อยาก plus Bare Verb

Thai อยาก + bare predicate expresses a desire whose event is normally carried out by the subject of อยาก: ฉันอยากพัก “I want to rest,” ผมอยากไปซื้อกาแฟ “I want to go buy coffee.” The following predicate has no infinitive form and no agreement; it looks exactly as it would in an independent Thai clause.

When another person or thing belongs to the desired event, Thai normally uses อยากให้ + participant + predicate: ฉันอยากให้เพื่อนมา “I want my friend to come.” This contrast between shared and different subjects is more important than matching English want, want to, and want someone to word for word.

Same-subject desire

With the basic frame, the subject of อยาก controls the understood subject of the following event.

ปีนี้ผมอยากหัดขับรถครับ

pi ni phom yak hat khap rot khrap

This year I want to learn to drive. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; ผม learns and drives)

ฉันอยากเดินไปซื้อกาแฟหน้าปากซอยค่ะ

chan yak doen pai sue kafae na pak soi kha

I want to walk over and buy coffee by the entrance to the lane. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; one subject throughout the chain)

In the second example, อยาก selects an entire motion-purpose chain. The speaker walks, moves away or onward, and buys. An English rendering may use infinitival to before the desired activity and another linker such as and or to inside it, but Thai expresses the links through unchanged predicates and iconic order.

💡
After subject + อยาก + event, carry the subject forward through the event unless a construction such as ให้ + participant explicitly introduces another actor.

Productive slots after อยาก

The event slot can contain a simple predicate or a longer, internally organized chain.

Desire frameProductive event slotActor of the eventTypical meaning
อยาก + activityพัก / เรียน / ลองทำsubject of อยากwant to rest/learn/try
อยาก + motion-purposeไปซื้อของsubject of อยากwant to go buy something
อยาก + directional chainเดินเข้ามาดูsubject of อยากwant to walk in and look
อยากให้ + person + eventให้ทีมส่งแผนperson after ให้want the team to submit
อยากให้ + thing + changeให้อากาศเย็นลงthing after ให้ changeswant the weather to cool
อยากได้ + noun phraseได้ห้องเงียบ สักห้องsubject of อยาก receives or haswant a quiet room

The bare slot is not an English infinitive position. Thai allows several predicates there because each adds activity, direction, purpose, manner, or result to one desired event.

A different desired actor requires ให้

Compare the actor in the following minimal pair:

ผู้จัดการอยากเสนอแผนใหม่ครับ

phu chatkan yak sanoe phaen mai khrap

The manager wants to propose a new plan. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; manager proposes)

ผู้จัดการอยากให้ทีมเสนอแผนใหม่ครับ

phu chatkan yak hai thim sanoe phaen mai khrap

The manager wants the team to propose a new plan. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; team proposes)

ให้ opens the desired situation, and ทีม supplies the subject of เสนอ. The manager's desire does not guarantee that the team actually proposes anything. Desiderative complements are nonfactual: they describe the world someone wants, not an attained result.

เราอยากให้อากาศเย็นลงก่อนวันงานค่ะ

rao yak hai akat yen long kon wan ngan kha

We want the weather to cool down before the event. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; desired change of state)

💡
อยากให้ does not itself mean that the wanter causes the event. It introduces a desired proposition. Context can turn an utterance to a listener into a tactful request, but the grammar still expresses desire.

Direction and participant shifts inside a longer complement

Directionals retain their own viewpoint meanings inside desire. มา presents motion toward the relevant center; ไป presents motion away or onward.

ผมอยากให้คุณเอาแบบฟอร์มมาส่งที่โต๊ะนี้ครับ

phom yak hai khun ao baep fom ma song thi to ni khrap

I'd like you to bring the form over and submit it at this desk. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; คุณ carries out the lower chain toward the speaker's location)

The participant after ให้ performs เอา...มา and ส่ง. This is not one undifferentiated “infinitive complement”: เอา contributes handling, มา deictic direction, and ส่ง the purpose or result action. A fluent English translation compresses several Thai predicates.

อยากได้ selects a desired thing

With an event predicate, อยาก means “want to do or become...”. With ได้ + noun phrase, the conventional frame อยากได้ presents something wanted for acquisition, possession, or availability.

ฉันอยากได้ห้องเงียบ ๆ สักห้องค่ะ

chan yak dai hong ngiap ngiap sak hong kha

I'd like a quiet room. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; desired accommodation)

ฉันอยากพักในห้องเงียบ ๆ ค่ะ

chan yak phak nai hong ngiap ngiap kha

I want to rest in a quiet room. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; desired activity)

The first selects a desired entity; the second selects an event. Do not analyze ได้ here as a past-tense marker. It contributes the conventional acquisition or availability meaning of อยากได้.

อยากจะ, time, and register

อยากจะ + event is also common. จะ can make the projected action more explicit and often occurs when a speaker is about to state a wish, intention, or polite conversational move. It is not obligatory future tense.

ผมอยากจะขอคำแนะนำเรื่องหางานครับ

phom yak cha kho kham nae nam rueang ha ngan khrap

I'd like to ask for advice about finding work. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; softened preface)

Plain อยาก is neutral in everyday speech. ต้องการ is common when a need or desired object is stated more formally; ประสงค์จะ is (formal) and typical of official or administrative writing. These are register alternatives, not corrected versions of ordinary อยาก.

