Thai ช่วย + predicate can describe genuine assistance—เขาช่วยยกโต๊ะ “he helps lift the table”—or turn an instruction into an ordinary polite request—ช่วยเปิดประตูหน่อยค่ะ “please open the door.” The following predicate is an unchanged Thai verb, not an infinitive. Context, participant structure, and request particles tell you whether ช่วย contributes literal help, cooperative action, or request framing.
English often uses help (to) do or please. Thai uses the same ordered construction for both, which is why translating ช่วย as exactly one English word causes trouble.
One subject helps carry out an event
หลังเลิกงานผมช่วยเพื่อนย้ายโต๊ะครับ
lang loek ngan phom chuai phuean yai to khrap
After work I helped my friend move the table. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; friend is the person helped)
The participant after ช่วย identifies the person receiving assistance. ผม performs the helping and normally participates in, enables, or supports the moving; เพื่อน is centrally involved in the moving task too.
พี่ช่วยฉันตรวจตัวเลขอีกรอบค่ะ
phi chuai chan truat tua lek ik rop kha
Phi helped me check the figures once more. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
เด็ก ๆ ช่วยกันเก็บเก้าอี้หลังงานครับ
dek dek chuai kan kep kao i lang ngan khrap
The children worked together to put away the chairs after the event. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; กัน marks collaborative participation)
ช่วยกัน + predicate presents a group as acting cooperatively. It does not mean that every participant performs every physical substep identically; it packages their contributions as a joint task.
The productive slots
| Frame | Productive substitution | Usual function |
|---|---|---|
| subject + ช่วย + person + event | ช่วยเพื่อนยกกล่อง | assist a named person |
| subject + ช่วย + event | ช่วยจัดห้อง | contribute to a recoverable task |
| ช่วยกัน + event | ช่วยกันตรวจเอกสาร | perform collaboratively |
| ช่วย + event + หน่อย | ช่วยปิดหน้าต่างหน่อย | ordinary softened request |
| ช่วย + person + ด้วย | ช่วยคุณยายด้วย | help a person; event inferred |
| ช่วยให้ + participant + state/event | ช่วยให้เด็กเข้าใจ | help bring about a lower event |
The table exposes constructional slots rather than interchangeable word strings. หน่อย softens a bounded request; กัน builds group cooperation; ให้ explicitly introduces a participant in a resulting event.
Assistance versus a polite request
Compare a report about help with an utterance directed to the person expected to act:
เมื่อเช้าคุณนิดช่วยจัดเอกสารก่อนประชุมค่ะ
muea chao khun nit chuai chat ekkasan kon prachum kha
This morning Khun Nit helped organize the documents before the meeting. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; actual assistance)
คุณนิดคะ ช่วยจัดเอกสารก่อนประชุมหน่อยค่ะ
khun nit kha chuai chat ekkasan kon prachum noi kha
Khun Nit, please organize the documents before the meeting. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
The second example has direct address, request intonation, หน่อย, and final ค่ะ. It need not imply that the speaker is already doing the task and needs assistance; ช่วย has become a conventional request frame. It is polite-neutral, not formal ceremonial language.
The request-frame guide compares this pattern with ขอ, direct imperatives, and register-sensitive softening.
ช่วยส่งลิงก์ประชุมมาให้ผมหน่อยครับ
chuai song ling prachum ma hai phom noi khrap
Please send me the meeting link. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; direction and recipient follow the requested action)
This longer chain retains distinct contributions: ส่ง send, มา toward the speaker, and ให้ผม to/for me. English compresses the chain into send me.
Different participants with ช่วยให้
When something facilitates another participant's state or action, ช่วยให้ + participant + predicate makes that lower role explicit.
ตัวอย่างนี้ช่วยให้นักเรียนเข้าใจกฎง่ายขึ้นค่ะ
tuayang ni chuai hai nakrian khao chai kot ngai khuen kha
This example helps students understand the rule more easily. (formal-neutral educational explanation, female speaker)
การพักสั้น ๆ ช่วยให้ผมมีสมาธิขึ้นครับ
kan phak san san chuai hai phom mi samathi khuen khrap
A short break helps me concentrate better. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
The example or break does not literally join the students' or speaker's action as a co-agent. ให้ introduces the facilitated result. Contrast literal assistance ครูช่วยนักเรียนอ่านโจทย์, where the teacher directly helps the students read the problem.
