ออก: exit; out; produce

Thai ออก is an invariant verb meaning “exit, leave, come/go out,” but its work extends far beyond one English gloss. It supplies outward direction after another action, marks successful emergence in คิดออก “figure out” and อ่านออก “be able to read,” and occurs in production or issuance frames such as ออกใบเสร็จ “issue a receipt.” Its position and collocation determine which meaning is active.

Leaving and outward motion

As a main motion verb, ออก may stand alone when the source is obvious. A source is normally introduced by จาก: ออกจากบ้าน, ออกจากห้อง. With ไป or มา, the event gains a viewpoint: เดินออกไป moves outward and away, while เดินออกมา moves outward toward the adopted center.

เอา + object + ออกremove or take something outเอาหนังสือออกจากกระเป๋า
action + ออก / ไม่ออกachieve or fail to achieve emergence/resultเปิดออก / เปิดไม่ออก

ผมออกจากบ้านก่อนเจ็ดโมงทุกวันครับ

phom ok chak ban kon chet mong thuk wan khrap

I leave home before seven every day. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

เธอเดินออกไปซื้อกาแฟหน้าปากซอยค่ะ

thoe doen ok pai sue kafae na pak soi kha

She walked out to buy coffee at the entrance to the lane. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; outward and away)

พอได้ยินเสียงเรียก เด็กก็วิ่งออกมาครับ

pho dai yin siang riak dek ko wing ok ma khrap

When the child heard someone calling, they ran out toward us. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

English out behaves like a particle or preposition in many expressions. Thai ออก remains a verb-like directional in a predicate chain; จาก separately identifies the source. See the เข้า–ออก serial-verb guide for detailed ordering patterns.

💡
Use ออกจาก + source to name where someone leaves. Use ออกไป/ออกมา to add the path relative to a viewpoint. Do not force one English word to cover both source and direction.

Removing an object and outward results

In caused motion, the object normally follows เอา before ออก: เอาขยะออกไป, เอาเสื้อออกจากกระเป๋า. With other actions, ออก can present a result becoming visible, detached, or successfully achieved. ดึงออก is pull out; ล้างออก is wash off/out; เปิดไม่ออก says an opening attempt cannot achieve its result.

ช่วยเอาขยะถุงนี้ออกไปหน้าบ้านด้วยค่ะ

chuai ao khaya thung ni ok pai na ban duai kha

Please take this bag of rubbish out to the front of the house. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

คราบกาแฟตรงแขนเสื้อซักไม่ออกครับ

khrap kafae trong khaen suea sak mai ok khrap

The coffee stain on the sleeve won't wash out. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; failed result)

ฝากล่องแน่นมาก ฉันเปิดไม่ออกค่ะ

fa klong naen mak chan poet mai ok kha

The box lid is very tight; I can't get it open. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

In these examples, ไม่ may negate the result ออก rather than the first action. ไม่เปิด says no opening action is undertaken; เปิดไม่ออก says the action fails to yield an open result. The result-predicate page explains this scope pattern.

Producing, issuing, and bringing something forth

ออก can also head conventional transitive frames in which an institution or person produces something for public or practical use. ออกใบเสร็จ is issue a receipt, ออกประกาศ is issue an announcement, ออกกฎ is enact/issue a rule, and ออกสินค้าใหม่ is launch a new product. These meanings extend the image of something coming outward into circulation.

ทางร้านออกใบเสร็จให้ลูกค้าทุกครั้งค่ะ

thang ran ok bai set hai luk kha thuk khrang kha

The shop issues customers a receipt every time. (formal-polite service information, female voice)

บริษัทจะออกสินค้าใหม่ปลายเดือนนี้ครับ

borisat cha ok sinkha mai plai duean ni khrap

The company will launch a new product at the end of this month. (formal-neutral business report, male speaker)

โรงเรียนออกประกาศเรื่องวันหยุดเพิ่มเติมแล้วค่ะ

rongrian ok prakat rueang wan yut phoemtoem laeo kha

The school has issued an additional announcement about the holiday. (formal-neutral report, female speaker)

This production use is not available with every English object of produce. A factory ผลิตสินค้า, and a person ทำอาหาร; ออก belongs to established issuance, release, and creative-result frames.

Established combinations and grammaticalized results

Several frequent combinations must be learned as units while their internal outward/result logic remains visible.

CombinationUsual meaningRegister
ออกเสียงpronounce; voiceneutral
ออกแบบdesignneutral
ออกกำลังกายexerciseneutral
ออกเดินทางset out on a journeyneutral-careful
คิดออกthink of; figure outneutral
อ่านออกbe able to decode/readneutral

คำนี้ออกเสียงยากนิดหนึ่งค่ะ

kham ni ok siang yak nit nueng kha

This word is a little difficult to pronounce. (ordinary polite instructional speech, female speaker)

ผมคิดวิธีแก้ปัญหาออกแล้วครับ

phom khit withi kae panha ok laeo khrap

I've figured out a way to solve the problem. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; successful cognitive result)

ลูกอ่านเมนูสั้น ๆ ออกแล้วค่ะ

luk an menu san san ok laeo kha

My child can read short menus now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; decoding ability)

ออกแบบ and ออกกำลังกาย are lexicalized combinations, not freely productive directions. By contrast, result ออก remains productive with a restricted set of actions whose result can emerge. There is no perfectly logical list: collocations must be learned from use.

