Verb plus ดู for Trying | Thai Grammar

Thai places ดู after an action to suggest performing it and finding out what happens: กดปุ่มนี้ดู “try pressing this button,” ถามพนักงานดู “try asking an employee.” ลอง often appears before the action, producing the especially clear frame ลอง + action + ดู “try doing it and see.”

This exploratory ดู is related to lexical ดู “look, watch, check”: the subject performs an action and evaluates its outcome. It is not an English infinitive, and it does not promise success. The action may work, fail, taste good, feel uncomfortable, or simply provide new information.

The exploratory frame

The core slots surround a complete action phrase:

The object or complement belongs inside the action before ดู: กดปุ่ม, ชิมน้ำซุป, ถามฝ่ายบัญชี. The same participant normally undertakes the trial and observes or assesses its consequence.

Keep postverbal ดู outside the complete action phrase: ลอง + เปิดไฟล์นี้ + ดู. It scopes over trying that event, rather than taking the event's object itself.

With and without ลอง

Bare action + ดู is common in suggestions and problem-solving. Adding ลอง makes the experimental framing explicit:

เปลี่ยนสายเส้นนี้ดูครับ เผื่อสัญญาณจะดีขึ้น

Neither form is automatically rude. The surrounding particles and relationship determine tone. ดู makes the proposal exploratory; หน่อย, นะ, or a question can soften a request further. สิ can add urging or encouragement and is not a generic politeness marker.

ถ้ายังไม่แน่ใจ ลองใส่รองเท้าคู่นี้เดินดูนะคะ

tha yang mai nae chai long sai rongthao khu ni doen du na kha

If you're still unsure, try putting on this pair of shoes and walking in them. (ordinary polite service suggestion, female speaker)

Here the longer tested activity is ใส่รองเท้าคู่นี้เดิน: put on the shoes and walk. ดู scopes over experiencing the combined trial.

Exploration versus determined effort

English try covers at least two ideas that Thai often separates. ลอง...ดู proposes an experiment whose outcome is unknown. พยายาม + action foregrounds sustained effort toward a goal.

ฉันลองเปิดฝาขวดดูแล้วค่ะ แต่มันแน่นมาก

chan long poet fa khuat du laeo kha tae man naen mak

I tried opening the bottle cap, but it's very tight. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; exploratory attempt)

ฉันพยายามเปิดฝาขวดอยู่ค่ะ แต่ยังเปิดไม่ออก

chan phayayam poet fa khuat yu kha tae yang poet mai ok

I'm trying hard to open the bottle cap, but I still can't get it open. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; sustained effort and failed result)

The two frames can coexist: ลองพยายามทำดู is possible in a specially motivated context, but it is not a default translation of English try. Choose the predicate that matches the intended stance.

Literal looking and the grammaticalized continuum

Some sequences remain close to literal perception:

เขาเปิดกล่องดูว่าของข้างในเสียหายไหมครับ

khao poet klong du wa khong khang nai sia hai mai khrap

He opened the box to check whether the contents were damaged. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; opening followed by literal checking)

คิดดูอีกทีนะคะ ก่อนจะปฏิเสธข้อเสนอ

khit du ik thi na kha kon cha patiset kho sanoe

Think it over once more before rejecting the offer. (ordinary polite advice, female speaker; exploratory evaluation rather than literal looking)

These uses form a continuum. In เปิดกล่องดู, a literal visual check is plausible. In ถามดู or คิดดู, ดู has a more constructional exploratory function. There is no honest single mechanical test that separates every token; semantic compositionality, possible literal perception, and substitutions all matter.

The ดู lexical reference maps viewing, checking, appearance, and established compounds.

Aspect and time

The trial can be underway, planned, or completed without changing either predicate:

ตอนนี้ช่างกำลังลองเปลี่ยนอะไหล่อยู่ครับ

ton ni chang kamlang long plian alai yu khrap

The technician is trying a different spare part now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; trial in progress)

เมื่อเช้าฉันลองใช้วิธีใหม่ดูแล้วค่ะ

muea chao chan long chai withi mai du laeo kha

This morning I tried the new method. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; completed trial)

พรุ่งนี้เราจะลองโทรไปถามดูครับ

phrung ni rao cha long tho pai tham du khrap

Tomorrow we'll try calling to ask. (ordinary polite plan, male speaker; prospective trial)

กำลัง...อยู่ frames an ongoing trial, เมื่อเช้า supplies past time, and จะ presents a plan. ดู is unchanged in every environment. Placing กำลัง inside the tested event can alter scope and is not an English-style progressive conjugation.

