ชอบ: like; tend to

Thai ชอบ is an invariant predicate with two closely related jobs. With a noun or event as its complement, it expresses preference: ชอบชา “like tea,” ชอบเดิน “like walking.” Before another event, it can also present a recurring tendency: ชอบลืม “tend to forget.” That tendency may be pleasant, neutral, or irritating; the surrounding event and the speaker's attitude supply the evaluation.

Preference for things and events

The experiencer normally comes before ชอบ. A preferred thing or activity follows directly: Thai does not insert a counterpart of English to before an event.

subject + ชอบ + eventrecurring tendencyชอบลืมรหัสผ่าน

person + ชอบ + complement + ที่สุดhighest preference in contextชอบเมนูนี้ที่สุด

ผมชอบกาแฟคั่วอ่อนร้านนี้มากครับ

phom chop kafae khua on ran ni mak khrap

I really like this shop's light-roast coffee. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; noun-phrase complement)

ฉันชอบเดินเล่นริมคลองตอนเย็นค่ะ

chan chop doen len rim khlong ton yen kha

I like taking walks along the canal in the evening. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; event complement)

น้องไม่ค่อยชอบอาหารรสจัดค่ะ

nong mai khoi chop ahan rot chat kha

My younger sibling doesn't much like strongly seasoned food. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; softened negative preference)

English like often takes a gerund or to plus a verb. Thai simply places the event predicate after ชอบ. The adjacency does not make เดิน an infinitive, because Thai verbs do not acquire infinitive forms. It is a complement selected by ชอบ.

💡
Ask what the subject prefers. If the answer is a thing, place the noun phrase after ชอบ; if it is an activity, place the event predicate there. Do not build the frame through English like to.

ชอบ before an event: enjoyment or tendency

เขาชอบวิ่งตอนเช้า normally describes an activity he enjoys or habitually chooses. เขาชอบมาสาย commonly describes the recurring tendency to arrive late, often with criticism. There is no separate suffix distinguishing these readings. Whether the event is ordinarily desirable, whether the subject controls it, and what the conversation is doing guide the interpretation.

เขาชอบลืมกุญแจไว้ในรถครับ

khao chop luem kunchae wai nai rot khrap

He tends to leave his keys in the car. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; recurring and mildly disapproved behavior)

เครื่องพิมพ์เครื่องนี้ชอบค้างตอนงานเร่งค่ะ

khrueang phim khrueang ni chop khang ton ngan reng kha

This printer tends to freeze when work is urgent. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; recurring inanimate tendency)

วันหยุดพวกเราชอบหาร้านเล็ก ๆ นั่งคุยกันครับ

wan yut phuak rao chop ha ran lek lek nang khui kan khrap

On days off, we like finding a small place and sitting there talking. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; enjoyed habit)

The tendency use is becoming more grammatical in function, but it still retains a connection with recurring disposition. It is not interchangeable with every frequency expression. เขาไปยิมบ่อย reports frequency; เขาชอบไปยิม presents going as his characteristic choice or tendency. The fuller habituality reference compares frequency adverbs and habitual constructions.

The unchanged headword in different environments

Preferences are states, so bare ชอบ is normally sufficient for a present preference. Plain กำลังชอบ is possible in specially framed evolving or temporary situations, but neutral Thai more clearly presents change with กำลังเริ่มชอบ “am beginning to like.” The headword itself remains ชอบ throughout.

EnvironmentThai patternWhat supplies the interpretation
past contextเมื่อก่อนผมชอบทำงานกลางคืนเมื่อก่อน locates the preference in an earlier period
developing preferenceฉันกำลังเริ่มชอบเพลงแนวนี้กำลัง scopes over the change predicate เริ่ม
changed stateเขาชอบเมนูผักนี้แล้วแล้ว presents a newly established preference
prospective judgmentพวกเราน่าจะชอบบรรยากาศที่นั่นน่าจะ estimates a likely later reaction
negative preferenceเขาไม่ชอบรอคิวนานไม่ before ชอบ denies liking

เมื่อก่อนผมชอบทำงานกลางคืน แต่ตอนนี้ตื่นเช้าครับ

muea kon phom chop tham ngan klang khuen tae ton ni tuen chao khrap

I used to like working at night, but now I get up early. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from context)

ฉันกำลังเริ่มชอบเพลงแนวนี้แล้วค่ะ

chan kamlang roem chop phleng naeo ni laeo kha

I'm beginning to like this style of music now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; developing preference)

ลองนั่งด้านนอกสิครับ พวกเราน่าจะชอบบรรยากาศตรงนั้น

long nang dan nok si khrap phuak rao na cha chop banyakat trong nan

Let's try sitting outside; we'll probably like the atmosphere there. (ordinary polite suggestion, male speaker)

No form comparable to liked or will like appears. Earlier time, developing change, and prediction come from context and surrounding material, not conjugation. See events in time without conjugation.

