ผู้ as Human Agent Nominalizer

Thai ผู้ + predicate/role forms a noun referring prototypically to a human participant: ผู้ซื้อ “buyer,” ผู้ขาย “seller,” ผู้สมัคร “applicant,” and ผู้ใช้บริการ “service user.” It is especially productive in signs, forms, news, policies, academic prose, and professional role labels (formal/neutral).

“Agent nominalizer” is a useful starting label, but it is not the whole truth. ผู้รับ “recipient,” ผู้ถูกเลือก “person selected,” and ผู้เสียชีวิต “deceased person” do not denote straightforward voluntary agents. The deeper generalization is a socially relevant human participant characterized by the following predicate or role. Related ผู้ที่... patterns are developed as headless human relatives.

Building a role noun

The productive order is ผู้ + predicate, with the predicate's complement following where needed. Natural Thai writes the unit continuously; RTGS spacing is only a reading aid.

StructureResultRole
ผู้ + ซื้อผู้ซื้อbuyer
ผู้ + สมัครผู้สมัครapplicant
ผู้ + ใช้ + บริการผู้ใช้บริการservice user
ผู้ + ให้ + ข้อมูลผู้ให้ข้อมูลinformant/information provider
ผู้ + รับผิดชอบ + โครงการผู้รับผิดชอบโครงการperson responsible for the project

ผู้สมัครทุกคนต้องกรอกแบบฟอร์มออนไลน์ค่ะ

phu samak thuk khon tong krok baep fom onlai kha

All applicants must complete the online form. (formal-polite institutional instruction, female voice)

บริษัทจะติดต่อผู้ซื้อภายในสามวันครับ

borisat cha titto phu sue phainai sam wan khrap

The company will contact the buyer within three days. (formal-polite statement, male voice)

ผู้ให้ข้อมูลขอไม่เปิดเผยชื่อค่ะ

phu hai khomun kho mai poet phoei chue kha

The informant asked not to have their name disclosed. (formal-polite research report, female voice)

The verb remains uninflected. ผู้สมัคร does not change for tense or plural, and it does not encode gender. Time and number come from the sentence.

💡
Read ผู้ as introducing a human role, not as English “-er.” The Thai role may include a full predicate such as ให้ข้อมูล or รับผิดชอบโครงการ.

Internal arguments define the role

The material after ผู้ can be more than one word. ผู้ดูแลระบบ is “system administrator/caretaker,” not merely “carer”; ผู้ส่งเอกสาร is the person who sends the document; ผู้เข้าร่วมประชุม is a meeting participant. The complement narrows the role in ordinary Thai order.

เจ้าหน้าที่กำลังตรวจรายชื่อผู้เข้าร่วมประชุมครับ

chaonathi kamlang truat raichue phu khao ruam prachum khrap

Staff are checking the list of meeting participants. (formal-polite workplace report, male voice)

กรุณาแจ้งชื่อผู้ดูแลระบบให้ฝ่ายเทคนิคทราบค่ะ

karuna chaeng chue phu dulae rabop hai fai theknik sap kha

Please give Technical Support the system administrator's name. (formal-polite request, female voice)

ผู้ส่งพัสดุต้องลงชื่อในช่องนี้ครับ

phu song phatsadu tong long chue nai chong ni khrap

The person sending the parcel must sign in this box. (formal-polite service instruction, male voice)

English may compress these roles into compounds or -er nouns. Thai keeps predicate-first relations inside the role; do not reorder the complement before the action.

Beyond agents: recipient, experiencer, and affected person

Several common ผู้ nouns designate someone affected by an event rather than its controller. ผู้รับ receives, ผู้ป่วย is ill/a patient, ผู้ประสบภัย experiences a disaster, and ผู้ถูกกล่าวหา is accused. This proves that the construction is organized around human reference, not just agency.

