มี as Have and Exist

Thai มี covers several meanings that English divides among have, there is/are, contain, and be available. The meanings are connected: มี places an entity inside a person’s, thing’s, place’s, or situation’s domain. What comes before มี tells the listener what kind of domain it is.

มี is an invariant possessive or existential predicate, not a conjugated form of a general copula. It never changes for person, number, or time. It also does not replace เป็น for class, คือ for identity, อยู่ for the location of a known entity, or a bare property predicate.

A possessor or domain comes before มี

The basic possessive order is possessor/domain + มี + entity. Possession is broader than legal ownership: people have relatives, time, appointments, symptoms, and ideas; rooms have features; organizations have resources.

ผมมีนัดกับลูกค้าตอนบ่ายครับ

phom mi nat kap luk kha ton bai khrap

I have an appointment with a customer this afternoon. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; appointment in the speaker's schedule)

คุณอรมีลูกสาวหนึ่งคนค่ะ

khun on mi luk sao nueng khon kha

Khun On has one daughter. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; family association and human classifier คน)

ห้องพักนี้มีระเบียงเล็ก ๆ ครับ

hong phak ni mi rabiang lek lek khrap

This room has a small balcony. (ordinary polite description, male speaker; room as containing domain)

None of these noun phrases needs an article corresponding to English a. When a quantity is stated, Thai keeps its normal noun + number + classifier order: ลูกสาวหนึ่งคน, not an English-style number before the noun.

ทีมเรามีเครื่องพิมพ์สองเครื่องค่ะ

thim rao mi khrueang phim song khrueang kha

Our team has two printers. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker; machine classifier เครื่อง)

💡
Read the phrase before มี as the domain: a person can be the possessor, a room the whole containing a part, and a shop the service domain in which an item is available.

A place before มี introduces what exists there

With a location first, มี introduces an entity at that location. The entity after มี is commonly new or not yet individually identified.

ข้างทางเข้ามีตู้รับพัสดุค่ะ

khang thang khao mi tu rap phatsadu kha

There is a parcel locker beside the entrance. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; location-first introduction)

บนโต๊ะประชุมมีเอกสารอยู่สามชุดครับ

bon to prachum mi ekkasan yu sam chut khrap

There are three sets of documents on the meeting table. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; new documents introduced at a location)

แถวสถานีมีร้านอาหารเปิดดึกหลายร้านค่ะ

thaeo sathani mi ran ahan poet duek lai ran kha

There are several restaurants near the station that stay open late. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; local availability)

English inserts dummy there before is/are. Thai does not. The place itself can establish the scene, and มี introduces what the scene contains. Later อยู่ in มีเอกสารอยู่สามชุด helps present the documents as situated or remaining there; มี still does the existential introduction.

Compare a known entity:

เอกสารที่คุณส่งมาอยู่บนโต๊ะผมครับ

ekkasan thi khun song ma yu bon to phom khrap

The documents you sent are on my desk. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; identifiable documents located with อยู่)

The contrast is not simply “there is” versus “is.” It is place → newly presented entity versus identifiable entity → its location. See existential and locative order.

Availability and abstract possession

In shops, hotels, offices, and services, มี often means “have available.” The domain may be overt or obvious from the setting.

วันนี้ร้านมีขนมปังธัญพืชไหมคะ

wan ni ran mi khanom pang thanyaphuet mai kha

Does the shop have whole-grain bread today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; stock availability)

มีค่ะ แต่เหลือแค่สองก้อน

mi kha tae luea khae song kon

Yes, but only two loaves are left. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker; product omitted as recoverable)

ตอนนี้ฝ่ายบัญชีมีปัญหากับระบบชำระเงินครับ

ton ni fai banchi mi panha kap rabop chamra ngoen khrap

Accounting is having a problem with the payment system right now. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; abstract condition)

พรุ่งนี้ฉันมีเวลาคุยหลังประชุมค่ะ

phrung ni chan mi wela khui lang prachum kha

Tomorrow I have time to talk after the meeting. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; available time)

The omitted entity in มีค่ะ is licensed by the question. Without shared context, bare มี leaves the listener asking “there is what?” Thai permits omission because information is recoverable, not because มี lacks an argument.

Time and viewpoint surround an invariant predicate

Time expressions and aspectual markers alter the frame, while มี remains unchanged.