The unchanged headword across environments

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
ผม + past contextเมื่อเช้าผมออกจากบ้านเร็วเมื่อเช้า supplies past time
ฉัน + ongoingฉันกำลังออกจากสำนักงานกำลัง presents departure in progress
เขา + completed transitionเขาออกไปแล้วแล้ว presents departure as reached
พวกเรา + futureพวกเราจะออกเดินทางพรุ่งนี้จะ and พรุ่งนี้ present a later event
negativeวันนี้เขาไม่ออกจากบ้านไม่ before ออก denies leaving

เมื่อเช้าผมออกจากบ้านเร็วกว่าปกติครับ

muea chao phom ok chak ban reo kwa pakati khrap

I left home earlier than usual this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังออกจากสำนักงานค่ะ

ton ni chan kamlang ok chak samnakngan kha

I'm leaving the office now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

เขาออกไปส่งเอกสารแล้วครับ

khao ok pai song ekkasan laeo khrap

He has gone out to deliver documents. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะออกเดินทางตอนหกโมงค่ะ

phrung ni phuak rao cha ok doen thang ton hok mong kha

Tomorrow we'll set out at six. (ordinary polite travel planning, female speaker)

Omission and ordinary-polite dialogue

Source and destination can be omitted when shared. ออกได้ไหม at a blocked doorway asks whether exit is possible; ออกได้ครับ answers with the same understood route.

ประตูด้านหน้าเสีย เราออกทางนี้ได้ไหมคะ

pratu dan na sia rao ok thang ni dai mai kha

The front door is broken; can we go out this way? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ออกได้ครับ แต่พื้นข้างนอกเปียก

ok dai khrap tae phuen khang nok piak

Yes, but the ground outside is wet. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; route omitted recoverably)

ต้องเอากล่องนี้ออกไปด้วยไหมคะ

tong ao klong ni ok pai duai mai kha

Do we need to take this box outside too? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ไม่ต้องครับ วางไว้ตรงเดิมได้เลย

mai tong khrap wang wai trong doem dai loei

No; you can leave it where it was. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

💡
Keep ไม่ได้ออก and ออกไม่ได้ separate. The first denies that leaving occurred; the second says leaving is impossible or not permitted. English couldn't leave can hide this Thai scope contrast.

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting จาก before an explicit source

❌ ผมออกสำนักงานตอนห้าโมงครับ

Awkward for a neutral explicit-source frame; use ออกจาก before the office being left.

✅ ผมออกจากสำนักงานตอนห้าโมงครับ

phom ok chak samnakngan ton ha mong khrap

I leave the office at five. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

2. Putting directional ออก before the removed object

❌ ช่วยเอาออกขยะถุงนี้ค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—the removed object follows เอา before ออก.

✅ ช่วยเอาขยะถุงนี้ออกไปค่ะ

chuai ao khaya thung ni ok pai kha

Please take this bag of rubbish out. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

3. Confusing event denial with a failed result

❌ ฝากล่องแน่น ฉันไม่ได้เปิดค่ะ

Wrong for the intended ‘I cannot get it open’; this merely denies an opening event.

✅ ฝากล่องแน่น ฉันเปิดไม่ออกค่ะ

fa klong naen chan poet mai ok kha

The box lid is tight; I can't get it open. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Using ออก as a general word for produce

❌ โรงงานออกเสื้อหนึ่งพันตัวครับ

Incorrect ordinary production collocation; factories ผลิต goods, while ออก suits issuing or launching.

✅ โรงงานผลิตเสื้อหนึ่งพันตัวครับ

rongngan phalit suea nueng phan tua khrap

The factory produces one thousand shirts. (formal-neutral report, male speaker)

5. Moving plain negation after a source

❌ วันนี้เขาออกจากบ้านไม่ครับ

Incorrect—plain ไม่ precedes the denied ออก predicate.

✅ วันนี้เขาไม่ออกจากบ้านครับ

wan ni khao mai ok chak ban khrap

He isn't leaving home today. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ออกจาก + source presents leaving; ออก + ไป/มา adds outward direction and viewpoint.
  • After an action, ออก can mark emergence or success; result negation appears in forms such as เปิดไม่ออก.
  • ออกใบเสร็จ, ออกประกาศ, and ออกสินค้าใหม่ are established issuance or release frames.
  • ออก stays unchanged. Time, aspect, result structure, collocation, and negation create the full interpretation.
