ต้อง: must; need; touch

Thai ต้อง has two major modal readings and an older lexical reading that remains alive in particular combinations. Before an event, it can present a requirement—“must, have to, need to”—or a strong inference—“must be the case.” As a lexical predicate, ต้อง can mean “touch, come into contact with, be exposed to,” especially in expressions such as ต้องน้ำ, ต้องแดด, and ต้องลม. These functions share one pronunciation and spelling but have different frames.

Requirement: ต้อง + event

In its common deontic use, ต้อง precedes the required event. The actor may be stated or omitted when the conversation identifies them. Neither ต้อง nor the following verb changes for person or tense.

ต้องไม่ + eventrequirement that event not happenต้องไม่เปิดเผยข้อมูล

ผู้เข้าชมต้องฝากกระเป๋าใบใหญ่ไว้ด้านหน้าค่ะ

phu khao chom tong fak krapao bai yai wai dan na kha

Visitors must leave large bags at the front. (formal-polite venue instruction, female voice)

พรุ่งนี้ผมต้องพาแม่ไปพบหมอครับ

phrung ni phom tong pha mae pai phop mo khrap

Tomorrow I have to take my mother to see the doctor. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ซ่อมเสร็จแล้ว คุณไม่ต้องนำเครื่องกลับมาอีกค่ะ

som set laeo khun mai tong nam khrueang klap ma ik kha

The repair is complete; you don't need to bring the device back again. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)

The source of the requirement may be a rule, circumstance, promise, or speaker. Thai does not encode that source by conjugating ต้อง. The broader obligation overview compares ต้อง with จำเป็นต้อง and ควร.

💡
Learn ไม่ต้อง V and ต้องไม่ V as a scope pair. The first removes a requirement; the second requires nonperformance. Reversing their order can reverse a real-world instruction.

Strong inference from evidence

When the clause describes a conclusion rather than an action imposed on someone, ต้อง expresses epistemic necessity: the speaker considers the proposition strongly supported. Context commonly supplies the evidence, and words such as แน่, แน่ , or แน่นอน can reinforce the conclusion.

รองเท้าเขาอยู่หน้าห้อง เขาต้องกลับมาแล้วแน่ครับ

rongthao khao yu na hong khao tong klap ma laeo nae khrap

His shoes are outside the room; he must have come back. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)

ถนนเปียกทั้งสาย เมื่อคืนฝนต้องตกหนักแน่ค่ะ

thanon piak thang sai muea khuen fon tong tok nak nae kha

The whole road is wet; it must have rained heavily last night. (ordinary polite inference, female speaker)

ในห้องเงียบสนิท ทุกคนต้องออกไปกินข้าวแล้วครับ

nai hong ngiap sanit thuk khon tong ok pai kin khao laeo khrap

The room is completely quiet; everyone must have gone out to eat already. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)

The same surface order ต้อง + predicate therefore does not always impose a duty. Ask whether the subject controls a required action or whether the speaker is reasoning from evidence. The dedicated epistemic ต้อง page develops evidence, probability, and aspect in more complex cases.

Lexical ต้อง: contact and exposure

Lexical ต้อง + noun means that something comes into contact with or is exposed to the following substance or force. This use is most familiar in established combinations. แผลต้องน้ำ is common in care instructions; ต้องแดด, ต้องลม, and ต้องฝน occur in careful everyday description and writing. This is a lexical predicate, not the modal “must” followed by a noun.

ช่วงสองวันนี้อย่าให้แผลต้องน้ำนะครับ

chuang song wan ni ya hai phlae tong nam na khrap

For the next two days, don't let the wound come into contact with water. (polite medical instruction, male speaker; lexical contact)

ยาชนิดนี้เสื่อมคุณภาพง่ายเมื่อต้องแดดค่ะ

ya chanit ni sueam khunnaphap ngai muea tong daet kha

This medicine deteriorates easily when exposed to sunlight. (careful informative speech, female speaker; lexical exposure)

ต้นอ่อนที่ต้องลมแรงทั้งคืนเริ่มเอนแล้วครับ

ton on thi tong lom raeng thang khuen roem en laeo khrap

The seedlings exposed to strong wind all night have begun to lean. (careful descriptive speech, male speaker)

This lexical sense has a narrower distribution than English touch. For a deliberate act of touching with the hand, แตะ or จับ is usually more specific. Do not freely replace every English touch with ต้อง.

💡
Use the lexical contact sense in attested combinations such as แผลต้องน้ำ and ของต้องแดด. For an intentional finger or hand action, choose แตะ or จับ according to the action.

