Calibrating certainty in Thai is not a matter of replacing English might, probably, and must with three words on a fixed numerical scale. A speaker also signals why a claim is credible: it may be one open possibility, an expectation based on routine, a conclusion from visible evidence, or a formal interpretation of data. The form chosen therefore packages commitment, evidence source, scope, and register together.
This page brings those choices into one system. It focuses on standard Central Thai and leaves sentence-final affect to dedicated pages. The individual forms receive fuller treatment in คง, อาจ, and น่าจะ.
Do not turn the system into percentages
The most useful first contrast is between an unqualified assertion and a proposition placed inside an epistemic frame:
รถไฟมาถึงชานชาลาแล้วครับ
rotfai ma thueng chan chala laeo khrap
The train has reached the platform. (ordinary polite assertion, male speaker; presented as established)
รถไฟน่าจะมาถึงชานชาลาแล้วครับ ตามกำหนดต้องถึงเมื่อห้านาทีก่อน
rotfai na cha ma thueng chan chala laeo khrap tam kamnot tong thueng muea ha nathi kon
The train has probably reached the platform; it was scheduled to arrive five minutes ago. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)
The first speaker commits directly. The second presents the arrival as a conclusion supported by the timetable. น่าจะ does not simply mean “70 percent certain”; it foregrounds the proposition as a reasonable assessment.
รถไฟอาจจะเปลี่ยนชานชาลาค่ะ ตอนนี้ยังไม่มีประกาศ
rotfai at cha plian chan chala kha ton ni yang mai mi prakat
The train may change platforms; there has been no announcement yet. (ordinary polite statement of an open possibility, female speaker)
Here อาจจะ keeps an option open without selecting it as the expected outcome. If later evidence appears, the same speaker may move to น่าจะ or ต้อง...แน่. Commitment changes with the information state, not with the verb form.
A practical map of forms and sources
| Frame | Typical commitment and source | Register | Model |
|---|---|---|---|
| อาจ(จะ) + proposition | one live possibility; outcome left open | neutral; bare อาจ common in formal prose | อาจเกิดความล่าช้า |
| เหมือนจะ + predicate / เหมือน + clause | tentative impression from appearance or unfolding signs | ordinary conversation | เหมือนจะมีฝน / เหมือนฝนจะตก |
| คง(จะ) + proposition | expectation from routine, background knowledge, or assumption | neutral; common in conversation | คงจะกลับดึก |
| น่าจะ + proposition | probable conclusion or reasonable estimate | neutral across speech and writing | น่าจะเสร็จทัน |
| ต้อง + proposition + แน่ | strong inference presented as compelled by evidence | ordinary to emphatic | ต้องมีคนย้ายแน่ |
| เป็นไปได้ว่า + clause | explicit possibility framed as a proposition | formal / academic | เป็นไปได้ว่าปัจจัยอื่นมีผล |
| หลักฐานชี้ให้เห็นว่า + clause | claim attributed to stated evidence | formal / academic | ข้อมูลชี้ให้เห็นว่า... |
| ยืนยันว่า / อย่างแน่นอน | high authorial or institutional commitment | neutral-formal, depending on frame | ยืนยันว่าระบบปลอดภัย |
These are not interchangeable decorations. เหมือนจะ identifies an appearance-based impression, while คง commonly draws on what normally happens. ต้อง...แน่ presents the inference as very strong, but still as an inference rather than direct observation.
ไฟในห้องดับหมด แต่ได้ยินเสียงคุยกันอยู่ เหมือนจะยังประชุมไม่เสร็จค่ะ
fai nai hong dap mot tae dai yin siang khui kan yu muean cha yang prachum mai set kha
All the room lights are off, but I can still hear people talking; it seems the meeting is not over yet. (ordinary polite appearance-based assessment, female speaker)
ประตูล็อกจากด้านใน ต้องมีคนอยู่ในห้องแน่ครับ
pratu lok chak dan nai tong mi khon yu nai hong nae khrap
The door is locked from the inside, so someone must be in the room. (ordinary polite strong inference, male speaker)
The same ต้อง can express an externally sourced obligation: พนักงานต้องติดบัตร “employees must wear an ID badge.” That is not a higher point on the certainty scale. The rule is the source of necessity; evidence supports the epistemic inference. Likewise, สามารถ identifies capacity, not probability. See the dedicated modal-order page for combinations of these layers.
Conversation and formal prose make different sources visible
Conversation often lets shared circumstances supply the evidence. A compact คง, น่าจะ, or อาจจะ is natural because both speakers can see the delayed bus, dark clouds, or unanswered phone. Formal prose must let a reader audit the basis of the claim, so a clause such as ผลการวิเคราะห์ชี้ให้เห็นว่า... or มีความเป็นไปได้ว่า... is often more informative than a bare confidence word.
ผลการวิเคราะห์ชี้ให้เห็นว่าอุณหภูมิที่สูงขึ้นมีความสัมพันธ์กับการใช้พลังงานที่เพิ่มขึ้น
phon kan wikhro chi hai hen wa unhaphum thi sung khuen mi khwam samphan kap kan chai phalangngan thi phoem khuen
The analysis indicates that higher temperatures are associated with increased energy use. (academic prose; evidence source made explicit)
จากข้อมูลชุดนี้ อาจกล่าวได้ว่านโยบายใหม่ช่วยลดระยะเวลารอคอย
chak khomun chut ni at klao dai wa nayobai mai chuai lot raya wela ro khoi
From this dataset, it may be said that the new policy helps reduce waiting time. (formal academic calibration; conclusion deliberately bounded by the data)
Formal อาจกล่าวได้ว่า is not a wordier copy of conversational มั้ง. It limits the writer's commitment to a conclusion warranted by the stated analysis. Conversely, ผลการทดลองพิสูจน์ว่า... makes a much stronger claim than ชี้ให้เห็นว่า... and is inappropriate unless the research design genuinely establishes proof.
