Thai เปิด is the invariant verb used for opening a door or container, turning on many devices, beginning access or operations, and establishing an open state. Its English translation changes with the object: เปิดประตู “open the door,” เปิดไฟ “turn on the light,” เปิดร้าน “open the shop,” and เปิดบัญชี “open an account.” The Thai headword itself does not conjugate.
What the object contributes
The noun following เปิด selects a conventional interpretation. With a door, lid, window, book, or package, physical access is created. With a light, air conditioner, television, or computer, a device or function is activated. Learners must acquire these pairings; there is no single physical definition that predicts every collocation.
| Frame | Usual interpretation | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| เปิด + physical object | open it | เปิดหน้าต่าง |
| เปิด + device/function | turn it on | เปิดเครื่องปรับอากาศ |
| เปิด + business/account/event | begin operation, access, or proceedings | เปิดร้าน / เปิดบัญชี |
| เปิดให้ + participant + event | make access or action available | เปิดให้ประชาชนเข้าชม |
| subject + เปิดอยู่ | be in an open/operating state | ประตูเปิดอยู่ |
| เปิดได้ / เปิดไม่ได้ | opening is possible / impossible or permitted / barred | ไฟล์นี้เปิดไม่ได้ |

phom poet klong laeo phop wa kaeo khang nai taek khrap
I opened the box and found that the glass inside was broken. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
English uses particles in turn on and sometimes a completely different verb in start the computer. Thai conventionally extends เปิด to activation. This does not make every English start an instance of เปิด: เริ่มทำงาน means begin working, while เปิดคอมพิวเตอร์ means turn the computer on.
Businesses, events, accounts, and classes
With a business, the order distinguishes an agent's action from the business state. เจ้าของเปิดร้านตอนแปดโมง says the owner opens the shop; ร้านเปิดตอนแปดโมง says the shop opens/is open from eight, depending context. เปิดงาน and เปิดประชุม are (formal-neutral) verbs for commencing an event or meeting. เปิดบัญชี establishes an account. Educational institutions may เปิดสอนวิชา “offer a course,” while a term or institution may เปิดเรียน “open for classes/begin the term.”
ร้านกาแฟข้างสถานีเปิดเจ็ดโมงทุกวันค่ะ
ran kafae khang sathani poet chet mong thuk wan kha
The coffee shop beside the station opens at seven every day. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ธนาคารให้ลูกค้าเปิดบัญชีผ่านแอปได้ครับ
thanakhan hai luk kha poet banchi phan aep dai khrap
The bank allows customers to open accounts through the app. (ordinary polite informational speech, male speaker)
ประธานจะเปิดประชุมหลังทุกคนมาถึงค่ะ
prathan cha poet prachum lang thuk khon ma thueng kha
The chair will open the meeting after everyone arrives. (formal-neutral workplace report, female speaker)
ภาคหน้ามหาวิทยาลัยจะเปิดสอนวิชานี้อีกครั้งครับ
phak na mahawitthayalai cha poet son wicha ni ik khrang khrap
Next term the university will offer this course again. (neutral academic-register report, male speaker)
These are lexical collocations. เปิดสอน does not mean that สอน is an English infinitive “to teach”; the adjacent predicates jointly present the institution's offering of instruction.
เปิดให้: creating access or availability
เปิดให้ + participant + event means make an event or access available to that participant. The participant follows ให้ and becomes the understood actor of the next predicate: เปิดให้นักเรียนใช้ “open it for students to use.” If no participant is stated, เปิดให้ใช้ means make it available for use to the understood group.
พิพิธภัณฑ์เปิดให้ประชาชนเข้าชมฟรีวันอาทิตย์ค่ะ
phiphitthaphan poet hai prachachon khao chom fri wan athit kha
The museum opens to the public for free visits on Sundays. (neutral public-information register, female voice)
ห้องนี้เปิดให้จองล่วงหน้าได้หนึ่งเดือนครับ
hong ni poet hai chong luang na dai nueng duean khrap
This room is made available for booking one month in advance. (ordinary polite informational speech, male speaker)
Here ให้ introduces the party or purpose licensed by the opening. It does not mean physical giving. The broader ให้ reference compares transfer, beneficiary, and causee frames.
