Thai แสดงว่า + proposition explicitly connects evidence to a conclusion: that shows that, that means that, or conversational so.... The construction tells the listener not merely that the following proposition appears possible, but that it follows from something just observed, stated, or established.
The verb แสดง retains lexical meanings such as “show,” “display,” and “perform.” In แสดงว่า, however, the following ว่า introduces the content of an inference. Thai does not conjugate แสดง to express when the reasoning occurred; time expressions, aspect, and discourse supply that information.
Evidence first, conclusion second
The canonical discourse pattern is evidence; แสดงว่า + conclusion. The evidence may be a whole preceding sentence, so the subject of แสดงว่า is often not spoken.
ร้านปิดไฟแล้ว แสดงว่าวันนี้คงไม่เปิดค่ะ
ran pit fai laeo sadaeng wa wan ni khong mai poet kha
The shop has turned off its lights, so it apparently will not open today. (ordinary polite inference, female speaker)
ชื่อคุณอยู่ในรายชื่อแล้ว แสดงว่าลงทะเบียนสำเร็จครับ
chue khun yu nai raichue laeo sadaeng wa long thabian samret khrap
Your name is on the list, which means the registration succeeded. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)
ยอดขายเพิ่มต่อเนื่องสามเดือน แสดงว่ากลยุทธ์ใหม่น่าจะได้ผลค่ะ
yot khai phoem tonueang sam duean sadaeng wa konlayut mai na cha dai phon kha
Sales have risen for three consecutive months, suggesting that the new strategy is probably working. (careful workplace inference, female speaker)
The final example includes น่าจะ inside the conclusion because the evidence supports a probability rather than a categorical result. แสดงว่า establishes the inferential link; น่าจะ calibrates commitment to the conclusion.
Productive clause frames
| Frame | Productive substitution | Function |
|---|---|---|
| evidence + แสดงว่า + P | ไฟดับ + แสดงว่า + ไม่มีคนอยู่ | draw a conclusion from a fact |
| ถ้า P แสดงว่า Q | ถ้ากดไม่ได้ + แสดงว่า + ระบบล็อก | state a diagnostic inference |
| X แสดงให้เห็นว่า + P | ข้อมูล + แสดงให้เห็นว่า + P | formal “X demonstrates that P” |
| ไม่ได้แสดงว่า + P | เงียบ + ไม่ได้แสดงว่า + เห็นด้วย | deny that evidence entails P |
| แสดงว่า + ไม่ P | แสดงว่า + ไม่ได้ส่ง | infer a negative proposition |
In conversation, clause-initial แสดงว่า... commonly responds to another speaker’s news. In formal analysis, an overt subject such as ผลการศึกษา, ข้อมูล, or หลักฐาน is common, often with the expanded frame แสดงให้เห็นว่า “demonstrates/shows that.”
ผลการตรวจแสดงให้เห็นว่าระบบยังทำงานตามปกติครับ
phon kan truat sadaeng hai hen wa rabop yang tham ngan tam pokkati khrap
The inspection results show that the system is still operating normally. (formal technical report, male voice)
This formal lexical frame names what does the showing. It is related to conversational แสดงว่า but should not be analyzed as a mandatory long form.
More committed than an appearance
Compare ดูเหมือนว่า and แสดงว่า with the same possible conclusion:
ดูเหมือนว่าเขายังไม่อ่านอีเมลค่ะ
du muean wa khao yang mai an imel kha
It appears that he has not read the email yet. (ordinary polite impression, female speaker)
ระบบยังขึ้นว่ายังไม่เปิดอ่าน แสดงว่าเขายังไม่อ่านอีเมลครับ
rabop yang khuen wa yang mai poet an sadaeng wa khao yang mai an imel khrap
The system still says it has not been opened, which shows that he has not read the email yet. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)
The first frames an evaluation. The second supplies a premise and draws an explicit conclusion. Neither construction guarantees that the evidence is infallible; a notification system can be wrong. The difference is the speaker’s argumentative packaging, not objective truth.
For a very strong deduction stated from the conclusion side, Thai can use epistemic ต้อง, as explained on the strong-deduction page.
Negation and inferential scope
Two orders that look similar in English have opposite logical structures.
แสดงว่าไม่ P concludes that a negative proposition holds. ไม่ได้แสดงว่า P says the available fact does not establish P.
ไม่มีชื่อในระบบ แสดงว่ายังไม่ได้สมัครค่ะ
mai mi chue nai rabop sadaeng wa yang mai dai samak kha
There is no name in the system, which means the application has not been made yet. (ordinary polite diagnostic inference, female speaker)
เขาไม่ตอบทันที ไม่ได้แสดงว่าเขาไม่สนใจครับ
khao mai top thanthi mai dai sadaeng wa khao mai sonchai khrap
His not replying immediately does not show that he is uninterested. (careful polite correction of an inference, male speaker)
The second sentence denies the entailment while leaving the embedded proposition open. ไม่แสดงว่า is also possible, especially with an overt subject in formal prose, but conversational ไม่ได้แสดงว่า naturally rejects an inference based on a past or current observation.
Modality, ability, obligation, and aspect inside the conclusion
The proposition after ว่า can contain its own modal and aspect structure. แสดงว่า does not itself express ability or obligation.
