Inside a Thai verb chain, ไป and มา can contribute a path relative to an adopted viewpoint. ไป presents motion away from or onward beyond that center; มา presents motion toward it. Thus เดินไป is walking away/onward, while เดินมา is walking toward the relevant center.
The difficult part is that the center is chosen in discourse. It is often the speaker's current location, but it can be the listener's location, a destination both speakers are mentally attending to, or a point inside a narrative. Do not translate English go and come mechanically; first locate the viewpoint.
The basic contrast: away versus toward
Imagine that the speaker is standing by a doorway:
เด็กคนนั้นกำลังวิ่งมาทางประตูอยู่ค่ะ
dek khon nan kamlang wing ma thang pratu yu kha
That child is running toward the doorway. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; the speaker's doorway is the center)
เด็กคนนั้นกำลังวิ่งไปทางสนามอยู่ค่ะ
dek khon nan kamlang wing pai thang sanam yu kha
That child is running away toward the field. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; movement proceeds away from the center)
The manner verb วิ่ง comes first; ไป or มา adds the path. กำลัง...อยู่ places each directional chain in progress without changing either verb.
ช่วยถือเก้าอี้มาทางนี้หน่อยครับ
chuai thue kao i ma thang ni noi khrap
Please carry the chair this way. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; movement toward the speaker)
ช่วยถือเก้าอี้ไปวางทางโน้นหน่อยครับ
chuai thue kao i pai wang thang non noi khrap
Please carry the chair over and put it there. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; movement away toward a visible location)
These two requests make the center explicit through ทางนี้ “this way” and ทางโน้น “over there.” In ordinary conversation the directional often supplies what English expresses through here, there, over, or a choice between bring and take.
Where ไป and มา fit in the chain
Their position identifies the relation they contribute:
| Function | Productive frame | Model | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| manner + path | เดิน/วิ่ง/ขับ + ไป/มา | เดินมา | walk toward the center |
| handling + carried object | เอา/ถือ/ยก + object + ไป/มา | เอาแฟ้มไป | take the folder away/onward |
| path + purpose | ไป/มา + action | มารับของ | come in order to collect something |
| boundary + viewpoint | เข้า/ออก + ไป/มา | เดินออกมา | walk out toward the center |
| return + viewpoint | กลับ + ไป/มา | กลับมา | return toward the center |
พนักงานขับรถมารับเอกสารที่สำนักงานครับ
phanak ngan khap rot ma rap ekkasan thi samnakngan khrap
The employee drove over to collect the documents at the office. (ordinary polite report, male speaker at or conceptually centered on the office)
ฉันเอาร่มไปฝากไว้ที่ประชาสัมพันธ์ค่ะ
chan ao rom pai fak wai thi prachasamphan kha
I took the umbrella and left it at reception. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; handling plus outward disposal)
In ขับรถมารับ, driving supplies the manner/vehicle, มา leads toward the adopted office center, and รับ supplies purpose. In เอาร่มไปฝากไว้, the umbrella is the shared object of handling, outward movement, and leaving for safekeeping.
The center can shift with the conversation
Thai speakers can adopt a salient destination rather than mechanically keeping the physical speaker as center. This is why two descriptions of the same trip can differ without either being geographically false.
แขกกำลังเดินมาที่โต๊ะของเราค่ะ
khaek kamlang doen ma thi to khong rao kha
The guest is walking toward our table. (ordinary polite report, female speaker at the table)
พนักงานเดินไปหาแขกที่โต๊ะริมหน้าต่างครับ
phanak ngan doen pai ha khaek thi to rim natang khrap
The employee walked over to the guest at the table by the window. (ordinary polite report, male speaker viewing the path as away/onward)
The listener is not automatically the center, and ไปหาคุณ “go to see you” is perfectly normal when the speaker keeps their own current position as reference. Conversely, a traveler speaking to someone at the destination can adopt that destination and say กำลังมา “I'm coming.” The choice is perspectival rather than a rule tied to grammatical person.
Boundary direction: เข้า/ออก plus ไป/มา
The boundary verb tells whether motion crosses inward or outward. ไป/มา then locates that crossing relative to the viewpoint:
เขาได้ยินเสียงแล้วเดินออกมาจากห้องครับ
khao dai yin siang laeo doen ok ma chak hong khrap
When he heard the sound, he walked out of the room toward us. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; outward crossing toward the center)
ลูกค้าเปิดประตูแล้วเดินเข้าไปในห้องรับรองค่ะ
luk kha poet pratu laeo doen khao pai nai hong raprong kha
The customer opened the door and walked into the reception room. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; inward crossing away from the observation point)
ออกมา and เข้าไป are not indivisible translations of English out and in. Each element contributes: ออก/เข้า encodes the boundary direction, while มา/ไป encodes the deictic path. The next page on เข้า and ออก develops these combinations.
