ต้อง, ควร, and จำเป็น

Thai ต้อง, ควร, and จำเป็น do not form a conjugation table matching English must, have to, should, and need. They make different judgments about an unchanged event: ต้อง + event presents a strong requirement or confident inference, ควร + event presents advice or an appropriate course, and จำเป็นต้อง + event explicitly presents necessity.

The order of negation is crucial. ไม่ต้องไป releases someone from going—“you need not go.” ต้องไม่ไป requires the negative event—“you must not go.” English learners who treat not as a movable auxiliary attachment can accidentally reverse the practical instruction.

พรุ่งนี้ผมต้องไปธนาคารครับ

phrung ni phom tong pai thanakhan khrap

I have to go to the bank tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

คุณควรพักผ่อนให้มากกว่านี้ค่ะ

khun khuan phak phon hai mak kwa ni kha

You should get more rest. (ordinary polite advice, female speaker)

เอกสารนี้จำเป็นต้องมีลายเซ็นครับ

ekkasan ni champen tong mi lai sen khrap

This document must have a signature. (formal-polite requirement, male speaker)

ต้อง is normally stronger than ควร. The distinction is not about past versus present: neither word has tense inflection. It is about modal force—requirement versus recommendation. จำเป็นต้อง makes the necessity itself explicit and is especially common in instructions, administrative language, and careful explanation.

💡
Choose by force, not by an English word list. ควร leaves room for judgment; ต้อง presents a requirement; จำเป็นต้อง foregrounds the necessity and often suits formal explanations.

ต้อง as obligation and strong inference

With an action under someone's control, ต้อง readily expresses obligation. With a proposition supported by evidence, the same form can express a confident conclusion. Context—not a change in ต้อง—distinguishes them.

ผู้สมัครต้องส่งหลักฐานภายในวันศุกร์ค่ะ

phusamak tong song lakthan phainai wan suk kha

Applicants must submit the evidence by Friday. (formal administrative instruction, female voice)

ไฟในห้องยังเปิดอยู่ เขาต้องยังอยู่ที่ทำงานแน่ครับ

fai nai hong yang poet yu khao tong yang yu thi tham ngan nae khrap

The light in his room is still on; he must still be at work. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)

วันนี้ฝนตก เราคงต้องเลื่อนนัดค่ะ

wan ni fon tok rao khong tong luean nat kha

It's raining today, so we'll probably have to postpone the appointment. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

The last sentence stacks คง and ต้อง. Thai permits several modal and aspectual elements around an unchanged predicate. It is misleading to force each one into an English auxiliary slot or call the following verb an infinitive.

ควร for advice and norms

ควร says that an action is advisable, appropriate, or normatively expected. ควรจะ is also common; จะ does not turn ควร into a past form comparable to English should. The exact interpersonal force depends on role and setting: advice from a friend and a rule in a handbook can use the same form but carry different authority.

ก่อนเซ็น คุณควรอ่านเงื่อนไขทั้งหมดครับ

kon sen khun khuan an ngueankhai thangmot khrap

Before signing, you should read all the terms. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker)

เราไม่ควรส่งข้อมูลส่วนตัวในแชตค่ะ

rao mai khuan song khomun suan tua nai chaet kha

We shouldn't send personal information in chat. (ordinary polite advice, female speaker)

ถ้าง่วงมาก คุณควรพักก่อนขับรถครับ

tha nguang mak khun khuan phak kon khap rot khrap

If you're very sleepy, you should rest before driving. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker)

Negation precedes ควร for ordinary “should not”: ไม่ควรส่ง. The less usual order ควรไม่... can arise when speakers deliberately scope “it is advisable” over a negative proposition, but learners should master ไม่ควร + event for neutral advice first.

จำเป็น and จำเป็นต้อง

จำเป็น can itself be a predicate meaning “be necessary.” Before an event, จำเป็นต้อง + verb phrase is the compact standard frame. More elaborate มีความจำเป็นต้อง... is (formal/bureaucratic) and usually too heavy for everyday needs.

จำเป็นต้องนัดล่วงหน้าไหมคะ

champen tong nat luang na mai kha

Is it necessary to make an appointment in advance? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; actor omitted)

ไม่จำเป็นต้องพิมพ์สำเนาค่ะ ส่งไฟล์ได้เลย

mai champen tong phim samnao kha song fai dai loei

There is no need to print a copy; you can send the file directly. (ordinary polite instruction, female speaker)

ผู้โดยสารมีความจำเป็นต้องแสดงเอกสารต้นฉบับครับ

phu doisan mi khwam champen tong sadaeng ekkasan tonchabap khrap

Passengers are required to present the original document. (formal/bureaucratic announcement, male voice)

The last frame is genuine formal Thai, not a separate formal grammar: it expands the same concept with the noun ความจำเป็น “necessity.” In ordinary conversation, ต้องแสดง or จำเป็นต้องแสดง is usually clearer.

