Speech and Thought Frames with ว่า

Thai ว่า introduces the content of speaking, thinking, believing, asking, or answering: เขาบอกว่าพรุ่งนี้จะมา “he said he would come tomorrow,” ฉันคิดว่าฝนจะตก “I think it will rain,” พนักงานถามว่าจองไว้ไหม “the employee asked whether we had booked.” The verb before ว่า establishes the reporting or mental frame; the material after it is a proposition or reported question.

Unlike English, Thai does not backshift an embedded verb into a past form simply because บอก or ถาม refers to earlier speech. Time comes from adverbs, aspect, viewpoint, and context. Pronouns and deictic expressions may still need adjustment when the reporter's “I,” “here,” or “tomorrow” differs from the original speaker's.

Core speech and thought frames

FrameFunctionModel
พูดว่า + contentsay/utter that...พูดว่าจะกลับเร็ว
บอก + addressee + ว่า + contenttell someone that...บอกทีมว่าลูกค้ารออยู่
คิด/เชื่อว่า + contentthink/believe that...คิดว่าน่าจะทัน
ถาม + addressee + ว่า + questionask someone whether/when/why...ถามพนักงานว่าเปิดกี่โมง
ตอบว่า + contentanswer that...ตอบว่ายังไม่ทราบ
บอก + addressee + ให้ + eventdirect someone to actบอกทีมให้รอก่อน

The last row is a crucial contrast: ว่า introduces information, whereas directive ให้ introduces an event for the addressee to perform.

ผู้จัดการบอกทีมว่าลูกค้ายังรอคำตอบอยู่ครับ

phu chatkan bok thim wa luk kha yang ro khamtop yu khrap

The manager told the team that the customer was still waiting for an answer. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

ฉันคิดว่ารถน่าจะติดช่วงเย็นค่ะ

chan khit wa rot na cha tit chuang yen kha

I think traffic will probably be heavy in the evening. (ordinary polite opinion, female speaker)

เขาตอบว่ายังไม่ทราบวันส่งของครับ

khao top wa yang mai sap wan song khong khrap

He answered that he still did not know the delivery date. (formal-polite report, male speaker)

ว่า does not change the forms รอ, ติด, or ทราบ. It marks a boundary between the framing predicate and its content.

💡
After ว่า, read a complete proposition: identify its subject, predicate, time, and polarity. Do not treat ว่า as an English infinitive marker or attach the following verb directly to the reporting verb.

Direct quotation and indirect report

ว่า can precede represented words or an indirect paraphrase. Quotation marks make direct wording explicit in writing; speech relies on voice, pause, and context.

นิดบอกว่า “เดี๋ยวโทรกลับนะคะ”

nit bok wa diao tho klap na kha

Nit said, ‘I'll call back in a moment.’ (direct quotation, female quoted speaker)

นิดบอกว่าจะโทรกลับทีหลังค่ะ

nit bok wa cha tho klap thi lang kha

Nit said that she would call back later. (indirect report, female reporter)

The indirect report omits the embedded subject because Nit is the most accessible candidate. This is a discourse inference, not an inviolable control rule. If another person will call, name that person:

นิดบอกว่าพี่ชายจะโทรกลับตอนค่ำค่ะ

nit bok wa phi chai cha tho klap ton kham kha

Nit said that her older brother would call back this evening. (indirect report, female speaker)

Direct quotation preserves the quoted speaker's voice, including นะคะ. Indirect reporting normally adopts the current reporter's perspective and pronoun choices. Thai does not change a verb ending to signal this shift because the verbs have no tense inflection.

No obligatory English-style backshift

If someone spoke yesterday about a meeting today, Thai can state both reference points directly:

เมื่อวานหัวหน้าบอกว่าการประชุมวันนี้ยกเลิกค่ะ

muea wan huana bok wa kan prachum wan ni yokloek kha

Yesterday the supervisor said that today's meeting was canceled. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

เขาบอกว่าตอนนั้นกำลังเดินทางอยู่ครับ

khao bok wa ton nan kamlang doen thang yu khrap

He said that he was traveling at that time. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

The time phrases เมื่อวาน, วันนี้, and ตอนนั้น establish when the speech and embedded situation hold. กำลัง...อยู่ supplies progressive aspect. Nothing backshifts simply to agree with a past reporting verb.

English-speaking learners should nevertheless adjust viewpoint when necessary. A quoted พรุ่งนี้ “tomorrow” may become วันถัดไป “the following day” in a later report if the reporter wants to prevent ambiguity.

วันจันทร์เธอบอกว่าจะส่งเอกสารในวันถัดไปค่ะ

wan chan thoe bok wa cha song ekkasan nai wan that pai kha

On Monday she said she would send the documents the following day. (careful indirect report, female speaker)

This is a deictic clarification, not tense concord.

Reported questions keep Thai question structure

After ถามว่า, a question word stays in its ordinary in-situ position. A yes/no content question can retain ไหม or use another appropriate question frame.

ลูกค้าถามว่าทางร้านจะส่งสินค้าถึงบ้านเมื่อไรค่ะ

luk kha tham wa thang ran cha song sinkha thueng ban muearai kha

The customer asked when the shop would deliver the product to their home. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

ผมถามพนักงานว่าห้องนี้ว่างไหมครับ

phom tham phanak ngan wa hong ni wang mai khrap

I asked the employee whether this room was available. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

เธอถามว่าทำไมเรายังไม่เริ่มค่ะ

thoe tham wa thammai rao yang mai roem kha

She asked why we had not started yet. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Thai does not invert subject and auxiliary as English does, and it does not add a second yes/no particle to a clause already containing ทำไม or เมื่อไร. See reported questions.

