Synonym and Near-Synonym Compounds

Thai frequently joins words with identical, overlapping, or closely associated meanings into a conventional unit: ถูกต้อง “correct,” รวดเร็ว “rapid,” บ้านเรือน “homes/dwellings,” and เลือกสรร “select carefully.” Thai school grammar commonly places such formations under คำซ้อนเพื่อความหมาย. The pair may reinforce one property, broaden a domain, or develop a meaning that neither piece predicts alone.

These are not English compounds translated backward, and they are not freely reversible lists. The learner must know the established order, the grammatical category of the whole, and how transparent its meaning remains. Compare the different head–modifier logic of ordinary noun compounds.

Three outcomes of semantic pairing

Near-synonym compounds do not all have the same internal relation.

OutcomeExamplesHow the whole behaves
reinforcementถูกต้อง, ชัดเจน, เงียบสงบone strengthened or stabilized property
broader set/domainบ้านเรือน, ทรัพย์สิน, ลูกหลานcollective category broader than one member
lexicalized actionแก้ไข, เลือกสรร, ดูแลone conventional predicate, not necessarily two events
evaluative descriptionสวยงาม, ใหญ่โต, แข็งแรงestablished property with its own collocations

กรุณาตรวจสอบว่าชื่อและเลขบัญชีถูกต้องค่ะ

karuna truat sop wa chue lae lek banchi thuk tong kha

Please check that the name and account number are correct. (formal-polite instruction, female voice)

เขาอธิบายขั้นตอนได้ชัดเจนมากครับ

khao athibai khan ton dai chatchen mak khrap

He explained the steps very clearly. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

In ถูกต้อง and ชัดเจน, the whole functions as one property predicate. English may use one adjective or adverb; Thai does not require a copula before the predicate.

ข้อมูลนี้ถูกต้องครับ

khomun ni thuk tong khrap

This information is correct. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

ข้อมูลนี้ชัดเจนค่ะ

khomun ni chatchen kha

This information is clear. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

The paired words do not mark agreement or tense. Their shape stays constant across time and participants.

💡
Test the category of the whole in a sentence. If it directly describes a noun as a predicate, do not insert English “be” logic into Thai analysis.

Reinforcement is not simple repetition

รวดเร็ว, สวยงาม, ใหญ่โต, and แข็งแรง combine related meanings, but the result is an established lexical choice. Speakers may also use the first or second constituent independently where that word exists; the contexts are not automatically identical.

ฝ่ายบริการตอบกลับอย่างรวดเร็วค่ะ

fai borikan top klap yang ruat reo kha

Customer service responded promptly. (formal-neutral report, female speaker)

สวนเล็กแต่จัดได้สวยงามมากครับ

suan lek tae chat dai suai ngam mak khrap

The garden is small but arranged very beautifully. (ordinary polite assessment, male speaker)

หลังพักสองวัน เขาก็แข็งแรงขึ้นมากค่ะ

lang phak song wan khao ko khaeng raeng khuen mak kha

After two days of rest, he became much stronger. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

Simple reduplication repeats the same base and has its own degree or distributive effects: เร็วๆ can mean “quickly” or “fairly quick” by context. รวดเร็ว is a lexical near-synonym compound, not a spelling-out of เร็วๆ.

ช่วยตอบเร็วๆ หน่อยครับ

chuai top reo reo noi khrap

Please answer quickly. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; reduplication)

ระบบนี้ประมวลผลได้รวดเร็วมากค่ะ

rabop ni pramuan phon dai ruat reo mak kha

This system processes data very rapidly. (formal-polite technical assessment, female speaker; near-synonym compound)

Broadening a noun domain

Paired nouns can present a collective domain. บ้านเรือน means houses, homes, or dwellings collectively; ทรัพย์สิน covers property/assets; ลูกหลาน covers children and descendants. The whole does not carry an English plural ending. Number remains contextual or appears in a classifier construction.

พายุทำให้บ้านเรือนเสียหายหลายหลัง

phayu tham hai ban ruean sia hai lai lang

The storm damaged many homes. (news/formal report; หลัง counts dwellings)

เจ้าหน้าที่ช่วยประชาชนขนทรัพย์สินออกจากพื้นที่ค่ะ

chaonathi chuai prachachon khon sap sin ok chak phuen thi kha

Officials helped residents move their belongings out of the area. (formal-polite report, female voice)

คุณยายเก็บรูปเก่าไว้ให้ลูกหลานครับ

khun yai kep rup kao wai hai luk lan khrap

Grandmother kept the old photographs for her children and descendants. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

บ้านเรือนหลายหลัง combines a collective lexical noun with an explicit count. It does not mean that เรือน itself is a plural marker.

Lexicalized predicates and headedness

Some pairs behave as one predicate whose event cannot be split into two sequential actions. แก้ไขเอกสาร means revise/correct a document; เลือกสรรวัตถุดิบ means select ingredients with care; ดูแลผู้ป่วย means care for a patient. Historical component meanings may remain recognizable without deciding the modern syntax by themselves.

