Thai ควร + event evaluates an action as advisable, appropriate, or consistent with a norm. It is ordinarily weaker than ต้อง: ควร leaves the addressee some room for judgment, while ต้อง presents an action as required. ควร can also describe a reasonable expectation—what should happen according to a schedule or available conditions.
The modal never changes form. Thai does not have separate equivalents of English should, ought to, and should have built by conjugating ควร; time, reality, and speaker commitment come from context and the rest of the clause.
Advice, norms, and expectation
| Productive slot | Substitution | Speaker's assessment |
|---|---|---|
| actor + ควร + event | คุณ + ควร + พักก่อน | the event is advisable |
| actor + ไม่ควร + event | คุณ + ไม่ควร + ขับต่อ | the event is inadvisable |
| actor + ควรจะ + event | เรา + ควรจะ + แจ้งล่วงหน้า | a contemplated appropriate course |
| subject + ควรจะ + predicate | รถ + ควรจะ + มาถึงทันเวลา | a reasonable expectation |
| generic actor omitted + ควร + event | ควร + เก็บยาให้พ้นมือเด็ก | general recommendation or norm |
ก่อนเดินทางไกล คุณควรตรวจลมยางครับ
kon doen thang klai khun khuan truat lom yang khrap
Before a long trip, you should check the tire pressure. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker)
ผู้ใช้งานไม่ควรบันทึกรหัสผ่านไว้ในเครื่องสาธารณะค่ะ
phu chai ngan mai khuan banthuek rahat phan wai nai khrueang satharana kha
Users should not save passwords on a public computer. (formal-neutral security guidance, female voice)
ตามตาราง รถรับส่งควรจะมาถึงภายในสิบนาทีครับ
tam tarang rot rap song khuan cha ma thueng phainai sip nathi khrap
According to the timetable, the shuttle should arrive within ten minutes. (ordinary polite expectation, male speaker)
The first two examples evaluate conduct; the third predicts an outcome against a standard. No single English translation reveals that difference. Ask whether someone is being guided toward an action or whether a proposition is being compared with what normally follows from a plan.
Where the norm comes from
Advice can come from personal experience, professional expertise, institutional policy, social expectations, or practical reasoning. ควร does not grammatically encode the source. Add phrases such as ตามคำแนะนำของแพทย์ “according to the doctor's advice,” ตามหลักความปลอดภัย “according to safety principles,” or an if-clause when the basis matters.
ถ้าต้องนั่งทำงานนาน คุณควรลุกเดินเป็นระยะค่ะ
tha tong nang tham ngan nan khun khuan luk doen pen raya kha
If you have to work sitting down for a long time, you should get up and walk periodically. (ordinary polite health advice, female speaker)
ตามหลักความปลอดภัย ควรตรวจประตูทุกบานก่อนปิดร้านครับ
tam lak khwam plotphai khuan truat pratu thuk ban kon pit ran khrap
For safety, every door should be checked before the shop closes. (formal-neutral procedure, male voice; generic actor omitted)
Omitting the actor makes a recommendation general; it does not make the clause passive. Thai discourse allows a recoverable or generic participant to remain unspoken. In an actual conversation, social roles can strengthen the practical force: a surgeon's ควรงดอาหาร matters more than a friend's casual suggestion, although ควร itself remains advisory rather than a grammatical must.
ควร versus ต้อง and จำเป็นต้อง
These markers form a useful scale, but no scale eliminates context:
- ควร V — V is wise, appropriate, or expected;
- ต้อง V — V is required by a rule, commitment, or circumstance;
- จำเป็นต้อง V — the necessity of V is made explicit, often (formal-neutral).
คุณควรนำเสื้อกันฝนไปด้วยค่ะ
khun khuan nam suea kan fon pai duai kha
You should take a raincoat with you. (ordinary polite advice, female speaker)
พนักงานต้องสวมบัตรตลอดเวลาที่อยู่ในอาคารครับ
phanak ngan tong suam bat talot wela thi yu nai akhan khrap
Employees must wear their ID badges whenever they are in the building. (formal rule, male voice)
Replacing ต้อง with ควร in the second sentence weakens a binding rule into guidance. Replacing ควร with ต้อง in the first turns practical advice into an obligation. Good Thai therefore chooses modal force before choosing the nearest English word.
See necessity and inference with ต้อง for the stronger modal and จำเป็น as impersonal necessity for explicit objective need.
The relation is not absolute: an employer may phrase an expectation with ควร to sound less commanding, while a worried friend may use ต้อง emphatically. Those are interpersonal choices layered onto the grammatical contrast.
ไม่ควร and the scope of negative advice
Neutral “should not” is ไม่ควร + event. Negation scopes over the appropriateness judgment: the event is judged inadvisable. ควรไม่ + event can deliberately make a negative proposition the recommended option, but it is marked and requires a contrast. A2 learners should use ไม่ควร for ordinary negative advice.
เราไม่ควรตัดสินใจก่อนเห็นข้อมูลทั้งหมดครับ
rao mai khuan tatsinchai kon hen khomun thangmot khrap
We shouldn't decide before seeing all the information. (ordinary polite workplace advice, male speaker)
ช่วงนี้คุณไม่ควรยกของหนักค่ะ
chuang ni khun mai khuan yok khong nak kha
For now, you shouldn't lift anything heavy. (polite health advice, female speaker)
Compare ไม่ควรเปิดประตู “opening is inadvisable” with ต้องไม่เปิดประตู “opening is prohibited.” The negative event is similar, but modal commitment is different. This makes ควร inappropriate for a rule where violation is forbidden.
ควรจะ, prospect, and reasonable expectation
ควรจะ + event is very common. จะ presents the event as contemplated or projected; it does not act as English infinitival to. With advice, ควร and ควรจะ often differ only subtly, the latter sometimes sounding more considered. With a timetable or causal expectation, ควรจะ readily means “should be expected to.”