MeaningProductive frameModel

future availabilitytime + จะ + มี + entityพรุ่งนี้จะมีที่ว่าง
continued availabilityยัง + มี + entity + อยู่ยังมีอาหารอยู่
absence/nonpossessionไม่ + มี + entityไม่มีเงินสด

เมื่อก่อนอาคารนี้มีร้านหนังสือครับ

muea kon akhan ni mi ran nangsue khrap

There used to be a bookshop in this building. (ordinary polite historical report, male speaker; past supplied by เมื่อก่อน)

เดือนหน้าศูนย์ประชุมจะมีทางเข้าใหม่ค่ะ

duean na sun prachum cha mi thang khao mai kha

Next month the convention center will have a new entrance. (formal-neutral preview, female speaker; prospect with จะ)

ในครัวยังมีน้ำดื่มเหลืออยู่ครับ

nai khrua yang mi nam duem luea yu khrap

There is still drinking water left in the kitchen. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; continued availability)

กำลังมี is possible when a situation is developing—กำลังมีปัญหา “is currently experiencing a problem”—but is not automatically used for stable ownership. Thai does not add ได้ merely because English chooses had.

💡
Never choose a Thai predicate by translating English be or have in isolation. Ask whether the sentence classifies, identifies, locates a known entity, introduces existence, or places something in a possessor's domain.

Negation and neighboring constructions

Ordinary ไม่มี denies both possession and existence. ไม่อยู่ instead says that a known entity is not at a place, and ไม่ใช่ denies identity or classification.

ผมไม่มีเงินสดติดตัวครับ

phom mai mi ngoen sot tit tua khrap

I don't have any cash on me. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; nonpossession)

ในอาคารนี้ไม่มีตู้กดเงินค่ะ

nai akhan ni mai mi tu kot ngoen kha

There is no cash machine in this building. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; local absence)

ตู้กดเงินไม่อยู่ตรงทางออกครับ ย้ายไปชั้นสองแล้ว

tu kot ngoen mai yu trong thang ok khrap yai pai chan song laeo

The cash machine isn't by the exit; it has been moved to the second floor. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker; known machine, location denied)

The ไม่มี guide develops absence, nonpossession, and negative indefinites.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

At a hotel desk:

ห้องสำหรับครอบครัวมีระเบียงไหมคะ

hong samrap khropkhrua mi rabiang mai kha

Does the family room have a balcony? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; room feature)

มีครับ และมีเตียงเดี่ยวสองหลัง

mi khrap lae mi tiang diao song lang

Yes, and it has two single beds. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; recoverable room domain)

คืนนี้ยังมีห้องว่างอยู่ไหมคะ

khuen ni yang mi hong wang yu mai kha

Are there still any rooms available tonight? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; availability)

มีครับ เหลืออยู่หนึ่งห้อง แต่อยู่ชั้นห้า

mi khrap luea yu nueng hong tae yu chan ha

Yes. There is one room left, but it is on the fifth floor. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; new room introduced, then located)

Common Mistakes

1. Using เป็น for possession

❌ ฉันเป็นจักรยานหนึ่งคันค่ะ

Incorrect—this classifies the speaker as a bicycle rather than saying she has one.

✅ ฉันมีจักรยานพับหนึ่งคันค่ะ

chan mi chakkayan phap nueng khan kha

I have one folding bicycle. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

2. Using มี to locate a known entity

❌ กุญแจของผมมีในลิ้นชักครับ

Incorrect for locating my identifiable key; use อยู่.

✅ กุญแจสำรองของผมอยู่ในลิ้นชักล่างครับ

kunchae samrong khong phom yu nai linchak lang khrap

My spare key is in the bottom drawer. (ordinary polite information, male speaker)

3. Copying English number order

❌ ทีมเรามีสองเครื่องพิมพ์ค่ะ

Incorrect neutral counting order—Thai places the noun before its number and classifier.

✅ ทีมเรามีเครื่องพิมพ์สีสองเครื่องค่ะ

thim rao mi khrueang phim si song khrueang kha

Our team has two color printers. (ordinary polite workplace report, female speaker)

4. Adding a past auxiliary mechanically

❌ เมื่อวานผมได้มีประชุมครับ

Unnatural for the intended neutral past report; ได้ is not an obligatory past-tense auxiliary.

✅ เมื่อวานผมมีประชุมกับฝ่ายกฎหมายครับ

muea wan phom mi prachum kap fai kotmai khrap

Yesterday I had a meeting with legal. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

5. Confusing absence with negative location

❌ รถของบริษัทไม่มีที่ลานจอดค่ะ

Incorrect for saying where an identifiable company car is not; ไม่มี denies existence or possession.

✅ รถของบริษัทไม่อยู่ที่ลานจอดด้านหลังค่ะ

rot khong borisat mai yu thi lan chot dan lang kha

The company car isn't in the rear car park. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • possessor/domain + มี + entity expresses possession, association, containment, or availability.
  • location + มี + entity introduces existence; entity + อยู่ + location locates something identifiable.
  • มี is invariant; time and viewpoint come from context and surrounding markers.
  • ไม่มี denies possession or existence, while ไม่อยู่ and ไม่ใช่ deny different relations.
