When ได้ follows a verb phrase, it can present that event as achievable or successfully attained: เปิดประตูได้ “can/manage to open the door,” จองโต๊ะได้ “can/manage to reserve a table.” A specific obstacle, ในที่สุด “finally,” or แล้ว often favors the successful-result reading. Without that context, the same order may express general ability or permission.
Position is crucial. Postverbal V + ได้ differs from lexical ได้ + noun “get something” and preverbal ได้ + V “get the occasion to V / realize the event.” The form ได้ never conjugates; its constructional position and discourse determine its function.
The event comes before successful ได้
The event being achieved—including its object—precedes ได้:
| Event slot | Postverbal result | Contextual reading |
|---|---|---|
| เปิดตู้เซฟ | ได้ | manage to open the safe |
| หากุญแจสำรอง | ได้ | succeed in finding a spare key |
| จองเที่ยวบินรอบเช้า | ได้ | succeed in booking the morning flight |
| เชื่อมต่อกับระบบ | ได้ | succeed in connecting to the system |
ในที่สุดช่างก็เปิดตู้เซฟได้ครับ
nai thi sut chang ko poet tu sep dai khrap
The technician finally managed to open the safe. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; specific successful attainment)
ฉันหากุญแจสำรองได้แล้วค่ะ
chan ha kunchae samrong dai laeo kha
I've managed to find the spare key now. (ordinary polite update, female speaker; search succeeds)
เมื่อคืนผมจองเที่ยวบินรอบเช้าได้ครับ
muea khuen phom chong thiao bin rop chao dai khrap
Last night I managed to book the morning flight. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; past time from เมื่อคืน)
The safe, key, and flight remain arguments of เปิด, หา, and จอง. ได้ follows the full event phrase rather than separating a transitive predicate from its object.
Success, ability, and permission share the same order
Postverbal ได้ does not encode one fixed English modal. Compare three contexts:
หลังลองหลายครั้ง ผมเชื่อมต่อกับระบบได้แล้วครับ
lang long lai khrang phom chueam to kap rabop dai laeo khrap
After several tries, I've managed to connect to the system. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; attained success)
พนักงานคนนี้เชื่อมต่อกับระบบได้ครับ
phanak ngan khon ni chueam to kap rabop dai khrap
This employee can connect to the system. (ordinary polite assessment, male speaker; general capability)
ลูกค้าเชื่อมต่อกับเครือข่ายนี้ได้ค่ะ
luk kha chueam to kap khruea khai ni dai kha
Customers may connect to this network. (formal-neutral service information, female voice; permission)
The verb order is identical. หลังลองหลายครั้ง and แล้ว favor a particular success; a person-level statement favors capacity; an institutional subject and service context favor permission. English chooses managed to, can, or may, but Thai lets context calibrate the outcome.
The dedicated ability guide compares ได้ with เป็น, สามารถ, and ไหว. This page retains the event-result perspective.
Contrast with lexical and preverbal ได้
Moving ได้ changes what follows it:
เขาได้บัตรคิวแล้วครับ
khao dai bat khio laeo khrap
He has received a queue ticket. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; lexical ได้ takes a noun)
เขาจองคิวได้แล้วครับ
khao chong khio dai laeo khrap
He has managed to reserve a queue slot now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; postverbal success)
เมื่อวานเขาได้คุยกับผู้จัดการค่ะ
muea wan khao dai khui kap phuchatkan kha
Yesterday he got to speak with the manager. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; preverbal attained occasion)
ได้บัตร is acquisition. จองคิวได้ evaluates the reserving event as achievable or attained. ได้คุย presents the occasion of talking as realized. Treating every ได้ as “can” or every preverbal ได้ as past tense erases these contrasts.
Negative scope: ไม่ได้ V versus V ไม่ได้
Negation before ได้ and an event normally denies occurrence. Post-event ไม่ได้ denies ability, permission, or success:
เมื่อวานฉันไม่ได้จองห้องค่ะ เพราะยังไม่รู้วันที่
muea wan chan mai dai chong hong kha phro yang mai ru wan thi
Yesterday I didn't reserve a room because I still didn't know the date. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; nonoccurrence)
เมื่อวานฉันจองห้องไม่ได้ค่ะ เพราะห้องเต็ม
muea wan chan chong hong mai dai kha phro hong tem
Yesterday I couldn't reserve a room because it was full. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; failed attainment)
The second sentence preserves an attempted or relevant booking goal. Thai negative placement expresses this contrast directly; it does not copy English didn't or couldn't order.
