Thai ต้องการ presents a want, need, requirement, or intended outcome explicitly. Unlike everyday อยาก, it readily takes a thing directly: ต้องการข้อมูลเพิ่ม “need more information.” It can also introduce an event or a clause with another actor. This flexibility makes it common in (formal-neutral) service encounters, workplaces, administration, surveys, and careful speech.
ต้องการ is one invariant predicate, not ต้อง plus a conjugation. The extra การ is part of the word and changes the meaning: ไม่ต้องส่ง means “there is no need to send,” while ไม่ต้องการส่ง means “do not want to send.”
Things, events, and other actors
| Productive slot | Substitution | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| person/institution + ต้องการ + noun phrase | บริษัท + ต้องการ + หลักฐานเพิ่มเติม | want, need, or require a thing |
| person + ต้องการ + event | ผู้โดยสาร + ต้องการ + เปลี่ยนเที่ยวบิน | explicit or deliberate desired action |
| person/institution + ต้องการให้ + participant + event | หัวหน้า + ต้องการให้ + ทีม + แก้ไข | want another participant to act |
| question + ต้องการ...ไหม | ต้องการ + รับสำเนา + ไหม | polite service offer or needs assessment |
| person/institution + ไม่ต้องการ + event | ลูกค้า + ไม่ต้องการ + ต่อสัญญา | explicitly reject the desire or requirement |
ฝ่ายบัญชีต้องการหลักฐานการชำระเงินเพิ่มเติมค่ะ
fai banchi tongkan lakthan kan chamra ngoen phoemtoem kha
Accounting needs additional proof of payment. (formal-polite workplace statement, female voice)
ผู้โดยสารต้องการเปลี่ยนเที่ยวบินเป็นวันพรุ่งนี้ครับ
phu doisan tongkan plian thiao bin pen wan phrung ni khrap
The passenger wishes to change the flight to tomorrow. (formal-polite service report, male speaker)
ผู้จัดการต้องการให้ทุกแผนกส่งยอดภายในเที่ยงค่ะ
phu chatkan tongkan hai thuk phanaek song yot phainai thiang kha
The manager wants every department to submit its figures by noon. (formal-polite workplace statement, female speaker)
The complement answers two questions. What outcome is wanted—a thing or an event? And who is responsible for the event? With ต้องการเปลี่ยนเที่ยวบิน, the passenger is understood to pursue the change. With ต้องการให้ทุกแผนกส่งยอด, ให้ introduces the separate actors who must submit the figures.
How it differs from อยาก
อยาก centers a person's felt desire or appetite; ต้องการ packages a want as an explicit objective, requested service, or requirement. The difference is not “informal word versus formal word” in every sentence. Both occur in conversation, but the action being performed by the utterance matters.
เดินมาทั้งเช้าแล้ว ฉันอยากนั่งพักค่ะ
doen ma thang chao laeo chan yak nang phak kha
I've been walking all morning; I feel like sitting down for a rest. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; felt desire)
สำหรับการประชุม เราต้องการห้องที่นั่งได้ยี่สิบคนครับ
samrap kan prachum rao tongkan hong thi nang dai yi sip khon khrap
For the meeting, we need a room that seats twenty people. (formal-polite planning statement, male speaker; explicit requirement)
At a hotel desk, ต้องการห้องแบบไหนคะ is a normal professional question, not cold or ceremonial. Between close friends deciding dinner, อยากกินอะไร is more natural because the speaker is asking about appetite. Conversely, a customer who says ผมต้องการคุยกับผู้จัดการครับ sounds deliberate and firm: speaking to the manager is presented as an explicit requested outcome.
ผมต้องการคุยกับผู้รับผิดชอบเรื่องนี้ครับ
phom tongkan khui kap phu rap phit chop rueang ni khrap
I need to speak with the person responsible for this matter. (firm but polite service request, male speaker)
English need is also context-dependent. บริษัทต้องการพนักงานเพิ่ม says the company needs more employees; ฉันต้องไปทำงาน says the speaker must go to work. One names a required resource, while the other imposes necessity on an event. Do not reduce both to one English auxiliary template.
For the personal side of the contrast, see personal desire with อยาก; for event necessity, see necessity and inference with ต้อง.
Service questions and deliberate requests
Routine staff questions often omit the addressee because the service roles make it obvious. ต้องการรับใบเสร็จไหมคะ is a polite female clerk's question; repeating คุณ in every question can sound pointed. Politeness particles and service vocabulary do the interpersonal work.
ต้องการรับเอกสารฉบับพิมพ์ด้วยไหมคะ
tongkan rap ekkasan chabap phim duai mai kha
Would you also like a printed copy of the document? (polite service question, female staff member; addressee omitted)
ไม่ต้องการครับ ส่งไฟล์ทางอีเมลอย่างเดียวก็พอ
mai tongkan khrap song fai thang imen yang diao ko pho
No, thank you. Just sending the file by email is enough. (ordinary polite reply, male customer; object recoverable)
The second sentence can omit the offered copy because it was just mentioned. This is discourse-based object omission, not a special intransitive form of ต้องการ. Without such a context, ต้องการครับ invites the question “want what?”
For especially careful intentions, ต้องการจะ + event occurs in (formal/careful) speech and writing. จะ makes the projected action prominent but does not mark an infinitive.
คณะทำงานต้องการจะทบทวนข้อเสนอก่อนประกาศผลค่ะ
khana tham ngan tongkan cha thopthuan khosanoe kon prakat phon kha
The working group wishes to review the proposal before announcing the result. (formal statement, female voice)
Negation and the crucial ต้อง contrast
ไม่ต้องการ + X rejects the want or requirement. It does not exempt someone from an obligation. ไม่ต้อง + event removes necessity: “do not have to.” The two forms differ by one syllable but answer different questions.
