Thai เข้า and ออก trace opposite sides of a boundary. เข้า directs a mover or object inward; ออก directs it outward. They can function as lexical motion verbs, follow a manner verb, combine with deictic ไป/มา, or describe whether an action achieves an inward or outward result.
English often compresses the same information into enter, leave, insert, remove, or particles such as in and out. Thai builds the path through ordered predicates. The verbs remain unchanged; participant linking, viewpoint, aspect, and negation determine the complete reading.
Inward versus outward paths
The simplest contrast uses one boundary and opposite directions:
แมวเดินเข้ามาในครัวค่ะ
maeo doen khao ma nai khrua kha
The cat walked into the kitchen toward us. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; inward crossing plus toward-viewpoint)
แมวเดินออกไปทางหลังบ้านค่ะ
maeo doen ok pai thang lang ban kha
The cat walked out toward the back of the house. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; outward crossing plus away/onward viewpoint)
เดิน supplies manner, เข้า/ออก supplies boundary direction, and มา/ไป locates the path relative to the adopted center. The order follows the path: manner first, boundary crossing next, deictic orientation last.
เด็กวิ่งเข้าไปหลบฝนในร้านครับ
dek wing khao pai lop fon nai ran khrap
The child ran into the shop to take shelter from the rain. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; manner, inward-away path, then purpose)
The child is the understood subject of วิ่ง, เข้าไป, and หลบฝน. English introduces the purpose with to; Thai does not turn หลบ into an infinitive.
Productive slots
| Function | Productive frame | Model | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| person crosses boundary | manner + เข้า/ออก + ไป/มา | เดินออกมา | walk outward toward the center |
| simple destination/source | เข้า + place / ออกจาก + place | เข้าห้อง / ออกจากร้าน | enter / leave |
| move an object | เอา/ยก/ถือ + object + เข้า/ออก | ยกกล่องเข้า | move the box inward |
| move and dispose | เอา + object + ออกไป + action | เอาขยะออกไปทิ้ง | take rubbish out to discard it |
| achieved result | action + เข้า/ออก | เสียบเข้า / ดึงออก | insertion or extraction succeeds |
| failed result | action + ไม่เข้า/ไม่ออก | ดึงไม่ออก | action occurs but result fails |
The table is productive but not unlimited. The physical dimensions and the lexical frame must fit: one can ดึงลิ้นชักออก “pull a drawer out,” but not attach ออก to every English verb merely because its translation contains out.
Moving an object across the boundary
When a subject causes an object to move, the object normally follows the handling or manner verb and remains shared by the directional predicate.
คนส่งของยกกล่องเข้ามาวางข้างประตูครับ
khon song khong yok klong khao ma wang khang pratu khrap
The delivery worker lifted the box in toward us and placed it beside the door. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; box shared across lifting, inward motion, and placement)
ช่วยเอาขวดเปล่าออกไปทิ้งหลังร้านค่ะ
chuai ao khuat plao ok pai thing lang ran kha
Please take the empty bottles out and discard them behind the shop. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; shared bottles move outward and are discarded)
The noun is not repeated before วาง or ทิ้ง because its role is recoverable. Compare the more general shared-participant guide.
พนักงานเข็นรถเข็นออกมาที่ลานรับของค่ะ
phanak ngan khen rot khen ok ma thi lan rap khong kha
The employee pushed the trolley out toward the receiving area. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; pushing manner plus outward-toward path)
In the last example, the adopted center is the receiving area. มา does not necessarily mean movement toward the physical location where the sentence is later repeated.
Direction versus achieved result
After some actions, เข้า or ออก presents the result of successful insertion, extraction, opening, or visibility. Internal negation preserves the attempted action while denying that result.
ลิ้นชักติดมาก ผมดึงไม่ออกครับ
linchak tit mak phom dueng mai ok khrap
The drawer is badly stuck; I can't pull it out. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; pulling attempted, outward result not achieved)
ช่างถอดสกรูตัวสุดท้ายออกแล้วค่ะ
chang thot sakru tua sutthai ok laeo kha
The technician has removed the final screw. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; extraction result attained)
Initial ไม่ได้ดึง would instead deny that the pulling event happened. ดึงไม่ออก says the person pulled or tried to pull but extraction failed. This follows the same scope logic described in negative scope.
สายเส้นนี้เสียบเข้าช่องด้านซ้ายได้พอดีครับ
sai sen ni siap khao chong dan sai dai phodi khrap
This cable fits perfectly into the socket on the left. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; inward insertion succeeds)
Do not equate every postverbal เข้า/ออก with aspect. The verb still contributes a spatial or result path, while แล้ว can separately mark an attained viewpoint.
