ตอบ: answer

Thai ตอบ is the invariant verb “answer” or “reply.” Its object can be the question answered, the person addressed, or a message that receives a reply. A ว่า clause gives the content of the answer. English often distinguishes answer someone, answer a question, and reply to a message with different prepositions; Thai relies mainly on the noun after ตอบ and on compounds such as ตอบกลับ.

Questions, people, and content

The most transparent frame is ตอบ + คำถาม “answer a question.” A person can also follow directly: ตอบครู, ตอบลูกค้า, ตอบเขา. When both a person and full content appear, ตอบ + person + ว่า + clause keeps the addressee before the response.

นักเรียนตอบคำถามแรกได้ถูกต้องค่ะ

nakrian top khamtham raek dai thuktong kha

The student answered the first question correctly. (ordinary polite instructional report, female speaker)

ผู้จัดการยังไม่ว่างตอบลูกค้าครับ

phuchatkan yang mai wang top luk kha khrap

The manager isn't free to answer the customer yet. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

ฉันตอบเขาว่าจะส่งเอกสารก่อนเที่ยงค่ะ

chan top khao wa cha song ekkasan kon thiang kha

I answered him that I would send the documents before noon. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

In the last example, จะ belongs to the reported plan. It is not a future conjugation of ตอบ. The response event itself is located by context.

💡
When both roles are explicit, put the respondent's addressee before ว่า and the content after it: ตอบลูกค้าว่า.... Do not translate English to into an extra preposition before a simple addressee.

Replying to messages: ตอบ and ตอบกลับ

With communication objects, ตอบข้อความ, ตอบอีเมล, and ตอบจดหมาย are ordinary. ตอบกลับ makes the return direction explicit: “reply back.” It is useful in service and digital contexts, but กลับ is not obligatory every time English says reply. A person may be introduced through the surrounding context or in ตอบเขากลับไปว่า....

ผมอ่านอีเมลแล้วจะตอบกลับภายในวันนี้ครับ

phom an imen laeo cha top klap phainai wan ni khrap

I've read the email and will reply by the end of today. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

ทำไมเธอยังไม่ตอบข้อความฉันคะ

thammai thoe yang mai top khokhwam chan kha

Why haven't you replied to my message yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ฝ่ายบริการตอบกลับมาว่าจะคืนเงินให้ครับ

fai borikan top klap ma wa cha khuen ngoen hai khrap

Customer service replied that they would issue a refund. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

The directionals in ตอบกลับมา are viewpoint-sensitive: กลับ presents a response, and มา presents it as reaching the current viewpoint. They are adjacent predicates, not English infinitives or suffixes.

Telephone calls use a different collocation: Thai normally has รับโทรศัพท์ or รับสาย “answer a call,” not the English-calqued ตอบโทรศัพท์.

คำตอบ and established collocations

คำตอบ is the noun “answer.” It can be correct, wrong, clear, or incomplete: คำตอบถูก, คำตอบผิด, คำตอบชัดเจน. It is related to ตอบ but is not a conjugated form. Other established combinations include ตอบรับ “accept/respond affirmatively,” ตอบปฏิเสธ “reply with a refusal” (formal-neutral), and ตอบแทน “repay/reciprocate,” whose lexical meaning must be learned as a whole.

คำตอบของข้อนี้อยู่หน้าถัดไปค่ะ

khamtop khong kho ni yu na that pai kha

The answer to this item is on the next page. (ordinary polite instructional speech, female speaker)

บริษัทตอบรับคำเชิญเข้าร่วมงานแล้วครับ

borisat top rap kham choen khao ruam ngan laeo khrap

The company has accepted the invitation to participate. (formal-neutral workplace report, male speaker)

เขาตอบปฏิเสธอย่างสุภาพค่ะ

khao top patiset yang suphap kha

He replied with a polite refusal. (formal-neutral report, female speaker)

These collocations are not freely interchangeable. ตอบรับคำเชิญ means accept an invitation; ตอบคำเชิญ merely means respond to it and does not specify acceptance.

Ability, failure, and negation scope

Compare ไม่ได้ตอบ with ตอบไม่ได้. Preverbal ไม่ได้ตอบ denies that answering occurred or corrects an assumption. Postverbal ตอบไม่ได้ presents answering as impossible, whether because the speaker lacks knowledge, permission, or sufficient information. English couldn't answer can correspond to either, so choose by scope.

เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้ตอบข้อความเพราะอยู่ในห้องประชุมครับ

muea chao phom mai dai top khokhwam phro yu nai hong prachum khrap

This morning I didn't reply to the message because I was in a meeting room. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; event denial)

ข้อมูลยังไม่ครบค่ะ ตอนนี้ตอบไม่ได้

khomun yang mai khrop kha ton ni top mai dai

The information is still incomplete, so I can't answer right now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; inability)

Plain ไม่ตอบ denies, refuses, or describes a habit of not answering according to context. It does not need an English-style auxiliary corresponding to do.

The negative-scope guide develops the contrast between preverbal event denial and postverbal impossibility.

💡
Use ไม่ได้ตอบ when the response event did not happen; use ตอบไม่ได้ when producing an answer is not possible. The position of ไม่ and ได้ changes their scope, even though ตอบ itself remains unchanged.

An invariant-form matrix

ตอบ can denote a bounded response event, so กำลัง is natural when someone is in the process of answering a question or message. แล้ว marks the response as now supplied; a separate time phrase can locate it in the past.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation
past contextเมื่อวานผมตอบจดหมายเมื่อวาน locates the unchanged verb earlier
ongoingฉันกำลังตอบแบบสอบถามกำลัง presents answering in progress
completed responseเขาตอบคำถามแล้วแล้ว presents the response as supplied
future planพวกเราจะตอบพรุ่งนี้จะ and context present a later response
negativeเขาไม่ตอบเรื่องเงินไม่ before ตอบ denies the event

ฉันกำลังตอบแบบสอบถามของโรงพยาบาลอยู่ค่ะ

chan kamlang top baep soptham khong rongphayaban yu kha

I'm filling in the hospital's questionnaire right now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

พวกเราจะตอบข้อเสนอภายในวันจันทร์ครับ

phuak rao cha top khosanoe phainai wan chan khrap

We'll respond to the proposal by Monday. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

After a question is prominent, the object can be omitted: ตอบแล้วค่ะ “I've answered.” After an email is prominent, ยังไม่ได้ตอบครับ naturally retains that email as the understood object. Omission depends on recoverability, not random pronoun deletion.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ฝ่ายบัญชีตอบคำถามเรื่องใบแจ้งหนี้หรือยังคะ

fai banchi top khamtham rueang bai chaeng ni rue yang kha

Has accounting answered the question about the invoice yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ตอบแล้วครับ เขาขอเลขที่ใบสั่งซื้อเพิ่ม

top laeo khrap khao kho lek thi bai sang sue phoem

They have. They asked for the purchase-order number as well. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; question omitted recoverably)

ช่วยตอบกลับไปว่าฉันจะส่งให้บ่ายนี้นะคะ

chuai top klap pai wa chan cha song hai bai ni na kha

Please reply that I'll send it this afternoon. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ได้ครับ ผมจะตอบเดี๋ยวนี้

dai khrap phom cha top diao ni

Certainly. I'll reply now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding an English-style preposition before คำถาม

❌ ผมตอบกับคำถามข้อนี้ครับ

Incorrect neutral frame—ตอบ takes คำถาม directly.

✅ ผมตอบคำถามข้อนี้ครับ

phom top khamtham kho ni khrap

I'm answering this question. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Putting the content before its addressee

❌ ฉันตอบว่าจะส่งเอกสารพรุ่งนี้ลูกค้าค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—the addressee belongs before ว่า and its content clause.

✅ ฉันตอบลูกค้าว่าจะส่งเอกสารพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ

chan top luk kha wa cha song ekkasan phrung ni kha

I answered the customer that I would send the documents tomorrow. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

3. Confusing event denial with inability

❌ ตอนนี้ข้อมูลไม่ครบ ฉันไม่ได้ตอบค่ะ

Wrong scope for the intended meaning ‘I cannot answer’; ไม่ได้ตอบ instead denies that an answer occurred.

✅ ตอนนี้ข้อมูลไม่ครบ ฉันตอบไม่ได้ค่ะ

ton ni khomun mai khrop chan top mai dai kha

The information is incomplete, so I can't answer right now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

4. Moving plain negation after the message

❌ เขาตอบข้อความผมไม่ครับ

Incorrect neutral negation—ไม่ precedes ตอบ.

✅ เขาไม่ตอบข้อความผมครับ

khao mai top khokhwam phom khrap

He isn't replying to my message. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ตอบ + question/person/message identifies what or whom the response addresses; ตอบ + person + ว่า... gives content.
  • ตอบกลับ makes return direction explicit, but plain ตอบ is enough with many messages.
  • คำตอบ, ตอบรับ, and ตอบปฏิเสธ are established noun and collocation patterns, not conjugated forms.
  • ตอบ remains unchanged; time, aspect, omission, and the scope contrast ไม่ได้ตอบ / ตอบไม่ได้ build the full meaning.