💡
Reserve มีความจำเป็นต้อง for official or bureaucratic prose. It is grammatical, but using it to tell a friend to bring an ID sounds institutionally heavy.

ไม่ต้อง versus ต้องไม่

This order contrast deserves to be learned as a pair:

พรุ่งนี้ไม่ต้องเข้ามาครับ ทำงานที่บ้านได้

phrung ni mai tong khao ma khrap tham ngan thi ban dai

You don't need to come in tomorrow; you can work from home. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

คุณต้องไม่บอกรหัสผ่านให้ใครนะคะ

khun tong mai bok rahat phan hai khrai na kha

You must not tell anyone your password. (polite warning, female speaker)

In ไม่ต้อง + event, negation has scope over necessity: the event is optional. In ต้องไม่ + event, necessity has scope over negation: nonperformance is required. ไม่จำเป็นต้อง + event patterns with ไม่ต้อง, but is more explicit and often more formal.

Time, omission, and unchanged predicates

Time adverbs locate the requirement without changing the modal or verb. เมื่อวานต้องส่ง means “had to submit yesterday”; พรุ่งนี้ต้องส่ง means “must submit tomorrow.” A subject or object can disappear once context makes it recoverable.

เมื่อวานผมต้องกลับก่อนเพราะลูกไม่สบายครับ

muea wan phom tong klap kon phro luk mai sabai khrap

Yesterday I had to leave early because my child was sick. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ต้องส่งวันนี้ค่ะ พรุ่งนี้จะไม่ทัน

tong song wan ni kha phrung ni cha mai than

It has to be sent today; tomorrow will be too late. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; subject and document omitted)

The omission is recoverable from the conversation. It does not license randomly deleting a participant that the listener cannot identify. For the time system, see events in time without conjugation.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

เอกสารชุดนี้ต้องส่งวันนี้ไหมคะ

ekkasan chut ni tong song wan ni mai kha

Does this set of documents have to be submitted today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ไม่ต้องครับ แต่ควรตรวจให้ครบวันนี้

mai tong khrap tae khuan truat hai khrop wan ni

No, but we should finish checking everything today. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

แล้วต้องส่งไม่เกินวันศุกร์ใช่ไหมคะ

laeo tong song mai koen wan suk chai mai kha

And it must be submitted no later than Friday, right? (ordinary polite confirmation, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ จำเป็นต้องให้หัวหน้าลงชื่อก่อน

chai khrap champen tong hai huana long chue kon

Yes. The supervisor has to sign it first. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Confusing exemption with prohibition

❌ พรุ่งนี้คุณต้องไม่มาครับ

Wrong for the intended message 'you don't need to come'; this means you must not come.

✅ พรุ่งนี้คุณไม่ต้องมาครับ

phrung ni khun mai tong ma khrap

You don't need to come tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Putting neutral “should not” in English-like order

❌ คุณควรไม่ขับรถตอนง่วงค่ะ

Nonneutral for the intended basic advice; ordinary Thai places ไม่ before ควร.

✅ คุณไม่ควรขับรถตอนง่วงค่ะ

khun mai khuan khap rot ton nguang kha

You shouldn't drive when sleepy. (ordinary polite advice, female speaker)

3. Omitting ต้อง after จำเป็น before an event

❌ ผมจำเป็นไปธนาคารวันนี้ครับ

Incorrect standard event frame—use จำเป็นต้อง before the verb phrase.

✅ ผมจำเป็นต้องไปธนาคารวันนี้ครับ

phom champen tong pai thanakhan wan ni khrap

I need to go to the bank today. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

4. Attaching แล้ว as a past ending to ต้อง

❌ เมื่อวานฉันต้องแล้วส่งรายงานค่ะ

Incorrect—แล้ว is not a past-tense suffix on ต้อง.

✅ เมื่อวานฉันต้องส่งรายงานก่อนเย็นค่ะ

muea wan chan tong song raingan kon yen kha

Yesterday I had to submit the report before evening. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

5. Translating inferential “must be” with location เป็น

❌ รถเขาอยู่หน้าบ้าน เขาต้องเป็นที่บ้านครับ

Incorrect location predicate—Thai uses อยู่, not identity เป็น, for being at home.

✅ รถเขาอยู่หน้าบ้าน เขาต้องอยู่บ้านแน่ครับ

rot khao yu na ban khao tong yu ban nae khrap

His car is out front; he must be home. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ต้อง presents strong requirement or, with evidence, confident inference; ควร presents advice or appropriateness.
  • จำเป็นต้อง + event explicitly marks necessity; มีความจำเป็นต้อง is formal and bureaucratic.
  • ไม่ต้อง means “need not,” while ต้องไม่ means “must not.” Their scope is opposite.
  • Thai leaves the predicate unchanged. Time expressions, modal stacking, negation order, and context supply interpretations that English often packages through auxiliary inflection.