Aspect and time do not change the verbs
ลูกค้ากำลังเดินเข้ามาทางประตูด้านข้างอยู่ค่ะ
luk kha kamlang doen khao ma thang pratu dan khang yu kha
A customer is walking in through the side door toward us. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; ongoing inward path)
เมื่อเช้าผมออกไปส่งเอกสารก่อนสำนักงานเปิดครับ
muea chao phom ok pai song ekkasan kon samnakngan poet khrap
This morning I went out to deliver documents before the office opened. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; past time from เมื่อเช้า)
รถคันใหญ่เข้าไปในซอยไม่ได้ค่ะ ทางแคบเกินไป
rot khan yai khao pai nai soi mai dai kha thang khaep koen pai
A large vehicle cannot go into the lane; the way is too narrow. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; postverbal inability)
กำลัง...อยู่, a past adverb, and postverbal ไม่ได้ contribute viewpoint, time, and inability. เข้า and ออก themselves do not conjugate. For event denial, รถคันนั้นไม่ได้เข้าไป would mean that the vehicle did not go in, not that entry was impossible.
Serial chain versus lexical compound
Transparent directionals allow productive substitutions: เดินเข้ามา, วิ่งเข้ามา, เข็นรถเข้ามา. By contrast, เข้าใจ “understand” and ออกแบบ “design” are lexical compounds in their ordinary meanings. They cannot be interpreted by tracing a physical boundary or split freely around an argument.
นักเรียนเข้าใจคำอธิบายแล้วครับ
nakrian khao chai kham athibai laeo khrap
The students understand the explanation now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; lexical เข้าใจ, not inward motion)
This distinction is sometimes gradual, but productive path substitutions and independent directional meaning are strong evidence for a serial analysis. See verb compounds for the full diagnostic set.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers are preparing a meeting room:
ข้างนอกมีลูกค้ารออยู่ไหมคะ
khang nok mi luk kha ro yu mai kha
Is there a customer waiting outside? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
มีครับ กำลังเดินเข้ามาทางประตูหน้า
mi khrap kamlang doen khao ma thang pratu na
Yes. They're walking in through the front door now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; subject omitted recoverably)
งั้นช่วยเปิดประตูให้เข้ามาได้เลยค่ะ
ngan chuai poet pratu hai khao ma dai loei kha
Then please open the door and let them come in. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; customer understood as actor after ให้)
ได้ครับ แล้วผมจะเอากล่องเปล่าออกไปด้วย
dai khrap laeo phom cha ao klong plao ok pai duai
All right. I'll take the empty box out too. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing manner and boundary direction
❌ เด็กเข้าเดินมาในห้องครับ
Incorrect for ‘the child walked into the room toward us’; the manner verb precedes the boundary and deictic direction.
✅ เด็กเดินเข้ามาในห้องครับ
dek doen khao ma nai hong khrap
The child walked into the room toward us. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
2. Omitting จาก before a named source
❌ ฉันออกห้องประชุมตอนเที่ยงค่ะ
Incorrect neutral frame for leaving a named source; ออก takes จาก before the source.
✅ ฉันออกจากห้องประชุมตอนเที่ยงค่ะ
chan ok chak hong prachum ton thiang kha
I left the meeting room at noon. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
3. Putting the moved object after directional ออก
❌ ช่วยเอาออกถุงขยะใบนี้ครับ
Incorrect—the object follows เอา and precedes directional ออก.
✅ ช่วยเอาถุงขยะใบนี้ออกไปครับ
chuai ao thung khaya bai ni ok pai khrap
Please take this rubbish bag out. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)
4. Using broad event denial for failed extraction
❌ ผมไม่ได้ดึงลิ้นชักครับ
Wrong for ‘I tried but couldn't pull the drawer out’; this simply denies pulling.
✅ ผมดึงลิ้นชักไม่ออกครับ
phom dueng linchak mai ok khrap
I can't pull the drawer out. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; attempted action, failed result)
5. Splitting a lexical compound as if it were a path
❌ ผมเข้าเรื่องทั้งหมดใจแล้วครับ
Incorrect—เข้าใจ is the lexical verb ‘understand’ and cannot be split around its content.
✅ ผมเข้าใจเรื่องทั้งหมดแล้วครับ
phom khao chai rueang thangmot laeo khrap
I understand the whole matter now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- เข้า traces inward motion; ออก traces outward motion or extraction.
- Add มา or ไป after the boundary verb to locate the path toward or away/onward from the adopted center.
- A handled object normally precedes the directional and remains shared by later predicates.
- Internal ไม่เข้า/ไม่ออก can deny a result while preserving the earlier attempt; initial negation has broader scope.