Negation, failure, and omission

ไม่ได้ลอง + event + ดู denies that the trial happened. A later negative result says the trial occurred but did not work:

ผมยังไม่ได้ลองเปลี่ยนรหัสดูครับ

I haven't tried changing the code yet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; trial has not occurred)

ผมลองเปลี่ยนรหัสดูแล้ว แต่ยังเข้าไม่ได้ครับ

phom long plian rahat du laeo tae yang khao mai dai khrap

I tried changing the code, but I still can't get in. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; trial occurred, desired result failed)

An object may be omitted after it becomes active: ไฟล์นี้เปิดไม่ได้—ลองเปิดด้วยแอปอื่นดูค่ะ “This file won't open—try opening it with another app.” The file is recoverable from the first clause. Omission without context would leave the tested action underspecified.

Exploratory ดู does not itself mean “succeed.” Pair the trial with an explicit result: ลองแล้ว ใช้ได้ “tried it; it works” versus ลองแล้ว ใช้ไม่ได้ “tried it; it doesn't work.”

One trial clause versus coordination

ลองเปิดไฟล์ดู integrates trial, opening, and evaluation under one subject. Coordination can introduce a new observer or independent event: ผมเปิดไฟล์ แล้วเพื่อนก็ดูหน้าจอ “I opened the file, and then my friend looked at the screen.” The second sentence has different actors and an overt connector, so it is not the same attemptative construction.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

A customer tests a pair of shoes:

รองเท้าคู่นี้คับไปนิดหนึ่งค่ะ

rongthao khu ni khap pai nit nueng kha

This pair of shoes is a little too tight. (ordinary polite statement, female customer)

ลองเดินดูสักครู่ไหมครับ หนังอาจจะนิ่มขึ้น

long doen du sak khru mai khrap nang at cha nim khuen

Would you like to try walking in them for a moment? The leather may soften. (ordinary polite service question, male clerk)

ได้ค่ะ ถ้ายังคับอยู่ขอลองเบอร์ใหญ่กว่านี้นะคะ

dai kha tha yang khap yu kho long boe yai kwa ni na kha

Yes. If they're still tight, I'd like to try a larger size. (ordinary polite reply, female customer)

ได้ครับ เดี๋ยวผมหามาให้ลอง

dai khrap diao phom ha ma hai long

Certainly. I'll find one and bring it for you to try. (ordinary polite reply, male clerk)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting exploratory ดู before the tested action

❌ ลองดูเปลี่ยนรหัสครับ

Incorrect for ‘try changing the code’; exploratory ดู follows the action tested.

✅ ลองเปลี่ยนรหัสดูครับ

2. Leaving the action's object after ดู

❌ ลองชิมดูแกงถ้วยนี้ค่ะ

Incorrect neutral attemptative order—the food being tasted belongs with ชิม before ดู.

✅ ลองชิมแกงถ้วยนี้ดูค่ะ

Try tasting this bowl of curry. (ordinary polite suggestion, female speaker)

3. Using exploratory ลอง for determined sustained effort

❌ นักกู้ภัยลองยกเสาคอนกรีตอยู่ครับ

Wrong for the intended emphasis on sustained rescue effort; ลอง frames an experiment rather than persistence.

✅ นักกู้ภัยกำลังพยายามยกเสาคอนกรีตอยู่ครับ

nak ku phai kamlang phayayam yok sao khon krit yu khrap

The rescuers are trying hard to lift the concrete post. (formal-neutral report, male speaker)

4. Putting กำลัง inside the trial frame

❌ ช่างลองกำลังเปลี่ยนอะไหล่ดูครับ

Incorrect progressive placement; กำลัง frames the trial before ลอง.

✅ ช่างกำลังลองเปลี่ยนอะไหล่อยู่ครับ

The technician is trying a different spare part. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

5. Using nonoccurrence when the trial happened but failed

❌ ผมไม่ได้ลองเปิดไฟล์ครับ แต่เปิดแล้วไม่สำเร็จ

Contradictory for the intended report: the first clause denies trying, while the second says the attempt occurred.

✅ ผมลองเปิดไฟล์ดูแล้วครับ แต่ยังเปิดไม่ได้