Motion plus purpose
Before an activity, lexical ไป or มา can introduce a journey whose goal is the following event:
หลังเลิกงานผมจะไปรับลูกที่โรงเรียนครับ
lang loek ngan phom cha pai rap luk thi rongrian khrap
After work I'll go pick up my child at school. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; go plus purpose)
ช่างมาซ่อมเครื่องปรับอากาศเมื่อเช้าค่ะ
chang ma som khrueang prap akat muea chao kha
The technician came to repair the air conditioner this morning. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; come plus purpose)
The second predicate is not an infinitive. Thai verbs are invariant; เมื่อเช้า supplies past reference and จะ supplies a prospective frame. The dedicated go-purpose and come-purpose pages treat their discourse differences.
Aspect and negation scope
An aspect marker can frame the motion chain, and negation can deny either the whole journey or a later endpoint.
ตอนนี้ผู้จัดการกำลังเดินมาทางห้องประชุมอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni phuchatkan kamlang doen ma thang hong prachum yu kha
The manager is walking toward the meeting room now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; ongoing toward-motion)
เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้เอารถไปครับ เพราะรถยังซ่อมไม่เสร็จ
muea wan phom mai dai ao rot pai khrap phro rot yang som mai set
Yesterday I didn't take the car because the repairs were not finished yet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; broad negation denies taking it away)
คนขับรถตู้ขับมาไม่ถึงโรงแรมครับ เพราะสะพานปิด
khon khap rot tu khap ma mai thueng rongraem khrap phro saphan pit
The van driver set out toward the hotel but could not reach it because the bridge was closed. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; toward-motion preserved, endpoint denied)
The last two sentences differ in scope. ไม่ได้เอารถไป denies the handling/motion event. ขับรถมาไม่ถึง preserves movement toward the center but denies arrival. English didn't and couldn't are translations of the resulting meanings, not instructions for Thai word order.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A receptionist is waiting for a coworker:
ตอนนี้คุณอยู่ตรงไหนคะ
ton ni khun yu trong nai kha
Where are you now? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ผมกำลังเดินมาที่เคาน์เตอร์ครับ
phom kamlang doen ma thi khaotoe khrap
I'm walking toward the counter now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; counter adopted as center)
ถ้าเห็นแฟ้มสีแดง ช่วยหยิบมาด้วยนะคะ
tha hen faem si daeng chuai yip ma duai na kha
If you see the red folder, please pick it up and bring it with you. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ผมจะเอามาวางข้างคอมพิวเตอร์ให้
dai khrap phom cha ao ma wang khang khomphiotoe hai
All right. I'll bring it over and put it beside the computer for you. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; recoverable folder omitted)
Common Mistakes
1. Choosing ไป when the request is explicitly toward the speaker
❌ ฉันยืนอยู่ตรงนี้ ช่วยเอาแฟ้มไปให้ฉันหน่อยค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘bring the folder here’; ไป conflicts with the explicitly speaker-centered path.
✅ ฉันยืนอยู่ตรงนี้ ช่วยเอาแฟ้มมาให้ฉันหน่อยค่ะ
chan yuen yu trong ni chuai ao faem ma hai chan noi kha
I'm standing right here; please bring the folder to me. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
2. Choosing มา for movement explicitly away from everyone present
❌ เราอยู่ที่เคาน์เตอร์ ช่วยเอากล่องมาวางในห้องเก็บของครับ
Wrong for the intended path away from the shared counter toward the storeroom.
✅ เราอยู่ที่เคาน์เตอร์ ช่วยเอากล่องไปวางในห้องเก็บของครับ
rao yu thi khaotoe chuai ao klong pai wang nai hong kep khong khrap
We're at the counter; please take the box and put it in the storeroom. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
3. Placing the carried object after the directional
❌ ช่วยเอามาถุงเอกสารด้วยค่ะ
Incorrect—the object of เอา normally precedes directional มา in this handling chain.
✅ ช่วยเอาถุงเอกสารมาด้วยค่ะ
chuai ao thung ekkasan ma duai kha
Please bring the document bag too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
4. Confusing manner + direction with go + purpose
❌ เด็กไปวิ่งทางโน้นครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘the child is running away that way’; ไปวิ่ง normally means going somewhere in order to run.
✅ เด็กวิ่งไปทางโน้นครับ
dek wing pai thang non khrap
The child is running away in that direction. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
5. Repeating จะ as if each verb were a separate English infinitive
❌ พรุ่งนี้เธอจะขับรถจะมารับฉันค่ะ
Incorrect—one prospective marker can frame the linked driving and toward-motion.
✅ พรุ่งนี้เธอจะขับรถมารับฉันค่ะ
phrung ni thoe cha khap rot ma rap chan kha
Tomorrow she'll drive over to pick me up. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ไป marks movement away/onward from an adopted center; มา marks movement toward it.
- The center is discourse-sensitive and is not always automatically the speaker or listener.
- After a manner verb, ไป/มา adds path; before an activity, lexical ไป/มา can introduce purpose.
- In handling chains, the shared object normally precedes ไป/มา: เอา + object + ไป/มา.
