Thai ความ turns many properties and states into nouns: สูง “high” becomes ความสูง “height,” เงียบ “quiet” becomes ความเงียบ “quietness,” and ปลอดภัย “safe” becomes ความปลอดภัย “safety.” A direct property predicate describes someone or something; a ความ expression makes the property itself available as a subject, object, topic, or possessed concept.
The pattern is productive but partly lexical. ความคิด means “thought/idea,” ความรู้ means “knowledge,” and ความรัก means “love,” so “ความ only attaches to English adjectives” is not an adequate rule.
Direct property versus property noun
The basic contrast is structural. A bare property can predicate directly without a copula. Once ความ is added, the result behaves as a noun phrase and needs another predicate to complete a clause.
| Direct predicate | Property noun | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| ห้องนี้เงียบ | ความเงียบของห้องนี้ | describe room / discuss its quietness |
| โต๊ะสูง | ความสูงของโต๊ะ | describe table / measure its height |
| ระบบปลอดภัย | ความปลอดภัยของระบบ | assert safety / analyze safety |
| ทีมพร้อม | ความพร้อมของทีม | assert readiness / evaluate readiness |
ห้องประชุมชั้นบนเงียบมากค่ะ
hong prachum chan bon ngiap mak kha
The upstairs meeting room is very quiet. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; เงียบ predicates directly)
ความเงียบของห้องประชุมช่วยให้ทุกคนมีสมาธิครับ
khwam ngiap khong hong prachum chuai hai thuk khon mi samathi khrap
The meeting room's quietness helps everyone concentrate. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; ความเงียบ is the subject)
โต๊ะตัวนี้สูงเกินไปค่ะ
to tua ni sung koen pai kha
This table is too high. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
ช่างกำลังวัดความสูงของโต๊ะครับ
chang kamlang wat khwam sung khong to khrap
The technician is measuring the table's height. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
English -ness, -ity, or an abstract noun may translate the result, but Thai ความ is not an inflectional suffix and does not copy English word order.
Dimensions, evaluations, and possessed properties
Properties of size, degree, safety, clarity, and readiness nominalize readily when measured or evaluated. A possessor normally follows with ของ.
รายงานระบุความกว้างของทางเดินไว้ชัดเจนค่ะ
raingan rabu khwam kwang khong thang doen wai chatchen kha
The report specifies the corridor's width clearly. (formal-polite statement, female voice)
เราต้องประเมินความพร้อมของทีมก่อนเริ่มงานครับ
rao tong pramoen khwam phrom khong thim kon roem ngan khrap
We must assess the team's readiness before starting. (formal-polite workplace statement, male speaker)
ลูกค้าให้ความสำคัญกับความปลอดภัยของข้อมูลค่ะ
lukkha hai khwam samkhan kap khwam plotphai khong khomun kha
Customers place importance on data security. (formal-polite business statement, female voice)
The last example contains two ความ expressions: lexicalized ให้ความสำคัญ “give importance” and productive ความปลอดภัยของข้อมูล “data security.” Repeated morphology can be grammatical, but dense formal prose may be clearer when rewritten as a direct clause.
ความ and การ profile different sides
The broad tendency is การ for an event/process and ความ for a state/property. With the same or related base, the choice can produce distinct established meanings.
| การ expression | ความ expression | Contrast |
|---|---|---|
| การคิด | ความคิด | thinking process / thought or idea |
| การตาย | ความตาย | event of dying / death as concept or state |
| การเห็น | ความเห็น | seeing / opinion |
| การรู้ | ความรู้ | act/process of knowing / knowledge |
การคิดก่อนตอบช่วยลดความผิดพลาดได้ครับ
kan khit kon top chuai lot khwam phit phlat dai khrap
Thinking before answering can reduce mistakes. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker; process)
ความคิดของน้องช่วยให้ทีมแก้ปัญหาได้ค่ะ
khwam khit khong nong chuai hai thim kae panha dai kha
The junior colleague's idea helped the team solve the problem. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; lexicalized idea)
พิพิธภัณฑ์จัดนิทรรศการเกี่ยวกับความตายในวรรณกรรม
phiphitthaphan chat nithatsakan kiao kap khwam tai nai wannakam
The museum organized an exhibition about death in literature. (formal statement; abstract concept)
There is no purely logical algorithm for every base. Conventional lexical meaning must be learned. The contrast pages on การ nominalization and broader clause packaging explain why the two nominalizers are asymmetric.
Negative property nouns
ความ + ไม่ + property/predicate can package a negative condition: ความไม่แน่นอน “uncertainty,” ความไม่พอใจ “dissatisfaction,” ความไม่เท่าเทียม “inequality.” This is especially frequent in news, institutional, and academic prose (formal/academic).
