Existential มี in Subject-Focus Constructions

Existential มี can introduce not just an entity at a place, but the participant whose role in a following event is the sentence’s new information: มีลูกค้าสองรายขอเปลี่ยนวันส่งของ “Two customers have asked to change the delivery date.” The customers follow มี, yet they are understood as the actors of ขอ. This is often called an existential or presentational subject-focus construction.

The term subject focus describes the information structure, not a special case ending. Thai first asserts that a relevant participant exists in the current domain, then predicates an action, state, or property of that participant. The construction is useful when the answer to “who did it?” or “what happened?” is new, indefinite, quantified, or contrastively restricted.

Present the participant, then say what it does

The central frame is setting + มี + participant + predicate. A time, place, or larger topic may establish the domain. The participant after มี supplies the understood subject of the following predicate.

plain established topicidentifiable NP + predicateลูกค้าคนนั้นโทรมาแล้ว

เมื่อเช้ามีลูกค้าสองรายขอเลื่อนวันส่งของค่ะ

muea chao mi luk kha song rai kho luean wan song khong kha

This morning, two customers asked to postpone their delivery dates. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; new actors introduced)

หลังประชุมมีพนักงานหลายคนถามเรื่องวันหยุดครับ

lang prachum mi phanak ngan lai khon tham rueang wan yut khrap

After the meeting, several employees asked about the holiday. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; focused questioners after มี)

ในทีมมีสองคนพูดภาษาจีนได้ค่ะ

nai thim mi song khon phut phasa chin dai kha

Two people on the team can speak Chinese. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; team as domain and speakers as focused participants)

The noun after มี is not the object of “have” in these readings. ลูกค้าสองราย performs ขอ, พนักงานหลายคน performs ถาม, and สองคน is the understood subject of พูด...ได้. English may use existential there or ordinary subject order; Thai packages the participant as new information after มี.

💡
After มี + noun phrase + predicate, test the roles: if that noun performs or experiences the following predicate, มี is presenting a participant, not assigning it as the object of possession.

Contrast with an established topic

Plain subject–predicate order is natural when the participant is already identifiable or is the continuing topic. Existential focus is useful when the participant itself is being introduced, counted, questioned, or contrasted.

ลูกค้าสองรายนั้นขอเลื่อนวันส่งของอีกครั้งค่ะ

luk kha song rai nan kho luean wan song khong ik khrang kha

Those two customers asked to postpone their delivery dates again. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; established customers as topic)

มีลูกค้ารายหนึ่งที่ยังไม่ได้รับสินค้าเลยครับ

mi luk kha rai nueng thi yang mai dai rap sinkha loei khrap

There is one customer who still hasn't received the product at all. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; one customer singled out)

The demonstrative นั้น marks an identifiable group in the first example. In the second, มี...รายหนึ่ง introduces one relevant customer, and ที่ clearly links the descriptive clause. ที่ is especially useful when the following material is long or when the speaker wants an explicit noun-modifying boundary, but short presentational event sequences also occur without it.

This construction extends the basic presentative use of มี. The advanced point is that the introduced referent is also a participant in the following predication.

Questions and negative existentials

มีใคร...ไหม asks whether any person satisfies the following description. ไม่มีใคร... denies that any person does. English often starts with did anyone or nobody; Thai retains existential มี/ไม่มี and leaves the invariant predicate later in the clause.

มีใครเห็นแฟ้มสีน้ำเงินบ้างไหมคะ

mi khrai hen faem si nam ngoen bang mai kha

Has anyone seen the blue folder? (polite question, female speaker; open participant focus)

ไม่มีใครจำรหัสห้องเก็บของได้ครับ

mai mi khrai cham rahat hong kep khong dai khrap

Nobody can remember the storeroom code. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; absence of any successful experiencer)

มีอะไรทำให้กำหนดการเปลี่ยนหรือคะ

mi arai tham hai kamnotkan plian rue kha

Was there something that caused the schedule to change? (polite surprised question, female speaker; causal participant queried)

In ไม่มีใครจำ...ได้, the negative existential scopes over possible rememberers: no person meets the description. Compare มีคนจำรหัสไม่ได้, which asserts that some people exist who cannot remember it. These are logically different.

💡
Keep the negative with the layer you intend: ไม่มีใครตอบ means nobody answered; มีคนไม่ตอบ means some people did not answer. Moving ไม่ across มี changes which set is asserted to exist.

Restrictive and exhaustive focus

Forms such as คนเดียว, เพียง...เดียว, and เท่านั้น can narrow the presented set. The following ที่ clause states the property that makes that participant relevant.

