Thai focus expressions identify which alternatives a speaker includes or excludes. แค่ “only/merely” normally stands immediately before its focus, เท่านั้น “only; no more than that” follows the material it limits, and ก็ can add a focused participant, link a condition to its consequence, or help present an option as acceptable. When negation enters the clause, order determines which contribution falls inside the negative scope.
This is not English not only with Thai words substituted one by one. Compare ไม่ได้แค่เปลี่ยนเวลา “did not merely change the time” with แค่ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนเวลา “merely did not change the time.” The same words select different alternatives because แค่ attaches to different material.
แค่ immediately precedes its focus
With an object, แค่ + noun phrase excludes other objects. With a predicate phrase, แค่ + predicate presents that action or state as the limited alternative. When ไม่ได้ precedes แค่, the exclusive limit is denied: “not merely X,” normally implying something more than X.
ร้านนี้ไม่ได้ขายแค่กาแฟค่ะ มีอาหารเช้าด้วย
ran ni mai dai khai khae kafae kha mi ahan chao duai
This place doesn't sell only coffee; it serves breakfast too. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)
ผมไม่ได้แค่ตรวจยอดรวมครับ ตรวจทุกรายการด้วย
phom mai dai khae truat yot ruam khrap truat thuk raikan duai
I didn't merely check the total; I checked every item too. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
In both examples, ไม่ได้ [แค่ X] rejects the claim that X exhausts the relevant alternatives. An added clause with ด้วย, แต่ยัง…ด้วย, or an explicit second item makes the wider set clear.
Now place แค่ before the negative expression:
ฉันแค่ไม่ได้ตอบทันทีค่ะ ไม่ได้โกรธใคร
chan khae mai dai top thanthi kha mai dai krot khrai
I simply didn't reply immediately; I wasn't angry with anyone. (ordinary polite clarification, female speaker)
เราแค่ไม่เปิดหน้าร้านวันจันทร์ครับ แต่ยังรับคำสั่งซื้อออนไลน์
rao khae mai poet na ran wan chan khrap tae yang rap kham sang sue onlai
We simply don't open the storefront on Mondays, but we still accept online orders. (ordinary polite business explanation, male speaker)
Here แค่ [negative proposition] limits the situation to that non-event. It does not imply that some larger positive action also happened. The contrast is structural:
| Scope | Productive shape | Model | Default reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| negation over exclusive | ไม่ได้ + แค่ + X | ไม่ได้แค่โทร | did not merely call; did something more |
| exclusive over negation | แค่ + ไม่ได้ + X | แค่ไม่ได้โทร | simply did not call; that is the limited issue |
| object focus | V + แค่ + object | ซื้อแค่กาแฟ | bought only coffee |
| predicate focus | แค่ + predicate phrase | แค่โทรมาถาม | only called to ask |
| formal exclusive | เพียง + X + เท่านั้น | ใช้ภายในเท่านั้น | for internal use only |
เท่านั้น closes off alternatives
เท่านั้น follows the constituent or clause whose alternatives are excluded. It is common in neutral instructions and formal restrictions; แค่นั้น is a more conversational “only that/that's all.” With negation, a clear ไม่ใช่…เท่านั้น or ไม่ได้…เท่านั้น frame denies that the named item is the whole story.
ห้องนี้ใช้สำหรับประชุมเท่านั้นครับ
hong ni chai samrap prachum thaonan khrap
This room is for meetings only. (formal-neutral restriction, male voice)
ส่วนลดนี้ใช้ได้ถึงวันศุกร์เท่านั้นค่ะ
suan lot ni chai dai thueng wan suk thaonan kha
This discount is valid only through Friday. (formal-neutral customer information, female speaker)
ปัญหาไม่ได้อยู่ที่ราคาเท่านั้นครับ แต่รวมถึงเวลาส่งของด้วย
panha mai dai yu thi rakha thaonan khrap tae ruam thueng wela song khong duai
The problem isn't only the price; it also includes the delivery time. (formal-neutral explanation, male speaker)
The final example is not simply a negative location clause. ไม่ได้อยู่ที่ X เท่านั้น denies X as the sole locus of the problem and adds another factor. In careful prose, ไม่เพียงแต่ X เท่านั้น แต่ยัง Y ด้วย is a fuller (formal) correlative frame. Everyday speech often prefers ไม่ได้แค่ X แต่ Y ด้วย.
รายงานนี้ไม่เพียงแต่สรุปผลเท่านั้น แต่ยังเสนอแนวทางแก้ไขด้วยค่ะ
raingan ni mai phiang tae sarup phon thaonan tae yang sanoe naeo thang kaekhai duai kha
This report not only summarizes the results but also proposes solutions. (formal written-style sentence, female voice)
Do not insert เท่านั้น automatically whenever English has only. Its natural position and register depend on the focused unit. In conversation, แค่ is usually lighter; in notices and restricted-use statements, clause-final เท่านั้น is especially common.
ก็ under negation
ก็ is not equivalent to one English word. Immediately after a focused subject, it can add that subject to an already active set: คุณนิดก็ไม่มา “Khun Nit isn't coming either.” In ไม่ V ก็ได้, it helps present the negative option as acceptable: “not V is also possible/okay.” These are separate constructions.