When ว่า can be omitted

In conversation, a short, strongly expected report may omit ว่า: เขาบอกพรุ่งนี้จะมา can be understood as “he said he would come tomorrow.” A pause or prosodic boundary helps. Omission is much less safe when an addressee and a new embedded subject could be confused.

เมื่อกี้เขาบอกเดี๋ยวจะกลับมาค่ะ

muea ki khao bok diao cha klap ma kha

He just said he'd be back shortly. (informal conversational report, female speaker; ว่า omitted)

ผู้จัดการบอกว่าลูกค้าจะส่งสัญญาพรุ่งนี้ครับ

phu chatkan bok wa luk kha cha song sanya phrung ni khrap

The manager said that the customer would send the contract tomorrow. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; ว่า retained for clarity)

Without ว่า, ผู้จัดการบอกลูกค้า... first invites the parse “the manager tells the customer...,” making the boundary and participant roles unclear. Retain ว่า in careful writing and whenever it prevents such ambiguity.

💡
Complementizer omission is discourse-sensitive, not random. A short report with an obvious boundary may omit ว่า in conversation; a new embedded subject or competing addressee makes overt ว่า valuable.

Negation on the frame or inside the report

Negation position distinguishes denying the speech/thought act from reporting negative content.

เขาไม่ได้บอกว่าจะลาออกครับ

khao mai dai bok wa cha la ok khrap

He did not say that he would resign. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker; saying denied)

เขาบอกว่าจะไม่ลาออกครับ

khao bok wa cha mai la ok khrap

He said that he would not resign. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; resignation negated)

Thought frames show the same scope distinction:

ฉันไม่คิดว่าเขาจะมาค่ะ

chan mai khit wa khao cha ma kha

I don't think he will come. (ordinary polite opinion, female speaker; matrix stance negated)

ฉันคิดว่าเขาจะไม่มาค่ะ

chan khit wa khao cha mai ma kha

I think he will not come. (ordinary polite opinion, female speaker; arrival negated)

The two may lead to similar expectations, but they are not structurally identical. The first withholds a positive belief; the second asserts a belief in nonarrival.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Colleagues exchange a report and a reported question:

หัวหน้าบอกว่าอย่างไรบ้างคะ

huana bok wa yangrai bang kha

What did the supervisor say? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

บอกว่าลูกค้าจะตอบพรุ่งนี้ครับ

bok wa luk kha cha top phrung ni khrap

He said the customer would answer tomorrow. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; supervisor omitted)

ได้ถามไหมคะว่าต้องแก้อะไร

dai tham mai kha wa tong kae arai

Did you ask what needs to be corrected? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ถามแล้วครับ เขาตอบว่าแก้แค่หน้าแรก

tham laeo khrap khao top wa kae khae na raek

Yes. He answered that only the first page needed correcting. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Omitting ว่า where two participant parses compete

❌ ผู้จัดการบอกลูกค้าจะส่งสัญญาพรุ่งนี้ครับ

Ambiguous for the intended report: ลูกค้า can first be parsed as the person being told.

✅ ผู้จัดการบอกว่าลูกค้าจะส่งสัญญาฉบับใหม่พรุ่งนี้ครับ

phu chatkan bok wa luk kha cha song sanya chabap mai phrung ni khrap

The manager said that the customer would send the new contract tomorrow. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

2. Adding ได้ solely to imitate English backshift

❌ เมื่อวานเขาบอกว่าได้ป่วยค่ะ

Wrong for the intended neutral report ‘he said he was ill’; ได้ adds a different realized/change reading rather than past agreement.

✅ เมื่อวานเขาบอกว่าป่วยและขอพักค่ะ

muea wan khao bok wa puai lae kho phak kha

Yesterday he said he was ill and asked to rest. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

3. Using ว่า for an intended directive

❌ แม่บอกลูกว่าปิดประตูก่อนนอนค่ะ

Incorrect/unclear for the intended instruction; ว่า frames reported content without supplying the embedded actor clearly.

✅ แม่บอกลูกให้ปิดประตูหลังก่อนนอนค่ะ

mae bok luk hai pit pratu lang kon non kha

The mother told her child to close the back door before bed. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Adding ไหม to an embedded question that already has a question word

❌ เขาถามว่าประชุมเริ่มกี่โมงไหมครับ

Incorrect double question marking—กี่โมง already supplies the requested information.

✅ เขาถามว่าการประชุมเริ่มกี่โมงครับ

khao tham wa kan prachum roem ki mong khrap

He asked what time the meeting started. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

5. Leaving a changed embedded actor unexpressed

❌ นิดบอกว่าจะมารับลูกค่ะ

Ambiguous for the intended meaning ‘Nit said her father would pick up the child’; the omitted subject is most readily understood as Nit.

✅ นิดบอกว่าคุณพ่อจะมารับลูกค่ะ

nit bok wa khun pho cha ma rap luk kha

Nit said that her father would pick up the child. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ว่า introduces propositions and reported questions after speech or thought predicates.
  • บอกเขาว่า... reports information; บอกเขาให้ทำ... directs the addressee to act.
  • Thai verbs do not undergo obligatory reported-speech backshift; time and aspect remain independently expressed.
  • Omitted embedded subjects come from discourse, not a rigid control rule; name a different actor.
  • Conversational ว่า omission is possible when the boundary is obvious, but retaining it prevents addressee/content ambiguity.