ผู้รับต้องแสดงบัตรประชาชนก่อนรับพัสดุค่ะ

phu rap tong sadaeng bat prachachon kon rap phatsadu kha

The recipient must show an ID card before receiving the parcel. (formal-polite instruction, female voice)

ศูนย์พักพิงเปิดรับผู้ประสบภัยตั้งแต่เมื่อคืนครับ

sun phak phing poet rap phu prasop phai tangtae muea khuen khrap

The shelter has admitted disaster victims since last night. (formal-polite news report, male voice)

กฎหมายคุ้มครองสิทธิของผู้ถูกกล่าวหาค่ะ

kotmai khumkhrong sitthi khong phu thuk klao ha kha

The law protects the rights of accused persons. (formal-polite legal statement, female voice)

The passive marker ถูก remains inside ผู้ถูกกล่าวหา. Removing it would produce ผู้กล่าวหา, “the accuser,” and reverse the role.

ผู้, คนที่, and ผู้ที่

Everyday conversation often uses คนที่ + clause where formal prose uses ผู้ที่ + clause or a compact ผู้ noun. คนขายกาแฟ is an ordinary “person selling coffee”; ผู้จำหน่ายสินค้า is an institutional “vendor/distributor.” The difference is lexical and contextual, not a separate formal grammar.

คนที่โทรมาเมื่อเช้าฝากเบอร์ไว้ไหมคะ

khon thi tho ma muea chao fak boe wai mai kha

Did the person who called this morning leave a number? (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker)

ผู้ที่ได้รับคัดเลือกจะได้รับอีเมลยืนยันครับ

phu thi dai rap khat lueak cha dai rap imel yuenyan khrap

Those selected will receive a confirmation email. (formal-polite institutional statement, male voice)

ผู้มีสิทธิสมัครต้องมีอายุครบยี่สิบปีค่ะ

phu mi sitthi samak tong mi ayu khrop yi sip pi kha

Eligible applicants must be at least twenty years old. (formal institutional rule, female voice)

ผู้มีสิทธิ is a conventional compressed legal/administrative pattern. Learners can recognize it, but transparent ผู้ที่มีสิทธิ... may be safer in original writing when compression could create ambiguity.

💡
Use คนที่... for ordinary person reference, ผู้ที่... for an explicit formal relative, and compact ผู้ + predicate for an established role label.

ผู้ versus นัก

ผู้ often labels a participant in the current document or event. นัก more often forms an established occupation, practiced activity, or identity. Compare ผู้เขียน “the author/writer of this text” with นักเขียน “writer as profession or identity,” and ผู้เรียน “learner in an educational system” with นักเรียน “school student.”

ผู้เขียนบทความนี้เก็บข้อมูลจากสามจังหวัดค่ะ

phu khian botkhwam ni kep khomun chak sam changwat kha

The author of this article collected data from three provinces. (formal-polite academic report, female voice)

เขาเป็นนักเขียนนิยายสำหรับเด็กครับ

khao pen nak khian niyai samrap dek khrap

He is a children's novelist. (ordinary polite professional description, male speaker)

ระบบจะแสดงผลการเรียนให้ผู้เรียนแต่ละคนค่ะ

rabop cha sadaeng phon kan rian hai phu rian tae la khon kha

The system will display learning results for each learner. (formal-polite educational description, female voice)

The contrast is a tendency, not a universal formula. Lexical convention determines the established word.

Count, plurality, and reference

ผู้ nouns do not acquire plural morphology. Count people with คน: ผู้สมัครสามคน, ผู้ซื้อคนนี้, ผู้เข้าร่วมแต่ละคน. In highly respectful contexts, ท่าน can classify or refer to people, but it is not a neutral substitute everywhere.

ผู้สมัครสามคนมาถึงก่อนเวลาแล้วครับ

phu samak sam khon ma thueng kon wela laeo khrap

Three applicants have arrived early. (formal-polite report, male speaker)

ผู้ใช้แต่ละคนตั้งรหัสผ่านของตนเองได้ค่ะ

phu chai tae la khon tang rahat phan khong ton eng dai kha

Each user can set their own password. (formal-polite technical statement, female voice)

Thai has no obligatory article before ผู้สมัคร. Prior discourse, คนนี้, แต่ละคน, and numbers supply determination.