An invariant-form matrix

Modal ต้อง itself is not normally the event placed in the progressive. If an ongoing event contains a current requirement, กำลัง marks that event while ต้อง remains inside its clause. Other time and aspect expressions likewise contribute their own meanings.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
past requirementเมื่อวานผมต้องแก้รายงานเมื่อวาน locates the requirement earlier
ongoing event with requirementฉันกำลังทำงานที่ต้องส่งวันนี้กำลัง marks ทำงาน, while ต้อง heads the embedded requirement
new immediate necessityเขาต้องกลับแล้วแล้ว signals that leaving is now due
future requirementพวกเราจะต้องเปลี่ยนแผนจะ places the requirement forward
lack of necessityเขาไม่ต้องรอไม่ scopes over ต้อง

เมื่อวานผมต้องแก้รายงานสามรอบครับ

muea wan phom tong kae raingan sam rop khrap

Yesterday I had to revise the report three times. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; past from context)

ฉันกำลังทำเอกสารที่ต้องส่งก่อนเที่ยงค่ะ

chan kamlang tham ekkasan thi tong song kon thiang kha

I'm working on documents that have to be submitted before noon. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; progressive event containing a requirement)

รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายใกล้ออกแล้ว เขาต้องกลับตอนนี้ครับ

rot thiao sutthai klai ok laeo khao tong klap ton ni khrap

The last bus is about to leave; he has to go back now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; immediate necessity)

เดือนหน้าพวกเราจะต้องย้ายสำนักงานชั่วคราวค่ะ

duean na phuak rao cha tong yai samnakngan chuakhrao kha

Next month we'll have to move the office temporarily. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)

The form ต้อง remains identical. แล้ว in ต้องกลับแล้ว does not mean the returning is complete; it says the situation has reached the point when returning is necessary. This is why one-marker–one-tense translations fail.

Omission and ordinary-polite dialogue

The actor, required object, or event may be omitted when recoverable. A reply ต้องครับ can mean “yes, it is necessary” only when the question has supplied the missing event.

แบบฟอร์มนี้ต้องให้หัวหน้าเซ็นไหมคะ

baep fom ni tong hai hua na sen mai kha

Does this form have to be signed by the supervisor? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ต้องครับ แล้วต้องแนบสำเนาบัตรด้วย

tong khrap laeo tong naep samnao bat duai

Yes, and a copy of the ID has to be attached too. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; first event omitted recoverably)

ต้องส่งต้นฉบับวันนี้เลยไหมคะ

tong song tonchabap wan ni loei mai kha

Does the original have to be submitted today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; actor omitted)

ไม่ต้องครับ ส่งพรุ่งนี้เช้าก็ได้

mai tong khrap song phrung ni chao ko dai

No. Submitting it tomorrow morning is fine. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Confusing exemption with prohibition

❌ วันเสาร์คุณต้องไม่เข้ามาครับ

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘you don't need to come in’; this says coming in is prohibited.

✅ วันเสาร์คุณไม่ต้องเข้ามาครับ

wan sao khun mai tong khao ma khrap

You don't need to come in on Saturday. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Copying English auxiliary negation order

❌ ฉันต้องยื่นคำขอไม่ค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘I don't have to apply’; ไม่ must scope before ต้อง.

✅ ฉันไม่ต้องยื่นคำขอใหม่ค่ะ

chan mai tong yuen kham kho mai kha

I don't have to submit a new application. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Attaching แล้ว as a past suffix

❌ เมื่อวานผมต้องแล้วอยู่ดึกครับ

Incorrect—แล้ว is not a past-tense ending attached to ต้อง.

✅ เมื่อวานผมต้องอยู่ทำงานจนดึกครับ

muea wan phom tong yu tham ngan chon duek khrap

Yesterday I had to stay and work late. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

4. Using modal ต้อง directly before a desired thing

❌ ผมต้องน้ำเย็นหนึ่งขวดครับ

Wrong for ‘I need a bottle of cold water’; ต้อง + noun can trigger the lexical contact reading rather than a modal requirement.

✅ ผมต้องการน้ำเย็นหนึ่งขวดครับ

phom tongkan nam yen nueng khuat khrap

I need one bottle of cold water. (ordinary polite service speech, male speaker)

5. Treating every ต้อง clause as an obligation

❌ รถเขาจอดอยู่ เขาต้องอยู่ข้างในครับ หมายความว่ามีคนสั่งให้เขาอยู่

Incorrect interpretation—the evidence supports an inference; it does not necessarily impose a duty.

✅ รถเขาจอดอยู่ เขาต้องอยู่ข้างในแน่ครับ

rot khao chot yu khao tong yu khang nai nae khrap

His car is parked here; he must be inside. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Modal ต้อง + event expresses either requirement or strong inference; context distinguishes the readings.
  • ไม่ต้อง V removes necessity, while ต้องไม่ V requires the negative event.
  • Lexical ต้อง + noun means contact or exposure in established combinations such as ต้องน้ำ and ต้องแดด.
  • ต้อง never conjugates. Time, aspect, negation, and evidence are expressed elsewhere in the clause.
