Thai เอา is an invariant verb for taking or selecting something, and it is the ordinary conversational choice in orders such as “I'll have this one.” It also introduces an object that later predicates move, place, keep, or otherwise dispose of: เอา + object + ไป/มา/ไว้.... English distributes these uses across take, have, want, bring, and put, but Thai organizes them through one headword plus its frame.
Taking, choosing, and ordering
The basic frame is chooser + เอา + selected thing. The subject is often omitted in a service encounter because the speaker is obvious. เอา can sound direct by itself, but a natural noun phrase and ครับ/ค่ะ make it an ordinary order, not an inherently rude command.
| Use | Frame | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| take/select | person + เอา + object | เอาเล่มนี้ |
| order | (speaker) + เอา + menu item + amount | เอาชาร้อนหนึ่งกา |
| reject selection | ไม่เอา + object | ไม่เอาถุง |
| ask about choice | เอา + object + ไหม | เอาน้ำแข็งไหม |
| dispose of shared object | เอา + object + ไป/มา/ไว้ + continuation | เอากล่องไปเก็บ |
ผมเอารองเท้าคู่สีน้ำตาลครับ
phom ao rong thao khu si namtan khrap
I'll take the brown pair of shoes. (ordinary polite service speech, male speaker; selection)
เอาชามะนาวไม่หวานสองแก้วค่ะ
ao cha manao mai wan song kaeo kha
I'll have two unsweetened lime teas. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker; subject omitted)
ไม่เอาช้อนพลาสติกครับ ที่บ้านมีแล้ว
mai ao chon phlatsatik khrap thi ban mi laeo
I don't need a plastic spoon; I already have one at home. (ordinary polite service speech, male speaker)
The exact English translation depends on the scene. At a shop เอาเล่มนี้ is “I'll take this one”; at home the same frame can literally mean “take this volume.” The Thai argument structure has not changed.
An invariant-form matrix
เอา does not agree with a subject and has no past or future form. Time expressions and particles surround the unchanged headword.
| Environment | Thai pattern | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อวานผมเอารถไปซ่อม | เมื่อวาน locates the event |
| ongoing handling | ฉันกำลังเอาหนังสือใส่กล่อง | กำลัง presents an ongoing action |
| completed removal | เขาเอาของไปแล้ว | ไป and แล้ว present departure and completion |
| prospective placement | พวกเราจะเอาโต๊ะไว้ข้างนอก | จะ presents an intended action |
| negative selection | เขาไม่เอาถุง | ไม่ before เอา rejects the object |
เมื่อวานผมเอารถไปตรวจที่ศูนย์บริการครับ
muea wan phom ao rot pai truat thi sun borikan khrap
Yesterday I took the car to be checked at the service center. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past from context)
ฉันกำลังเอาหนังสือเก่าใส่กล่องค่ะ
chan kamlang ao nangsue kao sai klong kha
I'm putting the old books into a box. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; ongoing handling)
เขาเอาอุปกรณ์ที่เสียออกไปแล้วครับ
khao ao upakon thi sia ok pai laeo khrap
He has taken the broken equipment out. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; completed removal)
พวกเราจะเอาโต๊ะพับไว้ข้างนอกค่ะ
phuak rao cha ao to phap wai khang nok kha
We'll keep the folding tables outside. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; prospective placement)
Neither แล้ว nor จะ is attached to เอา as tense morphology. The verb remains unchanged. The broader เอา synthesis page compares these frames with commands and service language.
