Source, Path, Goal, and Location Order

Thai normally describes a journey in the order that a traveler experiences it: ออกจากต้นทาง → ผ่านเส้นทาง → ไปถึงจุดหมาย. In รถออกจากเชียงใหม่ ผ่านลำปาง แล้วไปถึงกรุงเทพฯ ตอนเย็น, the vehicle leaves Chiang Mai, passes through Lampang, and reaches Bangkok in that physical sequence.

This source–path–goal tendency interacts with serial motion predicates such as เดิน, เข้า, ออก, ไป, มา, and ถึง. Static location uses a different frame, usually identifiable entity + อยู่ + place, while existential presentation often puts a place before มี. English prepositions alone cannot predict these Thai predicate and information-structure choices.

The canonical motion corridor

SlotProductive materialQuestion answered
figureคนขับ / รถตู้ / พัสดุwhat moves?
manner or motionเดิน / วิ่ง / ขับ / ออกhow or whether does it move?
sourceจาก + placewhere from?
pathผ่าน + place / ทาง + routethrough or along where?
direction/viewpointไป / มา / เข้า / ออก / ขึ้น / ลงwhich directional contour?
goalถึง + place / ไป + place / เข้าไปใน + placewhere to?
event locationที่ + place / บริเวณ + placewhere does the event occur?

Not every clause contains every slot. A speaker states the distinctions that matter and omits a source, route, or goal already supplied by the situation.

รถรับส่งออกจากโรงแรม ผ่านตลาด แล้วไปถึงสนามบินก่อนเจ็ดโมงครับ

rot rap song ok chak rongraem phan talat laeo pai thueng sanambin kon chet mong khrap

The shuttle leaves the hotel, passes through the market, and reaches the airport before seven. (ordinary-polite route description, male speaker; source → path → goal)

นักปั่นขี่จักรยานจากสวนสาธารณะ เลียบคลอง ไปจนถึงสะพานค่ะ

nak pan khi chakkayan chak suan satharana liap khlong pai chon thueng saphan kha

The cyclist rides from the public park, along the canal, all the way to the bridge. (formal-neutral route description, female speaker)

The commas in translation do not correspond to English-style prepositional freedom. Thai predicates and relators map a conceptual path, and the order reflects its successive regions. The iconic-order guide explains why event order is a strong default without being an absolute ban on discourse fronting.

💡
Trace the route with a finger: start at จาก, continue through ผ่าน/เลียบ/ทาง, and finish at ถึง/ไปยัง. If the phrases contradict that physical order, the sentence needs a clear discourse reason.

Manner, direction, and grounds do different work

English often packages path in a preposition attached to one inflected motion verb. Thai can distribute the scene across several invariant predicates.

เด็กวิ่งออกมาจากอาคารแล้วข้ามถนนไปหาพ่อค่ะ

dek wing ok ma chak akhan laeo kham thanon pai ha pho kha

The child ran out of the building, crossed the road, and went to his father. (ordinary-polite motion chain, female speaker; manner, boundary, source, path, and goal)

วิ่ง supplies manner, ออก the outward boundary, มา motion toward the adopted viewpoint, จากอาคาร the source, ข้ามถนน a path event, and ไปหาพ่อ the later goal. There is no Thai equivalent of English infinitival to before หา, and no verb receives tense agreement.

Moving a directional changes the event structure:

คุณนิดเดินไปซื้อยาที่ร้านหน้าปากซอยค่ะ

khun nit doen pai sue ya thi ran na pak soi kha

Khun Nit walked over to buy medicine at the shop by the lane entrance. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; walking path precedes purpose)

คุณนิดซื้อยาแล้วเดินกลับมาที่สำนักงานค่ะ

khun nit sue ya laeo doen klap ma thi samnakngan kha

Khun Nit bought the medicine and then walked back to the office. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; purchase precedes return toward the adopted center)

This minimal contrast is temporal and structural, not stylistic rearrangement. In the first sentence, buying is the purpose of going. In the second, it precedes the return journey.

