เอาไปให้ and Three-Verb Transfer Chains

Thai often expresses “take this to someone” as a compact event chain: เอา + thing + ไป + ให้ + recipient. In เอาเอกสารไปให้ผู้จัดการ, เอา introduces control of the documents, ไป sends them away or onward from the adopted viewpoint, and ให้ introduces the delivery to the manager. English can hide the three predicates inside take or deliver; Thai lets each stage remain visible.

This is a productive serial construction, not a single conjugated verb and not three independent commands. Its order tracks the event: obtain/control the theme, move it onward, then transfer it.

The core frame

SlotFunctionPossible contents
เอาtake, get, or handleเอา
themethe thing carriedเอกสาร, ยา, กุญแจ, กาแฟ
ไปmotion away or onwardไป
ให้transfer to a recipientให้
recipientthe person who receives itผู้จัดการ, คุณแม่, ลูกค้า

ช่วยเอาเอกสารชุดนี้ไปให้ผู้จัดการหน่อยค่ะ

chuai ao ekkasan chut ni pai hai phuchatkan noi kha

Please take this set of documents to the manager. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

The documents follow เอา because they are its theme. The recipient follows ให้. No word equivalent to English to belongs between ไป and ให้.

ผมจะเอากุญแจไปให้คุณนิดตอนพักเที่ยงครับ

phom cha ao kunchae pai hai khun nit ton phak thiang khrap

I'll take the key to Khun Nit at lunchtime. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

พี่เอายาไปให้คุณยายแล้วค่ะ

phi ao ya pai hai khun yai laeo kha

Phi has taken the medicine to Grandmother already. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The verbs do not change for future or completed reference. จะ frames the prospective chain; final แล้ว presents its relevant endpoint as attained.

💡
Keep the participant map in view: one agent controls and carries the theme, while the noun after ให้ receives it. The theme is not repeated because it remains understood throughout the chain.

Why this is one complex event

In a normal เอา…ไปให้ chain, the same agent is understood with all three predicates, and the theme introduced after เอา is what travels and is transferred. There is no overt coordinator, no new subject, and normally no intonational break.

เจ้าหน้าที่เอาบัตรผู้มาติดต่อไปให้ฝ่ายรักษาความปลอดภัยครับ

chaonathi ao bat phu ma titto pai hai fai raksa khwam plotphai khrap

The officer took the visitor's card to security. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Compare a coordinated sequence with a new subject:

ผมเอาเอกสารไปที่ห้องประชุม แล้วเลขาก็ให้เอกสารกับผู้จัดการครับ

phom ao ekkasan pai thi hong prachum laeo lekha ko hai ekkasan kap phuchatkan khrap

I took the documents to the meeting room, and then the secretary gave them to the manager. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; two clauses and two agents)

The second sentence reports separate events. แล้ว, the overt new subject เลขา, and the repeated theme make the clause boundary clear. The serial version packages carrying and delivery as one practical task.

The chain also remains productive: replace the theme or recipient without changing its argument pattern.

Productive frameExampleNatural use
เอา + food/drink + ไปให้ + personเอากาแฟไปให้ลูกค้าtake coffee to a customer
เอา + document + ไปให้ + officeเอาแบบฟอร์มไปให้ฝ่ายบุคคลtake a form to HR
เอา + personal item + ไปให้ + ownerเอากระเป๋าไปให้พี่take a bag to Phi
เอา + item + ไปส่งให้ + recipientเอาพัสดุไปส่งให้ลูกค้าtake a parcel for delivery

เดี๋ยวฉันเอากาแฟไปให้ลูกค้าที่โต๊ะริมหน้าต่างค่ะ

diao chan ao kafae pai hai luk kha thi to rim natang kha

I'll take the coffee over to the customer at the table by the window. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker)

ไป contrasts with มา

ไป construes the path as away from or onward beyond the adopted center. If the delivery comes toward that center, use มา instead.

ช่วยเอาใบเสร็จไปให้ฝ่ายบัญชีหน่อยครับ

chuai ao bai set pai hai fai banchi noi khrap

Please take the receipt over to accounting. (ordinary polite request, male speaker; destination is away/onward)

ฉันอยู่หน้าเคาน์เตอร์แล้ว เอาใบเสร็จมาให้ฉันได้เลยค่ะ

chan yu na khaotoe laeo ao bai set ma hai chan dai loei kha

I'm at the counter now; you can bring the receipt to me. (ordinary polite statement, female speaker; delivery is toward the speaker)

The physical route may be the same, but viewpoint changes the directional. This is the same deictic logic developed on the ไป and มา page.

💡
English take and bring are useful clues, not automatic translations. Choose ไป or มา from the center adopted in the Thai conversation.

