เข้า: enter; inward

Thai เข้า is an invariant verb meaning “enter” and a directional element meaning “inward.” It can head a motion clause, follow a manner verb, direct an object inward, or occur in established expressions such as เข้าเรียน “attend class,” เข้าร่วม “participate,” and เข้ากัน “match/get along.” English often distributes these meanings across enter, go in, fit, join, and attend; Thai organizes them around an inward path.

Entering a place

The mover normally comes before เข้า. A familiar place can follow directly, while ใน makes an interior explicit and ไป/มา adds viewpoint. เข้าห้อง means enter the room; เดินเข้าไปในห้อง presents walking inward and away from the current viewpoint.

FrameMeaningNatural substitution
mover + เข้า + placeenter a placeเข้าห้องประชุม
manner + เข้าไปใน + placemove inward, away from the viewpointเดินเข้าไปในร้าน
manner + เข้ามาmove inward toward the viewpointวิ่งเข้ามา
เอา + object + เข้า + placetake or move something inเอารถเข้าโรงรถ
action + เข้า / ไม่เข้าachieve or fail to achieve inward entryใส่เข้า / ใส่ไม่เข้า

ลูกค้าเข้าอาคารทางประตูด้านข้างค่ะ

luk kha khao akhan thang pratu dan khang kha

Customers enter the building through the side door. (ordinary polite service information, female voice)

ผมเดินเข้าไปในร้านแล้วถามหาผู้จัดการครับ

phom doen khao pai nai ran laeo tham ha phu chatkan khrap

I walked into the shop and asked for the manager. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

พอฝนตก เด็ก ๆ ก็วิ่งเข้ามาในบ้านค่ะ

pho fon tok dek dek ko wing khao ma nai ban kha

When it started raining, the children ran into the house toward us. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The directionals after เข้า are not decorative. เข้าไป points inward and onward or away from the adopted center; เข้ามา points inward toward it. The same viewpoint principle governs ไป and มา more generally. See motion with ไป and มา.

💡
Think of เข้า as an inward arrow. Then add ไป if the arrow continues away from the viewpoint and มา if it approaches the viewpoint. English in alone does not show this deictic contrast.

Moving an object inward and reaching a result

With a caused-motion sequence, the object normally follows the action that controls it: เอากล่องเข้าบ้าน, เข็นรถเข้าโรงรถ. When เข้า follows another predicate, it can present successful entry or fit. เสียบปลั๊กไม่เข้า means the plug will not go in; เก็บของเข้าที่ means put things back into their proper place.

ช่วยเอาโต๊ะพับเข้าห้องเก็บของให้หน่อยค่ะ

chuai ao to phap khao hong kep khong hai noi kha

Please take the folding table into the storeroom for me. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ปลั๊กอันนี้เสียบไม่เข้าครับ ช่องเล็กเกินไป

plak an ni siap mai khao khrap chong lek koen pai

This plug won't go in; the socket is too small. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; failed inward result)

ก่อนกลับ ช่วยเก็บเก้าอี้เข้าที่ด้วยนะคะ

kon klap chuai kep kao i khao thi duai na kha

Before leaving, please put the chairs back in place. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

This result use is constructional. เข้า does not become an English preposition or suffix; it remains a directional predicate sharing participants with the preceding action. The เข้า–ออก serial-verb guide develops the possible orders and shared objects.

Institutional and lexicalized frames

Several frequent combinations preserve a broad idea of entering a state, activity, or group, but their exact meaning must be learned as a collocation.

CombinationUsual meaningRegister
เข้าเรียนattend class; enter a courseneutral
เข้าทำงานstart/report for workneutral workplace
เข้าร่วมparticipate; joinformal-neutral
เข้าสู่enter into a stage/placeformal, written
เข้ากันmatch; be compatible; get alongneutral
เข้าใจunderstandneutral lexical compound

นักศึกษาต้องเข้าเรียนอย่างน้อยร้อยละแปดสิบค่ะ

naksueksa tong khao rian yang noi roi la paet sip kha

Students must attend at least eighty percent of the classes. (formal-neutral academic information, female voice)

บริษัทเชิญพนักงานทุกฝ่ายเข้าร่วมการอบรมครับ

borisat choen phanak ngan thuk fai khao ruam kan oprom khrap

The company invites staff from every department to join the training. (formal-neutral workplace announcement, male voice)

สีเสื้อตัวนี้เข้ากับกางเกงพอดีค่ะ

si suea tua ni khao kap kangkeng phodi kha

The color of this shirt goes perfectly with the trousers. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

เข้าใจ is now an established lexical verb “understand”; learners should not analyze every occurrence as literal physical entry. เข้ากับ before a noun means match or get along with it, while เข้ากัน presents mutual compatibility. These lexicalized uses show a historical connection with inward integration, not a rule for inventing new compounds.