มีคุณนิดคนเดียวที่เปิดตู้เอกสารนี้ได้ค่ะ

mi khun nit khon diao thi poet tu ekkasan ni dai kha

Khun Nit is the only person who can open this filing cabinet. (ordinary polite workplace statement, female speaker; exhaustive participant focus)

ในรายงานมีเพียงหัวข้อเดียวที่ต้องแก้ไขครับ

nai raingan mi phiang hua kho diao thi tong kaekhai khrap

There is only one section in the report that needs revision. (formal-neutral report, male speaker; restricted nonhuman focus)

This is close in translation to an English cleft, but the Thai grammar remains existential: มี introduces a restricted participant or item. An equational คือ construction instead identifies one expression with another. Do not assume every English it is X who... must use คือ.

Aspect, time, and event shape

The predicate following the focused participant remains uninflected. Time and viewpoint appear in their normal positions: a setting may precede มี, กำลัง may precede an ongoing following event, and แล้ว may mark current relevance.

ตอนนี้มีช่างสองคนกำลังตรวจระบบอยู่ครับ

ton ni mi chang song khon kamlang truat rabop yu khrap

Two technicians are checking the system right now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; introduced actors in an ongoing event)

มีผู้สมัครสามคนส่งเอกสารครบแล้วค่ะ

mi phu samak sam khon song ekkasan khrop laeo kha

Three applicants have now submitted all the required documents. (formal-neutral update, female speaker; completion marked after the event)

กำลัง does not modify มี here; it frames the technicians’ checking. แล้ว follows the entire submission event. Thai has not conjugated ตรวจ or ส่ง, and มี does not correspond to an English tense auxiliary.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two colleagues are checking who can cover a reception desk.

บ่ายนี้มีใครอยู่รับแขกแทนคุณอรได้บ้างคะ

bai ni mi khrai yu rap khaek thaen khun on dai bang kha

Is there anyone who can stay and receive visitors for Khun On this afternoon? (polite question, female speaker)

มีผมกับคุณเดชครับ แต่คุณเดชติดประชุมตอนสามโมง

mi phom kap khun det khrap tae khun det tit prachum ton sam mong

There's me and Khun Det, but Khun Det has a meeting at three. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; available people introduced)

งั้นมีคุณคนเดียวที่อยู่ได้ถึงเย็นใช่ไหมคะ

ngan mi khun khon diao thi yu dai thueng yen chai mai kha

So you're the only person who can stay until the evening, right? (polite confirmation, female speaker; exhaustive focus)

ใช่ครับ เดี๋ยวผมแจ้งหัวหน้าเอง

chai khrap diao phom chaeng hua na eng

Yes. I'll let the supervisor know myself. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; focused participant becomes continuing topic)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating the focused participant as a possessive object

❌ บริษัทมีของพนักงานสามคนลาออกค่ะ

Incorrect English-influenced packaging; ของ wrongly turns the participant into a possessor phrase.

✅ เดือนนี้บริษัทมีพนักงานสามคนลาออกค่ะ

duean ni borisat mi phanak ngan sam khon la ok kha

Three employees are leaving the company this month. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; employees introduced as actors)

2. Moving the numeral before the noun

❌ เมื่อเช้ามีสามลูกค้าโทรมาครับ

Incorrect counting order—Thai uses noun + number + classifier.

✅ เมื่อเช้ามีลูกค้าสามรายโทรมาครับ

muea chao mi luk kha sam rai tho ma khrap

Three customers called this morning. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

3. Confusing nobody with somebody who did not

❌ มีใครไม่ตอบคำถามค่ะ

Wrong for ‘nobody answered’; this order does not place the whole participant set under existential negation.

✅ ไม่มีใครตอบคำถามนี้ค่ะ

mai mi khrai top khamtham ni kha

Nobody answered this question. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Doubling มี while copying English dummy there

❌ มันมีมีคนรอพบผู้จัดการครับ

Incorrect—the doubled มี is ungrammatical. A single optional มัน can frame the situation colloquially, but neutral existential focus needs only มี.

✅ มีคนรอพบผู้จัดการอยู่ครับ

mi khon ro phop phu chatkan yu khrap

There is someone waiting to see the manager. (ordinary polite information, male speaker)

5. Using อยู่ to introduce an event participant

❌ เมื่อวานอยู่ช่างคนหนึ่งมาซ่อมประตูค่ะ

Incorrect presentational order—อยู่ locates an identifiable entity; it does not introduce the new actor this way.

✅ เมื่อวานมีช่างคนหนึ่งมาซ่อมประตูค่ะ

muea wan mi chang khon nueng ma som pratu kha

Yesterday a technician came to repair the door. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • มี + participant + predicate presents a new or focused participant and predicates an event or property of it.
  • Plain participant-first order is better for an established continuing topic.
  • ไม่มีใคร V and มีคนไม่ V differ in scope: no participant exists versus some participants fail to act.
  • Quantifiers and restrictive expressions make the focused set explicit; time and aspect still occur around unchanged predicates.
