Shared Subjects in Control-Like Thai Complements

Thai often places one event predicate directly after a verb of desire, effort, or intention: อยากย้ายบ้าน “want to move house,” พยายามแก้ปัญหา “try to solve the problem,” ตั้งใจส่งงาน “intend to submit the work.” The subject of the first predicate is normally understood as the actor of the following event. No infinitive form or word equivalent to English to marks that relation.

A different participant must be introduced by a construction that licenses it. อยากให้น้องย้ายบ้าน means “want my younger sibling to move,” where น้อง is the understood subject of ย้าย. บอกทีมให้แก้รายงาน identifies the team as addressee and actor of the requested correction. These are lexical Thai complement patterns; calling every one “control” or “raising” as though Thai copied English syntax hides their real differences.

Shared-subject desire, effort, and intention

With อยาก, พยายาม, and ตั้งใจ, an immediately following event normally shares the matrix subject.

ปีหน้าฉันอยากย้ายไปอยู่ใกล้ที่ทำงานค่ะ

pi na chan yak yai pai yu klai thi tham ngan kha

Next year I want to move closer to work. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; speaker moves)

ผมกำลังพยายามแก้ปัญหาเรื่องการชำระเงินอยู่ครับ

phom kamlang phayayam kae panha rueang kan chamra ngoen yu khrap

I'm trying to solve the payment problem. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; speaker solves it)

ทีมตั้งใจส่งงานก่อนกำหนดค่ะ

thim tangchai song ngan kon kamnot kha

The team intends to submit the work ahead of schedule. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; team submits it)

The second verb is not an infinitive: ย้าย, แก้, and ส่ง have exactly the forms they use as independent predicates. The shared actor follows from the lexical relation between wanting, trying, intending, and the event that supplies their content.

💡
After อยาก/พยายาม/ตั้งใจ + event, first assume that the same subject performs both predicates. Introduce another actor overtly when the intended event belongs to someone else.

Different subjects require an embedded participant

อยากให้ + participant + predicate presents a desired situation involving someone or something other than the wanter. ให้ opens the following event and licenses its participant.

ฉันอยากให้น้องย้ายมาอยู่ใกล้กันค่ะ

chan yak hai nong yai ma yu klai kan kha

I want my younger sibling to move closer to me. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; sibling moves)

ผู้จัดการอยากให้ทีมส่งแผนใหม่ภายในวันศุกร์ครับ

phu chatkan yak hai thim song phaen mai phai nai wan suk khrap

The manager wants the team to submit a new plan by Friday. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

Compare the participant structures:

FrameMatrix actorFollowing-event actorCore interpretation
ฉันอยากย้ายบ้านฉันฉันI want to move
ฉันอยากให้น้องย้ายบ้านฉันน้องI want my sibling to move
หัวหน้าบอกทีมให้แก้รายงานหัวหน้าทีมthe supervisor tells the team to revise
ฉันขอให้เพื่อนช่วยตรวจฉันเพื่อนI ask my friend to help check

The noun between ให้ and the following predicate is not merely an object translated by English word order. It participates in the embedded event as its actor or affected subject. The exact force of ให้—allow, cause, direct, arrange—depends on the matrix predicate and relationship.

Telling and requesting establish an addressee actor

Speech-act verbs use distinct complement frames. บอก + addressee + ให้ + event directs the addressee toward an action. ขอให้ + participant + event requests or wishes for that situation.

หัวหน้าบอกทีมให้แก้ตัวเลขหน้าสุดท้ายครับ

huana bok thim hai kae tua lek na sutthai khrap

The supervisor told the team to correct the figures on the last page. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

แม่บอกลูกให้ปิดไฟก่อนออกจากห้องค่ะ

mae bok luk hai pit fai kon ok chak hong kha

The mother told her child to turn off the light before leaving the room. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

ผมขอให้เพื่อนช่วยตรวจจดหมายอีกครั้งครับ

phom kho hai phuean chuai truat chotmai ik khrang khrap

I asked a friend to help check the letter again. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

With บอก, ให้ can be omitted in some familiar directive contexts, especially when intonation and event structure make the addressee's role obvious. Keeping it is a clear and productive B2 model. It cannot be omitted freely from every long or potentially ambiguous frame.

บอก + addressee + ว่า + proposition instead reports information:

หัวหน้าบอกทีมว่าลูกค้าจะมาช้าค่ะ

huana bok thim wa luk kha cha ma cha kha

The supervisor told the team that the customer would arrive late. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; information content)

This does not direct the team to arrive late. ว่า introduces a proposition with ลูกค้า as its overt subject. Compare the fuller treatment of ว่า complements.

💡
Use the material after the addressee to distinguish speech acts: บอกเขาให้ทำ... directs him to act; บอกเขาว่า... tells him that a proposition is true.

Shared subjects do not create an English infinitive category

English marks many controlled complements with to: try to solve, intend to send. Thai juxtaposes predicates and recovers the subject relation. Other adjacent verbs may express motion, aspect, or result, so “the second verb is an infinitive” is not a general Thai analysis.

เราเคยพยายามติดต่อเขาหลายครั้งแล้วค่ะ

rao khoei phayayam titto khao lai khrang laeo kha

We have tried to contact him several times. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

บริษัทตั้งใจจะเปิดสาขาใหม่ปีหน้าครับ

borisat tangchai cha poet sakha mai pi na khrap

The company intends to open a new branch next year. (ordinary polite business report, male speaker)

The experiential marker เคย scopes over trying; prospective จะ frames the planned opening. The matrix and embedded verbs remain unchanged. Their combination does not acquire English nonfinite morphology.

