Existential and Locative Word Order

Thai uses predicate choice together with word order to distinguish two questions that English often answers with be. Place + มี + entity presents what exists at a location; entity + อยู่ + place tells where an identifiable entity is. The noun does not acquire an article, and neither predicate conjugates.

This is a strong information-structure pattern, not an absolute claim that every noun after มี is indefinite or every noun before อยู่ has been mentioned before. Context can make a referent identifiable in many ways. The dependable insight is what the sentence asks the listener to update: the contents of a place, or the whereabouts of an entity.

Place first: what is there?

To introduce the contents of a scene, put the location first and follow it with มี + noun phrase.

ในห้องด้านซ้ายมีโต๊ะประชุมตัวใหญ่ค่ะ

nai hong dan sai mi to prachum tua yai kha

There is a large meeting table in the room on the left. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; place-first existential)

ตรงหัวมุมมีร้านขายยาเปิดตลอดคืนครับ

trong hua mum mi ran khai ya poet talot khuen khrap

There is a pharmacy on the corner that stays open all night. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; a new landmark is introduced)

หลังประตูมีร่มพับอยู่สองคันค่ะ

lang pratu mi rom phap yu song khan kha

There are two folding umbrellas behind the door. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; introduced objects with classifier คัน)

The noun phrase follows มี because it is the new content added to the scene. In the third example, postnominal อยู่ helps present the umbrellas as situated there, but มี remains the existential predicate.

💡
When answering “What is at this place?”, build the location as a scene-setting topic and use มี to introduce its contents.

Entity first: where is it?

When the listener can identify the person or object, place that entity first and use อยู่ + location.

โต๊ะที่เราจองไว้อยู่ในห้องด้านซ้ายค่ะ

to thi rao chong wai yu nai hong dan sai kha

The table we reserved is in the room on the left. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; identifiable table located)

ร้านขายยาที่ใกล้ที่สุดอยู่ตรงหัวมุมครับ

ran khai ya thi klai thi sut yu trong hua mum khrap

The nearest pharmacy is on the corner. (ordinary polite direction, male speaker; definite description with อยู่)

ร่มของคุณอยู่หลังประตูค่ะ

rom khong khun yu lang pratu kha

Your umbrella is behind the door. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; ownership makes the umbrella identifiable)

Articles do not create the distinction. Thai uses descriptions, demonstratives, possessors, prior mention, and shared context to identify the noun. ร่มของคุณ is identifiable because the owner is specified.

Compare the same vocabulary:

บนชั้นมีหนังสือท่องเที่ยวเล่มหนึ่งครับ

bon chan mi nangsue thongthiao lem nueng khrap

There is a travel book on the shelf. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; book introduced)

หนังสือท่องเที่ยวเล่มนั้นอยู่บนชั้นบนครับ

nangsue thongthiao lem nan yu bon chan bon khrap

That travel book is on the upper shelf. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; known book located)

The first sentence makes a book available for later reference. The second uses เล่มนั้น to select it and reports its position.

The dedicated อยู่ location guide develops residence, negative location, and postpredicate continuative อยู่.

Three common presentational arrangements

Thai can present an entity with the location before มี, or begin with มี when the setting is already understood. A following action or อยู่ + place can complete the scene.

Discourse purposeProductive orderModel
inventory of a placeplace + มี + entityในครัวมีตู้เย็น
present entity, then locateมี + entity + อยู่ + placeมีคนรออยู่หน้าห้อง
present entity with activityplace + มี + entity + actionหน้าตึกมีรถจอด
locate known entityentity + อยู่ + placeรถคันนั้นอยู่หน้าตึก
ask what is presentplace + มี + อะไร/ใครในกล่องมีอะไร
ask whereaboutsentity + อยู่ + ที่ไหนกล่องอยู่ที่ไหน

มีเจ้าหน้าที่รออยู่ตรงโต๊ะด้านหน้าค่ะ

mi chaonathi ro yu trong to dan na kha

There is a staff member waiting at the front desk. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; entity presented before its activity and location)

หน้าศูนย์บริการมีรถรับส่งจอดอยู่ครับ

na sun borikan mi rot rap song chot yu khrap

There is a shuttle parked in front of the service center. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; location-first scene with activity and continuative อยู่)

These longer sentences contain several layers. Existential มี introduces the participant; รอ or จอด describes it; final อยู่ maintains the state; a locative phrase identifies the setting. Do not translate each layer as a separate form of English be.

Questions expose the contrast

The requested information usually determines the order.

ในตู้เก็บของมีอะไรบ้างคะ

nai tu kep khong mi arai bang kha

What things are in the storage cabinet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; asks for the cabinet's contents)

อุปกรณ์สำรองอยู่ที่ไหนครับ

upakon samrong yu thi nai khrap

Where is the spare equipment? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; asks for a known item's location)

วันนี้มีใครอยู่ที่สำนักงานบ้างคะ

wan ni mi khrai yu thi samnakngan bang kha

Who is at the office today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; asks which people are present)

In the last example, มีใคร asks whether/which human referents are present, while อยู่ที่สำนักงาน locates them inside the introduced situation. This is a common combination, not a contradiction between มี and อยู่.