Lexicalized ผู้ words

Not every word beginning with ผู้ is productively compositional. ผู้หญิง means “woman,” ผู้ใหญ่ means “adult/elder,” and ผู้ดี has established social meanings such as a well-bred or upper-class person. An analysis like “one who females” or “one who bigs” is wrong.

ผู้ใหญ่ควรฟังความคิดเห็นของเด็กด้วยครับ

phu yai khuan fang khwam khithen khong dek duai khrap

Adults should listen to children's opinions too. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; ผู้ใหญ่ is lexicalized)

Productivity therefore coexists with memorized vocabulary. An interpretable new form can still sound bureaucratic, humorous, or simply unattested.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ในประกาศควรใช้คนที่สมัครหรือผู้สมัครคะ

nai prakat khuan chai khon thi samak rue phu samak kha

Should the notice use ‘people who apply’ or ‘applicants’? (ordinary polite question, female colleague)

ใช้ผู้สมัครครับ เป็นคำเรียกบทบาทที่กระชับและชัดเจน

chai phu samak khrap pen kham riak botbat thi krap lae chatchen

Use phu samak; it is a concise, clear term for the role. (ordinary polite reply, male colleague)

แต่ตอนคุยกับทีม ใช้คนที่สมัครก็ได้ใช่ไหมคะ

tae ton khui kap thim chai khon thi samak ko dai chai mai kha

But when talking with the team, khon thi samak is also possible, right? (ordinary polite follow-up, female colleague)

ได้ครับ ถ้าต้องการเน้นตัวบุคคลมากกว่าคำเรียกบทบาท

dai khrap tha tongkan nen tua bukkhon mak kwa kham riak botbat

Yes, if you want to emphasize the person rather than the term for the role. (ordinary polite explanation, male colleague)

Common Mistakes

Putting the number before the role noun

❌ สามผู้สมัครส่งเอกสารแล้ว

Incorrect English-like number order.

✅ ผู้สมัครสามคนส่งเอกสารแล้วครับ

phu samak sam khon song ekkasan laeo khrap

Three applicants have submitted the documents. (formal-polite report, male voice)

Attaching ผู้ to a property mechanically

❌ ผู้สวยคนนั้นเป็นเพื่อนฉัน

Incorrect automatic agent formation from the property สวย.

✅ คนสวยคนนั้นเป็นเพื่อนฉันค่ะ

khon suai khon nan pen phuean chan kha

That beautiful person is my friend. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

Reversing an affected role

❌ ผู้กล่าวหาต้องได้รับการคุ้มครองเพราะถูกกล่าวหา

Wrong participant label: ผู้กล่าวหา is the accuser, not the accused person.

✅ ผู้ถูกกล่าวหาต้องได้รับการคุ้มครองตามกฎหมาย

phu thuk klao ha tong dai rap kan khumkhrong tam kotmai

The accused person must receive legal protection. (formal legal statement)

Treating ผู้ as an English article before an organization

❌ ผู้บริษัทจะส่งสินค้าให้พรุ่งนี้

Incorrect noun structure; บริษัท is already the organizational actor.

✅ บริษัทจะส่งสินค้าให้พรุ่งนี้ค่ะ

borisat cha song sinkha hai phrung ni kha

The company will send the product tomorrow. (formal-polite statement, female voice)

Key Takeaways

  • ผู้ + predicate/role forms a human-participant noun, often in formal or institutional language.
  • The construction includes agents, recipients, experiencers, and affected people—not agents alone.
  • Use คนที่, ผู้ที่, compact ผู้ roles, and นัก occupations according to function and convention.
  • Count with คน, keep complements after the role predicate, and memorize lexicalized forms such as ผู้หญิง and ผู้ใหญ่.