Negation, degree, and omission

ไม่ชอบ + complement means “not like / dislike.” ไม่ค่อยชอบ is less categorical and is common when politely declining food, styles, or activities. With tendency ชอบ, the position of ไม่ changes scope: ไม่ชอบตอบข้อความ most readily says “does not like answering messages,” while ชอบไม่ตอบข้อความ presents not answering as the recurring behavior and often sounds critical.

ฉันไม่ค่อยชอบนั่งในที่เสียงดังค่ะ ขอที่นั่งด้านในได้ไหมคะ

chan mai khoi chop nang nai thi siang dang kha kho thi nang dan nai dai mai kha

I don't much like sitting in noisy places. Could I have a seat inside? (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)

เขาชอบไม่ตอบข้อความตอนมีปัญหาครับ

khao chop mai top khokhwam ton mi panha khrap

He tends not to answer messages when there is a problem. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; negation inside the recurring event)

Once the complement is shared, it may be omitted: ชอบไหมคะ — ชอบค่ะ “Do you like it? — I do.” This is discourse recovery, not a new intransitive conjugation. Degree expressions such as ชอบมาก, ชอบที่สุด, and ชอบมากกว่า follow the relevant predicate or comparison frame.

💡
Keep the two negation scopes apart: ไม่ชอบ V denies liking the activity; ชอบไม่ V characterizes recurrent nonperformance. The latter is useful but often carries an annoyed evaluation.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ปกติคุณชอบนั่งทำงานตรงไหนคะ

pokati khun chop nang tham ngan trong nai kha

Where do you usually like to sit and work? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ผมชอบโต๊ะข้างหน้าต่างครับ เงียบกว่าตรงกลาง

phom chop to khang natang khrap ngiap kwa trong klang

I like the table by the window; it's quieter than the middle. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

โต๊ะนั้นมีคนนั่งประจำค่ะ ลองโต๊ะมุมนี้ไหมคะ

to nan mi khon nang pracham kha long to mum ni mai kha

Someone regularly sits at that table. Would you like to try this corner table? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ได้ครับ ผมน่าจะชอบมุมนี้เหมือนกัน

dai khrap phom na cha chop mum ni muean kan

Sure. I'll probably like this corner too. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding เป็น before a preference predicate

❌ ฉันเป็นชอบร้านนี้ค่ะ

Incorrect—ชอบ is already the predicate; เป็น does not translate every English form of ‘be.’

✅ ฉันชอบร้านอาหารเปิดใหม่แถวนี้ค่ะ

chan chop ran ahan poet mai thaeo ni kha

I like the newly opened restaurant around here. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Inventing an infinitive marker

❌ ผมชอบเป็นไปตลาดเช้าครับ

Incorrect—เป็น is not an infinitive marker between ชอบ and the desired activity.

✅ ผมชอบไปตลาดเช้าวันเสาร์ครับ

phom chop pai talat chao wan sao khrap

I like going to the morning market on Saturdays. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Using ชอบ for every statement of frequency

❌ รถเมล์คันนี้ชอบมาทุกสิบห้านาทีค่ะ

Wrong for a neutral timetable; ชอบ adds a characteristic-tendency viewpoint rather than simply stating scheduled frequency.

✅ รถเมล์สายนี้มาทุกสิบห้านาทีค่ะ

rot me sai ni ma thuk sip ha nathi kha

This bus route comes every fifteen minutes. (ordinary polite informational speech, female speaker)

4. Moving plain negation after the object

❌ เขาชอบอาหารหวานไม่ครับ

Incorrect for ‘he doesn't like sweet food’; plain negation precedes ชอบ.

✅ เขาไม่ชอบขนมที่หวานมากครับ

khao mai chop khanom thi wan mak khrap

He doesn't like desserts that are very sweet. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

5. Treating tendency ชอบ as automatically positive

❌ หัวหน้าชอบเปลี่ยนแผน หมายความว่าหัวหน้าสนุกกับการเปลี่ยนแผนค่ะ

Incorrect inference—ชอบเปลี่ยนแผน can simply characterize a recurring tendency, often disapprovingly.

✅ หัวหน้าชอบเปลี่ยนแผนตอนใกล้ถึงกำหนดค่ะ

hua na chop plian phaen ton klai thueng kamnot kha

The supervisor tends to change the plan close to the deadline. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; likely disapproving tendency)

Key Takeaways

  • ชอบ + noun/event expresses preference; ชอบ + event can also characterize recurring behavior.
  • Desirability does not determine the tendency reading: ชอบช่วยคน may be praised, while ชอบมาสาย is normally criticized.
  • ชอบ never conjugates. Context, เริ่ม, แล้ว, prediction, and negation build temporal and aspectual meanings around it.
  • Omit the complement only when the listener can recover it.
