ปิด: close; turn off

Thai ปิด is the invariant verb used for closing a door or container, turning off many devices, ending business or access, and establishing a closed state. The object guides its conventional translation: ปิดประตู “close the door,” ปิดไฟ “turn off the light,” ปิดร้าน “close the shop,” and ปิดรับสมัคร “close applications.” It also appears in lexical combinations such as ปิดบัง “conceal,” whose meaning cannot be assembled by translating each part independently.

Physical closure and deactivation

With a door, window, lid, book, or opening, ปิด creates physical closure. With a light, telephone, machine, television, or application, it commonly means turn off, shut down, or close. English divides these meanings among close, shut, turn off, and switch off; Thai often uses the same headword plus different objects.

Before leaving the room, please close every window. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ผมปิดเครื่องแล้วถอดปลั๊กเรียบร้อยครับ

phom pit khrueang laeo thot plak riaproi khrap

I've turned the machine off and unplugged it. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

อย่าลืมปิดฝาขวดหลังใช้เสร็จนะคะ

ya luem pit fa khuat lang chai set na kha

Don't forget to close the bottle cap after use. (ordinary polite reminder, female speaker)

These are lexical pairings, not conjugations. ดับไฟ also occurs for extinguishing a flame or putting out a light, whereas ปิดไฟ is the ordinary instruction to operate a light switch.

💡
Learn ปิด with its object. English “close a file,” “turn off a lamp,” and “shut a gate” use different verb phrases, but Thai naturally has ปิดไฟล์, ปิดโคมไฟ, and ปิดประตูรั้ว.

Shops, events, access, and registration

The order distinguishes an agent closing a business from the business's schedule or state. เจ้าของปิดร้านสองทุ่ม presents the owner's action. ร้านปิดสองทุ่ม gives the closing time. Context decides whether closure is routine, temporary, or permanent; ปิด alone does not encode that distinction.

ครัวปิดสามทุ่ม แต่นั่งในร้านได้ถึงสี่ทุ่มค่ะ

khrua pit sam thum tae nang nai ran dai thueng si thum kha

The kitchen closes at nine, but customers can stay in the restaurant until ten. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)

ประธานปิดประชุมเวลาเกือบห้าโมงครับ

prathan pit prachum wela kueap ha mong khrap

The chair closed the meeting at nearly five. (formal-neutral workplace report, male speaker)

ปิดรับสมัคร means stop accepting applications; ปิดรับลงทะเบียน ends acceptance of registrations. As a short status label, ปิดลงทะเบียน also means registration is closed. These frames may be elaborated: ปิดรับสมัครพนักงาน, ปิดรับลงทะเบียนออนไลน์. Do not assume that ปิด means the physical closing of a portal in such frames.

หลักสูตรนี้จะปิดรับสมัครวันศุกร์ค่ะ

laksut ni cha pit rap samak wan suk kha

Applications for this course will close on Friday. (formal-neutral informational speech, female voice)

ระบบจะปิดรับลงทะเบียนออนไลน์ตอนเที่ยงคืนครับ

rabop cha pit rap long thabian onlai ton thiang khuen khrap

The system will close online registration at midnight. (neutral informational speech, male voice)

Physical and abstract obstruction also use ปิด: ปิดทางเข้า blocks or closes an entrance, ปิดหน้า covers the face, and ปิดตา closes or covers the eyes. The object and setting decide which physical relation is intended.

ตำรวจปิดทางเข้าด้านเหนือเพราะมีน้ำท่วมค่ะ

tamruat pit thang khao dan nuea phro mi nam thuam kha

The police closed the north entrance because of flooding. (neutral news-style report, female voice)

Action versus closed state

พนักงานปิดประตู has an agent acting on an object. ประตูปิดอยู่ puts the door first and describes its continuing closed state. Thai does not need English be or a participial suffix. ปิดแล้ว can report that the action has occurred or that something is now closed; ปิดอยู่ explicitly profiles the continuing state.

ห้องเก็บเอกสารปิดอยู่ครับ ต้องขอกุญแจก่อน

hong kep ekkasan pit yu khrap tong kho kunchae kon

The document room is closed; you have to ask for the key first. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

แม่บ้านกำลังปิดประตูระเบียงค่ะ

mae ban kamlang pit pratu rabiang kha

The housekeeper is closing the balcony door. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The resultant-state guide develops this alternation. The crucial distinction is constructional: the same lexical item can name the change and the state resulting from it.

