Thai contains many predicates built from two recognizable elements that recur together as one conventional lexical unit. เข้าใจ means “understand,” ตัดสินใจ means “decide,” ตรวจสอบ means “inspect or verify,” and รับผิดชอบ means “be responsible for.” Their written continuity is not what makes them compounds—ordinary Thai also writes freely combined words without spaces. Their fixed order, conventional meaning, restricted internal substitution, and shared grammatical behavior provide the stronger evidence.
This page approaches these forms as word formation. The companion page on lexical compounds versus serialization develops the clause-level diagnostics. The boundary is genuinely gradual: some combinations are clearly stored words, some are freely assembled verb sequences, and frequent intermediate cases permit more than one linguistic analysis.
Store the predicate as a lexical unit
The elements inside a lexical verb compound do not normally describe independent events. เข้าใจ is not a journey that first “enters” and then separately “hearts.” ตัดสินใจ does not report three independently timed actions. The whole form selects participants and contributes one conventional predicate meaning.
| Compound | Useful internal cue | Whole lexical meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| เข้าใจ | เข้า + ใจ | understand | neutral |
| ตัดสินใจ | ตัดสิน + ใจ | decide | neutral |
| ตรวจสอบ | ตรวจ + สอบ | inspect, check, verify | neutral to formal |
| เปรียบเทียบ | เปรียบ + เทียบ | compare | neutral to academic |
| รับผิดชอบ | รับ + ผิด + ชอบ | be responsible for | neutral to formal |
| วางแผน | วาง + แผน | plan | neutral |
The “internal cue” column supports memory; it is not a recipe for calculating the modern meaning. In particular, translating each element of รับผิดชอบ separately will not yield its current grammatical frame.
ผมยังไม่เข้าใจเงื่อนไขข้อนี้ครับ
phom yang mai khao chai ngueankhai kho ni khrap
I still don't understand this condition. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; เข้าใจ selects the content understood)
ทีมกำลังเปรียบเทียบข้อเสนอสามฉบับอยู่ค่ะ
thim kamlang priap thiap khosanoe sam chabap yu kha
The team is comparing three proposals. (formal-polite workplace report, female speaker; เปรียบเทียบ functions as one predicate)
Word boundaries are not spaces
Thai normally prints a compound, its object, and nearby grammatical material in one continuous clause. In ทีมกำลังเปรียบเทียบข้อเสนออยู่, the absence of spaces does not make the entire string one word. Conversely, inserting spaces inside เปรียบเทียบ would not reveal a useful native boundary.
Pronunciation offers additional evidence. A familiar compound has a conventional syllable sequence and rhythm, but RTGS cannot show tone or vowel length. It also varies in how it visually groups compounds across publications. Learn the Thai form and native audio; do not decide wordhood from romanization typography.
เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจสอบลายเซ็นทุกหน้าก่อนรับเอกสารค่ะ
chaonathi truat sop lai sen thuk na kon rap ekkasan kha
The officer checks the signature on every page before accepting the documents. (formal-polite administrative explanation, female speaker)
บริษัทรับผิดชอบค่าซ่อมทั้งหมดครับ
borisat rap phitchop kha som thangmot khrap
The company is responsible for all repair costs. (formal-polite explanation, male speaker)
The object or complement follows the whole predicate: ตรวจสอบ + ลายเซ็น, รับผิดชอบ + ค่าซ่อม. It cannot be inserted wherever English happens to place a pronoun or preposition.
There is no universal internal head rule
Many noun compounds have a useful head-first generalization, but lexical verb compounds are more diverse. In transparent pairs such as ตรวจสอบ, both elements contribute to the activity. In วางแผน, the verbal element helps establish predication and the following noun contributes lexical content. In เข้าใจ, the modern meaning is integrated enough that asking which piece is the sole head does little for a learner.
The honest rule is lexical: identify recurring structural families, but do not force every compound into one head direction. Thai scholarship also differs over where to draw the line among compound, complex word, collocation, and serial predicate. Fixedness and conventional meaning matter more than the English label.
ฝ่ายงานวางแผนเส้นทางใหม่ไว้แล้วค่ะ
fai ngan wang phaen sen thang mai wai laeo kha
The team has already planned a new route. (formal-polite update, female speaker)
ผู้จัดการตัดสินใจเลื่อนงานไปสัปดาห์หน้าครับ
phuchatkan tatsinchai luean ngan pai sapda na khrap
The manager decided to postpone the event until next week. (ordinary-polite workplace report, male speaker)
English uses decide to postpone, with an infinitive marker between predicates. Thai uses ตัดสินใจ + เลื่อน with no equivalent of to. Here ตัดสินใจ is the lexical compound; เลื่อนงาน supplies the content of the decision. Adjacent Thai predicates do not automatically stand in an English infinitive relation.
Productive material goes around the compound
The internal pieces are restricted, but the compound occupies productive clause slots. Negation, aspect, time expressions, subjects, and objects combine around it without changing its form.
| Productive frame | Example | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| ยังไม่ + compound + content | ยังไม่ตัดสินใจเรื่องวันเดินทาง | decision has not occurred yet |
| กำลัง + compound + object + อยู่ | กำลังตรวจสอบบัญชีอยู่ | verification is ongoing |
| compound + object + แล้ว | แก้ไขข้อมูลแล้ว | correction is completed or currently relevant |
| จะ + compound + object | จะเปรียบเทียบราคาก่อน | comparison is prospective |
| subject + compound + complement | บริษัทรับผิดชอบค่าใช้จ่าย | company bears responsibility |
เรายังไม่ตัดสินใจเรื่องวันเดินทางค่ะ
rao yang mai tatsinchai rueang wan doen thang kha
We haven't decided on the travel date yet. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker)
ฝ่ายบัญชีกำลังตรวจสอบยอดโอนอยู่ครับ
fai banchi kamlang truat sop yot on yu khrap
Accounting is checking the transfer amount. (formal-polite workplace update, male speaker)
ช่างแก้ไขระบบเรียบร้อยแล้วค่ะ
chang kaekhai rabop riaproi laeo kha
The technician has finished fixing the system. (ordinary-polite update, female speaker)
No verb receives a past, progressive, or agreement ending. Time and viewpoint come from ยังไม่, กำลัง...อยู่, แล้ว, a time expression, and discourse. This is analytic grammar with precise scope, not absence of tense-related meaning.