Negating absence and negative location

Order also separates ไม่มี from ไม่อยู่. The first says that the scene contains no relevant entity; the second says an identifiable entity is not at the stated place.

บริเวณนี้ไม่มีจุดบริการน้ำดื่มค่ะ

boriwen ni mai mi chut borikan nam duem kha

There is no drinking-water station in this area. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; local absence)

จุดบริการน้ำดื่มไม่อยู่บริเวณนี้ครับ ต้องเดินไปอีกอาคาร

chut borikan nam duem mai yu boriwen ni khrap tong doen pai ik akhan

The drinking-water station isn't in this area; you need to walk to the other building. (ordinary polite direction, male speaker; known facility located elsewhere)

The second presupposes that a relevant drinking-water station exists and corrects its assumed location. The first makes no such commitment. The same contrast appears with possession: ผมไม่มีรถ “I do not have a car” differs from รถผมไม่อยู่บ้าน “my car is not at home.”

💡
To choose between negative forms, ask whether you deny the entity's existence in the domain (ไม่มี) or only its presence at one location (ไม่อยู่).

Location as a topic outside the core clause

A place can be moved to the left as a discourse topic even when the core clause locates an established entity. A pause or topic particle often makes the structure clear.

ส่วนห้องชั้นสาม เครื่องถ่ายเอกสารอยู่ข้างหน้าต่างค่ะ

suan hong chan sam khrueang thai ekkasan yu khang natang kha

As for the room on the third floor, the photocopier is beside the window. (formal-neutral contrastive topic, female speaker; known machine still precedes อยู่)

This does not overturn entity + อยู่ + place. ส่วนห้องชั้นสาม sets a larger topic; inside the comment, เครื่องถ่ายเอกสาร is the entity and ข้างหน้าต่าง its location.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two coworkers are looking for supplies:

ในห้องเก็บของมีกระดาษขนาดนี้ไหมคะ

nai hong kep khong mi kradat khanat ni mai kha

Is there paper of this size in the storeroom? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; availability at a place)

มีครับ อยู่บนชั้นข้างประตู

mi khrap yu bon chan khang pratu

Yes. It is on the shelf beside the door. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; paper introduced, then located with omitted subject)

แล้วกรรไกรอยู่ตรงไหนคะ

laeo kankrai yu trong nai kha

And where are the scissors? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; identifiable tool)

ในลิ้นชักโต๊ะมีอยู่สองเล่มครับ

nai linchak to mi yu song lem khrap

There are two in the desk drawer. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; scissors omitted as recoverable, quantity introduced with classifier เล่ม)

Common Mistakes

1. Using อยู่ after a place to introduce an entity

❌ ในห้องประชุมอยู่ผู้สมัครสามคนค่ะ

Incorrect for introducing three applicants; use existential มี.

✅ ในห้องประชุมมีผู้สมัครรออยู่สามคนค่ะ

nai hong prachum mi phu samak ro yu sam khon kha

There are three applicants waiting in the meeting room. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)

2. Using มี to locate a definite object

❌ โทรศัพท์ของผมมีข้างคอมพิวเตอร์ครับ

Incorrect for locating my identifiable phone; use อยู่.

✅ โทรศัพท์ของผมอยู่ข้างคอมพิวเตอร์ครับ

thorasap khong phom yu khang khomphiotoe khrap

My phone is beside the computer. (ordinary polite information, male speaker)

3. Copying English existential order

❌ มีบนโต๊ะใบเสร็จหนึ่งใบค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—the place frames the existential before มี, or follows อยู่ after the entity.

✅ บนโต๊ะมีใบเสร็จใหม่หนึ่งใบค่ะ

bon to mi bai set mai nueng bai kha

There is one new receipt on the table. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)

4. Treating ไม่มี and ไม่อยู่ as synonyms

❌ กุญแจห้องนี้ไม่มีในกล่องครับ

Incorrect for saying that a known key is not in the box; ไม่มี denies existence or possession.

✅ กุญแจห้องนี้ไม่อยู่ในกล่องครับ

kunchae hong ni mai yu nai klong khrap

The key to this room isn't in the box. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)

5. Adding an English article before the entity

❌ หน้าสถานีมีหนึ่งร้านกาแฟค่ะ

Incorrect—หนึ่ง is a numeral, not an indefinite article before a noun.

✅ หน้าสถานีมีร้านกาแฟเล็ก ๆ หนึ่งร้านค่ะ

na sathani mi ran kafae lek lek nueng ran kha

There is one small coffee shop in front of the station. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • place + มี + entity presents what a scene contains.
  • entity + อยู่ + place locates an identifiable person or thing.
  • มี + entity + action/อยู่ + place can introduce and then situate a referent in one clause.
  • ไม่มี denies existence in a domain; ไม่อยู่ denies presence at a particular location.