The unchanged headword across environments

เข้า never changes for subject or tense. Time expressions and markers around it contribute viewpoint and polarity.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
ผม + past contextเมื่อเช้าผมเข้าอาคารทางด้านหลังเมื่อเช้า locates entry earlier
ฉัน + ongoingฉันกำลังเข้าห้องประชุมกำลัง presents motion in progress
เขา + reached stateเขาเข้าไปข้างในแล้วแล้ว presents the transition as reached
พวกเรา + futureพวกเราจะเข้าร่วมพรุ่งนี้จะ and พรุ่งนี้ present a later event
negativeวันนี้เขาไม่เข้าเรียนไม่ before เข้า denies attendance

เมื่อเช้าผมเข้าอาคารทางด้านหลังครับ

muea chao phom khao akhan thang dan lang khrap

I entered the building through the back this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from context)

ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังเข้าห้องประชุมค่ะ

ton ni chan kamlang khao hong prachum kha

I'm entering the meeting room now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

เขาเข้าไปข้างในแล้วครับ

khao khao pai khang nai laeo khrap

He has gone inside now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; transition reached)

พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะเข้าร่วมประชุมออนไลน์ค่ะ

phrung ni phuak rao cha khao ruam prachum onlai kha

Tomorrow we'll join the online meeting. (ordinary polite workplace plan, female speaker)

ไม่ได้เข้า denies that entry or attendance occurred; เข้าไม่ได้ says entry is impossible or prohibited. That scope contrast is more informative than treating ได้ as a past ending.

Omission and ordinary-polite dialogue

The destination can be omitted once it is visible or named. In a doorway exchange, เข้าได้ไหม — เข้าได้ครับ is complete because “this room” is shared.

ห้องประชุมเปิดแล้ว เข้าได้เลยไหมคะ

hong prachum poet laeo khao dai loei mai kha

The meeting room is open now; may I go in? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เข้าได้ครับ แต่ช่วยปิดประตูด้วย

khao dai khrap tae chuai pit pratu duai

You may, but please close the door too. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; destination omitted recoverably)

ต้องเอากล่องพวกนี้เข้าไปด้วยไหมคะ

tong ao klong phuak ni khao pai duai mai kha

Do these boxes need to be taken inside too? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

เอาเข้าไปสองกล่องก่อนครับ

ao khao pai song klong kon khrap

Take two boxes in first. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)

💡
Distinguish ไม่ได้เข้า “did not enter/attend” from เข้าไม่ได้ “cannot or may not enter.” The position of ไม่ and ได้ changes scope while เข้า itself stays identical.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding an English-style preposition before a simple destination

❌ ผมเข้าถึงห้องประชุมแล้วครับ

Wrong for the intended ordinary ‘entered the meeting room’; เข้าถึง means reach or gain access, often abstractly.

✅ ผมเข้าห้องประชุมแล้วครับ

phom khao hong prachum laeo khrap

I've entered the meeting room. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Reversing the object in caused inward motion

❌ ช่วยเอาเข้ากล่องพวกนี้ค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—the moved object belongs after เอา and before directional เข้า.

✅ ช่วยเอากล่องพวกนี้เข้าห้องค่ะ

chuai ao klong phuak ni khao hong kha

Please take these boxes into the room. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

3. Treating the second verb as an infinitive

❌ นักเรียนเข้าที่จะร่วมกิจกรรมครับ

Incorrect—ที่จะ is not an infinitive marker inside the established เข้าร่วม combination.

✅ นักเรียนเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมหลังเลิกเรียนครับ

nakrian khao ruam kitkam lang loek rian khrap

The students join the activity after class. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

4. Confusing event denial and inability

❌ เมื่อวานฉันเข้าอาคารไม่ได้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended simple report ‘I did not enter’; this says entry was impossible.

✅ เมื่อวานฉันไม่ได้เข้าอาคารค่ะ

muea wan chan mai dai khao akhan kha

Yesterday I did not enter the building. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

5. Moving plain negation after the destination

❌ วันนี้เขาเข้าเรียนไม่ครับ

Incorrect—plain ไม่ precedes the denied เข้าเรียน predicate.

✅ วันนี้เขาไม่เข้าเรียนครับ

wan ni khao mai khao rian khrap

He isn't attending class today. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • เข้า + place presents entry; manner + เข้า + ไป/มา adds manner and viewpoint.
  • After another action, เข้า can supply an inward path or achieved fit; objects occupy construction-specific positions.
  • เข้าเรียน, เข้าร่วม, เข้าสู่, เข้ากัน, and เข้าใจ are frequent institutional or lexicalized frames.
  • เข้า never conjugates. Context, aspect, directionals, result structure, and negation build its interpretation.