Position, negation, and scope
Preverbal epistemic markers normally stand outside the proposition they assess: คง [ไม่มา], อาจ [ยังไม่เสร็จ], น่าจะ [ทำได้]. Initial formal frames take a full ว่า clause. Aspect and prospective จะ belong inside the assessed proposition.
| Outer stance | Inner proposition | Combined model | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
fai kotmai at cha kamlang truat sanya yu kha chueng yang top mai dai
The legal team may be reviewing the contract, so they cannot answer yet. (ordinary polite workplace possibility, female speaker)
ทีมงานน่าจะแก้ปัญหาได้แล้วครับ ระบบกลับมาใช้งานได้ตามปกติ
thim ngan na cha kae panha dai laeo khrap rabop klap ma chai ngan dai tam pakati
The team has probably fixed the problem; the system is operating normally again. (ordinary polite evidence-based inference, male speaker)
Do not treat แล้ว as past tense or จะ as automatic future tense. They contribute viewpoint and prospective framing inside the proposition. Thai predicates remain unchanged. Likewise, do not move ไม่ according to English auxiliary order: คงไม่อนุมัติ means “probably will not approve.” Formal ไม่อาจยืนยันได้ means “cannot confirm,” not “may not confirm”; the scope contrast is treated in negative scope.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues are checking whether a shipment will arrive before an event:
บริษัทขนส่งยืนยันเวลาที่ของจะมาถึงหรือยังคะ
borisat khon song yuenyan wela thi khong cha ma thueng rue yang kha
Has the shipping company confirmed when the shipment will arrive? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ยังครับ เขาบอกแค่ว่าอาจจะถึงก่อนเที่ยง
yang khrap khao bok khae wa at cha thueng kon thiang
Not yet. They only said that it might arrive before noon. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้ารถออกจากคลังแล้ว ก็น่าจะมาทันงานนะคะ
tha rot ok chak khlang laeo ko na cha ma than ngan na kha
If the truck has left the warehouse, it will probably arrive in time for the event. (ordinary polite evidence-based estimate, female speaker)
ผมจะขอเลขติดตามครับ จะได้ตรวจข้อมูลก่อนตอบลูกค้า
phom cha kho lek tittam khrap cha dai truat khomun kon top luk kha
I'll ask for the tracking number so we can check the information before answering the customer. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
The exchange moves from unconfirmed possibility to a conditional estimate. Neither speaker needs to repeat the shipment as subject once it is recoverable.
Common Mistakes
1. Treating every choice as a percentage synonym
❌ ยังไม่มีหลักฐาน แต่ผู้จัดการต้องลาออกแน่ค่ะ
Wrong for the intended open possibility—ต้อง...แน่ presents a forceful inference unsupported by the stated context.
✅ ยังไม่มีหลักฐาน แต่ผู้จัดการอาจจะลาออกค่ะ
yang mai mi lakthan tae phuchatkan at cha la ok kha
There is no evidence yet, but the manager may resign. (ordinary polite open possibility, female speaker)
2. Confusing obligation with epistemic inference
❌ ตามระเบียบ พนักงานคงติดบัตรประจำตัวครับ
Wrong for the intended binding rule—คง states an expectation, not the institution's obligation.
✅ ตามระเบียบ พนักงานต้องติดบัตรประจำตัวครับ
tam rabiap phanak ngan tong tit bat pracham tua khrap
Under the regulations, employees must wear an ID badge. (formal rule reported politely by a male speaker)
3. Moving negation before an epistemic marker
❌ เขาไม่คงส่งรายงานวันนี้ค่ะ
Incorrect for ‘he probably will not submit the report’; English auxiliary order does not determine Thai scope.
✅ เขาคงไม่ส่งรายงานวันนี้ค่ะ เพราะข้อมูลยังไม่ครบ
khao khong mai song raingan wan ni kha phro khomun yang mai khrop
He probably will not submit the report today because the information is still incomplete. (ordinary polite expectation, female speaker)
4. Claiming proof when evidence only supports an interpretation
❌ ข้อมูลเบื้องต้นพิสูจน์ว่าวิธีนี้ได้ผลแน่นอน
Overstated in formal prose—preliminary data rarely warrants ‘proves’ plus ‘certainly.’
✅ ข้อมูลเบื้องต้นชี้ให้เห็นว่าวิธีนี้อาจได้ผล
khomun bueang ton chi hai hen wa withi ni at dai phon
The preliminary data indicates that this method may be effective. (formal academic calibration)
5. Inserting an English infinitive marker into a modal chain
❌ ผลลัพธ์น่าจะเพื่อเปลี่ยนแปลงในเดือนหน้า
Incorrect—Thai does not insert เพื่อ as an infinitive marker after น่าจะ.
✅ ผลลัพธ์น่าจะเปลี่ยนแปลงในเดือนหน้าครับ
phonlap na cha plianplaeng nai duean na khrap
The results will probably change next month. (formal-neutral assessment reported politely by a male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Calibrate both commitment and evidence source; there is no universal probability ladder.
- Conversational markers such as อาจจะ, คง, เหมือนจะ, and น่าจะ can be compact because context supplies evidence.
- Formal prose often states the evidential frame explicitly: เป็นไปได้ว่า, อาจกล่าวได้ว่า, or ผลการวิเคราะห์ชี้ให้เห็นว่า.
- Keep stance outside the proposition: modal + negation/aspect/predicate. Thai verbs do not conjugate for certainty or time.
