ได้: get; can; succeed; past-like marker

Thai ได้ keeps one written and spoken form, but its position creates several related interpretations. Before a noun, it can mean “get, obtain, receive.” Before another event predicate, it presents that event as realized or available on a particular occasion and can look “past-like” in English translation. After a predicate, it commonly marks ability, permission, possibility, or successful attainment. Calling all of these “can” or “past tense” loses the structure learners need.

เช้านี้ผมได้ข่าวจากทางโรงเรียนครับ

chao ni phom dai khao chak thang rongrian khrap

This morning I got news from the school. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; lexical acquisition)

วันหยุดเราได้ลองร้านอาหารเปิดใหม่ค่ะ

wan yut rao dai long ran ahan poet mai kha

On our day off, we got to try the newly opened restaurant. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; realized opportunity)

บัตรใบนี้ใช้ขึ้นรถไฟฟ้าได้ครับ

bat bai ni chai khuen rotfaifa dai khrap

This card can be used to board the electric train. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; possibility)

English get to, managed to, can, and may divide meanings that Thai organizes largely through the position of ได้ plus context. The synthesis page on ได้ gives wider contrasts; this page keeps the headword and its lexical frames in view.

💡
Locate ได้ before translating it. ได้ + noun acquires a thing, ได้ + event presents a realized occasion, and event + ได้ presents ability, permission, possibility, or success.

An invariant-form matrix

ได้ does not conjugate or agree with a subject. The surrounding construction supplies person, time, aspect, and polarity.

past contextเมื่อวานผมได้จดหมายจากธนาคารเมื่อวาน locates lexical “receive”
developing receiptฉันกำลังได้รับข้อมูลเพิ่มกำลัง presents receipt as unfolding; ได้ is in the established compound ได้รับ
new completed stateเขาได้คำตอบแล้วแล้ว presents possession of the answer as achieved
future benefitพวกเราจะได้หยุดอีกหนึ่งวันจะ + ได้ presents an expected opportunity
event deniedเขาไม่ได้มาประชุมไม่ได้ before the event denies its occurrence

เมื่อวานผมได้จดหมายตอบรับจากมหาวิทยาลัยครับ

muea wan phom dai chotmai top rap chak mahawitthayalai khrap

Yesterday I received an acceptance letter from the university. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from เมื่อวาน)

ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังได้รับข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมจากฝ่ายบัญชีค่ะ

ton ni chan kamlang dai rap khomun phoemtoem chak fai banchi kha

I'm currently receiving additional information from Accounting. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; ได้ within established ได้รับ)

เขาได้คำตอบที่ต้องการแล้วครับ

khao dai kham top thi tongkan laeo khrap

He has now got the answer he wanted. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; achieved possession)

เดือนหน้าพวกเราจะได้หยุดเพิ่มอีกหนึ่งวันค่ะ

duean na phuak rao cha dai yut phoem ik nueng wan kha

Next month we'll get one additional day off. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; expected opportunity)

The กำลัง row uses the established compound ได้รับ “receive” because the receipt of information can unfold over an interval; it is not a generic rule that กำลัง may precede every ได้ construction. กำลังได้คำตอบทันที would be semantically awkward because “immediately getting an answer” offers no natural extended phase.

Lexical receipt and established combinations

As a lexical verb, ได้ selects the acquired item directly. The item may be concrete, informational, institutional, or abstract.

CollocationNatural meaningRegister
ได้งานget a jobneutral
ได้ข่าวreceive/hear newsneutral
ได้คำตอบget an answerneutral
ได้รับreceiveneutral-formal; frequent in institutional contexts
ได้โอกาสget an opportunityneutral
ได้เวลาit is timeneutral, established expression

น้องสาวผมได้งานใกล้สถานีรถไฟครับ

nong sao phom dai ngan klai sathani rotfai khrap

My younger sister got a job near the railway station. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

ลูกค้าได้รับข้อความยืนยันแล้วค่ะ

luk kha dai rap khokhwam yuenyan laeo kha

The customer has received the confirmation message. (professional-polite speech, female speaker; institutional collocation ได้รับ)

When the object is active, it can disappear: after ได้ผลตรวจหรือยังคะ “Have you received the test result yet?”, ได้แล้วครับ means “Yes, I have.” This is recoverable object omission, not a special intransitive conjugation.

Preverbal ได้: realized occasion, not simple past tense

Before an event, ได้ says that participation or realization occurred or became available. A past context often makes English use a past verb, but ได้ does not itself locate every event in the past.

ตอนฝึกงานฉันได้เรียนรู้จากทีมช่างมากค่ะ

ton fuek ngan chan dai rianru chak thim chang mak kha

During my internship, I learned a lot from the technical team. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; realized experience)

ถ้าไปถึงเร็ว เราจะได้เลือกที่นั่งก่อนครับ

tha pai thueng reo rao cha dai lueak thi nang kon khrap

If we arrive early, we'll get to choose seats first. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; future opportunity)

The second example proves that preverbal ได้ is not inherently past: จะได้เลือก is prospective. Time comes from ถ้า, จะ, adverbs, and discourse. Thai verbs remain invariant.