ความไม่แน่นอนเรื่องงบประมาณทำให้โครงการล่าช้าครับ
khwam mai naenon rueang ngoppraman tham hai khrongkan lacha khrap
Budget uncertainty delayed the project. (formal-polite report, male speaker)
ฝ่ายบริการได้รับข้อความแสดงความไม่พอใจจากลูกค้าค่ะ
fai borikan dai rap khokhwam sadaeng khwam mai pho chai chak lukkha kha
Customer service received a message expressing dissatisfaction from a customer. (formal-polite report, female voice)
Compare the direct clause ลูกค้าไม่พอใจ “the customer is dissatisfied.” The negative abstract noun is not simply a longer predicate; it occupies a noun slot after แสดง or serves as an argument elsewhere.
Lexicalization beyond simple properties
Frequent ความ nouns should be stored as words: ความจริง “truth,” ความรู้สึก “feeling,” ความช่วยเหลือ “assistance,” ความสัมพันธ์ “relationship,” and ความสามารถ “ability.” Some contain material that also appears as a verb or larger expression.
ขอบคุณสำหรับความช่วยเหลือเมื่อเช้านี้ค่ะ
khop khun samrap khwam chuai luea muea chao ni kha
Thank you for your help this morning. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
ผู้สมัครต้องแสดงความสามารถในการสื่อสารครับ
phu samak tong sadaeng khwam samat nai kan sue san khrap
Applicants must demonstrate communication ability. (formal institutional statement, male voice)
Adding ความ to an unfamiliar base may be interpretable but awkward, specialized, or blocked by an established noun. There is no honest shortcut: check reliable dictionaries and current texts.
Register and density
Nominalization lets writers compare and classify abstractions, so it is prominent in formal and academic prose. Conversation often prefers a direct predicate.
ประตูนี้กว้างพอไหมคะ
pratu ni kwang pho mai kha
Is this doorway wide enough? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ต้องตรวจความกว้างของประตูตามมาตรฐานครับ
tong truat khwam kwang khong pratu tam mattrathan khrap
We must check the doorway's width against the standard. (formal-polite technical reply, male speaker)
The second is not “better Thai”; it changes the property into a measurement object.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ตรงนี้ควรเขียนว่าห้องปลอดภัยหรือความปลอดภัยของห้องคะ
trong ni khuan khian wa hong plotphai rue khwam plotphai khong hong kha
Should this say ‘the room is safe’ or ‘the room's safety’? (ordinary polite question, female colleague)
ถ้าเป็นหัวข้อประเมิน ใช้ความปลอดภัยของห้องครับ
tha pen hua kho pramoen chai khwam plotphai khong hong khrap
If it is an assessment heading, use ‘the room's safety.’ (ordinary polite reply, male colleague)
แต่ในสรุปผลเขียนว่าห้องปลอดภัยได้ใช่ไหมคะ
tae nai sarup phon khian wa hong plotphai dai chai mai kha
But in the results summary, can I write ‘the room is safe’? (ordinary polite follow-up, female colleague)
ได้ครับ แบบนั้นเป็นข้อสรุปที่ตรงกว่า
dai khrap baep nan pen kho sarup thi trong kwa
Yes; that is a more direct conclusion. (ordinary polite reply, male colleague)
Common Mistakes
Using ความ as a copula
❌ ทางเดินนี้ความแคบมาก
Incorrect direct predicate structure; ความแคบ is a noun, not a copula.
✅ ทางเดินนี้แคบมากครับ
thang doen ni khaep mak khrap
This corridor is very narrow. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
Using ความ for an ordinary event
❌ ความเดินทางคืนนี้ใช้เวลาสามชั่วโมง
Incorrect nominalizer choice for the travel event.
✅ การเดินทางคืนนี้ใช้เวลาสามชั่วโมงค่ะ
kan doen thang khuen ni chai wela sam chuamong kha
Tonight's journey takes three hours. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
Putting the property before ความ
❌ ทีมกำลังวัดสูงความของชั้นวาง
Incorrect morpheme and possessor order.
✅ ทีมกำลังวัดความสูงของชั้นวางครับ
thim kamlang wat khwam sung khong chan wang khrap
The team is measuring the shelf's height. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Treating every interpretable coinage as established
❌ ฉันสร้างคำนามด้วยความหน้าคำทุกคำค่ะ
Incorrect strategy: productivity remains constrained by base meaning and lexical convention.
✅ ฉันตรวจคำว่า ความช่วยเหลือ ในพจนานุกรมก่อนใช้ค่ะ
chan truat kham wa khwam chuai luea nai photchananukrom kon chai kha
I checked khwam chuai luea in a dictionary before using it. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- ความ + property/state creates a noun referring to the quality rather than directly predicating it.
- การ/ความ usually contrast event process with state or concept, but lexicalized pairs must be learned.
- Negative ความ forms package conditions such as uncertainty and dissatisfaction.
- Nominalization is useful for measurement and analysis; direct predicates are often clearer in conversation.
