The basic Thai negative ไม่ goes directly before the predicate it denies: ไม่ไป “not go,” ไม่ชอบ “not like,” ไม่ร้อน “not be hot.” Thai does not add a form of English do or be, and the predicate does not change for person or tense.
That simple position carries much of the grammar. When other words occur in the predicate phrase, moving ไม่ can change its scope. Thai also has conventional negative expressions for identity (ไม่ใช่), existence or possession (ไม่มี), and location/presence (ไม่อยู่); those are not reasons to move basic ไม่ after the predicate.
Put ไม่ before an action or state
| Predicate type | Positive | Negative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| action | ไป | ไม่ไป | not go |
| preference | ชอบกาแฟ | ไม่ชอบกาแฟ | not like coffee |
| property | แพง | ไม่แพง | not expensive |
| bodily state | หิว | ไม่หิว | not hungry |
| prospective event | จะไป | จะไม่ไป | will not go / intends not to go |
| desire | อยากรอ | ไม่อยากรอ | not want to wait |
วันนี้ผมไม่ไปสำนักงานครับ
wan ni phom mai pai samnakngan khrap
I'm not going to the office today. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
ฉันไม่ชอบกาแฟหวานค่ะ
chan mai chop kafae wan kha
I don't like sweet coffee. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
ร้านนี้ไม่แพงค่ะ แต่อาหารอร่อยมาก
ran ni mai phaeng kha tae ahan aroi mak
This restaurant isn't expensive, but the food is very good. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker)
English needs do not with go and like, but is not with expensive. Thai uses the same preverbal ไม่ because actions, preferences, and properties can all function as predicates.
Time comes from context, not from ไม่
The form stays unchanged with past, present, habitual, or future reference. A time expression and the surrounding discourse locate the event.
เมื่อวานเขาไม่มาประชุมค่ะ
muea wan khao mai ma prachum kha
He did not come to the meeting yesterday. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; past reference from เมื่อวาน)
ปกติรถคันนี้ไม่วิ่งวันอาทิตย์ครับ
pakati rot khan ni mai wing wan athit khrap
This vehicle normally does not run on Sundays. (ordinary polite schedule information, male speaker; habitual reference)
พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะไม่เปิดร้านค่ะ
phrung ni phuak rao cha mai poet ran kha
Tomorrow we will not open the shop. (ordinary polite announcement, female speaker; prospective จะ outside negation)
จะไม่เปิด presents a prospective non-opening. ไม่ has not become a future negative, and เปิด has not conjugated. In a clear timetable context, พรุ่งนี้ไม่เปิดร้าน is also possible because the time phrase supplies the future setting.
Predicate type chooses the fuller negative frame
Basic ไม่ still precedes the negative expression, but some meanings conventionally combine it with another predicate:
| Meaning denied | Normal negative | Model |
|---|---|---|
| action or property | ไม่ + predicate | ไม่มา / ไม่ร้อน |
| identity or classification | ไม่ใช่ | ไม่ใช่พนักงาน |
| existence or possession | ไม่มี | ไม่มีเงินสด |
| location or presence | ไม่อยู่ | ผู้จัดการไม่อยู่ |
| event realization | ไม่ได้ + event | ไม่ได้โทร |
คุณนิดไม่ใช่ผู้จัดการสาขานี้ค่ะ
khun nit mai chai phu chatkan sakha ni kha
Khun Nit is not the manager of this branch. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker; negative identity)
ผมไม่มีเงินสดพอครับ ขอจ่ายด้วยบัตรได้ไหมครับ
phom mai mi ngoen sot pho khrap kho chai duai bat dai mai khrap
I don't have enough cash. May I pay by card? (ordinary polite request, male speaker; negative possession)
ตอนนี้หัวหน้าไม่อยู่ครับ กลับมาบ่ายสอง
ton ni hua na mai yu khrap klap ma bai song
The supervisor isn't here now; they will be back at two. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; negative presence)
These are lexical–constructional choices. Do not use ไม่เป็น for ordinary negative identity or ไม่ใช่ for every negative action. The negative identity page develops the first contrast.
Scope with modals and aspect
Place ไม่ before the element whose contribution is denied. ไม่อยากไป means the desire is absent: “do not want to go.” จะไม่ไป places the non-going inside a prospective plan. ไม่ได้ไป commonly denies event realization, whereas postverbal ไปไม่ได้ says going is impossible or not permitted.