ตารางแน่นทุกวัน แสดงว่าเราจะต้องเพิ่มพนักงานอีกคนครับ
tarang naen thuk wan sadaeng wa rao cha tong phoem phanakngan ik khon khrap
The schedule is packed every day, which means we will have to add another employee. (ordinary polite workplace inference, male speaker)
Here จะต้อง presents projected necessity whose source is the packed schedule. Compare ability:
ไฟล์เปิดได้แล้ว แสดงว่าคุณแก้การตั้งค่าสิทธิ์เข้าถึงสำเร็จค่ะ
fai poet dai laeo sadaeng wa khun kae kan tang kha sit khao thueng samret kha
The file can be opened now, which means you successfully fixed the access-permission settings. (ordinary polite technical inference, female speaker)
Postverbal ได้ concerns successful access to the file; แล้ว presents a changed current result. แสดงว่า scopes over the whole conclusion. An ongoing scene is equally possible:
ได้ยินเสียงคุยจากห้องประชุม แสดงว่าพวกเขายังประชุมกันอยู่ครับ
dai yin siang khui chak hong prachum sadaeng wa phuak khao yang prachum kan yu khrap
I can hear voices from the meeting room, which means they are still in a meeting. (ordinary polite inference, male speaker)
Thai places these unchanged markers where their meanings apply. There is no need to turn แสดง into a past or conditional form, and no adjacent verb is automatically an infinitive complement.
Time and register
แสดงว่า is common in informal and neutral conversation, especially as “so that means...”. It is also at home in formal reasoning. The surrounding noun phrase and syntax shift the register:
- แสดงว่า P — neutral conversational inference.
- ผลการทดลองแสดงว่า P — academic/formal, a reported finding.
- ผลการทดลองแสดงให้เห็นว่า P — academic/formal, explicitly “demonstrates that P.”
Past, present, and future conclusions use the same form. เมื่อวานรู้ผลแล้ว แสดงว่า... anchors past reasoning; พรุ่งนี้...จะ... locates a prospective conclusion. The word แสดงว่า does not correspond to one English tense.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
คุณได้รับข้อความยืนยันหรือยังคะ
khun dai rap khokhwam yuenyan rue yang kha
Have you received the confirmation message yet? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ได้รับแล้วครับ มีเลขอ้างอิงอยู่ด้านล่าง
dai rap laeo khrap mi lek ang ing yu dan lang
Yes, I have; there is a reference number at the bottom. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แสดงว่าระบบรับคำขอเรียบร้อยแล้วค่ะ
sadaeng wa rabop rap kham kho riaproi laeo kha
That means the system has received the request successfully. (ordinary polite inference, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ แต่ยังไม่ได้แสดงว่าอนุมัติแล้วนะครับ
chai khrap tae yang mai dai sadaeng wa anumat laeo na khrap
Yes, but it does not yet show that it has been approved. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Using แสดงว่า without recoverable evidence
❌ แสดงว่าเขาจะลาออกค่ะ
Incomplete in an isolated context—the listener has no premise from which this conclusion follows.
✅ เขาเก็บของออกจากโต๊ะหมดแล้ว แสดงว่าเขาน่าจะลาออกค่ะ
khao kep khong ok chak to mot laeo sadaeng wa khao na cha la ok kha
He has cleared everything off his desk, which suggests that he is probably resigning. (ordinary polite inference, female speaker)
2. Confusing a negative conclusion with rejection of an inference
❌ เขาเงียบ แสดงว่าเขาไม่เห็นด้วยครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘his silence does not show that he disagrees’; this wording positively concludes that he disagrees.
✅ เขาเงียบ ไม่ได้แสดงว่าเขาไม่เห็นด้วยครับ
khao ngiap mai dai sadaeng wa khao mai hen duai khrap
His silence does not show that he disagrees. (careful polite rejection of an inference, male speaker)
3. Treating แสดงว่า as a tense marker
❌ พรุ่งนี้ผลจะแสดงว่าแล้วเราผ่านค่ะ
Incorrect—แล้ว cannot conjugate แสดงว่า for a future result.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ผลจะออก แล้วเราจะรู้ว่าผ่านหรือไม่ค่ะ
phrung ni phon cha ok laeo rao cha ru wa phan rue mai kha
The result will come out tomorrow, and then we will know whether we passed. (ordinary polite prospective statement, female speaker)
4. Copying English auxiliary negation
❌ หลักฐานแสดงไม่ว่าเขาอยู่ที่นี่ครับ
Incorrect word order—ไม่ cannot be inserted inside แสดงว่า in imitation of English ‘does not show that.’
✅ หลักฐานไม่ได้แสดงว่าเขาอยู่ที่นี่ครับ
lakthan mai dai sadaeng wa khao yu thi ni khrap
The evidence does not show that he was here. (formal-polite evidential statement, male voice)
Key Takeaways
- แสดงว่า + P explicitly presents P as a conclusion from recoverable evidence.
- แสดงว่าไม่ P infers a negative proposition; ไม่ได้แสดงว่า P denies that the evidence establishes P.
- Modal and aspect markers belong inside the conclusion and retain their own scope.
- The same unchanged construction works in conversation and formal prose; overt evidence phrases make the register and reasoning more explicit.