Longer chains preserve iconic order

Another verb may specify how the theme is delivered or what happens before transfer. เอาพัสดุไปส่งให้ลูกค้า adds ส่ง “send/deliver” before the beneficiary-like transfer relation. หยิบเอกสารมาเอาไปให้ would usually be needlessly repetitive; a natural chain selects predicates that contribute distinct stages.

คนขับรถเอาอาหารไปส่งให้ลูกค้าที่คอนโดครับ

khon khap rot ao ahan pai song hai luk kha thi khondo khrap

The driver took the food to deliver to the customer at the condominium. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

ก่อนออกไป ช่วยเอากล่องนี้ไปฝากให้คุณอาด้วยนะคะ

kon ok pai chuai ao klong ni pai fak hai khun a duai na kha

Before you go out, please take this box and leave it with Auntie too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

The semantic order is handling → outward path → delivery or placement with the final person. Reversing ให้ and ไป does not preserve this event: ให้…ไป can instead mean “give something away” or, with a person plus predicate, “let someone go.” Order assigns participant roles.

Aspect and negation scope

A pre-predicate marker can frame the whole chain:

วันนี้ผมไม่ได้เอาสัญญาไปให้ลูกค้าครับ เพราะยังเซ็นไม่ครบ

wan ni phom mai dai ao sanya pai hai luk kha khrap phro yang sen mai khrop

I didn't take the contract to the customer today because it still lacks all the signatures. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; broad negation denies the transfer trip)

By contrast, an explicit break can preserve the journey while denying transfer:

เขาเอาของไปถึงสำนักงานแล้ว แต่ยังไม่ได้ให้เจ้าหน้าที่ค่ะ

khao ao khong pai thueng samnakngan laeo tae yang mai dai hai chaonathi kha

She has taken the item to the office, but she hasn't given it to the officer yet. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; two contrasted assertions)

The second example is coordination, not a simple serial chain with internal English-style not. To make that scope clear, Thai uses แต่ and a second aspectual-negative phrase.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two coworkers are distributing materials before a meeting:

เอกสารสำหรับคุณสมชายอยู่ไหนคะ

ekkasan samrap khun somchai yu nai kha

Where are the documents for Khun Somchai? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

อยู่บนโต๊ะผมครับ เดี๋ยวผมเอาไปให้เขาเอง

yu bon to phom khrap diao phom ao pai hai khao eng

They're on my desk. I'll take them to him myself. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; theme is recoverable and omitted)

ช่วยเอาป้ายชื่อไปให้เขาด้วยนะคะ

chuai ao pai chue pai hai khao duai na kha

Please take his name badge to him too. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ได้ครับ ผมจะเอาทั้งสองอย่างไปให้พร้อมกัน

dai khrap phom cha ao thang song yang pai hai phrom kan

Certainly. I'll take both things to him together. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the theme after ไป

❌ ช่วยเอาไปเอกสารให้ผู้จัดการค่ะ

Incorrect—the theme of เอา belongs before directional ไป.

✅ ช่วยเอาเอกสารไปให้ผู้จัดการค่ะ

chuai ao ekkasan pai hai phuchatkan kha

Please take the documents to the manager. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

2. Putting the recipient before the theme

❌ ผมเอาคุณนิดไปให้กุญแจครับ

Wrong for the intended transfer; this makes คุณนิด look like the participant being taken.

✅ ผมเอากุญแจไปให้คุณนิดครับ

phom ao kunchae pai hai khun nit khrap

I'll take the key to Khun Nit. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

3. Choosing ไป for an explicitly speaker-directed delivery

❌ ฉันรออยู่ตรงนี้ เอากาแฟไปให้ฉันนะคะ

Wrong for the intended ‘bring it here’; ไป conflicts with the speaker-centered direction.

✅ ฉันรออยู่ตรงนี้ เอากาแฟมาให้ฉันนะคะ

chan ro yu trong ni ao kafae ma hai chan na kha

I'm waiting right here; bring the coffee to me, please. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

4. Repeating prospective จะ before every predicate

❌ ผมจะเอาเอกสารจะไปจะให้ลูกค้าครับ

Incorrect—one จะ frames the integrated prospective chain.

✅ ผมจะเอาเอกสารไปให้ลูกค้าครับ

phom cha ao ekkasan pai hai luk kha khrap

I'll take the documents to the customer. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Use เอา + theme + ไป + ให้ + recipient for an onward carrying-and-delivery event.
  • The theme is shared across handling, motion, and transfer; it need not be repeated.
  • ไป encodes deictic path, so a delivery toward the adopted center uses มา.
  • Put aspect or broad negation before the chain, or use an explicit second clause when only a later stage is denied.