ฝ่ายบัญชีก็ยังไม่ตอบครับ ฝ่ายกฎหมายก็ไม่ตอบเหมือนกัน
fai banchi ko yang mai top khrap fai kotmai ko mai top muean kan
The accounting department still hasn't replied, and the legal department hasn't replied either. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)
ถ้าไม่สะดวก วันนี้ไม่มาก็ได้ค่ะ
tha mai saduak wan ni mai ma ko dai kha
If it isn't convenient, it's okay not to come today. (ordinary polite reassurance, female speaker)
ยังไม่ต้องตัดสินใจก็ได้ครับ กลับไปคิดก่อนได้
yang mai tong tatsinchai ko dai khrap klap pai khit kon ko dai
You don't have to decide yet; you can go back and think first. (ordinary polite reassurance, male speaker)
In the first example, each ก็ follows a focused participant and the negative predicate applies to that participant. In the latter examples, ก็ได้ evaluates an entire option as acceptable. It does not mark past tense, and it does not turn ไม่มา into an affirmative.
Focus, time, and modal scope
Time expressions locate the proposition independently. เมื่อวานไม่ได้แค่โทร reports a past event because เมื่อวาน anchors it; พรุ่งนี้แค่ไม่เปิดร้าน describes a prospective non-opening because พรุ่งนี้ supplies the time. The forms of โทร and เปิด remain unchanged.
Modal placement can add another scope layer. Compare ไม่ต้องซื้อแค่ชุดใหญ่ “you do not have to buy only the large set” with ต้องไม่ซื้อแค่ชุดใหญ่ “you must not buy only the large set.” The first removes a requirement; the second imposes a restriction on the limited purchase. If either meaning matters operationally, name the permitted or required alternative explicitly rather than trusting context alone. The broader modal distinction is developed on negation inside predicate chains.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers clarify what a client requested.
ลูกค้าขอแค่เปลี่ยนวันส่งของใช่ไหมคะ
luk kha kho khae plian wan song khong chai mai kha
The customer asked only to change the delivery date, right? (polite confirmation question, female speaker)
ไม่ได้ขอแค่เปลี่ยนวันครับ เขาขอเปลี่ยนที่อยู่ด้วย
mai dai kho khae plian wan khrap khao kho plian thi yu duai
They didn't ask merely to change the date; they asked to change the address too. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
ถ้ายังยืนยันที่อยู่ไม่ได้ เลื่อนส่งไปก่อนก็ได้ไหมคะ
tha yang yuenyan thi yu mai dai luean song pai kon ko dai mai kha
If the address still can't be confirmed, would it be okay to postpone shipping for now? (polite proposal, female speaker)
ได้ครับ แต่เลื่อนได้ถึงวันพฤหัสบดีเท่านั้น
dai khrap tae luean dai thueng wan pharuehatsabodi thaonan
Yes, but it can be postponed only until Thursday. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Notice that a bare ไม่ครับ after the first question would be underspecified: it might reject the whole proposition or only the claim that the date was the sole change. The repeated ไม่ได้ขอแค่… exposes the intended scope.
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing “not only” and “only not”
❌ ฉันแค่ไม่ได้แก้ชื่อค่ะ แก้ที่อยู่ด้วย
Incorrect for ‘I didn't only correct the name’; แค่ scopes over the negative and instead limits the issue to not correcting the name.
✅ ฉันไม่ได้แก้แค่ชื่อค่ะ แก้ที่อยู่ด้วย
chan mai dai kae khae chue kha kae thi yu duai
I didn't correct only the name; I corrected the address too. (ordinary polite clarification, female speaker)
2. Separating แค่ from its intended object
❌ ผมซื้อกาแฟแค่กับน้ำครับ
Incorrect focus placement for ‘only coffee and water’; แค่ must precede the coordinated object phrase.
✅ ผมซื้อแค่กาแฟกับน้ำครับ ไม่ได้ซื้อขนม
phom sue khae kafae kap nam khrap mai dai sue khanom
I bought only coffee and water; I didn't buy any snacks. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
3. Treating ก็ as a universal translation of “only”
❌ ร้านเปิดก็วันธรรมดาค่ะ
Incorrect for the intended restriction ‘open only on weekdays’; subject-associated ก็ does not create that exclusive meaning.
✅ ร้านเปิดเฉพาะวันธรรมดาเท่านั้นค่ะ
ran poet chapho wan thammada thaonan kha
The shop opens only on weekdays. (formal-neutral schedule information, female speaker)
4. Negating the action when only the focus claim is wrong
❌ เปลี่ยนแค่เวลาใช่ไหมคะ — ไม่เปลี่ยนครับ เปลี่ยนทั้งเวลาและห้อง
Contradictory for the intended correction: ไม่เปลี่ยน denies that any change occurred, but the next clause asserts two changes.
✅ เปลี่ยนแค่เวลาใช่ไหมคะ — ไม่ใช่ครับ เปลี่ยนทั้งเวลาและห้อง
plian khae wela chai mai kha mai chai khrap plian thang wela lae hong
Only the time changed, right? — No. Both the time and the room changed. (ordinary polite clarification)
Key Takeaways
- แค่ normally stands immediately before its focus; เท่านั้น follows the material it limits.
- ไม่ได้แค่ X rejects X as the sole alternative, while แค่ไม่ได้ X limits the problem to non-X.
- Subject-adjacent ก็ can mean “also/either”; ไม่ V ก็ได้ presents non-V as an acceptable option.
- Focus particles do not mark tense. Time and aspect remain separate layers.
- When a short negative could reject more than one constituent, repeat the relevant predicate or alternative.
