Thai การ packages an action, process, or event as a noun phrase: เดินทาง “travel” becomes การเดินทาง “travel/the journey,” and ตรวจสอบข้อมูล “check the information” becomes การตรวจสอบข้อมูล “checking the information/the information check.” The lexical verb remains uninflected. What changes is the grammatical perspective: the event itself can now be a subject, object, topic, or modifier. For its clause-level consequences, see Event Nominalization with การ.
Descriptions differ over whether productive การ is best called a prefix, a nominalizer, or a grammaticalized head noun. Learners do not need to force one analysis. The robust facts are its position before the base, its event-oriented meaning, the noun-like distribution of the result, and real lexical restrictions.
From predicate to event noun
The core pattern is การ + verb or verb phrase. Natural Thai writes the result continuously inside the phrase; the spaces in RTGS reveal components only for reading.
| Base | Nominalization | Event viewed as |
|---|---|---|
| เดินทาง | การเดินทาง | travel/journey |
| ประชุม | การประชุม | meeting as an event |
| ตัดสินใจ | การตัดสินใจ | decision-making/a decision |
| ตรวจสอบข้อมูล | การตรวจสอบข้อมูล | the process of checking data |
| ส่งเอกสารให้ลูกค้า | การส่งเอกสารให้ลูกค้า | sending documents to the client |
เราเดินทางตอนเช้าค่ะ
rao doen thang ton chao kha
We travel in the morning. (ordinary polite clause, female speaker; เดินทาง is the predicate)
การเดินทางตอนเช้าใช้เวลาน้อยกว่าค่ะ
kan doen thang ton chao chai wela noi kwa kha
Traveling in the morning takes less time. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; การเดินทาง is the subject)
พรุ่งนี้เราประชุมตอนเก้าโมงครับ
phrung ni rao prachum ton kao mong khrap
Tomorrow we meet at nine. (ordinary polite clause, male speaker)
การประชุมพรุ่งนี้เลื่อนไปเป็นสิบโมงครับ
kan prachum phrung ni luean pai pen sip mong khrap
Tomorrow's meeting has been moved to ten. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; the meeting is a noun phrase)
English often uses an -ing form in translations, but การ is not an English gerund ending. Thai nominalization creates its own constituent and distribution.
Internal arguments stay inside
A การ nominalization can preserve the verb's object, recipient, location, manner, and other dependents. These elements follow the verb in their ordinary Thai order.
การตรวจสอบข้อมูลอย่างละเอียดช่วยลดข้อผิดพลาดครับ
kan truat sop khomun yang laiat chuai lot kho phit phlat khrap
Checking the data carefully helps reduce errors. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
บริษัทรับผิดชอบการส่งสินค้าให้ลูกค้าตรงเวลาค่ะ
borisat rap phit chop kan song sinkha hai lukkha trong wela kha
The company is responsible for delivering products to customers on time. (formal-polite statement, female voice)
การตัดสินใจเรื่องนี้ต้องอาศัยข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมครับ
kan tatsin chai rueang ni tong asai khomun phoemtoem khrap
Making this decision requires additional information. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
The participant who performs the action can appear in a ของ phrase where natural: การตัดสินใจของคณะกรรมการ “the committee's decision.” A full proposition with a salient subject often uses การที่ + clause instead.
การที่บริษัทเปลี่ยนกำหนดส่งกะทันหันทำให้ลูกค้าสับสนค่ะ
kan thi borisat plian kamnot song kathanhan tham hai lukkha sapson kha
The fact that the company suddenly changed the delivery date confused customers. (formal-polite clausal nominalization, female voice)
Bare การบริษัทเปลี่ยน... is not the ordinary way to nominalize that full subject–predicate proposition.
Negation and event scope
To nominalize nonoccurrence or a negative action, ไม่ appears inside the event after การ and before the predicate: การไม่ส่งเอกสาร, การไม่เปิดเผยข้อมูล. The negative scope belongs to the embedded event.
การไม่แจ้งล่วงหน้าทำให้ทีมจัดเวลาไม่ได้ครับ
kan mai chaeng luang na tham hai thim chat wela mai dai khrap
Not giving advance notice prevented the team from scheduling. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
นโยบายนี้ห้ามการเปิดเผยข้อมูลส่วนบุคคลค่ะ
nayobai ni ham kan poet phoei khomun suan bukkhon kha
This policy prohibits the disclosure of personal data. (formal-polite statement, female voice)
The second sentence nominalizes a positive event after a prohibition predicate. ห้ามการไม่เปิดเผย... would instead prohibit nondisclosure, reversing the practical result.
Count, determination, and nominal behavior
Once packaged, an event expression can occur after เรื่อง, serve as an object, or be counted by an event classifier such as ครั้ง when the lexical noun permits.