เราควรจะถามเจ้าของห้องก่อนย้ายเฟอร์นิเจอร์ค่ะ
rao khuan cha tham chao khong hong kon yai foenichoe kha
We should ask the owner before moving the furniture. (ordinary polite considered advice, female speaker)
ถ้าออกจากบ้านตอนนี้ เราควรจะถึงก่อนงานเริ่มครับ
tha ok chak ban ton ni rao khuan cha thueng kon ngan roem khrap
If we leave home now, we should arrive before the event begins. (ordinary polite prediction, male speaker)
The expected reading is not a guarantee. Strong evidence may instead invite epistemic ต้อง; weaker possibility may call for น่าจะ or อาจจะ, treated later in the modality group.
Earlier advice and aspect without inflection
English should have V-ed often describes an earlier recommendation that was not followed. Thai uses unchanged ควร plus an earlier context, and normally states or implies the actual outcome. There is no suffix corresponding to have or -ed.
ตอนนั้นผมควรถามราคาให้ชัดเจนก่อน แต่ผมรีบตกลงครับ
ton nan phom khuan tham rakha hai chatchen kon tae phom rip toklong khrap
At that point I should have clarified the price first, but I agreed too quickly. (ordinary polite reflection, male speaker)
แล้ว can mark a changed situation or current relevance; it is not attached directly after ควร as a past ending. Likewise, bare กำลังควร is not a neutral progressive. Put กำลัง on the unfolding event and keep ควร inside the proposition it evaluates.
ฉันกำลังแก้รายงานส่วนที่ควรส่งเมื่อวานค่ะ
chan kamlang kae raingan suan thi khuan song muea wan kha
I'm revising the part of the report that should have been submitted yesterday. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; progressive on แก้)
ตอนนี้ทุกคนมาครบแล้ว เราควรเริ่มประชุมได้แล้วครับ
ton ni thuk khon ma khrop laeo rao khuan roem prachum dai laeo khrap
Everyone is here now; we should be able to start the meeting. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; present readiness)
The forms around ควร contribute their own meanings. Thai stacks predicates and particles; it does not turn the next verb into an infinitive or conjugate the modal.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
พรุ่งนี้มีประชุมเช้า เราควรออกกี่โมงคะ
phrung ni mi prachum chao rao khuan ok ki mong kha
We have an early meeting tomorrow. What time should we leave? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ควรออกก่อนเจ็ดโมงครับ รถจะได้ไม่ติดมาก
khuan ok kon chet mong khrap rot cha dai mai tit mak
We should leave before seven so the traffic will not be too heavy. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker; subject omitted recoverably)
ต้องจองรถล่วงหน้าไหมคะ
tong chong rot luang na mai kha
Do we have to reserve a car in advance? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ไม่ต้องครับ แต่ควรแจ้งคนขับคืนนี้
mai tong khrap tae khuan chaeng khon khap khuen ni
No, but we should notify the driver tonight. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
The reply contrasts absence of requirement (ไม่ต้อง) with positive advice (ควร) inside one natural exchange.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding an English-style copula
❌ วันนี้คุณเป็นควรหยุดงานค่ะ
Incorrect—ควร already heads the modal frame; Thai does not insert เป็น for English ‘be supposed to.’
✅ คุณควรพักอยู่บ้านวันนี้ค่ะ
khun khuan phak yu ban wan ni kha
You should rest at home today. (ordinary polite advice, female speaker)
2. Reversing neutral negative advice
❌ เราควรไม่ส่งข้อมูลนี้ครับ
Marked scope and wrong for the intended ordinary ‘we should not send this information.’
✅ เราไม่ควรส่งข้อมูลนี้ทางแชตครับ
rao mai khuan song khomun ni thang chaet khrap
We shouldn't send this information through chat. (ordinary polite workplace advice, male speaker)
3. Weakening a binding prohibition
❌ ผู้โดยสารไม่ควรวางสัมภาระขวางทางออกฉุกเฉินค่ะ
Wrong force for an intended binding rule—ควร expresses advice, not prohibition.
✅ ผู้โดยสารต้องไม่วางสัมภาระขวางทางออกฉุกเฉินค่ะ
phu doisan tong mai wang samphara khwang thang ok chukchoen kha
Passengers must not place baggage where it blocks an emergency exit. (formal safety prohibition, female voice)
4. Forcing a progressive onto the judgment
❌ ตอนนี้ผมกำลังควรโทรหาเขาครับ
Incorrect neutral aspect—ควร is an evaluation, not the unfolding event marked by กำลัง.
✅ ตอนนี้ผมกำลังคิดว่าควรโทรหาเขาไหมครับ
ton ni phom kamlang khit wa khuan tho ha khao mai khrap
I'm now thinking about whether I should call him. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; progressive on คิด)
5. Attaching แล้ว as a past suffix
❌ เมื่อวานฉันควรแล้วส่งข้อความค่ะ
Incorrect—แล้ว is not a past-tense ending on ควร.
✅ เมื่อวานฉันควรส่งข้อความบอกเขาก่อนค่ะ
muea wan chan khuan song khokhwam bok khao kon kha
Yesterday I should have messaged him first. (ordinary polite reflection, female speaker; earlier time from เมื่อวาน)
Key Takeaways
- ควร + event presents advice, appropriateness, a norm, or a reasonable expectation.
- ต้อง is stronger: use it when an event is required, not merely recommended.
- ไม่ควร V is neutral negative advice; ต้องไม่ V makes nonperformance mandatory.
- ควร remains unchanged. จะ, time expressions, aspect, outcome, and discourse supply distinctions English often encodes in modal verb forms.
