Thai การ can place an event, action, or process into a noun-phrase slot: เดินทาง “travel” becomes การเดินทาง “travel/the act of traveling,” and ส่งสินค้า “deliver goods” becomes การส่งสินค้า “the delivery of goods.” The underlying verb does not acquire a noun ending. Instead, การ precedes a verb or verb phrase and lets the resulting unit function as a subject, object, complement, or modifier inside a larger noun phrase.
English uses -ing, derived nouns such as delivery, or infinitives in comparable positions. Thai makes a different structural choice. The event nominal can retain the verb's objects and other dependents, but complex propositions with an overt subject often favor การที่ + clause. ความ generally nominalizes properties, states, or abstract concepts; lexical convention creates important exceptions, so the contrast is semantic rather than automatic.
การ packages an action or process
The core pattern is การ + verb phrase. The following verb remains unchanged and retains its lexical meaning.
การออกกำลังกายตอนเช้าช่วยให้ผมนอนหลับดีขึ้นครับ
kan ok kamlang kai ton chao chuai hai phom non lap di khuen khrap
Exercising in the morning helps me sleep better. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)
บริษัทสนับสนุนการทำงานจากบ้านสองวันต่อสัปดาห์ค่ะ
borisat sanapsanun kan tham ngan chak ban song wan to sapda kha
The company supports working from home two days per week. (formal-polite workplace information, female speaker)
การส่งสินค้าให้ลูกค้าตรงเวลาเป็นเรื่องสำคัญครับ
kan song sinkha hai luk kha trong wela pen rueang samkhan khrap
Delivering goods to customers on time is important. (formal business statement, male speaker)
The whole units การออกกำลังกายตอนเช้า and การส่งสินค้าให้ลูกค้าตรงเวลา occupy subject position. Inside the latter, สินค้า remains the theme of ส่ง, ลูกค้า remains the recipient after benefactive/recipient ให้, and ตรงเวลา modifies the delivery event. Nominalization does not erase valency.
Noun-phrase distribution
Once nominalized, an event can occur in positions that take nouns. It can be a clause subject, the object of an attitude or policy predicate, a complement after a relator, or the modifying part of a larger noun expression.
| Noun-phrase role | Thai model | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| subject | การเดินทางช่วงเช้าใช้เวลานาน | morning travel takes a long time |
| object | บริษัทสนับสนุนการฝึกอบรม | the company supports training |
| after a relator | ก่อนการประชุม | before the meeting |
| noun modifier | ขั้นตอนการสมัคร | application procedure |
| event-classifier phrase | การประชุมหนึ่งครั้ง | one meeting event |
การเดินทางเข้าเมืองช่วงเช้าใช้เวลานานค่ะ
kan doen thang khao mueang chuang chao chai wela nan kha
Traveling into the city in the morning takes a long time. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
เราจะคุยรายละเอียดก่อนการประชุมครับ
rao cha khui railaiat kon kan prachum khrap
We'll discuss the details before the meeting. (ordinary polite workplace statement, male speaker)
กรุณาอ่านขั้นตอนการสมัครให้ครบค่ะ
karuna an khanton kan samak hai khrop kha
Please read all the application steps. (formal-polite instruction, female speaker)
English articles do not map directly onto การ. It is not an article meaning the or a. Countable event occurrences still need an appropriate classifier construction, such as การประชุมหนึ่งครั้ง “one meeting.”
Arguments, modifiers, and embedded complexity
Bare การ + verb phrase readily retains an object, recipient, location, or manner expression.
การตรวจเอกสารของผู้สมัครแต่ละคนใช้เวลาประมาณสิบนาทีครับ
kan truat ekkasan khong phusamak tae la khon chai wela praman sip nathi khrap
Checking each applicant's documents takes about ten minutes. (formal administrative statement, male speaker)
รัฐบาลประกาศแผนการปรับปรุงระบบขนส่งค่ะ
ratthaban prakat phaen kan prapprung rabop khonsong kha
The government announced a plan to improve the transport system. (formal news register, female voice)
In the second target, การปรับปรุงระบบขนส่ง modifies แผน by identifying what the plan concerns. Thai does not need an English of before the event phrase.
When the nominalized content is a fuller proposition with its own overt subject, การที่ + clause is often the clearer construction:
การที่บริษัทแจ้งล่วงหน้าช่วยให้ลูกค้าเตรียมตัวได้ค่ะ
kan thi borisat chaeng luang na chuai hai luk kha triam tua dai kha
The fact that the company gives advance notice helps customers prepare. (formal explanatory statement, female speaker)
Here บริษัท is the subject inside the nominalized clause. Treating การที่ as a clausal nominalizing frame avoids squeezing the company directly between bare การ and a verb as if it were the verb itself.
Negation inside an event nominal
Negation follows การ and precedes the event predicate it denies: การไม่ตอบ “not responding/the failure to respond.” This order preserves the entire negative event as a noun phrase.
การไม่ตอบอีเมลทำให้ลูกค้ากังวลครับ
kan mai top imen tham hai luk kha kangwon khrap
Not replying to the email made the customer worried. (formal explanatory statement, male speaker)
ฝ่ายบริหารกังวลเรื่องการส่งงานไม่ทันกำหนดค่ะ
fai borihan kangwon rueang kan song ngan mai than kamnot kha
Management is concerned about failing to submit the work by the deadline. (formal workplace report, female speaker)
The second event contains internal result negation ส่งงานไม่ทัน “submit the work not in time.” ไม่ is not moved before การ, because it negates the embedded predicate, not the larger clause containing the noun phrase.
