Thai ถาม is the invariant verb “ask” when someone seeks information. The person questioned can follow it directly, while the topic or question comes afterward: ถามพนักงานเรื่องราคา, ถามพนักงานว่าราคาเท่าไร. This differs from English, which often inserts ask about, ask for, or ask someone to. Thai chooses a frame according to whether the speaker wants information, is looking for someone or something, or requests an action.
Addressee, topic, and question content
The most productive full frame is questioner + ถาม + addressee + question/content. A topic commonly uses เรื่อง + noun. A full content question commonly follows ว่า.
| Frame | Function | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| ถาม + person + เรื่อง + topic | ask someone about a topic | ถามครูเรื่องการบ้าน |
| ถาม + person + ว่า + question | ask someone a content question | ถามคนขับว่ารถจอดที่ไหน |
| ถามหา + person/thing | ask for or try to locate | ถามหาผู้จัดการ |
| ถามถึง + person/topic | ask about or inquire after | ถามถึงอาการคุณแม่ |
| สอบถาม + information/topic | make an inquiry | สอบถามรายละเอียด |
| ขอ + thing/event | request rather than seek information | ขอเปลี่ยนห้อง |
ผมถามพนักงานเรื่องค่าจอดรถครับ
phom tham phanak ngan rueang kha chot rot khrap
I asked the employee about the parking fee. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ผมถามหมอว่าอาการแบบนี้อันตรายไหมครับ
phom tham mo wa akan baep ni antarai mai khrap
I asked the doctor whether symptoms like these were dangerous. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
The addressee can be omitted when the setting identifies them: ถามเรื่องเวลาเปิดร้านแล้วค่ะ means “I've asked about the opening time.” Conversely, the question can be omitted when it has already been stated: เดี๋ยวผมถามพนักงานให้ครับ means the speaker will ask the employee on someone else's behalf.
เรื่องรถเที่ยวสุดท้าย เดี๋ยวผมถามคนขับให้ครับ
rueang rot thiao sutthai diao phom tham khon khap hai khrap
About the last bus, I'll ask the driver for you. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
This omission is discourse-based. It does not mean that every participant can disappear without a recoverable reference. The argument-omission guide explains how a conversation supplies understood roles.
Embedded questions after ว่า
After ถาม...ว่า, the following clause has ordinary Thai question structure. A question word stays where the missing information belongs: รถจะมาเมื่อไร, เขาพักที่ไหน, ใครจะไปรับ. Thai does not apply the English inversion seen in When will the bus come?, and reported questions do not acquire a special tense form.
ช่วยถามเขาว่าพรุ่งนี้จะมาถึงกี่โมงให้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
chuai tham khao wa phrung ni cha ma thueng ki mong hai noi dai mai kha
Could you ask him what time he'll arrive tomorrow for me? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ลูกค้าถามว่าต้องส่งเอกสารไปที่ไหนครับ
luk kha tham wa tong song ekkasan pai thi nai khrap
The customer asked where the documents had to be sent. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ครูถามว่าใครยังไม่ได้ส่งการบ้านค่ะ
khru tham wa khrai yang mai dai song kanban kha
The teacher asked who still hadn't submitted the homework. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
In short conversational reports, ว่า can sometimes be absent when the clause boundary remains clear: เขาถามคุณชื่ออะไร may be understood as “He asked what your name was.” Do not generalize that omission to every question phrase. เขาถามคุณกี่โมง is easily read as “At what time did he ask you?”, so เขาถามคุณว่ากี่โมง is clearer for “He asked you, ‘What time?’” In a longer report, ว่า likewise marks the boundary between the addressee and the reported question. See embedded questions for the internal order of question-word clauses.
ถามหา, ถามถึง, and สอบถาม
ถามหา + person/thing presents a search through asking. At a reception desk, มีคนมาถามหาคุณ means someone came asking for you. With an item, it can mean asking where it is or whether it is available. It is not the general way to mark a topic.
เมื่อเช้ามีลูกค้ามาถามหาผู้จัดการค่ะ
muea chao mi luk kha ma tham ha phuchatkan kha
A customer came asking for the manager this morning. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
ถามถึง means ask about or inquire after a person or matter already in view. It often conveys concern when the object is someone's health or situation. สอบถาม is (formal-neutral/service) “inquire”; it is common in notices, customer service, administration, and careful workplace speech. It can take ข้อมูล, รายละเอียด, or เรื่อง... directly.
คุณยายถามถึงอาการของพ่อทุกวันครับ
khun yai tham thueng akan khong pho thuk wan khrap
Grandma asks about Dad's condition every day. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ติดต่อเคาน์เตอร์นี้เพื่อสอบถามรายละเอียดการสมัครค่ะ
titto khaotoe ni phuea soptham raiat kan samak kha
Contact this counter to inquire about the application details. (formal-neutral service instruction, female voice)
สอบถาม is not a separate formal grammar. It is a register-sensitive lexical choice within the same Central Thai system. In a relaxed conversation, ถามรายละเอียด is usually sufficient.
