อยาก and ต้องการ

Thai อยาก and ต้องการ both enter English translations containing want, but they organize the desire differently. อยาก + event is the everyday way to present what someone feels like doing. ต้องการ + noun or event presents a more explicit want, requirement, or intended outcome and is common in service, workplace, and formal contexts as well as careful everyday speech.

Neither predicate conjugates. ผมอยากไป, เขาอยากไป, and เมื่อวานเราอยากไป all contain the same อยาก and ไป. Thai places the desired event directly after the desire predicate, with no equivalent of English to.

เย็นนี้ผมอยากกินอาหารไทยครับ

yen ni phom yak kin ahan thai khrap

I'd like to eat Thai food this evening. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ฉันอยากได้กระเป๋าใบเล็กกว่านี้ค่ะ

chan yak dai krapao bai lek kwa ni kha

I'd like a bag smaller than this. (ordinary polite shopping speech, female speaker)

บริษัทต้องการพนักงานที่พูดภาษาไทยได้ค่ะ

borisat tongkan phanak ngan thi phut phasa thai dai kha

The company needs an employee who can speak Thai. (workplace/formal-polite statement, female speaker)

In อยากได้กระเป๋า, lexical ได้ contributes the endpoint “get/have”: the desired situation is acquiring or possessing a bag. With an action, อยาก can be followed directly by the verb: อยากกิน, อยากพัก, อยากกลับ.

💡
For a quick everyday choice, ask what follows. A desired action normally follows อยาก directly; a desired object commonly follows อยากได้. Do not insert an invented Thai word for English to between them.

ต้องการ with things and events

Unlike อยาก, ต้องการ readily takes a noun directly. It can also take a verb phrase. The difference is not that one construction is grammatical and the other forbidden: อยากพัก and ต้องการพัก are both possible. The second often sounds more deliberate, official, or forceful, depending on setting and delivery.

ต้องการถุงกระดาษเพิ่มไหมคะ

tongkan thung kradat phoem mai kha

Would you like an additional paper bag? (ordinary polite service question, female speaker; customer omitted)

ผู้สมัครต้องการแก้ไขข้อมูลตรงไหนครับ

phusamak tongkan kaekhai khomun trong nai khrap

Which part of the information does the applicant wish to correct? (formal-polite administrative question, male speaker)

หลังเดินมาทั้งวัน เราอยากพักมากค่ะ

lang doen ma thang wan rao yak phak mak kha

After walking all day, we really want to rest. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

In a hotel, ต้องการห้องพัก is natural because a room is being requested as a service. Among friends, อยากพัก naturally describes the speaker's present desire. Context and social action matter as much as dictionary meaning.

Wanting someone else to act

When the desired event has another understood subject, ต้องการให้ + participant + verb phrase makes that participant explicit. Here ให้ introduces the person expected to carry out the following event; it is not an English infinitive marker.

หัวหน้าต้องการให้ทีมส่งรายงานภายในวันนี้ครับ

huana tongkan hai thim song raingan phainai wan ni khrap

The supervisor wants the team to submit the report today. (workplace/formal-polite statement, male speaker)

ฉันอยากให้คุณไปด้วยค่ะ

chan yak hai khun pai duai kha

I'd like you to come along. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

The same อยากให้ pattern is common in personal speech. Without ให้ + participant, ฉันอยากไป makes the speaker the understood participant in ไป. With it, ฉันอยากให้คุณไป, คุณ is the one who goes. This is an argument-structure contrast, not conjugation.

Negation and scope

Put ไม่ before the desire predicate to reject the desire: ไม่อยากไป “do not want to go,” ไม่ต้องการเปลี่ยน “do not wish to change.” If ไม่ instead belongs inside the desired event, the meaning changes: อยากไม่ไป can mean “want not to go,” a marked but possible scope when deliberately contrasting attendance with nonattendance.

วันนี้ฉันไม่อยากออกไปไหนค่ะ

wan ni chan mai yak ok pai nai kha

I don't feel like going anywhere today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

ลูกค้าไม่ต้องการเปลี่ยนห้องครับ

luk kha mai tongkan plian hong khrap

The customer does not want to change rooms. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ผมไม่ได้อยากยกเลิกครับ แค่อยากเปลี่ยนเวลา

phom mai dai yak yokloek khrap khae yak plian wela

It's not that I want to cancel; I only want to change the time. (ordinary polite corrective speech, male speaker)

The last sentence uses ไม่ได้อยาก to reject an attributed desire. It is not merely the past of อยาก. Likewise, ไม่ต้องการไป means “do not want to go,” while ไม่ต้องไป means “do not need to go.” The extra การ is not cosmetic.