Formal written reports also use preverbal ได้ to present a completed event, sometimes with little sense of personal opportunity. Even there, it is a discourse and viewpoint choice rather than an obligatory past-tense ending: a past-time expression can locate an unmarked verb without ได้.

Postverbal ได้: ability, permission, possibility, or success

After the event predicate, ได้ evaluates whether the event is possible or attainable. Human capacity, rules, physical circumstances, and successful results all support different English translations.

ห้องประชุมนี้นั่งได้สิบสองคนค่ะ

hong prachum ni nang dai sip song khon kha

This meeting room can seat twelve people. (ordinary polite workplace explanation, female speaker; capacity)

ส่งแบบฟอร์มทางอีเมลได้ครับ

song baep fom thang imen dai khrap

You may send the form by email. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; permission)

ในที่สุดช่างก็ซ่อมเครื่องได้ค่ะ

nai thi sut chang ko som khrueang dai kha

In the end, the technician managed to repair the machine. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; successful attainment)

Context decides among can, may, and managed to. For learned skill เป็น and situational capacity ไหว, see ได้, เป็น, and ไหว.

ไม่ได้ and ...ไม่ได้: scope before and after the event

ไม่ได้ + event denies realization: the event did not occur or the subject did not get to do it. event + ไม่ได้ presents inability, prohibition, or impossibility. English couldn't can translate either, so Thai word order matters.

เมื่อคืนผมไม่ได้ตอบข้อความครับ

muea khuen phom mai dai top khokhwam khrap

I didn't reply to the message last night. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; event denied)

ตอนนี้ผมตอบข้อความไม่ได้ครับ

ton ni phom top khokhwam mai dai khrap

I can't reply to messages right now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; situational inability)

💡
Do not translate ไม่ได้ V and V ไม่ได้ as one interchangeable “couldn't V.” The first denies realization; the second places impossibility or inability after the event predicate.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

พรุ่งนี้เข้าห้องประชุมทางประตูด้านข้างได้ไหมคะ

phrung ni khao hong prachum thang pratu dan khang dai mai kha

Can we enter the meeting room through the side door tomorrow? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ได้ครับ แต่ต้องใช้บัตรพนักงาน

dai khrap tae tong chai bat phanak ngan

Yes, but you need to use an employee card. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; predicate omitted recoverably)

ฉันยังไม่ได้บัตรใหม่เลยค่ะ

chan yang mai dai bat mai loei kha

I still haven't received my new card. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; lexical ได้ under negation)

งั้นผมขอบัตรชั่วคราวให้ครับ

ngan phom kho bat chua khrao hai khrap

Then I'll request a temporary card for you. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Treating ได้ as a mandatory past marker

❌ เมื่อก่อนผมได้ไปตลาดทุกเช้าวันเสาร์ครับ

Misleading for the intended neutral past habit—preverbal ได้ adds a realized-event or opportunity reading; it is not a habitual-past marker.

✅ เมื่อก่อนผมไปตลาดทุกเช้าวันเสาร์ครับ

muea kon phom pai talat thuk chao wan sao khrap

I used to go to the market every Saturday morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; habitual time comes from context)

2. Reversing event denial and inability

❌ เมื่อวานฉันโทรหาเขาไม่ได้ค่ะ

Wrong for an unqualified intended ‘I did not call him’; this normally says circumstances prevented the call.

✅ เมื่อวานฉันไม่ได้โทรหาเขาค่ะ

muea wan chan mai dai tho ha khao kha

I didn't call him yesterday. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; occurrence denied)

3. Moving permission ได้ before the event

❌ ลูกค้าได้จอดรถตรงนี้ค่ะ

Wrong for the intended general permission; preverbal ได้ instead favors a realized-event reading.

✅ ลูกค้าจอดรถตรงนี้ได้ค่ะ

luk kha chot rot trong ni dai kha

Customers may park here. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker; permission after the event)

4. Adding an English infinitive marker

❌ พรุ่งนี้เราจะได้ไปที่จะพบหมอครับ

Incorrect—Thai does not insert an equivalent of English ‘to’ before the adjacent event predicate.

✅ พรุ่งนี้เราจะได้ไปพบหมอครับ

phrung ni rao cha dai pai phop mo khrap

Tomorrow we'll get to go see the doctor. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

5. Putting lexical ได้ after the acquired noun

❌ เขาส่วนลดได้เพราะเป็นสมาชิกค่ะ

Incorrect for lexical ‘get a discount’—the acquired noun follows ได้; postverbal ได้ belongs to a different frame.

✅ เขาได้ส่วนลดพิเศษเพราะเป็นสมาชิกค่ะ

khao dai suan lot phiset phro pen samachik kha

She gets a special discount because she is a member. (ordinary polite service explanation, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ได้ + noun is lexical acquisition; an understood item can be omitted in context.
  • ได้ + event presents a realized experience or opportunity and is not a simple past tense.
  • event + ได้ presents ability, permission, possibility, or successful attainment.
  • ไม่ได้ V and V ไม่ได้ differ in scope.
  • ได้ remains invariant with every subject; Thai grammar is expressed around it.