ฉันไม่อยากรอนานค่ะ
chan mai yak ro nan kha
I don't want to wait long. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; desire negated)
เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้ขับรถมาครับ
muea chao phom mai dai khap rot ma khrap
I did not drive here this morning. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker; event realization denied)
ถนนปิดอยู่ ตอนนี้ขับรถเข้าไปไม่ได้ค่ะ
thanon pit yu ton ni khap rot khao pai mai dai kha
The road is closed; you cannot drive in right now. (ordinary polite warning, female speaker; possibility denied after the motion chain)
The last two forms are not interchangeable positions for one English not. Their scope differs. See ไม่ได้ and event denial for the fuller contrast.
Short negative replies
Thai often repeats the predicate from the question rather than answering every yes–no question with one universal “no.” To ไปไหมคะ “Are you going?”, a clear reply is ไม่ไปครับ. To an identity confirmation, ไม่ใช่ค่ะ is natural. Bare ไม่ครับ/ไม่ค่ะ occurs as a refusal or correction, but it can sound abrupt or leave the exact scope dependent on context.
วันเสาร์นี้ไปเดินตลาดด้วยกันไหมคะ
wan sao ni pai doen talat duai kan mai kha
Would you like to walk around the market together this Saturday? (polite invitation, female speaker)
เสาร์นี้ไม่ไปครับ ต้องเตรียมงานประชุม
sao ni mai pai khrap tong triam ngan prachum
I'm not going this Saturday; I have to prepare for a meeting. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; predicate repeated with subject omitted)
The omitted ผม is recoverable from the speaker role. Polite ครับ softens the reply, but it does not change where ไม่ scopes.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A customer checks whether a café item is available.
วันนี้มีเค้กมะพร้าวไหมคะ
wan ni mi khek maphao mai kha
Do you have coconut cake today? (polite question, female speaker)
วันนี้ไม่มีครับ มีเค้กส้มแทน
wan ni mai mi khrap mi khek som thaen
Not today. We have orange cake instead. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; existential negative)
เค้กส้มหวานมากไหมคะ
khek som wan mak mai kha
Is the orange cake very sweet? (polite question, female speaker)
ไม่หวานมากครับ กินกับกาแฟกำลังดี
mai wan mak khrap kin kap kafae kamlang di
It isn't very sweet; it goes well with coffee. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; property predicate negated and cake omitted)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding an English do auxiliary
❌ ฉันทำไม่ชอบกาแฟค่ะ
Incorrect—ทำ does not function as English auxiliary ‘do’ in Thai negation.
✅ ฉันไม่ชอบกาแฟใส่น้ำตาลค่ะ
chan mai chop kafae sai namtan kha
I don't like coffee with sugar. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)
2. Putting basic ไม่ after the predicate
❌ สัปดาห์หน้าผมไปไม่เชียงใหม่ครับ
Incorrect simple-negation order; ไม่ precedes ไป.
✅ สัปดาห์หน้าผมไม่ไปเชียงใหม่ครับ
sapda na phom mai pai chiang mai khrap
I'm not going to Chiang Mai next week. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)
3. Using bare ไม่ before a noun identity
❌ คุณอรไม่เจ้าของร้านค่ะ
Incorrect—ordinary negative identity requires ไม่ใช่ before the noun phrase.
✅ คุณอรไม่ใช่เจ้าของร้านค่ะ
khun on mai chai chao khong ran kha
Khun On is not the shop owner. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)
4. Using ไม่ใช่ for an ordinary action
❌ เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ใช่โทรหาลูกค้าครับ
Incorrect predicate type; โทร is an action and takes basic ไม่ or event-denial ไม่ได้.
✅ เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้โทรหาลูกค้ารายนี้ครับ
muea chao phom mai dai tho ha luk kha rai ni khrap
I did not call this customer this morning. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
5. Answering an action question with ไม่ใช่
❌ ไปประชุมไหมคะ — ไม่ใช่ครับ
Incorrect reply predicate; ไม่ใช่ denies identity, not the action ไป.
✅ ไปประชุมไหมคะ — ไม่ไปครับ
pai prachum mai kha mai pai khrap
Are you going to the meeting? — No, I'm not. (ordinary polite exchange; action repeated in the reply)
Key Takeaways
- Put ไม่ directly before an action, state, preference, or property predicate.
- Time expressions and aspectual words locate the event; neither ไม่ nor the predicate conjugates.
- Use established ไม่ใช่, ไม่มี, and ไม่อยู่ for identity, existence/possession, and presence.
- Negation position distinguishes ไม่ได้ไป from ไปไม่ได้ and ไม่อยากไป from other scopes.
- In short replies, repeat the relevant negative predicate when clarity matters.