Shared-object disposal chains
In เอา + object + predicate, the object introduced after เอา is also understood as the participant affected by what follows. ไป, มา, ไว้, ใส่, ออก, and a later action describe its path, placement, or disposition.
| Chain | Viewpoint/result | Typical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| เอา + object + ไป... | away from the current viewpoint | take it away/to do something |
| เอา + object + มา... | toward the current viewpoint | bring it here/to do something |
| เอา + object + ไว้... | retain or place for a later state | keep/leave it |
| เอา + object + ใส่... | place into a container/location | put it in |
| เอา + object + ออก | remove outward | take it out/remove it |
ช่วยเอาจานที่ล้างแล้วไปวางบนโต๊ะหน่อยค่ะ
chuai ao chan thi lang laeo pai wang bon to noi kha
Please take the washed plates and put them on the table. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; shared object across ไป and วาง)
ตอนกลับเอาเอกสารต้นฉบับมาด้วยนะครับ
ton klap ao ekkasan ton chabap ma duai na khrap
When you come back, bring the original document with you. (ordinary polite reminder, male speaker; motion toward the speaker's viewpoint)
ฉันเอาผักที่เหลือไว้ทำแกงพรุ่งนี้ค่ะ
chan ao phak thi luea wai tham kaeng phrung ni kha
I'm keeping the leftover vegetables to make curry tomorrow. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; retained for later use)
This is not เอา followed by an English infinitive. The predicates form a Thai multi-predicate construction and share the object. With ไป/มา, deictic viewpoint matters; the motion-verb page treats that contrast directly.
Negation, aspect, and omission
ไม่เอา + object rejects or declines a selection. ไม่ได้เอา + object + มา/ไป denies that the taking event occurred. เอา + object + มาไม่ได้ says bringing it is impossible. These orders are not interchangeable.
วันนี้ฉันไม่เอากาแฟค่ะ ขอชาแทน
wan ni chan mai ao kafae kha kho cha thaen
I don't want coffee today; tea instead, please. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)
ผมไม่ได้เอาใบรับรองมาครับ
phom mai dai ao bai raprong ma khrap
I didn't bring the certificate. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; event denied)
An understood object may be omitted in a choice question and answer: เอาไหมคะ — ไม่เอาครับ “Would you like it? — No, thank you.” Omission works because the offered item is visible or already mentioned.

Common Mistakes
1. Reversing noun and classifier in an order
❌ ฉันเอาสองแก้วชานมค่ะ
Incorrect—an ordinary counted drink uses noun + number + classifier.
✅ ฉันเอาชานมสองแก้วค่ะ
chan ao cha nom song kaeo kha
I'll have two milk teas. (ordinary polite service speech, female speaker)
2. Treating ไป and มา as free synonyms
❌ ตอนนี้ฉันอยู่บ้าน ช่วยเอาพัสดุไปให้ฉันหน่อยค่ะ
Incorrect for bringing the parcel from elsewhere toward the speaker at home; ไป points away from the current viewpoint.
✅ ตอนนี้ฉันอยู่บ้าน ช่วยเอาพัสดุมาให้ฉันหน่อยค่ะ
ton ni chan yu ban chuai ao phatsadu ma hai chan noi kha
I'm at home now; please bring the parcel to me. (ordinary polite request, female speaker; มา points toward the speaker)
3. Negating after เอา for a rejected choice
❌ ผมเอาไม่ถุงครับ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes เอา when the speaker declines the item.
✅ ผมไม่เอาถุงครับ ถือเองได้
phom mai ao thung khrap thue eng dai
I don't need a bag; I can carry it myself. (ordinary polite service speech, male speaker)
4. Inserting an English-style infinitive marker
❌ ช่วยเอากล่องไปที่จะเก็บหลังร้านค่ะ
Incorrect—ไป and เก็บ form a Thai predicate chain without an infinitive marker.
✅ ช่วยเอากล่องไปเก็บหลังร้านค่ะ
chuai ao klong pai kep lang ran kha
Please take the box and store it behind the shop. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
5. Confusing event denial with simple rejection
❌ เมื่อเช้าผมไม่เอาโทรศัพท์มาครับ
Wrong for a neutral intended ‘I didn't bring my phone’; ไม่เอา presents a rejected choice or intention.
✅ เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้เอาโทรศัพท์มาครับ
muea chao phom mai dai ao thorasap ma khrap
I didn't bring my phone this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past event denied)