💡
To describe a state, put the affected item first: ไฟปิดอยู่, ประตูปิดอยู่. To describe an action, put the actor first and the affected item after ปิด: เขาปิดไฟ, เขาปิดประตู.

ปิดลง and ปิดบัง

Postverbal ลง can present a business, service, publication, or institution ceasing operation: กิจการปิดตัวลง “the business shut down.” It is not the ordinary way to tell someone to close a door; ปิดประตู is enough. With a gradual restriction, ลง can also contribute a downward or concluding development, but the collocation and subject matter must license it.

โรงงานแห่งนั้นปิดตัวลงหลังเปิดมาหลายสิบปีครับ

rongngan haeng nan pit tua long lang poet ma lai sip pi khrap

That factory shut down after operating for several decades. (neutral-careful report, male speaker)

ปิดบัง is the established verb “conceal, hide information.” It takes what is concealed directly, often followed by จาก + person for the person kept unaware. Its meaning is lexical; บัง is not a freely replaceable result predicate here.

บริษัทไม่ควรปิดบังข้อมูลสำคัญจากลูกค้าค่ะ

borisat mai khuan pit bang khomun samkhan chak luk kha kha

A company should not conceal important information from customers. (formal-neutral evaluative speech, female speaker)

Other common collocations include ปิดเสียง “mute,” ปิดกั้น “block/restrict,” ปิดท้าย “bring to a close,” and ปิดผนึก “seal” (formal-neutral). They must be learned with their own participant frames.

Negation and possibility

ไม่ได้ปิด denies that a closing event happened. ปิดไม่ได้ presents closing or turning off as impossible or disallowed. ไม่ปิด is plain event negation and may describe a habit, refusal, or planned non-action depending on context.

เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้ปิดทางเข้า เจ้าหน้าที่อีกคนเป็นคนปิดครับ

muea chao phom mai dai pit thang khao chaonathi ik khon pen khon pit khrap

I didn't close the entrance this morning; another officer did. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; correction of responsibility)

วาล์วตัวนี้ปิดไม่ได้ค่ะ กรุณาเรียกช่าง

wao tua ni pit mai dai kha karuna riak chang

This valve can't be closed; please call a technician. (ordinary polite safety instruction, female speaker)

The postverbal order matters. English couldn't close can describe either a failed event or inability, but Thai explicitly contrasts the scopes. See negative scope for more predicate-chain contrasts.

Common Mistakes

1. Inserting เป็น before a closed state

❌ หน้าต่างเป็นปิดอยู่ครับ

Incorrect—ปิด already serves as the state predicate; เป็น is not required.

✅ หน้าต่างห้องด้านในปิดอยู่ครับ

natang hong dan nai pit yu khrap

The window in the inner room is closed. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Reversing plain negation

❌ วันนี้ร้านปิดไม่ค่ะ

Incorrect plain negation—ไม่ precedes ปิด.

✅ วันนี้ร้านไม่ปิดค่ะ

wan ni ran mai pit kha

The shop isn't closing today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Using ปิดลง for an ordinary physical command

❌ ช่วยปิดลงประตูให้หน่อยครับ

Incorrect neutral order and collocation—ปิดลง is not the ordinary transitive command for a door.

✅ ช่วยปิดประตูห้องครัวให้หน่อยครับ

chuai pit pratu hong khrua hai noi khrap

Please close the kitchen door for me. (ordinary polite request, male speaker)

4. Separating the lexical verb ปิดบัง

❌ เขาปิดข้อมูลบังจากทีมค่ะ

Incorrect—the established verb ‘conceal’ is ปิดบัง and directly precedes its object.

✅ เขาปิดบังข้อมูลจากทีมค่ะ

khao pit bang khomun chak thim kha

He concealed information from the team. (neutral-careful workplace report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • The object selects the conventional sense of ปิด: closure, deactivation, ending operations, blocking, or covering.
  • agent + ปิด + object presents an action; object + ปิดอยู่ presents a continuing closed state.
  • ปิดลง marks cessation in suitable collocations; ปิดบัง is the lexical verb “conceal.”
  • ไม่ได้ปิด denies an event, while ปิดไม่ได้ denies possibility or permission. ปิด itself never changes form.
