Thai อยาก is an invariant desire predicate. Its most productive frame is อยาก + event “want/feel like doing,” with the person who wants normally understood as the actor of the following event. When the desired outcome is obtaining a thing, Thai uses อยากได้ + noun phrase. When another person is to act, อยากให้ + participant + event makes that participant explicit.
Three core desire frames
English uses want before both nouns and infinitives. Thai divides the work among constructions, so the complement after อยาก matters.
| Desired outcome | Productive frame | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| the wanter performs an event | person + อยาก + event | อยากกลับบ้าน |
| the wanter obtains or has a thing | person + อยากได้ + noun phrase | อยากได้โต๊ะริมหน้าต่าง |
| another participant performs an event | person + อยากให้ + participant + event | อยากให้ช่างมาตรวจ |
| desire for knowledge | person + อยากรู้ + content | อยากรู้ว่าร้านปิดกี่โมง |
| more explicit/formal want | person + ต้องการ + noun/event | ต้องการข้อมูลเพิ่มเติม |
เย็นนี้ผมอยากกลับบ้านเร็วหน่อยครับ
yen ni phom yak klap ban reo noi khrap
This evening I'd like to go home a little early. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; same-subject event)
ฉันอยากได้บัตรรอบบ่ายสองใบค่ะ
chan yak dai bat rop bai song bai kha
I'd like two tickets for the afternoon showing. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker; desired object)
เราอยากให้ช่างมาตรวจเครื่องปรับอากาศพรุ่งนี้ครับ
rao yak hai chang ma truat khrueang prap akat phrung ni khrap
We want the technician to inspect the air conditioner tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; different actor after ให้)
There is no Thai infinitive form after อยาก. In อยากกลับ, กลับ is an unchanged event predicate whose actor is shared with the person experiencing the desire. The desire overview compares this everyday frame with ต้องการ in service and administrative language.
อยากได้ is not merely อยาก plus a past marker
In อยากได้กระเป๋าใบนี้, ได้ contributes an obtaining or having outcome. It is not a past marker and does not mean that the bag has already been received. The whole construction expresses desire directed toward possession or acquisition.
น้องอยากได้จักรยานคันเล็กสำหรับไปโรงเรียนค่ะ
nong yak dai chakkrayan khan lek samrap pai rongrian kha
My younger sibling wants a small bicycle for going to school. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
คุณอยากได้ห้องชั้นบนหรือชั้นล่างคะ
khun yak dai hong chan bon rue chan lang kha
Would you like a room on an upper floor or a lower floor? (polite hotel question, female staff member)
When the object is visible or already named, it may be omitted: อยากได้ไหมคะ — อยากได้ครับ “Do you want it? — Yes.” This is recoverable object omission. Without a salient object, อยากได้ leaves the listener asking what is wanted.
อยาก, อยากจะ, and future reference
อยากจะ + event is also grammatical. จะ can make the contemplated action more explicit or deliberate, and it is common in careful speech, but it is not required as an equivalent of English to. More importantly, อยาก(จะ)ไป expresses desire; จะไป presents an intention, prospect, or future-oriented event. Wanting does not guarantee realization.
ผมอยากจะขอเลื่อนนัดเป็นวันศุกร์ครับ
phom yak cha kho luean nat pen wan suk khrap
I'd like to ask to move the appointment to Friday. (careful polite request, male speaker)
ฉันอยากไปนิทรรศการ แต่พรุ่งนี้ต้องทำงานค่ะ
chan yak pai nithatsakan tae phrung ni tong tham ngan kha
I want to go to the exhibition, but I have to work tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; desire not realized)
พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะไปดูสถานที่ครับ
phrung ni phuak rao cha pai du sathanthi khrap
Tomorrow we're going to inspect the venue. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; plan rather than desire)
The unchanged headword in different environments
Current desire is normally bare: ตอนนี้อยากพัก. Since wanting is state-like, Thai does not mechanically put กำลัง before it. To present an emerging desire, กำลังเริ่มอยาก... is clearer. Other particles and time expressions surround the unchanged อยาก.