Action versus resultant state
พนักงานเปิดประตู is an action with an agent and affected object. ประตูเปิดอยู่ has the door as subject/topic and describes the continuing open state. Thai needs no form of English be and no passive participle: เปิด itself can participate in both constructions, while order and อยู่ distinguish the readings.
ประตูด้านข้างยังเปิดอยู่ค่ะ เข้าออกทางนั้นได้
pratu dan khang yang poet yu kha khao ok thang nan dai
The side door is still open; you can enter and leave that way. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)
พนักงานกำลังเปิดประตูด้านหน้าให้ผู้โดยสารครับ
phanak ngan kamlang poet pratu dan na hai phu doisan khrap
The employee is opening the front door for the passengers. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
เปิดแล้ว is context-sensitive. With a shop it can mean the shop is now open; with an agent it can report that the opening action has occurred. เปิดอยู่ explicitly profiles the continuing state or operation. See resultant states for this action-state alternation.
เปิดได้, เปิดไม่ได้, and negation scope
Postverbal ได้ presents successful opening, possibility, or permission. กล่องนี้เปิดได้ may mean the box can be opened; วันนี้เปิดร้านได้ may mean permission or circumstances allow opening. Context determines the source of possibility. เปิดไม่ได้ denies that possibility. By contrast, ไม่ได้เปิด denies that the opening event occurred.
ไฟล์แนบนี้เปิดไม่ได้ครับ ระบบแจ้งว่ารหัสผิด
fai naep ni poet mai dai khrap rabop chaeng wa rahat phit
This attachment can't be opened; the system says the password is wrong. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
เมื่อเช้าฉันไม่ได้เปิดร้านเพราะไฟดับค่ะ
muea chao chan mai dai poet ran phro fai dap kha
This morning I didn't open the shop because the power was out. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; event denial)
The order ไม่เปิด normally means not open, refuse to open, or habitually not open. It is not built with an English auxiliary do.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ได้ครับ ผมจะไปเปิดให้เดี๋ยวนี้
dai khrap phom cha pai poet hai diao ni
Certainly. I'll go open it for you now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting เป็น before the open state
❌ ประตูเป็นเปิดอยู่ค่ะ
Incorrect—เปิด is already the state predicate here; เป็น is not an English-style copula.
✅ ประตูห้องเก็บของเปิดอยู่ค่ะ
pratu hong kep khong poet yu kha
The storeroom door is open. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Reversing the subject and predicate in the state frame
❌ เปิดอยู่หน้าต่างบานนี้ครับ
Incorrect neutral order for identifying which window is open.
✅ หน้าต่างบานนี้เปิดอยู่ครับ
natang ban ni poet yu khrap
This window is open. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Confusing an event that did not happen with impossibility
❌ เมื่อคืนร้านเปิดไม่ได้ค่ะ
Wrong scope for the intended simple report ‘the shop was not opened’; this says opening was impossible.
✅ เมื่อคืนเจ้าของไม่ได้เปิดร้านค่ะ
muea khuen chao khong mai dai poet ran kha
The owner didn't open the shop last night. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
4. Moving plain negation after เปิด
❌ วันนี้เขาเปิดแอร์ไม่ครับ
Incorrect plain negation—ไม่ precedes เปิด; เปิดไม่ได้ would instead mean cannot turn it on.
✅ วันนี้เขาไม่เปิดแอร์ครับ
wan ni khao mai poet ae khrap
He isn't turning on the air conditioner today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- The object selects the conventional sense of เปิด: physical opening, activation, business operation, account creation, or commencement.
- เปิดให้... makes access or an event available to a participant.
- agent + เปิด + object presents an action; object + เปิดอยู่ presents a continuing resultant state.
- ไม่ได้เปิด denies an event, while เปิดไม่ได้ denies successful or permitted opening. เปิด itself never conjugates.