Time expressions and aspectual predicates frame the desire without changing อยาก or the following event:

ฉันอยากเรียนทำขนมมานานแล้วค่ะ

chan yak rian tham khanom ma nan laeo kha

I've wanted to learn baking for a long time. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; continuing desire up to now)

เมื่อก่อนผมเคยอยากย้ายงาน แต่ตอนนี้ไม่อยากแล้วครับ

muea kon phom khoei yak yai ngan tae ton ni mai yak laeo khrap

I used to want to change jobs, but now I don't anymore. (ordinary polite reflection, male speaker)

เคย presents prior experience, while มา...แล้ว presents a span reaching the current viewpoint. Neither is a general past-tense conjugation. The predicates อยาก, เรียน, ทำ, and ย้าย remain invariant.

Negation changes scope

The most natural way to deny the desire is ไม่อยาก + event. To desire freedom from an obligation, place ไม่ต้อง inside the desired event.

พรุ่งนี้ฉันไม่อยากไปประชุมค่ะ

phrung ni chan mai yak pai prachum kha

I don't want to go to the meeting tomorrow. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; desire denied)

พรุ่งนี้ฉันอยากไม่ต้องไปประชุมค่ะ

phrung ni chan yak mai tong pai prachum kha

I wish I didn't have to go to the meeting tomorrow. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; desired absence of obligation)

This is a real semantic contrast, not free word order. Thai places ไม่ where its scope begins; it does not copy English auxiliary do. With another actor, compare ไม่อยากให้เขารอ “do not want him to wait” and อยากให้เขาไม่ต้องรอ “want him not to have to wait.”

💡
Do not translate negative English from left to right. First decide whether you deny the desire, the obligation, or the lower event; then place ไม่ before that predicate or modal.

Complement versus coordination or compound

อยาก selects the desired event as its complement. A following go-purpose chain such as ไปซื้อของ is internally ordered: motion enables the purpose activity. Coordination instead presents independent assertions, often separated by แล้ว or a clearer clause boundary. Lexicalized items must also be learned on their own merits; อยากได้ is a conventional acquisition frame, but that does not turn every following verb into part of one dictionary word.

The practical tests are participant continuity and semantic dependency. If the later predicate answers “what does this subject want to happen?”, it fills the desire slot. If it advances a separate assertion, it is coordination. See shared-subject chains for participant tracking across longer events.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two friends plan a short holiday:

วันหยุดนี้คุณอยากไปไหนคะ

wan yut ni khun yak pai nai kha

Where would you like to go this holiday? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ผมอยากไปเดินเล่นริมทะเลครับ

phom yak pai doen len rim thale khrap

I'd like to go for a walk by the sea. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

อยากให้ฉันจองโรงแรมให้ไหมคะ

yak hai chan chong rongraem hai mai kha

Would you like me to book the hotel for you? (ordinary polite offer, female speaker; ฉัน books)

ถ้าได้ก็อยากให้จองใกล้ชายหาดครับ

tha dai ko yak hai chong klai chai hat khrap

If possible, I'd like you to book somewhere near the beach. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; actor recoverable)

Common Mistakes

1. Repeating the controlled subject

❌ ฉันอยากฉันเรียนทำอาหารค่ะ

Incorrect English-style subject repetition inside a same-subject desire complement.

✅ ฉันอยากเรียนทำอาหารไทยค่ะ

chan yak rian tham ahan thai kha

I want to learn to cook Thai food. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

2. Omitting ให้ before a different actor

❌ ผู้จัดการอยากทีมส่งแผนใหม่ครับ

Incorrect—the manager does not perform ส่ง, so the team needs to be introduced by ให้.

✅ ผู้จัดการอยากให้ทีมส่งแผนใหม่พรุ่งนี้ครับ

phu chatkan yak hai thim song phaen mai phrung ni khrap

The manager wants the team to send a new plan tomorrow. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

3. Inserting an English-style infinitive sequence

❌ ผมอยากไปที่จะซื้อกาแฟครับ

Incorrect for the ordinary motion-purpose chain; ที่จะ is not inserted as a translation of English to.

✅ ผมอยากเดินไปซื้อกาแฟครับ

phom yak doen pai sue kafae khrap

I want to walk over to buy coffee. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

The longer form อยากที่จะ... can occur in elaborated Thai, so it is not globally ungrammatical. The error above is mechanically inserting ที่จะ between the motion predicate and its purpose. There is no one-to-one infinitive marker.

4. Adding ได้ solely to create a past form

❌ เมื่อก่อนผมได้อยากย้ายงานครับ

Incorrect for the intended past desire; ได้ is not a past conjugation of อยาก.

✅ เมื่อก่อนผมเคยอยากย้ายงานครับ

muea kon phom khoei yak yai ngan khrap

I used to want to change jobs. (ordinary polite reflection, male speaker)

5. Putting negation after the desired event

❌ ฉันอยากไปประชุมไม่ค่ะ

Incorrect English-influenced negative placement for ‘I don't want to attend the meeting.’

✅ ฉันไม่อยากไปประชุมบ่ายนี้ค่ะ

chan mai yak pai prachum bai ni kha

I don't want to attend the meeting this afternoon. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • อยาก + event normally shares one subject across wanting and the desired event.
  • อยากให้ + participant + event introduces a different actor or holder of the desired situation.
  • อยากได้ + noun phrase selects a desired thing; อยากจะ does not simply equal future tense.
  • Aspect, deixis, and negation contribute where they occur. Thai predicates remain invariant, and adjacent verbs must be diagnosed as complement, internal serial chain, coordination, or conventional lexical frame.