The term “control-like” is deliberately descriptive here. Formal syntactic analyses differ over how Thai juxtaposition, complementation, and serialization should be represented. Learners need the stable generalization: each lexical frame tells you whether the following subject is shared, introduced by ให้, supplied as an addressee, or expressed in a ว่า clause. A formal English raising analysis is neither necessary nor safely transferable.

Negation can target desire, effort, or the embedded event

Placement changes what is rejected:

ผมไม่อยากไปงานเลี้ยงคืนนี้ครับ

phom mai yak pai ngan liang khuen ni khrap

I don't want to go to the party tonight. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; desire negated)

ผมอยากไม่ต้องไปงานเลี้ยงคืนนี้ครับ

phom yak mai tong pai ngan liang khuen ni khrap

I wish I didn't have to go to the party tonight. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; necessity inside the desired event is negated)

ระหว่างประชุมฉันพยายามไม่พูดแทรกค่ะ

rawang prachum chan phayayam mai phut saek kha

During the meeting I tried not to interrupt. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; embedded speaking event negated)

ไม่อยาก denies desire. อยากไม่ต้องไป preserves the wish but makes “not having to go” its content. พยายามไม่พูดแทรก asserts effort toward a negative event. English auxiliary placement cannot be copied mechanically.

Omission and discourse chains

Once the intended task and actor are established, a reply can omit them:

พยายามแก้ไฟล์อยู่หรือเปล่าคะ

phayayam kae fai yu rue plao kha

Are you trying to fix the file? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; addressee omitted)

พยายามอยู่ครับ แต่ยังหาสาเหตุไม่เจอ

phayayam yu khrap tae yang ha sahet mai choe

I'm trying, but I still can't find the cause. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; fixing event omitted)

The second พยายามอยู่ is acceptable because the first turn supplies the project. In isolation, it would leave the intended action unidentified.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

An applicant and an adviser discuss a submission:

ตั้งใจจะส่งใบสมัครเมื่อไรคะ

tangchai cha song bai samak muearai kha

When are you planning to submit the application? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ผมพยายามเตรียมเอกสารให้ครบวันนี้ครับ

phom phayayam triam ekkasan hai khrop wan ni khrap

I'm trying to get all the documents ready today. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

ถ้าติดปัญหา บอกฉันได้เลยนะคะ เดี๋ยวช่วยค่ะ

tha tit panha bok chan dai loei na kha diao chuai kha

If you run into a problem, tell me right away and I'll help. (ordinary polite offer, female speaker)

ขอบคุณครับ ผมจะขอให้ฝ่ายบุคคลตรวจอีกครั้ง

khopkhun khrap phom cha kho hai fai bukkhon truat ik khrang

Thank you. I'll ask Human Resources to check once more. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Inserting เป็น as English infinitive “to”

❌ ฉันอยากเป็นไปเที่ยวทะเลค่ะ

Incorrect—เป็น does not introduce the desired event.

✅ ฉันอยากไปเที่ยวทะเลช่วงหน้าหนาวค่ะ

chan yak pai thiao thale chuang na nao kha

I want to visit the seaside during the cool season. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

2. Repeating the shared subject between predicates

❌ ผมพยายามผมแก้ปัญหานี้ครับ

Incorrect—the same subject is already understood for แก้.

✅ ผมพยายามแก้ปัญหานี้ด้วยตัวเองครับ

phom phayayam kae panha ni duai tua eng khrap

I'm trying to solve this problem myself. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

3. Omitting ให้ when a new actor is intended

❌ ฉันอยากน้องย้ายมาอยู่ใกล้ค่ะ

Incorrect—น้อง cannot simply be inserted as a new subject after อยาก.

✅ ฉันอยากให้น้องสาวย้ายมาอยู่ใกล้ค่ะ

chan yak hai nong sao yai ma yu klai kha

I want my younger sister to move closer. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

4. Using ว่า for an intended directive without framing it

❌ หัวหน้าบอกทีมว่าปิดคอมพิวเตอร์ก่อนกลับครับ

Incorrect/unclear for the intended command; ว่า normally introduces reported content, but the embedded actor is missing.

✅ หัวหน้าบอกทีมให้ปิดคอมพิวเตอร์ก่อนกลับครับ

huana bok thim hai pit khomphiotoe kon klap khrap

The supervisor told the team to turn off the computers before leaving. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

5. Putting English auxiliary do inside the complement

❌ ฉันพยายามทำไม่พูดแทรกค่ะ

Incorrect—ทำ is not an English auxiliary for negative infinitives.

✅ ฉันพยายามไม่พูดแทรกเวลาคนอื่นตอบค่ะ

chan phayayam mai phut saek wela khon uen top kha

I try not to interrupt when someone else is answering. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • อยาก/พยายาม/ตั้งใจ + event normally share one subject across both predicates.
  • อยากให้ + participant + event introduces a different actor for the desired situation.
  • บอก + addressee + ให้ + event directs; บอก + addressee + ว่า + proposition reports information.
  • Scope distinguishes ไม่อยากไป, อยากไม่ต้องไป, and พยายามไม่พูด.
  • These are lexical Thai complement frames with invariant verbs, not English infinitives or one imported formal raising rule.