💡
Keep ไม่ต้องการ “not want/require” separate from ไม่ต้อง “need not.” English don't need can tempt learners toward the wrong one, but the Thai predicates and their scopes are different.

Time, aspect, and omission

Time expressions locate an unchanged desire predicate. เมื่อก่อนอยาก, ตอนนี้อยาก, and พรุ่งนี้อยาก differ through context, not verbal inflection. มานานแล้ว can measure how long a desire has held.

เมื่อก่อนเขาอยากอยู่กรุงเทพฯ แต่ตอนนี้อยากกลับบ้านค่ะ

muea kon khao yak yu krung thep tae ton ni yak klap ban kha

He used to want to live in Bangkok, but now he wants to go home. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

ผมอยากเรียนทำอาหารมานานแล้วครับ

phom yak rian tham ahan ma nan laeo khrap

I've wanted to learn to cook for a long time. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Once the desired person or thing is established, Thai can omit it. At a counter, ไม่ต้องการค่ะ ขอบคุณค่ะ can mean “No, I don't want one, thank you,” when the clerk has just offered a receipt. See time from context and argument omission for these two independent systems.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณต้องการห้องเตียงคู่หรือเตียงเดี่ยวคะ

khun tongkan hong tiang khu rue tiang diao kha

Would you like a room with a double bed or a single bed? (polite hotel question, female staff member)

ผมอยากได้ห้องเตียงคู่ครับ

phom yak dai hong tiang khu khrap

I'd like a room with a double bed. (ordinary polite reply, male guest)

ต้องการอาหารเช้าด้วยไหมคะ

tongkan ahan chao duai mai kha

Would you like breakfast too? (polite service question, female staff member; customer omitted)

ไม่ต้องครับ แต่ผมอยากเช็กอินเร็วกว่าปกติ

mai tong khrap tae phom yak chek in reo kwa pakati

No, thank you, but I'd like to check in earlier than usual. (ordinary polite reply, male guest)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting an ordinary object directly after อยาก

❌ ผมอยากกาแฟหนึ่งแก้วครับ

Incorrect neutral frame for wanting a coffee; อยาก normally selects an event, while อยากได้ presents obtaining the object.

✅ ผมอยากได้กาแฟเย็นหนึ่งแก้วครับ

phom yak dai kafae yen nueng kaeo khrap

I'd like one iced coffee. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Inventing an equivalent of English “to”

❌ ฉันอยากเป็นไปเชียงใหม่ค่ะ

Incorrect—เป็น is not an infinitive marker before ไป.

✅ ฉันอยากไปเชียงใหม่เดือนหน้าค่ะ

chan yak pai chiang mai duean na kha

I want to go to Chiang Mai next month. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Moving ไม่ inside the event unintentionally

❌ ฉันอยากไม่ประชุมวันนี้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended ordinary meaning 'I don't want to meet today'; this order scopes desire over not meeting.

✅ ฉันไม่อยากประชุมวันนี้ค่ะ

chan mai yak prachum wan ni kha

I don't want to meet today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

4. Confusing ไม่ต้องการ with ไม่ต้อง

❌ พรุ่งนี้ฉันไม่ต้องการไปทำงานค่ะ

Wrong for the intended meaning 'I don't have to work tomorrow'; this says I do not want to go.

✅ พรุ่งนี้ฉันไม่ต้องไปทำงานค่ะ

phrung ni chan mai tong pai tham ngan kha

I don't have to go to work tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

5. Adding แล้ว immediately after อยาก as a past ending

❌ เมื่อวานผมอยากแล้วกลับบ้านครับ

Incorrect—แล้ว is not a past-tense suffix attached to อยาก.

✅ เมื่อวานผมอยากกลับบ้านเร็วครับ

muea wan phom yak klap ban reo khrap

Yesterday I wanted to go home early. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Use อยาก + event for an everyday felt desire and อยากได้ + thing for wanting to obtain or have something.
  • ต้องการ can take either a noun or a verb phrase; it often presents a deliberate requirement and is common in service and formal contexts, but it is not banned from conversation.
  • อยากให้/ต้องการให้ + participant + event assigns the following event to another participant.
  • Verb forms remain unchanged; time, aspect, negation scope, and recoverable omission are separate choices.