ทีมกำลังแก้ไขเอกสารฉบับสุดท้ายอยู่ครับ

thim kamlang kaekhai ekkasan chabap sutthai yu khrap

The team is revising the final document. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

ร้านนี้เลือกสรรวัตถุดิบจากเกษตรกรในพื้นที่ค่ะ

ran ni lueak san watthudip chak kasettrakon nai phuen thi kha

This shop carefully selects ingredients from local farmers. (formal-polite description, female speaker)

คืนนี้ใครจะดูแลคุณตาครับ

khuen ni khrai cha dulae khun ta khrap

Who will look after Grandfather tonight? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)

Traditional analyses may call some examples coordinate compounds and others synonymous compounds. There is genuine gray area because lexicalization occurs gradually. For learning, the decisive evidence is current distribution: fixed order, conventional meaning, and the complements the whole selects.

💡
If reversing the pieces produces no established word, the expression is lexicalized even when both pieces remain meaningful. Store the whole form in its attested order.

Pronunciation and invisible boundaries

Thai writes these compounds without an internal space: ถูกต้อง, not ถูก ต้อง. That does not mean the form has one syllable, and it does not mean every continuous Thai string is one word. RTGS separates pronunciation-sized units as thuk tong, while the Thai target keeps natural orthography.

Tone and vowel length remain lexical in each part. No special “compound tone” replaces the ordinary pronunciations, though connected speech can adjust rhythm and prominence.

Register and active use

Many pairs are completely neutral: ถูกต้อง, ดูแล, and แข็งแรง occur in daily conversation. Others favor formal or written settings: เลือกสรร often sounds more deliberate than เลือก, and ทรัพย์สิน is common in legal, news, and administrative prose (formal). Choose the whole word because its meaning fits, not simply because two syllables sound more educated.

เลือกอันที่ชอบได้เลยค่ะ

lueak an thi chop dai loei kha

Choose whichever one you like. (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker)

คณะกรรมการจะเลือกสรรผลงานที่ตรงตามเกณฑ์ครับ

khana kammakan cha lueak san phonngan thi trong tam ken khrap

The committee will select works that meet the criteria. (formal-polite institutional statement, male voice)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

ประโยคนี้ใช้คำว่าเร็วแทนรวดเร็วได้ไหมคะ

prayok ni chai kham wa reo thaen ruat reo dai mai kha

Can this sentence use reo instead of ruat reo? (ordinary polite question, female learner)

ได้ครับ ถ้าเป็นบทสนทนาทั่วไป คำว่าเร็วมักฟังเป็นธรรมชาติกว่า

dai khrap tha pen bot sonthana thuapai kham wa reo mak fang pen thammachat kwa

Yes. In ordinary conversation, reo often sounds more natural. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker)

แต่ในรายงานใช้ดำเนินการอย่างรวดเร็วได้ใช่ไหมคะ

tae nai raingan chai damnoenkan yang ruat reo dai chai mai kha

But in a report, can I use damnoenkan yang ruat reo? (ordinary polite follow-up, female learner)

ได้ครับ เพราะเข้ากับสำนวนรายงานที่เป็นทางการ

dai khrap phro khao kap samnuan raingan thi pen thang kan

Yes, because it fits formal report style. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

Treating reversed syllables as the same lexical item

❌ ถูกต้องกับต้องถูกมีความหมายเหมือนกันทุกบริบท

False: ถูกต้อง is a lexical property, whereas ต้องถูก is a modal phrase meaning ‘must be correct.’

✅ ถูกต้องหมายถึงถูกหรือแม่นยำ ส่วนต้องถูกหมายถึงจำเป็นต้องถูก

thuk tong mai thueng thuk rue maenyam suan tong thuk mai thueng champen tong thuk

Thuk tong means correct or accurate; tong thuk means that something must be correct. (metalinguistic contrast)

Treating both members as two events

❌ ทีมแก้เอกสารแล้วค่อยไขเอกสาร

Incorrect compositional split of the lexical predicate แก้ไข.

✅ ทีมแก้ไขเอกสารแล้วส่งให้ลูกค้าครับ

thim kaekhai ekkasan laeo song hai lukkha khrap

The team revised the document and sent it to the client. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Using a collective pair as a classifier

❌ พายุทำให้บ้านห้าบ้านเรือนเสียหาย

Incorrect count structure; บ้านเรือน is not a classifier.

✅ พายุทำให้บ้านเรือนห้าหลังเสียหาย

phayu tham hai ban ruean ha lang sia hai

The storm damaged five homes. (formal report; หลัง is the classifier)

Assuming a lexicalized pair preserves either member's meaning

❌ คืนนี้ฉันจะดูแลหนังเรื่องนี้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘watch’: ดูแล is the lexical predicate ‘look after,’ not two interchangeable viewing verbs.

✅ คืนนี้ฉันจะดูหนังเรื่องนี้ค่ะ

khuen ni chan cha du nang rueang ni kha

I will watch this film tonight. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Near-synonym compounds can reinforce a property, broaden a domain, or lexicalize one action.
  • Their order and collocations are conventional; the pieces are not freely reversible.
  • Collective pairs do not mark grammatical plural, and exact counts still need classifiers.
  • Thai spelling hides the internal boundary, while RTGS spacing is only a reading aid.
