอกสารไปส่งครับ

phom eng cha nam ekkasan pai song khrap

I myself will take the documents over. (ordinary-polite contrastive commitment, male speaker; เอง follows the focused agent)

Focus across predicate types

The adjacency principle applies beyond transitive verbs. A particle can restrict a property predicate, a classifying complement, an existential pivot, or a topic-comment subpart.

ห้องนี้แค่แคบค่ะ ไม่ได้อึดอัด

hong ni khae khaep kha mai dai uet at

This room is merely narrow; it isn't uncomfortable. (ordinary-polite property contrast, female speaker; แค่ scopes over แคบ)

เขาเป็นเพียงผู้ช่วยโครงการครับ

khao pen phiang phuchuai khrongkan khrap

He is only a project assistant. (formal-polite status restriction, male speaker; potentially dismissive despite formal wording)

ในห้องมีแค่โต๊ะพับตัวเดียวค่ะ

nai hong mi khae to phap tua diao kha

There is only one folding table in the room. (ordinary-polite existential restriction, female speaker; available entity focused)

เรื่องเวลา ผมว่างแค่เช้าวันศุกร์ครับ

rueang wela phom wang khae chao wan suk khrap

As for timing, I'm free only Friday morning. (ordinary-polite topic–comment answer, male speaker; time alternative restricted)

English uses adjectives, copulas, existential there, and preposed topics across these translations. Thai keeps the same focus logic: the particle attaches to the property, class noun, available entity, or time that competes with alternatives.

Subject focus may need special packaging

Plain prosody can focus a subject in an answer: คุณนิดส่งค่ะ answers “Who sent it?” Strong exclusive subject focus, however, is often clearer in an existential or identifying construction rather than by dropping แค่ into an arbitrary subject position.

มีพนักงานใหม่เพียงคนเดียวที่พูดภาษาญี่ปุ่นได้ครับ

mi phanak ngan mai phiang khon diao thi phut phasa yipun dai khrap

Only one new employee can speak Japanese. (formal-polite subject-focus construction, male speaker; exclusive participant introduced with มี)

Here มี presents the restricted participant and ที่ connects that person to the following ability. The person after มี is the understood subject of พูด...ได้, not a possessive object. See existential subject focus.

Negation changes the focus relation

Negation and exclusives are not interchangeable, and their order changes scope.

เขาไม่ได้แค่ตรวจตัวเลข แต่แก้ตารางใหม่ทั้งหมดค่ะ

khao mai dai khae truat tua lek tae kae tarang mai thangmot kha

He didn't merely check the figures; he redid the entire table. (ordinary-polite corrective report, female speaker; negation rejects an only-claim)

เขาแค่ไม่ได้มาตรงเวลาครับ งานส่วนอื่นเสร็จครบ

khao khae mai dai ma trong wela khrap ngan suan uen set khrop

He merely failed to arrive on time; every other part of the work was completed. (ordinary-polite mitigation, male speaker; แค่ scopes over the negative event)

In ไม่ได้แค่..., the speaker denies that the smaller description is exhaustive and normally adds something stronger. In แค่ไม่ได้..., the negative event itself is presented as the limited problem. Thai does not imitate English auxiliary order; ไม่/ไม่ได้ stays before the predicate whose realization is denied. The negation-and-focus page treats further combinations.

Additive and scalar focus

With ด้วย, the focused item or event joins an already relevant alternative. With แม้แต่, the speaker selects an unexpectedly low-probability member of a scale.

ช่วยส่งตารางค่าใช้จ่ายมาด้วยนะคะ

chuai song tarang kha chai chai ma duai na kha

Please send the expense table too. (ordinary-polite additive request, female speaker; table added to earlier requested material)

แม้แต่หัวหน้าก็ยังจำรหัสใหม่ไม่ได้ครับ

mae tae hua na ko yang cham rahat mai mai dai khrap

Even the supervisor still can't remember the new code. (ordinary-polite scalar observation, male speaker; unexpectedly knowledgeable person focused)

The split frame แม้แต่ X ก็ยัง... keeps แม้แต่ next to X and places ก็ยัง with the proposition. It is not a license to scatter particle pieces anywhere. Likewise, ด้วย at the end can associate with a larger predicate, so context must make the added alternative clear.

Say the alternatives aloud: “coffee rather than tea,” “checking rather than revising,” or “Nit rather than the others.” Then place the focus particle directly on the side required by that particle.

Register, prosody, and ordinary-polite dialogue

Focus is not rudeness, but an exclusive can rank people, efforts, or options. เขาเป็นแค่ผู้ช่วย may belittle the assistant. Formal เพียง does not remove that inference. Prosodic stress sharpens a contrast; RTGS records neither lexical tone nor sentence-level prominence.

Two coworkers decide which version of a document to send:

ต้องส่งทั้งรายงานกับตารางไหมคะ

tong song thang raingan kap tarang mai kha

Do we need to send both the report and the table? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

ส่งแค่รายงานฉบับแก้ไขครับ

song khae raingan chabap kaekhai khrap

Common Mistakes

1. Moving แค่ away from its object focus

❌ เขาแค่ตรวจรายงานครับ

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘the report is the only document he checked’; this placement naturally restricts the larger checking event.

✅ เขาตรวจแค่รายงานสรุปครับ

khao truat khae raingan sarup khrap

He checked only the summary report. (ordinary-polite object restriction, male speaker)

2. Putting post-focus เอง before its participant

❌ เองคุณนิดจะตรวจสัญญาค่ะ

Incorrect—เอง follows the participant or phrase it identifies as personally responsible.

✅ คุณนิดเองจะตรวจสัญญาค่ะ

khun nit eng cha truat sanya kha

Khun Nit herself will check the contract. (ordinary-polite contrastive commitment, female speaker)

3. Copying English subject-focus order mechanically

❌ แค่คุณนิดทำงานนี้ค่ะ

Marked and unclear for the intended categorical ‘only Nit can do this job’; use an identifying or existential focus frame.

✅ มีคุณนิดคนเดียวที่ทำงานนี้ได้ค่ะ

mi khun nit khon diao thi tham ngan ni dai kha

Only Khun Nit can do this job. (ordinary-polite exclusive subject focus, female speaker)

4. Repeating a recoverable focused subject

❌ ใครโทรมาคะ คุณนิดค่ะ คุณนิดโทรมาค่ะ

Needlessly repetitive in the intended short exchange; the answer already supplies the focused caller.

✅ ใครโทรมาคะ คุณนิดค่ะ

khrai tho ma kha khun nit kha

Who called? — Khun Nit. (ordinary-polite exchange, female speakers; focused fragment answer)