Goal versus event location

A final place can identify the endpoint of motion or the location of a later activity. Thai often lets real-world knowledge resolve the attachment, but careful language can expose it.

ผมขับรถไปที่ศูนย์บริการเพื่อรับเอกสารครับ

phom khap rot pai thi sun borikan phuea rap ekkasan khrap

I drove to the service center to collect the documents. (formal-polite statement, male speaker; explicit motion goal before purpose)

ผมไปรับเอกสารที่ศูนย์บริการครับ

phom pai rap ekkasan thi sun borikan khrap

I went to collect the documents at the service center. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker; location attaches naturally to collecting, with the same place inferred as trip goal)

The two sentences can describe the same trip, but only the first overtly makes ศูนย์บริการ the complement of directional ไป. In the second, ที่ศูนย์บริการ locates รับเอกสาร, and listeners infer that the destination coincides with that event location.

With several plausible events, repeat or reposition the place rather than relying on a fragile inference: ที่ศูนย์บริการ ผมรับเอกสารแล้วส่งให้ลูกค้า makes the service center a frame for the whole sequence.

Static location and existential presentation

Source, route, and goal presuppose a path. A static property, identity, or existence clause should not be forced into that template.

ตู้เอกสารสีเทาอยู่ข้างประตูห้องประชุมครับ

tu ekkasan si thao yu khang pratu hong prachum khrap

The gray filing cabinet is beside the meeting-room door. (ordinary-polite location of an identifiable entity, male speaker)

จุดนัดพบคือโถงด้านหน้าสถานีค่ะ

chut nat phop khue thong dan na sathani kha

The meeting point is the concourse in front of the station. (formal-polite identification, female speaker)

ระหว่างทางมีจุดพักรถอยู่สองแห่งครับ

rawang thang mi chut phak rot yu song haeng khrap

There are two rest stops along the way. (ordinary-polite existential presentation, male speaker)

ตู้เอกสารสีเทา is known and precedes locative อยู่. จุดนัดพบ is equated with a place by คือ. ระหว่างทาง establishes a spatial domain before มี introduces rest stops. English translates all three with a form of be or there, but Thai selects the predicate according to the informational job.

Property predicates can take a vantage-point frame without becoming motion clauses:

จากระเบียงห้องนี้ วิวแม่น้ำชัดกว่าค่ะ

chak rabiang hong ni wio maenam chat kwa kha

From this room's balcony, the river view is clearer. (ordinary-polite viewpoint topic plus property comment, female speaker)

Here จากระเบียงห้องนี้ identifies the vantage point. Nothing travels from the balcony; จาก relates an assessment to its observational source.

Fronting for topic and contrast

The neutral physical corridor keeps source before path before goal. A speaker can nevertheless front one ground as a topic when comparing routes or destinations.

ส่วนเส้นทางผ่านตัวเมือง เราจะใช้เฉพาะตอนกลางคืนครับ

suan sen thang phan tua mueang rao cha chai chapho ton klang khuen khrap

As for the route through downtown, we will use it only at night. (formal-polite contrastive path topic, male speaker; path understood as object of ใช้)

ที่คลังสินค้า รถคันนี้ไปถึงแล้วค่ะ แต่ยังไม่ได้ขนของลง

thi khlang sinkha rot khan ni pai thueng laeo kha tae yang mai dai khon khong long

At the warehouse, this truck has arrived, but the cargo has not yet been unloaded. (ordinary-polite goal-as-frame update, female speaker)

These are topic–comment structures, not alternative neutral orders inside one motion predicate. The fronted phrase must already be identifiable or contrastive. A new destination normally stays with ไป/ถึง.

💡
Separate physical sequence from discourse sequence. Source–path–goal describes the route; a fronted place tells the listener which route segment or location the next comment is about.

Omission depends on an active route

In directions, visible landmarks and prior turns can license very short chains.