การ versus ความ
A productive first distinction is:
- การ packages an action, event, or process: การเดินทาง “travel,” การประชุม “meeting,” การเปลี่ยนแปลง “change.”
- ความ packages a property, state, or abstract concept: ความสุข “happiness,” ความปลอดภัย “safety,” ความเข้าใจ “understanding.”
การเรียนภาษาใหม่ต้องใช้ความอดทนค่ะ
kan rian phasa mai tong chai khwam otthon kha
Learning a new language requires patience. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
ความเข้าใจระหว่างทีมสำคัญต่อการทำงานครับ
khwam khao chai rawang thim samkhan to kan tham ngan khrap
Mutual understanding between teams is important for work. (formal workplace statement, male speaker)
The contrast is not simply “verbs take การ, adjectives take ความ,” because Thai property words are predicates and lexicalization matters. ความช่วยเหลือ “assistance” can denote something provided, while การช่วยเหลือ foregrounds the act or process of helping. การศึกษา is the conventional word for education/study, while ความรู้ means knowledge. Learn frequent nouns as lexical items alongside the productive tendency.
See property nominalization with ความ for the state and quality side of the contrast.
โครงการนี้เน้นการช่วยเหลือผู้สูงอายุในชุมชนค่ะ
khrongkan ni nen kan chuai luea phu sung ayu nai chumchon kha
This project emphasizes helping older people in the community. (formal project description, female voice; process reading)
ผู้สมัครสามารถขอความช่วยเหลือที่เคาน์เตอร์ได้ครับ
phusamak samat kho khwam chuai luea thi khaotoe dai khrap
Applicants can request assistance at the counter. (formal-polite service information, male speaker; assistance as a provided resource)
Time and aspect inside nominalized material
An event nominal may contain a time phrase: การประชุมเมื่อวาน “yesterday's meeting.” More clause-like combinations with an overt subject and ongoing aspect are clearer with การที่.
การประชุมเมื่อวานใช้เวลานานกว่าที่คาดครับ
kan prachum muea wan chai wela nan kwa thi khat khrap
Yesterday's meeting took longer than expected. (formal-polite report, male speaker)
การที่ทีมกำลังปรับระบบอยู่ทำให้ตอบลูกค้าได้ช้าลงค่ะ
kan thi thim kamlang prap rabop yu tham hai top luk kha dai cha long kha
The fact that the team is currently adjusting the system is making customer responses slower. (formal explanatory report, female speaker)
Do not invent a conjugated nominal form. Time and aspect remain separate expressions inside the nominalized material, and not every elaborate finite-looking chain sounds equally natural after bare การ.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
An applicant asks about an online procedure:
ขั้นตอนการสมัครใช้เวลานานไหมคะ
khanton kan samak chai wela nan mai kha
Does the application process take long? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
การกรอกข้อมูลใช้ประมาณสิบนาทีครับ
kan krok khomun chai praman sip nathi khrap
Entering the information takes about ten minutes. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าหยุดกลางทาง ข้อมูลที่บันทึกไว้จะหายไหมคะ
tha yut klang thang khomun thi banthuek wai cha hai mai kha
If I stop midway, will the saved information disappear? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ไม่หายครับ ระบบรองรับการบันทึกอัตโนมัติ
mai hai khrap rabop rongrap kan banthuek attanomat
No. The system supports automatic saving. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Using การ for a basic property concept
❌ การสุขของครอบครัวสำคัญค่ะ
Incorrect—the conventional abstract noun for happiness uses ความ.
✅ ความสุขของครอบครัวสำคัญมากค่ะ
khwam suk khong khropkhrua samkhan mak kha
The family's happiness is very important. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
2. Using ความ for an ordinary action
❌ ความเดินทางช่วงฝนตกใช้เวลานานครับ
Incorrect—the process of traveling is nominalized with การ.
✅ การเดินทางช่วงฝนตกใช้เวลานานครับ
kan doen thang chuang fon tok chai wela nan khrap
Traveling during rainy weather takes a long time. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
3. Treating การ as an English indefinite article
❌ เรามีหนึ่งการประชุมตอนบ่ายค่ะ
Incorrect count order for ‘one meeting’; การ is not an article.
✅ เรามีการประชุมหนึ่งครั้งตอนบ่ายค่ะ
rao mi kan prachum nueng khrang ton bai kha
We have one meeting in the afternoon. (ordinary polite workplace statement, female speaker)
4. Placing event negation before การ
❌ ไม่การส่งเอกสารทำให้เกิดปัญหาครับ
Incorrect—ไม่ must occur inside the nominalized event before its predicate.
✅ การไม่ส่งเอกสารตามกำหนดทำให้เกิดปัญหาครับ
kan mai song ekkasan tam kamnot tham hai koet panha khrap
Not submitting the documents by the deadline causes problems. (formal statement, male speaker)
5. Inserting an overt subject directly after bare การ
❌ การบริษัทเปลี่ยนนโยบายกะทันหันสร้างปัญหาค่ะ
Incorrect—the full proposition with overt บริษัท requires the clausal frame การที่.
✅ การที่บริษัทเปลี่ยนนโยบายกะทันหันสร้างปัญหาค่ะ
kan thi borisat plian nayobai kathanhan sang panha kha
The fact that the company changed policy suddenly caused problems. (formal statement, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- การ + verb phrase packages an action, process, or event so it can occupy noun-phrase positions.
- The embedded verb retains objects, recipients, locations, manner, and internal negation.
- การที่ + clause is useful for a fuller proposition with an overt subject or complex aspect.
- การ tends toward events; ความ tends toward properties and states, but established lexical nouns must be learned.
- การ is not an English article, infinitive marker, plural marker, or verb conjugation.