Aspect and the boundary of success
Successful attainment is a boundary, not an activity unfolding through time. Therefore กำลัง + event + ได้ is usually a poor way to say “is trying.” Present the ongoing attempt with กำลังพยายาม or กำลังลอง, then use V ได้แล้ว once the obstacle is overcome.
ตอนนี้ช่างกำลังพยายามเปิดประตูอยู่ครับ
ton ni chang kamlang phayayam poet pratu yu khrap
The technician is trying to open the door now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; attempt in progress)
ช่างเปิดประตูได้แล้วค่ะ
chang poet pratu dai laeo kha
The technician has managed to open the door now. (ordinary polite update, female speaker; success boundary attained)
แล้ว highlights the newly available result. It does not turn ได้ into a past-tense ending. A future condition can equally license the same postverbal order: ถ้าเปลี่ยนรหัส พรุ่งนี้น่าจะเข้าได้ “If the code is changed, we should be able to enter tomorrow.”
One result construction, not coordination or a compound
In เปิดประตูได้, ได้ evaluates successful realization of the preceding event and does not introduce a new independent actor. Coordination can add a separate event: ช่างเปิดประตู แล้วลูกค้าก็เดินเข้าไป “The technician opened the door, and then the customer walked in.”
Some fixed expressions must be learned lexically. ใช้ได้ can compositionally mean “can be used,” but it also conventionally evaluates something as “acceptable/not bad.” Context and substitutability matter.
แบบร่างนี้ใช้ได้ครับ แต่ต้องแก้ตัวเลขสองจุด
baep rang ni chai dai khrap tae tong kae tua lek song chut
This draft is acceptable, but two figures need correcting. (ordinary polite workplace assessment, male speaker; conventional evaluative ใช้ได้)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers are trying to reserve a meeting room:
จองห้องใหญ่สำหรับบ่ายนี้ได้ไหมคะ
chong hong yai samrap bai ni dai mai kha
Can we reserve the large room for this afternoon? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
เมื่อกี้จองไม่ได้ครับ ระบบไม่ตอบสนอง
muea ki chong mai dai khrap rabop mai top sanong
I couldn't reserve it just now; the system wasn't responding. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; room omitted recoverably)
ลองใหม่อีกครั้งได้ไหมคะ
long mai ik khrang dai mai kha
Could you try again? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ตอนนี้จองได้แล้ว
dai khrap ton ni chong dai laeo
Certainly. I've managed to reserve it now. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; successful result)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the object after successful ได้
❌ ในที่สุดผมเปิดได้ตู้เซฟครับ
Incorrect—the object completes เปิด before successful-result ได้.
✅ ในที่สุดผมเปิดตู้เซฟได้ครับ
nai thi sut phom poet tu sep dai khrap
I finally managed to open the safe. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
2. Reversing nonoccurrence and failed success
❌ ห้องเต็มครับ ผมไม่ได้จองห้อง
Wrong for the intended ‘I tried but couldn't reserve a room’; this primarily denies occurrence.
✅ ห้องเต็มครับ ผมจองห้องไม่ได้
hong tem khrap phom chong hong mai dai
The rooms were full; I couldn't reserve one. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
3. Treating postverbal ได้ as a past-tense marker
❌ เมื่อคืนฝนตกได้ค่ะ
Incorrect for a plain past weather report; postverbal ได้ contributes possibility or attainment, not past tense.
✅ เมื่อคืนฝนตกหนักค่ะ
muea khuen fon tok nak kha
It rained heavily last night. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
4. Marking an ongoing attempt as attained success
❌ ตอนนี้ผมกำลังเปิดตู้ได้อยู่ครับ
Incorrect for an attempt still in progress; ได้ presents attainability or success rather than the effort itself.
✅ ตอนนี้ผมกำลังพยายามเปิดตู้อยู่ครับ
ton ni phom kamlang phayayam poet tu yu khrap
I'm trying to open the cabinet now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
5. Reading lexical ได้ before a noun as ability
❌ เขาสามารถรางวัลจากมหาวิทยาลัยครับ
Incorrect—สามารถ must precede an event predicate; the intended meaning here is lexical receipt of an award.
✅ เขาได้รับรางวัลจากมหาวิทยาลัยครับ
khao dai rap rangwan chak mahawitthayalai khrap
He received an award from the university. (formal-neutral report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- event + ได้ can present successful attainment, general ability, or permission; context selects the reading.
- An event's object remains before ได้: เปิดตู้เซฟได้.
- Lexical ได้ + noun, preverbal ได้ + event, and postverbal event + ได้ are distinct frames.
- ไม่ได้ V normally denies occurrence, while V ไม่ได้ denies ability, permission, or success.
- Use an attempt predicate for an ongoing process and V ได้แล้ว when success becomes available.