Asking for information versus requesting something
English ask covers both “ask a question” and “ask someone to act.” Thai normally uses ถาม for information and ขอ for a thing, permission, or requested event. ขอถาม... literally requests permission to ask and is a polite discourse opener; the actual information question still uses ถาม.
ขอถามหน่อยค่ะ ห้องน้ำอยู่ชั้นไหนคะ
kho tham noi kha hong nam yu chan nai kha
May I ask—what floor is the restroom on? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ผมขอเลื่อนนัดเป็นวันศุกร์ได้ไหมครับ
phom kho luean nat pen wan suk dai mai khrap
Could I move the appointment to Friday? (ordinary polite request, male speaker; ขอ requests an action)
The second sentence is not naturally replaced by ถามเลื่อนนัด: the goal is a changed appointment, not information about one.
The unchanged verb in time and aspect
ถาม remains unchanged with every subject and time reference. Because asking is an event, กำลังถาม is natural when the questioning is in progress. ถามแล้ว says the question has now been asked; it does not itself say whether anyone answered.
| Environment | Thai pattern | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อวานผมถามเจ้าหน้าที่ | เมื่อวาน locates the event earlier |
| ongoing | ฉันกำลังถามเรื่องประกัน | กำลัง presents questioning in progress |
| completed asking | เขาถามผู้จัดการแล้ว | แล้ว presents the asking as accomplished |
| future plan | พวกเราจะถามราคาอีกครั้ง | จะ presents a later planned inquiry |
| negative | เขาไม่ถามเหตุผล | ไม่ before ถาม denies the event |
ตอนที่ฉันโทรไป เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังถามข้อมูลจากลูกค้าคนอื่นอยู่ค่ะ
ton thi chan tho pai chaonathi kamlang tham khomun chak luk kha khon uen yu kha
When I called, the officer was asking another customer for information. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
พวกเราจะถามราคาห้องประชุมอีกครั้งพรุ่งนี้ครับ
phuak rao cha tham rakha hong prachum ik khrang phrung ni khrap
We'll ask about the meeting-room price again tomorrow. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
คุณถามฝ่ายทะเบียนเรื่องเอกสารแล้วหรือยังคะ
khun tham fai thabian rueang ekkasan laeo rue yang kha
Have you asked the registrar's office about the documents yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)
ถามแล้วครับ เขาบอกว่าใช้สำเนาบัตรหนึ่งชุด
tham laeo khrap khao bok wa chai samnao bat nueng chut
I have. They said one set of card copies is required. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แล้วถามหรือยังคะว่าต้องยื่นภายในวันไหน
laeo tham rue yang kha wa tong yuen phainai wan nai
And have you asked by what date it has to be submitted? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังครับ เดี๋ยวผมโทรไปถามอีกที
yang khrap diao phom tho pai tham ik thi
Not yet. I'll call and ask again in a moment. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English inversion into an embedded question
❌ ผมถามว่ากี่โมงรถจะออกครับ
Incorrect for the neutral embedded question—the time phrase stays where it belongs in รถจะออกกี่โมง.
✅ ผมถามว่ารถจะออกกี่โมงครับ
phom tham wa rot cha ok ki mong khrap
I asked what time the vehicle would leave. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
2. Using ถาม for a requested action
❌ ฉันถามพนักงานเปลี่ยนห้องค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘I asked to change rooms’; this wording does not clearly request the action.
✅ ฉันขอให้พนักงานเปลี่ยนห้องให้ค่ะ
chan kho hai phanak ngan plian hong hai kha
I asked the employee to change the room for me. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
3. Using ถามหา for an ordinary topic
❌ เขาถามหาผมเรื่องงบประมาณครับ
Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘asked me about the budget’; ถามหา presents searching or asking for someone.
✅ เขาถามผมเรื่องงบประมาณครับ
khao tham phom rueang ngoppraman khrap
He asked me about the budget. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
4. Moving plain negation after the question
❌ เธอถามทางกลับบ้านไม่ค่ะ
Incorrect neutral negation—ไม่ precedes ถาม.
✅ เธอไม่ถามทางกลับบ้านค่ะ
thoe mai tham thang klap ban kha
She didn't ask for directions home. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; time comes from context)
Key Takeaways
- Use ถาม + person + เรื่อง... for a topic and ถาม + person + ว่า + question for full content.
- ถามหา seeks or locates; ถามถึง asks about or inquires after; สอบถาม is formal-neutral/service vocabulary.
- ถาม seeks information, while ขอ requests a thing, permission, or action.
- The verb never conjugates. Time, aspect, negation, and discourse supply the interpretation around it.