สัปดาห์นี้มีการประชุมสามครั้งค่ะ
sapda ni mi kan prachum sam khrang kha
There are three meetings this week. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker)
การอบรมครั้งนี้เน้นการแก้ปัญหาเฉพาะหน้าครับ
kan oprom khrang ni nen kan kae panha chapho na khrap
This training session focuses on solving immediate problems. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
การ does not mark singular, plural, definiteness, or an English article. ครั้งนี้ identifies one event; สามครั้ง counts occurrences.
Event-oriented การ versus state-oriented ความ
The useful tendency is การ for processes/events and ความ for states/properties. Compare การคิด “the process of thinking” with lexicalized ความคิด “thought/idea,” or การตาย “dying/the event of death” with ความตาย “death as a state or abstract concept.”
การคิดอย่างเป็นระบบช่วยให้แก้โจทย์ได้เร็วขึ้นค่ะ
kan khit yang pen rabop chuai hai kae chot dai reo khuen kha
Systematic thinking helps solve problems faster. (academic-polite statement, female voice)
ความคิดนี้น่าสนใจมากครับ
khwam khit ni na sonchai mak khrap
This idea is very interesting. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
This contrast is productive but not mechanical. Established vocabulary decides many cases. Consult current usage rather than adding a nominalizer by English word class alone.
Lexicalization and register
Some การ forms are conventional domains or lexical nouns rather than fully transparent current events: การบ้าน “homework,” การเงิน “finance,” การเมือง “politics,” and การตลาด “marketing.” A learner cannot recover การบ้าน as “the doing of a house.”
คืนนี้ฉันต้องทำการบ้านให้เสร็จค่ะ
khuen ni chan tong tham kanban hai set kha
I have to finish my homework tonight. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; การบ้าน is lexicalized)
Nominalization is frequent in academic, news, administrative, and technical prose (formal/academic) because it packages events for comparison and reference. It is also ordinary in speech with established nouns such as การประชุม and การเดินทาง. Do not nominalize every verb merely to sound educated.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
หัวข้อนี้เขียนว่าตรวจสอบข้อมูลหรือการตรวจสอบข้อมูลดีคะ
hua kho ni khian wa truat sop khomun rue kan truat sop khomun di kha
Should this heading say ‘check data’ or ‘data checking’? (ordinary polite question, female colleague)
ถ้าเป็นชื่อกระบวนการ ใช้การตรวจสอบข้อมูลครับ
tha pen chue krabuankan chai kan truat sop khomun khrap
If it is the name of a process, use kan truat sop khomun. (ordinary polite reply, male colleague)
แต่ในคำสั่งให้เขียนว่าตรวจสอบข้อมูลใช่ไหมคะ
tae nai kham sang hai khian wa truat sop khomun chai mai kha
But in an instruction, write truat sop khomun, right? (ordinary polite follow-up, female colleague)
ใช่ครับ เพราะตรงนั้นต้องการคำสั่งที่เป็นกริยา
chai khrap phro trong nan tongkan kham sang thi pen kriya
Yes, because that position calls for a verbal instruction. (ordinary polite explanation, male colleague)
Common Mistakes
Treating การ as an English article
❌ ตอนบ่ายเรามีหนึ่งการประชุม
Incorrect English-like article and count order.
✅ ตอนบ่ายเรามีการประชุมหนึ่งครั้งค่ะ
ton bai rao mi kan prachum nueng khrang kha
We have one meeting this afternoon. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
Placing event negation before การ
❌ ไม่การส่งรายงานทำให้โครงการล่าช้า
Incorrect constituent order; event-internal ไม่ follows การ and precedes the predicate.
✅ การไม่ส่งรายงานภายในกำหนดทำให้โครงการล่าช้าครับ
kan mai song raingan phainai kamnot tham hai khrongkan lacha khrap
Not submitting the report by the deadline causes the project to be delayed. (formal-polite statement, male voice)
Inserting an overt subject after bare การ
❌ การบริษัทปิดสาขากะทันหันทำให้ลูกค้าสับสน
Incorrect nominalized-clause boundary before an overt subject.
✅ การที่บริษัทปิดสาขากะทันหันทำให้ลูกค้าสับสนค่ะ
kan thi borisat pit sakha kathanhan tham hai lukkha sapson kha
The fact that the company suddenly closed the branch confused customers. (formal-polite statement, female voice)
Using การ for a basic property
❌ การปลอดภัยของผู้โดยสารสำคัญมาก
Incorrect nominalizer for the property ‘safety.’
✅ ความปลอดภัยของผู้โดยสารสำคัญมากครับ
khwam plotphai khong phu doisan samkhan mak khrap
Passenger safety is very important. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- การ + predicate packages an event or process as a noun phrase without inflecting the verb.
- Objects, recipients, manner, and internal negation stay inside the event in normal Thai order.
- Use การที่ + clause when a fuller proposition with an overt subject must be packaged.
- Productivity coexists with lexicalization; การบ้าน and การเมือง must be learned as words.