ลูกค้าไม่ต้องการเปิดเผยหมายเลขโทรศัพท์ค่ะ
luk kha mai tongkan poetphoei mailek thorasap kha
The customer does not wish to disclose a telephone number. (formal-polite service report, female speaker; desire denied)
ลูกค้าไม่ต้องกรอกหมายเลขโทรศัพท์ครับ
luk kha mai tong krok mailek thorasap khrap
The customer does not have to enter a telephone number. (formal-polite procedural statement, male speaker; necessity removed)
Within a ให้-complement, a second ไม่ can negate the desired event: ต้องการให้พนักงานไม่เปิดเผยข้อมูล “require employees not to disclose information.” That is different from ไม่ต้องการให้พนักงานเปิดเผยข้อมูล, which denies the desire for disclosure. In many practical contexts both point toward nondisclosure, but their grammatical scope is not identical.
จะ, aspect, and changing requirements
Time expressions and aspect markers surround an unchanged ต้องการ. ยังต้องการ says a want continues; ต้องการ...แล้ว can make a newly relevant desire explicit; จะต้องการ can predict a future requirement. Because ต้องการ is state-like, กำลัง usually belongs on a process such as กำลังประเมินว่าต้องการอะไร rather than mechanically producing “is wanting.”
โครงการระยะต่อไปจะต้องการงบประมาณมากขึ้นครับ
khrongkan raya to pai cha tongkan ngoppraman mak khuen khrap
The next phase of the project will require a larger budget. (formal-polite planning statement, male speaker)
ตอนนี้ทีมกำลังประเมินว่าต้องการอุปกรณ์อะไรเพิ่มค่ะ
ton ni thim kamlang pramoen wa tongkan uppakon arai phoem kha
The team is now assessing what additional equipment it needs. (formal-polite workplace update, female speaker; progressive on the assessment)
In the written string จะต้องการ, the intended grouping here is จะ + ต้องการ “will need.” In another context จะต้อง + การ... could begin “will have to [nominalized event].” Thai does not insert spaces to disambiguate ordinary words; syntax and what follows do that work.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
สำหรับงานสัมมนา คุณต้องการห้องขนาดเท่าไรคะ
samrap ngan sammana khun tongkan hong khanat thao rai kha
For the seminar, what size room do you need? (polite planning question, female speaker)
เราต้องการห้องสำหรับประมาณสามสิบคนครับ
rao tongkan hong samrap praman sam sip khon khrap
We need a room for about thirty people. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ต้องการให้จัดโต๊ะเป็นแถวหรือเป็นกลุ่มคะ
tongkan hai chat to pen thaeo rue pen klum kha
Would you like the tables arranged in rows or in groups? (polite service question, female speaker; customer omitted)
อยากให้จัดเป็นกลุ่มครับ คนจะได้คุยกันสะดวก
yak hai chat pen klum khrap khon cha dai khui kan saduak
I'd like them arranged in groups so people can talk conveniently. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; personal preference)
The customer's last answer naturally shifts to อยากให้ because it presents his preference, while the planner's ต้องการให้ asks for a service specification. Thai speakers can shift viewpoint within one exchange.
Common Mistakes
1. Confusing ไม่ต้องการ with exemption
❌ พรุ่งนี้คุณไม่ต้องการมาสำนักงานค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘you don't have to come’; this says you do not want to come.
✅ พรุ่งนี้คุณไม่ต้องมาสำนักงานค่ะ
phrung ni khun mai tong ma samnakngan kha
You don't have to come to the office tomorrow. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
2. Copying English infinitive grammar
❌ ผู้สมัครต้องการเป็นแก้ข้อมูลครับ
Incorrect—เป็น is not an infinitive marker before แก้.
✅ ผู้สมัครต้องการแก้ข้อมูลในแบบฟอร์มครับ
phu samak tongkan kae khomun nai baep fom khrap
The applicant wishes to correct information on the form. (formal-polite administrative statement, male speaker)
3. Omitting ให้ before a different actor
❌ หัวหน้าต้องการทีมประชุมตอนบ่ายค่ะ
Incorrect for wanting the team to act; the participant needs ให้ in this frame.
✅ หัวหน้าต้องการให้ทีมประชุมตอนบ่ายค่ะ
hua na tongkan hai thim prachum ton bai kha
The supervisor wants the team to meet this afternoon. (formal-polite workplace statement, female speaker)
4. Adding an English-style copula before ต้องการ
❌ ผมเป็นต้องการกินไอศกรีมครับ
Incorrect—Thai does not insert เป็น before ต้องการ to imitate English ‘am wanting.’
✅ ตอนนี้ผมอยากกินไอศกรีมครับ
ton ni phom yak kin aisakrim khrap
Right now I feel like having ice cream. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker)
5. Attaching แล้ว as a past ending
❌ เมื่อวานบริษัทต้องการแล้วพนักงานเพิ่มค่ะ
Incorrect—แล้ว does not conjugate ต้องการ for past time.
✅ เมื่อวานบริษัทประกาศว่าต้องการพนักงานเพิ่มค่ะ
muea wan borisat prakat wa tongkan phanak ngan phoem kha
Yesterday the company announced that it needed more employees. (formal report, female voice; past from เมื่อวาน and ประกาศ)
Key Takeaways
- ต้องการ + thing/event presents an explicit want, need, or requirement; ต้องการให้ + participant + event assigns the desired event to somebody else.
- Service Thai uses ต้องการ naturally, while อยาก more often centers a personal felt desire.
- Keep ไม่ต้องการ, ไม่ต้อง, and ต้องไม่ distinct; similar sound does not mean identical scope.
- จะ, aspect expressions, and time context surround invariant ต้องการ rather than conjugating it.