ออกจากลิฟต์แล้วเดินตรงไปครับ

ok chak lip laeo doen trong pai khrap

Exit the lift and walk straight ahead. (ordinary-polite direction, male speaker; addressee and later goal recoverable)

This does not show that Thai motion predicates lack a mover or goal. The addressee is obvious, and the next instruction will identify the destination. In an isolated written notice, omitting the goal may leave the instruction incomplete.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A visitor asks for a route through a hospital building.

จากแผนกต้อนรับไปห้องเอกซเรย์ทางไหนคะ

chak phanaek ton rap pai hong eksare thang nai kha

Which way do I go from reception to the X-ray room? (ordinary-polite source-and-goal question, female visitor)

เดินจากตรงนี้ผ่านร้านกาแฟ แล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายที่ลิฟต์ครับ

doen chak trong ni phan ran kafae laeo liao sai thi lip khrap

Walk from here past the café, then turn left at the lift. (ordinary-polite route instruction, male staff member)

ห้องอยู่ไกลจากลิฟต์ไหมคะ

hong yu klai chak lip mai kha

Is the room far from the lift? (ordinary-polite static-distance question, female visitor)

ไม่ไกลครับ อยู่ถัดจากห้องตรวจเลือด

mai klai khrap yu that chak hong truat lueat

No. It is next to the blood-test room. (ordinary-polite answer, male staff member; known room omitted)

The first two turns construct a motion corridor. The last two switch to static location and omit the already active room.

Common Mistakes

1. Reversing the physical path without a topic reading

❌ รถวิ่งถึงสนามบินผ่านตลาดจากโรงแรมครับ

Incorrect neutral route order—the endpoints and path are presented backward without discourse framing.

✅ รถวิ่งจากโรงแรมผ่านตลาดไปถึงสนามบินครับ

rot wing chak rongraem phan talat pai thueng sanambin khrap

The vehicle travels from the hotel through the market to the airport. (ordinary-polite source–path–goal report, male speaker)

2. Using อยู่ to introduce a new entity after a place

❌ ริมถนนอยู่ร้านซ่อมจักรยานหนึ่งร้านค่ะ

Incorrect existential presentation—อยู่ locates an identifiable entity rather than introducing a new one this way.

✅ ริมถนนมีร้านซ่อมจักรยานเล็ก ๆ หนึ่งร้านค่ะ

rim thanon mi ran som chakkayan lek lek nueng ran kha

There is one small bicycle-repair shop by the road. (ordinary-polite existential statement, female speaker)

3. Using มี to locate a known object

❌ กระเป๋าของผมมีใต้ที่นั่งครับ

Incorrect for locating an identifiable bag—use อยู่.

✅ กระเป๋าเดินทางของผมอยู่ใต้ที่นั่งครับ

krapao doen thang khong phom yu tai thi nang khrap

My travel bag is under the seat. (ordinary-polite static-location statement, male speaker)

4. Adding English do-support to a route question

❌ ทำรถออกจากสถานีกี่โมงคะ

Incorrect—ทำ is not an auxiliary corresponding to English ‘does.’

✅ รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกจากสถานีกี่โมงคะ

rot thiao sutthai ok chak sathani ki mong kha

What time does the last bus leave the station? (ordinary-polite source question, female speaker)

5. Treating a destination as an English article-marked noun

❌ เราจะไปหนึ่งโรงแรมใกล้แม่น้ำครับ

Incorrect—หนึ่ง is a numeral, not an indefinite article before a goal noun.

✅ เราจะไปพักที่โรงแรมแห่งหนึ่งใกล้แม่น้ำครับ

rao cha pai phak thi rongraem haeng nueng klai maenam khrap

We are going to stay at a hotel near the river. (ordinary-polite plan, male speaker; purpose and indefinite location properly packaged)

Key Takeaways

Neutral route description follows the conceptual corridor from source through path to goal. Manner and directional predicates build the motion around those grounds; a final place may be an explicit goal or the location of a later event. Static อยู่, identifying คือ, and existential มี use different orders. Fronting and omission are licensed by discourse, not by free rearrangement or missing argument structure.