Minimal contrast: lexical เข้าใจ versus directional เข้าไป
The shared syllable เข้า does not give the two constructions the same structure.
เด็กฝึกงานเข้าใจคำสั่งแล้วครับ
dek fuek ngan khao chai kham sang laeo khrap
The trainee understands the instructions now. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; lexical compound เข้าใจ)
เด็กฝึกงานเดินเข้าไปในห้องเก็บของแล้วครับ
dek fuek ngan doen khao pai nai hong kep khong laeo khrap
The trainee has walked into the storage room. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; productive motion sequence เข้าไป)
In the first, ใจ cannot be replaced by a destination phrase; เข้าใจ selects คำสั่ง as understood content. In the second, เข้าไป describes inward motion, and ในห้องเก็บของ identifies the path's destination. Negation and aspect can target stages of a productive motion chain in ways unavailable inside the lexical compound.
This contrast also shows why English lexical categories do not map one to one. English has a single verb understand and a particle-bearing motion phrase go in; Thai builds the first from historically meaningful pieces and the second as a live directional sequence.
Productivity is stronger outside than inside
Speakers can freely replace the object after ตรวจสอบ—documents, accounts, signatures, data—because the object slot is grammatical. They cannot freely replace สอบ with an arbitrary verb and expect a new synonym of “inspect.” Some internal patterns, especially paired near-synonyms, recur across the vocabulary, but acceptance remains conventional.
ก่อนจ่ายเงิน ช่วยตรวจสอบเลขบัญชีอีกครั้งนะคะ
kon chai ngoen chuai truat sop lek banchi ik khrang na kha
Before paying, please check the account number once more. (ordinary-polite request, female speaker)
ผมจะเปรียบเทียบราคาและเงื่อนไขก่อนครับ
phom cha priap thiap rakha lae ngueankhai kon khrap
I'll compare the prices and conditions first. (ordinary-polite planning statement, male speaker)
Formal and academic contexts favor some compounds because they package precise institutional actions: ตรวจสอบ, พิจารณา, and เปรียบเทียบ are frequent in reports. Yet เข้าใจ, ตั้งใจ, and วางแผน are completely ordinary in conversation. Compounding itself has no single register label.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Coworkers discuss a proposal under review.
ตรวจสอบงบประมาณเสร็จหรือยังคะ
truat sop ngoppraman set rue yang kha
Have you finished checking the budget? (ordinary-polite workplace question, female speaker)
เสร็จแล้วครับ แต่ยังเปรียบเทียบราคาผู้ขายไม่ครบ
set laeo khrap tae yang priap thiap rakha phu khai mai khrop
Yes, but I haven't finished comparing all the vendors' prices. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้าอย่างนั้นยังไม่ต้องตัดสินใจวันนี้ก็ได้ค่ะ
tha yang nan yang mai tong tatsinchai wan ni ko dai kha
In that case, we don't have to decide today. (ordinary-polite suggestion, female speaker)
ได้ครับ พรุ่งนี้ผมจะสรุปข้อมูลให้ครบก่อน
dai khrap phrung ni phom cha sarup khomun hai khrop kon
All right. Tomorrow I'll complete the information summary first. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Splitting a lexical compound with direction
❌ ผมเข้าไปใจเหตุผลแล้วครับ
Incorrect—ไป cannot be inserted inside lexical เข้าใจ.
✅ ผมเข้าใจเหตุผลของคุณแล้วครับ
phom khao chai hetphon khong khun laeo khrap
I understand your reason now. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker)
2. Placing the object between compound elements
❌ เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจหนังสือเดินทางสอบแล้วค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘checked the passport’—the object follows the whole compound ตรวจสอบ.
✅ เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจสอบหนังสือเดินทางแล้วค่ะ
chaonathi truat sop nangsue doen thang laeo kha
The officer has checked the passport. (formal-polite report, female speaker)
3. Copying an English infinitive marker with เป็น
❌ ผู้จัดการตัดสินใจเป็นเลื่อนโครงการครับ
Incorrect—เป็น is not an infinitive marker before the content predicate.
✅ ผู้จัดการตัดสินใจเลื่อนโครงการครับ
phuchatkan tatsinchai luean khrongkan khrap
The manager decided to postpone the project. (ordinary-polite workplace report, male speaker)
4. Copying English auxiliary order around negation
❌ ฉันไม่ยังเข้าใจขั้นตอนค่ะ
Incorrect order—‘still not’ is ยังไม่ before the whole predicate.
✅ ฉันยังไม่เข้าใจขั้นตอนสุดท้ายค่ะ
chan yang mai khao chai khanton sutthai kha
I still don't understand the final step. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Lexical verb compounds have fixed internal order, conventional meaning, and one integrated argument frame.
- Written spacing does not diagnose compound status; meaning, substitution, insertion, pronunciation, and scope provide converging evidence.
- There is no universal internal head rule for every Thai verb compound, and borderline analyses are real.
- Negation, aspect, time, subjects, and objects occupy productive slots around the whole compound.
- Store each compound with its complement pattern and register instead of translating its visible pieces one by one.