Aspect, time, and negation
Thai keeps every predicate invariant:
ตอนนี้พนักงานกำลังช่วยลูกค้ากรอกแบบฟอร์มอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni phanak ngan kamlang chuai luk kha krok baep fom yu kha
The employee is helping a customer fill in the form now. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; ongoing assistance)
เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ช่วยย้ายของครับ เพราะต้องดูแลลูก
muea wan phom mai dai chuai yai khong khrap phro tong dulae luk
Yesterday I didn't help move the things because I had to look after my child. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; assistance did not occur)
Initial ไม่ได้ denies participation in the helping event. To request that someone refrain, Thai usually negates the lower event or uses a prohibitive frame rather than copying English auxiliary order.
ช่วยอย่าส่งไฟล์นี้ต่อเลยนะคะ
chuai aya song fai ni to loei na kha
Please don't forward this file. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; อย่า scopes over forwarding)
ช่วยอย่า... occurs in polite appeals, especially when the requested non-action matters. For a direct prohibition, ห้าม is stronger. Do not build forms such as ทำไม่ช่วยส่ง from English do not help send.
Complement, coordination, and lexicalization
In ช่วยเพื่อนยกโต๊ะ, the assistance predicate selects the task and links participants across it. Coordination presents independent actions:
ผมช่วยจัดห้อง แล้วเพื่อนก็ไปซื้ออาหารครับ
phom chuai chat hong laeo phuean ko pai sue ahan khrap
I helped arrange the room, and then my friend went to buy food. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; two clauses with different subjects)
The new subject and แล้ว...ก็ create a clause boundary. Established words such as ช่วยเหลือ “assist/support” are lexical combinations; speakers do not freely separate their components as stages of one event. Adjacency alone never proves serialization.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers are preparing a presentation:
ช่วยฉันตรวจสไลด์หน้าสุดท้ายหน่อยได้ไหมคะ
chuai chan truat salai na sutthai noi dai mai kha
Could you help me check the last slide? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมช่วยดูตัวเลขให้
dai khrap diao phom chuai du tua lek hai
Certainly. I'll help check the figures for you. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าเสร็จแล้ว ช่วยส่งไฟล์กลับมาด้วยนะคะ
tha set laeo chuai song fai klap ma duai na kha
When you're finished, please send the file back too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ เราช่วยกันตรวจอีกรอบก่อนส่งดีกว่า
dai khrap rao chuai kan truat ik rop kon song di kwa
All right. We'd better check it together once more before sending it. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting an English infinitive marker
❌ เขาช่วยฉันที่จะยกกล่องค่ะ
Incorrect for the ordinary assistance frame; the task follows as a bare Thai predicate.
✅ เขาช่วยฉันยกกล่องขึ้นรถค่ะ
khao chuai chan yok klong khuen rot kha
He helped me lift the box onto the vehicle. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
2. Repeating the helper as lower subject
❌ ผมช่วยผมเพื่อนตรวจรายงานครับ
Incorrect participant order—the first ผม already supplies the helper, while เพื่อน is the person helped.
✅ ผมช่วยเพื่อนตรวจรายงานครับ
phom chuai phuean truat raingan khrap
I helped my friend check the report. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
3. Treating ช่วย as sufficient politeness by itself
❌ ช่วยเอาน้ำมา
Potentially abrupt as a standalone request to an unfamiliar person; ช่วย alone does not encode the full social tone.
✅ ช่วยเอาน้ำมาให้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
chuai ao nam ma hai noi dai mai kha
Could you please bring me some water? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
4. Putting English negation after the requested event
❌ ช่วยส่งไฟล์ไม่ค่ะ
Incorrect—ไม่ cannot follow the event as an English-style sentence negative.
✅ ช่วยอย่าส่งไฟล์นี้ต่อเลยค่ะ
chuai aya song fai ni to loei kha
Please don't forward this file. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
5. Confusing assistance with a facilitated result
❌ ยานี้ช่วยฉันนอนหลับค่ะ
Awkward for the intended causal meaning that the medicine makes sleep easier; the medicine is not a co-agent helping directly.
✅ ยานี้ช่วยให้ฉันนอนหลับง่ายขึ้นค่ะ
ya ni chuai hai chan non lap ngai khuen kha
This medicine helps me fall asleep more easily. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; facilitated result)
Key Takeaways
- ช่วย + person + event links a helper, the person helped, and an unchanged task predicate.
- ช่วย + event + หน่อยครับ/ค่ะ is a conventional ordinary-polite request frame.
- ช่วยกัน packages joint effort; ช่วยให้ + participant + event/state presents facilitation.
- Aspect and negation take scope by position; no verb conjugates and no English infinitive marker is inserted.