| Environment | Thai pattern | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อวานผมอยากพักอยู่บ้าน | เมื่อวาน locates the desire earlier |
| emerging desire | ฉันกำลังเริ่มอยากเปลี่ยนงาน | กำลัง marks the change expressed by เริ่ม |
| current threshold | เขาอยากกลับแล้ว | แล้ว says the wish is now relevant |
| predicted later desire | พวกเราคงจะอยากพักหลังเดินทาง | คงจะ predicts a later state |
| negative desire | เขาไม่อยากตอบตอนนี้ | ไม่ before อยาก denies desire |
เมื่อวานผมอยากพักอยู่บ้าน แต่ต้องไปประชุมครับ
muea wan phom yak phak yu ban tae tong pai prachum khrap
Yesterday I wanted to rest at home, but I had to attend a meeting. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from context)
ทำงานนี้มาหลายเดือน ฉันกำลังเริ่มอยากเปลี่ยนงานแล้วค่ะ
tham ngan ni ma lai duean chan kamlang roem yak plian ngan laeo kha
After doing this job for several months, I'm starting to want to change jobs. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; emerging desire)
เดินมาทั้งวัน เขาอยากนั่งพักแล้วครับ
doen ma thang wan khao yak nang phak laeo khrap
After walking all day, he wants to sit down and rest now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
แล้ว after the desired event is not a past suffix on อยาก. In the last example it presents the point at which resting is now wanted. For ordering with modal and aspect expressions, see modal–aspect order.
Negation and scope
ไม่อยาก + event means the subject does not want the event. If the desired outcome itself contains negation, Thai can make the participants and scope explicit with อยากให้ + participant + ไม่ + event. These are not interchangeable.
ฉันไม่อยากรบกวนคุณนอกเวลางานค่ะ
chan mai yak ropkuan khun nok wela ngan kha
I don't want to bother you outside working hours. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; desire negated)
ผมอยากให้เด็ก ๆ ไม่เปิดประตูเองครับ
phom yak hai dek dek mai poet pratu eng khrap
I want the children not to open the door themselves. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; negative desired event)
The contrast follows ordinary Thai scope: negation before อยาก denies wanting, while negation inside the complement belongs to the desired event. See negative scope in verb chains.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
พักเที่ยงนี้คุณอยากกินอะไรคะ
phak thiang ni khun yak kin arai kha
What would you like to eat at lunch today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ผมอยากลองร้านข้าวแกงเปิดใหม่ครับ
phom yak long ran khao kaeng poet mai khrap

อยากให้ฉันจองโต๊ะก่อนไหมคะ

ดีครับ ผมอยากนั่งด้านในเพราะอากาศร้อน
di khrap phom yak nang dan nai phro akat ron
That would be good. I'd like to sit inside because it's hot. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting a desired object directly after อยาก
❌ ฉันอยากร่มคันใหม่ค่ะ
Incorrect neutral object frame—อยาก normally selects an event; add ได้ for desired acquisition.
✅ ฉันอยากได้ร่มพับคันใหม่ค่ะ
chan yak dai rom phap khan mai kha
I want a new folding umbrella. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Inventing an infinitive marker
❌ ผมอยากเป็นไปพักข้างนอกครับ
Incorrect—เป็น is not an equivalent of English infinitival ‘to.’
✅ ผมอยากไปพักต่างจังหวัดสักสองวันครับ
phom yak pai phak tang changwat sak song wan khrap
I'd like to get away to another province for a couple of days. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Omitting ให้ when another person should act
❌ ฉันอยากพนักงานโทรกลับค่ะ
Incorrect for wanting the employee to act; the different actor needs ให้ in this frame.
✅ ฉันอยากให้พนักงานโทรกลับช่วงบ่ายค่ะ
chan yak hai phanak ngan tho klap chuang bai kha
I want the employee to call back this afternoon. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Reversing negative desire
❌ ผมอยากไม่ไปงานคืนนี้ครับ
Nonneutral for the intended simple meaning ‘I don't want to go’; this order puts a negative event inside the desire.
✅ ผมไม่อยากไปงานคืนนี้ครับ
phom mai yak pai ngan khuen ni khrap
I don't want to go to the event tonight. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Using desire as a definite future statement
❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมอยากไปรับเอกสารตอนเก้าโมงครับ
Wrong for the intended firm schedule ‘I will pick up the documents’; this states a desire, not a settled plan.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะไปรับเอกสารตอนเก้าโมงครับ
phrung ni phom cha pai rap ekkasan ton kao mong khrap
Tomorrow I'll pick up the documents at nine. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; planned event)
Key Takeaways
- อยาก + event normally shares its actor with the experiencer; อยากให้ + participant + event introduces a different actor.
- อยากได้ + noun phrase presents desired acquisition or possession.
- อยาก(จะ) expresses desire, not the certainty that a future event will happen.
- Time, aspect, and negation surround invariant อยาก; object or complement omission requires a recoverable context.
